This is a seriously failed attempt at getting a night panoramic of downtown Roanoke. I'm not exactly sure where I went wrong with my camera settings, but I know I can do better than this. I'm gonna' go back & try this again tomorrow or the day after. I can't believe how much noise is in this series. My camera was set at ASA200. I'm gonna' try ASA100 next time, shorter exposure, larger aperture. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'll take the time to stitch the final/improved photo...
We spotted this red tailed hawk on a tree and it then launched into a full speed attack into a bush in front of us. Here is the hawk taking a brief pause after the failed attack before it took off

So I wanted to try this new fangled sous vide low-temperature cooking. Bought a not-so-special T-Bone / Porterhouse and vacuumed it with a bit of steak pepper and herb salt. Got my styrofoam cooler and added a hole in the top for a little silicone tube, and some drainage holes. Hot water collects in the funnel, flows through tube to the bottom of the cooler and drains just under the lid. Thermometer pierced through lid to do whatever it is that thermometers do. Just over 7 hours at 55°C. Searing in hot pan produces lots of smoke, little else. The meat is tender throughout, but I miss the range of textures you get from a "traditional" steak: crispy on the outside, with a juicy pink centre and melt-in-your-mouth fat... This steak was greasy and tallowy, with a hint of fishiness, though (to be fair, I don't know how far the method is to blame for the Flavour Fail).
I will definitely not try this again for steak. I may give it another try for some other cut of meat.
From the Liverpool Daily Post (a sadly missed quality regional newspaper) , Dated Monday 19th September 2005, an article reporting on the previous Saturdays trip from Liverpool to York, which featured 71000 ‘ Duke of Gloucester' only between Liverpool and Stalybridge, being failed on arrival there due to a faulty valve. From here 66081 took the train to York, but to quote later from the piece (which wouldn’t fit on the scanner) –
“A preserved veteran diesel locomotive Class 40,No.40165 (that’s what was printed!) was obtained to return the special train from York. By lucky chance, the locomotive was built at the Vulcan Foundry, Newton le Willows in 1960. Prof Toyne, a dedicated rail enthusiast said – Triumph was snatched from the jaws of defeat. We left Liverpool hauled by the ultimate British steam locomotive and returned pulled by one of the first diesels to replace steam. Nothing could have been more symbolically appropriate”.
Managed to get to York for the return, probably the last time various cranks have dropped what they were doing at short notice to chase some unplanned 40 mileage.

As detailed here, when the 35 was revised in September 2011 as part of SCC Bus Review phase 2, the one way loop arrangement, used by terminating services, of running westbound along Lightwater Road, ended.
However, three journeys a day did actually continue to follow the old route, for running time reasons (one of which was in the 'at these mins past each hour' section of the SCC timetable, so you didn't know it did it!).
I've made a few attempts to snap one of the 35s which continued to come along Lightwater Road. All have failed, variously, bus didn't run/followed normal route instead etc etc.
With the 2015 changes seeing the Briar Avenue area left unserved, I gave it one more go... the bus ran straight down Red Road, and I missed it...

Here is the first try with the liner in. The rocks were placed around the edge, but didn't end up hiding enough of the liner. We weren't happy with the final product, so I've ripped it out and started again.

Rolleiflex SL26 camera
Fakmatic 35mm to 126 Adapter / Eastman Hi-Con 2369
The task was to see if I could get the Fakmatic adapter to work in the Rollei SL26. Mission accomplised by clipping a sprocket to make a larger rectangular sprocket so that the camera would sense it and reset the shutter. It worked...but I grossly fogged the film by thinking it was orthochromatic and loading it with a red safety light! Back to the drawing board!

This reminds me. Once I went to my bank to see if I could buy some Japanese Yen.
The lady told me they didn't use Yen no more. They switched to Euro.
I said wha when???
She said oh a while back!
I said, but but... but (doubting myself) Japan is not part of the EU... is it?
She said, Oh they are!... aren't they?
Then she went to the back office to ask.
She came back and apologized. "Oh sorry I didn't know Japan is on the other side of the world teehee!"

Raíces (roots) is always cold ...
It's the nearest volcano Xinantécatl community. Here wake up and see the ice on the leaves of trees, plants or land is part of the daily life of its inhabitants.
Between six and nine blankets at night during the winter season, stove lit in the morning and late-nights and two jackets that do not become immune to respiratory diseases, the inhabitants of that town circumvent low temperatures.
Ten minutes before eight o'clock, small childrens start arriving plumps in sweaters and scarves to school, crossing litter of ice that forms on the grass adjacent football field.
Although they have asked the Directorate move one hour the entry, at least for the time, parents have failed to address their supplication authorities and children are contracting some respiratory diseases.
"If they entered at nine ...that would be fine, as the sun rises, heat and ice thaws, because we got up at six and it is very cold," said Mr. Alfredo Carbajal, who has three children, two in elementary and one in high school.
"Two days my son didn't came to school the because he got sick, just now being reintegrated" he explained, after mentioning that from 14:00 no longer attending physician at the Health Center Loma Alta, place that belongs to the community.
In addition, he warned, the cold is just beginning, for January and February are characterized by lower temperatures.
Meanwhile, Don Eduardo de la Cruz explained that when someone gets sick or have an emergency after 14:00, you need to go to the doctor to Toluca and Zinacantepec, forcing them to spend more money and more time.
"In the afternoon is when it requires more of the doctor, because in the morning you have to work or take the kids to school," he argued, after considering that we need a doctor 24 hours a day, at least in cold weather and equip the health center with enough medication to address respiratory diseases.
"Monday was one of my nieces with their children and there was no medicine, we must buy them, it's a pitty, we better went to the privet doctor" he lamented.
Don Eduardo indicated that the inhabitants of Raíces have learned to build their own stoves with fireplace; daytime collect firewood, they do not use charcoal or gas to prevent poisoning, and they turn it off at bedtime.
When it's not cold are covered on average with five blankets to sleep, but during winter are four more.
"When it's not cold, a man walks "Nomás" (just) with a shirt and a sweater, but right now we put two shirts on, a sweatshirt and a jacket; bottom a sport pants and trousers, and double sock for not feeling so cold, "he said.
Meanwhile, Ramon Ramirez, who stays in the National Park "de los venados", in the foothills of the volcano, was sleeping with two jackets and fire arranged beside his bed, although it off at night is lit since awake until 18:00, when the temperature begins to return the toxic gases into the room, despite the fireplace.
