As we sit, heads bowed in prayer, I felt compelled to pay tribute to my oldest brother Barnard with this lone leaf of solitude. Be at peace brother.

Looking out toward the final resting place of the Southern Cloud.

The Southern Cloud, registered VH-UMF, was one of five Avro 618 Ten three-engined aircraft flying daily airline services between several Australian cities for Australian National Airways in the early 1930s.

On 21 March 1931, the Southern Cloud departed at 8:10 AM from Sydney for Melbourne. On board were six passengers and two crew, including pilot Travis "Shorty" Shortridge. Weather conditions en route were hazardous and much worse than predicted. The aircraft never reached its destination and disappeared.

The search for the missing aircraft lasted eighteen days and involved over twenty aircraft. No trace of the missing aircraft was found. Airline co-owner Charles Kingsford-Smith joined the search and "may have flown over the crash site, but with the aircraft having burned it would be very difficult to distinguish from the air and so the discovery wasn't made."

It was Australia's first major airline disaster. Australian National Airways folded later that year as a result of both this and another loss. A film inspired by the accident, Secret of the Skies, was released in 1934.

The Southern Cloud's fate remained a mystery for 27 years until 26 October 1958. On that day, Mr. Tom Sonter, a worker on the Snowy Mountains Scheme, accidentally discovered the wreck. The crash site was in heavily timbered mountainous terrain within the Snowy Mountains about 25 km (16 mi) east of the direct Sydney–Melbourne route. Investigations concluded that the severe weather conditions at the time of the flight most likely contributed to the crash.

A man named Stan Baker had been booked to fly on the fateful journey, but cancelled prior to the flight, and travelled by train instead. As a result of the aircraft's disappearance, he harboured a lifelong fear of flying – which was proved justifiable when he was killed in the 1950 Australian National Airways Douglas DC-4 crash.

In Don Bradman's book 'Farewell To Cricket' he mentions that he flew in Southern Cloud with pilot Shortbridge from Adelaide to Melbourne, then to Goulburn not long before the tragedy. He described the trip as a 'bumpy journey'….Wikipedia

It can only be Blackpool....2010

What a cool scene I sensed here as I turned the corner first. As always, the people were helpful and so very nice. Many are rather curious, or let's put it this way, they pretend to be curious. (¬‿¬)

The composition was already clear to me, as I had already been here the day before and was able to memorize my position well. This photo is perhaps a little more sombre, but on closer inspection, the joy and colors here have by no means disappeared. Because these details, joy and color will always be part of my photos.

I love her art Hania Rani so young and so talented. The song Glass the video ♫ was recorded in Berlin and many sequences were shot in the district where I grew up. Speaking of Berlin, I may soon have something completely new from Berlin in terms of photography. But will that be something for Flickr? I'm not sure yet. Anyway, I won't have much time to share photos anytime soon, but I'll try to keep an eye on your excellent work.

On October 24th, during one of my Los Angeles layovers, I grabbed the opportunity and headed a mountain ridge in Los Padres National Forest to capture Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS with the Milky Way.

I started shooting about 10 minutes before the beginning of dark night. This gave me a slight orange glow on the horizon and helped to mitigate the light pollution from Vandenberg Space Force Base in the West. Furthermore, the low western horizon at my elevated shooting position allowed me to capture the Milky Way core reasonably high in the sky, despite the late season.

When it was fully dark, I was able to see Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS with my naked eye. While approaching the inner Solar System, the orbital period of Tsuchinshan-ATLAS was calculated to be about than 80,000 years. However, recent gravitational interactions altered this orbit, and the most current calculations show that it is on a hyperbolic path, meaning that it will never return.

A good time to bid the cosmic wanderer farewell.

Fall is fading fast here in western Wyoming and Eastern Idaho. The temperatures have dropped and snow is on the way! But it has been a glorious Fall! In this image of the Grand Teton the horses seem oblivious to the beautiful color and scenery around them.

I was "requested" to remove the link from this photo, which pointed to a stream with stolen photos, mine amongst them.

The flickr staff threatened to delete my account, but didn't do anything to remove my photos from the thief's stream.

The problem is that the thief marked my photos as "Friends and Family" only. Flickr says I have to produce proof that the guy is stealing my photos, send a letter with my photo and the online address of the stolen photo. But I obviously can't since I don't have access to photos he marked as "F&F" and the thief blocked people who he had marked as "F&F" and warned me about the theft.

So, once again, Flickr shows disrespect towards its honest users. Way to go, no wonder so many people are leaving the site.

Tiger

1992ish - March 2, 2015

Rest In Peace

Tiger came into Allison's life on October 8th, 1994. Tiger was pregnant at the time and it was least her second litter. The paper tossing, lap running cat and Allison were companions for over twenty years.

Tiger lived a great life. She was and is loved. She is and will be missed. She will never be forgotten. May she find rest and peace and the best of luck in her new adventure.

Farewell Tiger.

Farewell to Honest Ed's which has closed after 68 years in business, and hello to new developments in the year 2017. The site will be redeveloped into residences and new retail space.

This pic of Acela power car #2017 tearing up the NEC seems appropriate for the occasion. I had some great trips this year and seemingly have barely scratched the surface of editing stuff. Here's to a happy and healthy 2018 for all!

The dark spit in the foreground is a 24 km sand bar and nature reserve as it is popular with migrating birds heading north at this time of year. To get to this viewpoint involved a 30 minute uphill hike in semidarkness over a very stoney 4WD path. Unfortunately it is also a horse trail and some of the darker "rocks" were not what they seemed.

This image, and the preceding 1325 in my photostream were all taken on an iPhone and post-processed on an iPhone. Along the way I explored the world around me with heightened curiosity, joined a great community, made friends, became creative, and have had the happiest of times. For me Steve Job's legacy is not about the hardware or software, but that he enabled me to create my own legacy of creative expression, forever embellished with the comments and kind words of everyone here. What a gift!
