Of the low-paying factory jobs that young people could sometimes scrape up in southern Ontario in the mid-80s, my stint at HTL was actually one of the best. A couple dollars above minimum wage, and interesting (I worked an electronically controlled saw, and drove a forklift), it of course could not last. Nine months after I started, it burned to the ground. I took this shot of my work area (and the remains of the factory walls) a couple of days later. The big arm is part of the saw.
I wasn't into photography yet, and I believe this was snapped with a crappy Kodak Instamatic (ie, pocket plastic camera).

My Praktica VLC3 just arrived on September 14, 2022 in Lyon, France.
This Praktica VLC of the 3rd generation (1978-1981) was manufactured By VEB Pentacon in Dresden, Germany. It came with orignal Pentacon accessories including, a shade hood for its normal lens Pentacon "electric Multi-coated" 1:1,8 f=50mm, a waist finder, a straight magnification finder, and the regular pentaprism. There are also 6 different finder glasses, the Pentacon hot shoe for a flash, lens and body caps, and a Praktica ever-ready case.
The camera has a CdS photometric circuitry powered by an unusual 4.5V battery that I replaced by a set of 3 LR44 alkaline batteries in series. As the ASAHI PENTAX Spomatic SP, the bridge circuit is insensitive to the voltage difference. To be independent of the finders, the cell is functioning behind the mirror as in the Topcon Super D or the Miranda Auto Sensorex EE.
This Praktica operates at full aperture using an electrical transmission of the diaphragm value using 3 contacts on the M42 lens mount. It could however operates any non electric M42 lenses at real aperture too. The shutter is made a vertical steel curtains making the X-flash synchro at about 1/125 s.
Overall Pentacon produced 85 000 Praktica VLC between 1974 and 1981 among about 3 millions of Praktica "L" (LLC MTL TL L etc).
The Tannery Row Artist Colony resides in the complex of Tannery Row. This campus was originally constructed as a shoe factory by the Bona Allen Company. The Shoe Factory building was erected in 1919 by Bona Allen. the plant experienced nearly immediate success by using scrap leather pieces from other divisions of Bona Allen. This gave them a competitive edge, and added to the overall success of Bona Allen. In 1921 there were 521,000 pairs of shoes produced and sold from this building. Output was steadily increased to 3,000 pairs per day. In 1941 the employees of the shoe factory unionized and staged a strike. Bona Allen retaliated by closing the facility. Six months later, the US Army re-opened the plant to repair Army shoes and boots. By August 1943, 1.5 million pairs of shoes had been rebuilt here. 705 civilian employees worked here, turning out 6,000 pairs of shoes per day during World War II. The operation closed after the war.
The Allen family played a role in the city of Buford from 1867 until 1977. Although they ran a wide range of businesses including a livery, shoe manufacturing and harness factory, the Allen's would become most famous for the tannery they began in the city in 1873. In much the same way as Dalton, Georgia is famous for its carpets, Buford, Georgia was famous for its leather. Buford, at times, has billed itself as the "Leather City."
The industrial base gave the city unprecedented growth in its time, surpassing other Gwinnett County cities in population in 20 years and retaining its lead in population for a quarter of a century. The tannery also created a semi-pro baseball team in the mid-1920's, the Shoemakers.
On February 4, 1909, The Bona Allen harness plant and box factory burned to the ground, according to a story in the Harness Herald. The estimate loss was $75,000 to $100,000 and was only partially covered by insurance. The 1910 U. S. Census showed Buford to be the largest town in Gwinnett County with 1683 people. Lawrenceville, the county seat, had 1618.
When the tannery was rebuilt in 1911, it was renamed Bona Allen and Sons, although the Sons was dropped after Bona Allen Sr. died in 1925. Manufacturing of leather shoes in the new plant began in 1913. As control of the company passed from Bona to his sons, they benefited from an increase in the use of horses from 1925 to 1940.
In 1968 the tannery was sold to Tandy Corporation. Most people today associate the name with Radio Shack, but in 1968 Tandy also owned a chain of leather goods stores with a brisk mail-order business and management was trying to vertically integrate to cut costs. Georgia identified the Bona Allen Tannery as a point source facility for pollution under the Federal Water Pollution Control Amendments of 1972. Clean-up of existing pollution and reducing future pollution to meet the requirements of the Clean Water Act in 1977 cost Tandy Corp. a good deal of money and increased future costs for the plant. When the facility burned in 1981 Tandy Corp. chose not to rebuild.
