House of Frazer (David Evans) on the western edge of Gwent Square. Looks like workmen are carrying out a recce of the building prior to the makeover. Thought I’d get a few photos in before the imminent revamp of the town centre.
The buildings around Gwent and Monmouth Squares are getting a gaudy cladding makeover. Additionally, the Gwent Square bandstand and the much loved “Dai & Myfanwy” clock on the Congress Theatre are being removed, fate unknown. On Monmouth Square, the Water(less) Gardens are being removed and built over.
Barker House in Edenton is getting a facelift. The historic Barker House, built in 1782, was the home of Thomas and Penelope Barker. The top part is under a shroud due to repairs, so left it out. Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) building FINALLY getting a face-lift. Hardly inspires confidence in the municipal corporation's ability to clean the city when its HQ has years of moss and pollution deposited on it. Looks so different once cleaned up! According to clevelandskyscrapers.com, when it was built as part of the Van Sweringen brothers' Union Terminal station, it was the tallest building outside of New York City until 1967, when the Prudential Center was built in Boston. The related earthmoving required for the Union Terminal complex was the second largest excavation in history after the Panama Canal. It is also the second tallest building in Ohio.
