This bench in Hurdle Way has been refurbished, by his family, in remembrance of a Twyford man who loved walking here but sadly suffered a fatal fall earlier this year.

The Sarcophagus was commissioned from Nicola Pisano, in 1264, and it is believed that he himself carved some of this panel, though it was mostly executed by his assistants Lapo di Ricevuto and Arnolfo di Cambio. It shows scenes from the saint's life:

On th eleft hand side St. Dominic resurrects the young Napoleone Orsini, after a fatal fall from his horse. The carving of Saint Dominic, leaning in, is attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio.

On the right is a scene from Dominic’s preaching against the Albigensians. The heretics threw a book, given to them by Dominic to correct their "errors", into a fire, but the flames rejected the book without injury.

On the right corner, partially obscured by a candle is St. Dominic with the Book and the Scourge. St Paul stands on the left corner, again partially obscured, while in the middle is the crowned virgin holding Jesus.

Above, but scalped in my picture(!) stand four of the great patron saints of Bologna, carved two centuries later. From the left: Saint Francis of Assisi, San Petronio, Saint Dominic and Saint Florian. San Petronio, holding his basilica was completed by Michaelangelo.

A FATAL FALL.

RAILWAY BRIDGE ACCIDENT

A shocking discovery was made early this morning at Parnell by a railway surfaceman, who, whilst crossing the railway bridge, found the dead body of an elderly woman lying on the ground below, close to one of the pillars of the viaduct.

The man, whose name is Charles Edward Green was crossing the bridge on his way to work about 7 a.m., when he observed an umbrella lying on the bridge between the Parnell end and the Strand. Pausing for a moment, he stooped to pick it up, when his gaze fell on the body the below. Hastily clambering, down, he was horrified to find that the woman was quite dead, having sustained a terrible gash in the head, which had evidently been split open as the result of a fall from the bridge itself. Green at once informed the police, and Constable Donovan superintended the removal of the body to the morgue.

The body has since been identified as that of Mrs. Mary Hobbins, a widow, aged about 60 years, who had previously resided with her married daughter, Mrs. A. W. Simpson, of Railway-street, Parnell. The deceased had spent the past two months in the Salvation Army Rescue Home, having left that institution last evening about 7 o'clock. She had been admitted to the home on her own application, but had occasionally been away in domestic service. When leaving last night she appeared to be much as usual.

From the injuries made, and the position of the body, it would appear that the deceased was trying to cross the bridge on foot, and slipped between the sleepers, which at this point are some distance apart. On this portion of the bridge there is no handrail of any description. It is evident that in the fall of between 20 or 30 feet she struck the ground head first. It is possible that in the darkness, she was startled by the approach of a train, and in her haste to escape, slipped and fell.

An inquest will be held.

The jury at the inquest on Mrs Mary Hobbins yesterday deuded to draw the attention of the City Council to what was termed the disgraceful state of the approach to the Morgue. The jurymen yesterday had to throw bricks on the submerged path to attain the Morgue and leave it somewhere near dryshod. The floor of the building, too, was under water.

An inquest was held at the Swan Hotel, Parnell, yesterday, before Mr. Gresham, Coroner, on the body of Mrs. Mary Hobbins, aged 60, which was found beneath the Parnell railway bridge on Wednesday morning. The evidence bore out the facts already published in the Herald. Annie M. Tillett, matron of the Parnell Rescue Home, where deceased had been staying, stated that though deceased was not addicted to drink she returned from town on Tuesday afternoon, and admitted having had three glasses of beer. Constable E. Owen deposed to finding a broken flask in the woman's skirt pocket. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.

This picture captures the near-fatal fall to death of our bus. During the 11 hour bus ride across southern Uganda, our bus nearly fell off the side of the road as it had lost momentum going up an inclined narrow road as another vehicle was coming down the road. Our bus had to slow down so it could squeeze by. After the vehicle had passed, our bus tried to resume acceleration up the pass, but in vain started spinning its wheels as we drifted off the side of the road. The bus was being supported by a single tree trunk. One man yelled that we were going to fall off the cliff, so everyone immediately evacuated the bus to avoid death and lighten the load of the bus. Then the men went to the back of the bus to help push it from behind. After much black smoke and shredding of bus tires, the bus manage to escape...the perfect introduction into Africa.

The ambulance was immediately summoned, and the injured man taken to the Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries within twenty minutes of his admittance.

The deceased, a married man, was a returned soldier, having returned to New Zealand about twelve months ago. after two years' service. He had re-enlisted, and was to have entered camp next week.

An inquest is being held this afternoon.

CARTER'S FATAL FALL.

EVIDENCE AT THE INQUEST.

An inquest into the death of Norman Keith Honeycombe, who died at the hospital on Friday afternoon, as the result of injuries received at the King's Wharf earlier in the day, was held by Mr. P. V. Frazer, S.M., on Saturday afternoon. Evidence was given by members of the wharf guard to the effect that deceased, who was driving a float carrying casks of corned beef, was sitting on the side of the vehicle and appeared to overbalance, falling face downwards. One of the wheels passed over his back, causing severe injuries. The evidence of Dr. Maguire, superintendent at the hospital, was that deceased when admitted was in a profound collapse. A number of ribs were broken, the liver had been ruptured, and there were severe internal injuries. In his opinion death was due to shock caused by the injuries mentioned. A verdict to this effect was returned.

The blocky and jointed geology is Marumba beds, a metamorphic rock that formed as clay sediments in a submarine graben, and eventually uplifted during a mountain building phase. The clay has derived from volcanic rocks (probably andesitic rocks). Because it was once clay there is no grit in the rocks, so when wet they are as slippery as ice. Climbers be aware!

Yabba Falls (Top Plunge) drops 80m into The Showerroom. Dominic has abseiled down the falls in the water, for Kathmandu magazine. He is believed to be the first to do so, although SAS soldiers have trained in the area at one time, and the recovery of a body after a fatal fall has occurred previously but by different routes..

Later in the day about 10 feet from where I took this pigeon's picture I found him dead in the road. It didn't appear that he was hit by a car. There were fallen branches around him. It looks as if something was very wrong and the bird took a fatal fall from the tree above. I do not intend this to be a morbid twisted picture but it was just odd to see this after taking its picture just a little while before.

Many visitors were compelled to hang over the edge of the cliffs that define this deep canyon. This woman embraces the beauty while defying the danger. I looked up the statistics and it turns out that about one out of 2 million visitors does have a fatal fall at the canyon.
