My driver/guide suggested we stop by this funeral; we had been talking a lot about Balinese culture all day and I think he thought this would be interesting. He said that we could go to it and take photos etc. I felt really uncomfortable doing that but he insisted.
He said that often funerals are scheduled for a certain time of the year (not right after the person's death) and then people gather at a special temple that only deals with cremation and the funeral ceremony. The ceremony is very elaborate and expensive, most activities designed to purify the deceased. An ornate funeral tower--the height of which is determined by the nobility of the deceased--is built and the body is carried in that to the cremation grounds. I was surprised that people seemed to be happy and celebrating; my guide told me that often the cremation happens many months after the person's death but also there are offerings that are blessed and then shared with the mourners. Getting these offerings brings good luck so people were happy when they were able to get some.
The ashes of the deceased are taken to be sprinkled in the sea and some are kept in a spirit house either in the family's temple or in the local temple. The spirit of the deceased is believed to be living in that house.
In the photos you will see men dressed in black; they are employees of the temple who take care of the cremation and the collection of ashes.

For one weekend only, April 18 & 19, 2015, commemorative events are planned including scheduled reenactments of Lincoln's funeral cortege and placing of the coffin in the center of the Museum's National Historic Landmark Roundhouse. Visitors will be able to "view" the martyred President in an authentic reproduction of his casket. Civil War soldier and civilian reenactors will participate in the solemn ceremonies and researched authentic funeral music will be provided by the Federal City Brass Band. The Museum's 1863 locomotive "Thatcher Perkins" will accompany the ceremony and be decorated exactly like the Lincoln Funeral Train and will remain on exhibit throughout the remainder of 2015. Each ceremony will be narrated by noted author and guest curator Daniel Carroll Toomey. Times for the formal narrated commemoration will take place Saturday, April 18 at 11:30am & 1:30pm and Sunday, April 19 at 11:30am. Visitors may view the casket, exhibits and interact with soldier and civilian mourners throughout the day. Special artifacts in the Alex. Brown & Sons Exhibition Gallery will include an exact reproduction of the overcoat Lincoln wore on the night of his assassination, a hand-made scale model of the Lincoln Funeral Car and Civil War veteran's ribbons and uniforms. The handsome men in the blue-ish kilts are members of the family who were sweet enough to let us take this picture. It was such a touching service, one of the most heartfelt services I've ever done. Those are the ones that tear at you, that you always remember.

Ballard was gunned down Wednesday April 26, 2017 in a Bear-area Wawa parking lot when he approached a suspicious vehicle and the passenger jumped out and began firing at him. Ballard fell after being hit, and the shooter continued to fire rounds into the trooper before fleeing to his family's Middletown-area home.
