'The Citadel' in Forcalquier is in fact an octagonal structure - the chapelle Notre-Dame de Provence - which is built on the site of an earlier citadel.
The site dominates the town and, in the Middle Ages, was the location of a fortified château built as a residence for the counts of Forcalquier and Provence. The building was severely damaged during the siege of 1481, and was finally destroyed in the Wars of Religion in 1601.
The chapel that currently occupies the site was built in 1875 and offers a panoramic view of the town and surrounding countryside. It has a unique, open air, manual, carillon (to the right of the building in the photograph) which plays a variety of tunes on Sunday mornings. The site is open to the public who can watch the carillonneur in action.
A calade is a Provençal term for area paved with small tightly packed stones, usually taken from fields or the banks of streams, and sometimes arranged in patterns. Calades are almost always built on a slope to facilitate the run-off of water.
Here a rose arch has been built above a calade arranged into a series of steps.

Forcalquier's church had its status raised to that of co-cathedral in the 11th century, when political intrigue left the bishop unable to take his seat at the diocese's original cathedral in nearby Sisteron.
This photograph, taken from the Café Le Bourguet in Forcalquier, shows people waiting for the start of the fireworks to celebrate the fête nationale.
The fête nationale is celebrated on 14 July each year in France. It commemorates (amongst other things) the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789; hence, in the English speaking world, it is often simply referred to as "Bastille Day".
This square (1x1) black and white photograph was taken in poor light, in a passageway between two buildings, on a cold, wet, and overcast day in Forcalquier, Alpes de Haute Provence, France.
It was intended to be a photograph of a black metal handrail beaded with rain, but it was photo-bombed by somebody walking down the steps with a shopping bag.
It was raining, and it was cold, so I didn't hang around for a second shot. Looking at it now, I wish I had.
This is a photograph of Forcalquier (centre left), the nearest town to Saint Michel L'Observatoire, as seen from Saint Michel L'Observatoire. The Citadel and the Cathedral are just visible from this distance.
The snow covered hills in the distance are the Provençal préalpes around Digne-les-Bains.
This panorama shows the view from the Citadelle in Forcalquier looking out towards Volx and the Roche Amère.
The village of Saint Michel l'Observatoire boasts a national and international low altitude facility for astronomers - l'Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP). It was here that the first confirmed sighting of an exoplanet was made on 6 October 1995.
The village also enjoys an average of 170 cloudless nights per year, which was part of the reason the observatory was built there. Unfortunately it also suffers from a degree of light pollution. Apart from the stars, this long exposure of the night sky (25 seconds) also shows the light from Forcalquier reflecting off of the clouds.

This photo was taken looking towards Notre-Dame-du-Bourguet cathedral from which all of the fireworks were launched.
Forcalquier's church had its status raised to that of co-cathedral in the 11th century, when political intrigue left the bishop unable to take his seat at the diocese's original cathedral in nearby Sisteron.
The current church was begun in the early 1200's, replacing the former Romanesque style building with this one, done in what was then the ''new'' Gothic style.
Its organ, by Pierre Marchand, was installed in 1627; numerous additions, renovations and rebuilds have occurred since, however, and the present organ-case, designed by Prosper Moitessier, dates to 1847.

The lights at the centre / bottom of the frame are from Saint-Maime, with lights from Valensole visible behind them, The diffuse sky glow is from the lights of Manosque and Forcalquier. The lights from a passing aircraft can be seen in the lower left-hand part of the frame.
I came across this impromptu street garden in the historic center of Forcalquier where most of the old stone houses are packed so closely together there is no room for a more traditional garden.
The photo was taken on 19th December, which might explain the presence of the Christmas decorations.
