This little mama was amazing. She was working her tail off feeding these little fledglings. She was bringing them caterpillars at a rate of about 3 per minute - which is amazing! I've never seen a parent warbler work that quickly. We were lucky to find this mama bird with fledglings on our only sunny day.

White-throated Sparrow, Died in downtown Washington D.C. in the fall or spring of 2012 from striking a building at night. Retrieved by the Lights out DC program
Photographed on September 5 at North Beach (Lake Michigan) in Racine, WI. It was hanging out with some Sanderlings and a Baird's Sandpiper.
Saw my first pintail and it was a beauty. Did not see a female but they are hard to identify unless paired up with a male.

The monarchs gather each fall at the Peninsula Point State Park in Stonington (Upper Peninsula of Michigan). They wait there along the shores of Lake Michigan for a north wind or favorable flying conditions. When the time is right, they fly en masse over Lake Michigan and continue on their long journey to Mexico.
This time they flew past me coming from the other direction and closer. This time I noticed the green speculum patch on several of the wings. The blue part of the wings is called the coverts but in addition, many ducks have a patch called the speculum with a bright iridescent color, in their case, it is green. Look close, can you see it? It is under the blue and you can only see it on the top side of the extended wing.
