I've always loved the beginning BW segment of the Wizard of Oz film. In particular the scenes where Dorothy meets Professor Marvel just before the storm brews up. The sepia tones, the dusty landscape, the dark clouds, the shadows, it's all part of classic visual storytelling. It sets the mood and atmosphere before even a word of dialog is spoken. I think, like most of us, scenes from that film are hard wired into my mind because we first viewed it at such a young age, and probably multiple times. All these years later, I still react to environments that remind me of the film. I'm insipred to attempt to recreate them photographically.

My word for 2014. To fear·less, to face my fears, to push through them and come out okay (and hopefully in a better place).

Are you worried?
Do you have many "what if" thoughts?
You are IDENTIFIED with your mind, which is projecting itself into an imaginary future situation and creating fear.
There is no way you can cope with such a situation because it doesn´t exist. It´s a mental phantom.
You can stop this health_and_life-corroding insanity simply by acknowledging the present moment. ~ Eckhart Tolle
Beibei has an inexplicable fear of the kitchen tap! He was on the countertop being given a brushing down but when I turned the tap on, he jumped onto the floor and could only stare at the shiny metallic object.

We'd had a day when it was too misty for landscape shots, so I'd been playing with waves on a remote headland watching a small flock of Purple Sandpiper. They were also having to keep moving as breaking waves kept moving them on. I nearly got washed away with giant waves .
It was exhilarating, but later that afternoon the sky cleared and the sea became a millpond. It was hard to believe it was the same day. Fear of Drowning is by British Sea Power.
As you get closer to a fire like this, something inside of you screams to turn around.
This is a forest fire in Colorado in 2012. It was over 50 miles away as I took this picture through a dark window while driving.
The Waldo Canyon Fire was briefly the most destructive in Colorado's history, until the Black Forest burned over 1000 homes in a week the following year. In this picture, the Waldo Canyon had been burning for about a week.

this is one of two photos on my stream that have false viewing stats, accumulated rapidlly between october and december 2022. other flickr users have experienced similar stats inflation in this period, for reasons known only to flickr. i reckon under normal circumstances this photo would have accumulated between 6-7000 views by january 2023. the other one with false stats is here

Just a simple glider I made for Hobgoblin in my series. Sorry for the poor angle shot but you get the gist. :P
Fear keeps us focused on the past or worried about the future. If we can acknowledge our fear, we can realize that right now we are okay. Right now, today, we are still alive, and our bodies are working marvelously. Our eyes can still see the beautiful sky. Our ears can still hear the voices of our loved ones.

beyond flickr and beyond fear, we're here:
I, as do many other folk have a completely irrational fear of spiders. This particular time of year they are everywhere. As an accomplished gardener you'd think I would have overcome this, but sadly I haven't and which has caused quite some fun in my family when I run scared around my cottage garden in my wellies. Yesterday I did have to admire the beauty of nature and the spiders talent to make such beautiful webs, and how they catch the autumn sunlight. So, I took my extension tubes and decided to get up close and personal. I admit I was terrified, my palms were clammy and heartbeat was racing. I tried to make the image a creative one using the light given and the reflections of the web and the sun bouncing from the spider. I hope I have made this macro image an artistic one... and yes, they bring me 'fear'! have a great Friday and hope you like my brave image ~ KissThePixel2018
Fear
It is said that before entering the sea
a river trembles with fear.
She looks back at the path she has traveled,
from the peaks of the mountains,
the long winding road crossing forests and villages.
And in front of her,
she sees an ocean so vast,
that to enter
there seems nothing more than to disappear forever.
But there is no other way.
The river cannot go back.
Nobody can go back.
To go back is impossible in existence.
The river needs to take the risk
of entering the ocean
because only then will fear disappear,
because that’s where the river will know
it’s not about disappearing into the ocean,
but of becoming the ocean
