Template on left is a Freaky Friend- like a beanie buddy or whatever, with a Radiohead Bear evil twist. Eyes = buttons, mouth = stitches. On right is my 11th hour attempt at sewing the real thing. Despite kind twitter humour & encouragement, I still failed. I do hope the kids can do a better job tomorrow at my School Holiday Activity. I certainly nailed the Freaky bit...
I was all excited about trying out this experiment to shoot some still lives of my "Where the Wild Things Are" action figures. I even went out and bought some fake plants for the background.
Talk about a downer. Just couldn't get the angle and composition right, the lighting wasn't working, couldn't get the background right...and to top it off I broke Goat Boys leg...poor Goat Boy. This is probably the only shot slightly worth it, outside of some practice "portrait" shots I took. Anyone want a portrait shot of Max?
December 2006
A complete fail that day. Took two images while doing the Garden Birdwatch. Both were rubbish, but this at least had something in it, if at the top of the frame and out of focus.
While counting birds, I was more interested in the two voles and mouse appearing.
I meant to get something else later in the day, but not sure where the time went, as usual. Humble apologies for this one!
This was my first trip ever to New York City, NY. My fantastic tour guide was Pastor Gary Evensen of the North Jersey United Pentecostal Church. The variety of pictures shows you what life is like in the day time. As the day progressed, it started raining. However, we walked, road trains, and navigated the subway which was an incredible experience in itself. The only thing I failed to take photos of was our meal at the incredible and famous 2nd Avenue Deli which is totally kosher.
1) It's sideways.
2) It's horribly out of focus.
3) The auto white balance was left on.
4) artifacts artifacts artifacts.
5) I hate the fourth of July.
The sideways problem and the artifacts could be resolved with the use of some imageMagic scripting, but due to the atrocious focus problems... I'm not going to bother.
I got up on the hill late and the fireworks started right before I finished setting up. The rush to be ready as soon as possible, combined with my brontophobia, caused me to forget to set the focus. Doh.
So some lessons learned for anyone who'd like to do a time-lapse of fireworks:
1) Use a quicker exposure than I did (3s), I think 1s would be good.
2) Shoot reasonably open. I shot this at f/4. At 1s I'd have gone f/2.8.
3) Turn off auto white balance so that the color isn't flickering around.
4) Use a slower frame rate. This is 29.92fps. 15 would look less spastic.
5) Shoot in small raws, then use ImageMagic or an equivalent to pull the size down, rotate, and convert to 8b without nasty artifacts.
6) 70mm is a bit too wide for shooting from the Rocket Park hill. 100mm would have been better.
7) Take a test shot to make sure focus is on and framing doesn't blow.
8) My intervalometer rules.
9) The 4th still sucks, particularly when there was thunder all afternoon
10) I like pie.
Film test using a vintage Polaroid Supercolor Auto Focus 3500 (white body version of Polaroid SX-70 Sonar One Step Pronto)
Tests have determined that three out of five of this model Polaroid suffers from faulty focus. The design is a manual focus (wheel above the lens) that clicks into auto focus (after turning past infinity). The switch-over to auto focus is the trouble area.
The camera that shot these samples suffered from this problem.

Close, but FAIL. This was the car in front of us on the way to work this morning in the car park (grid lock). Kate didn't get it, of course.
Bad angle, composition, and overcooked noodle flexible pole with lots of rebound.
"I haven't failed, I've found ten thousand ways that don't work." - Ben Franklin
"Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better" - Samuel Beckett
Off to see if I can fail better. The mounts were well triangulated and stable, only the pole let me down. Need a better pole for certain! No use photochomping the rig out as it's not worth the effort.
Only those who refuse to walk the path of success will truly reach a higher plane of wrong
perhaps it is because I have spent so many hours studying the teachings of the guide that this has been made possible
All I know is that I am now at one with my Fail
It is Day 36
