Since his ancestor settled there in the 19th century, farming has been the only occupation for six generations of the family.

“Farming is a profession of hope”

― Brian Brett

Farming in this part of the state is still alive though the number of farms have diminished. The old tobacco barns have changed their usage, yet still provide the storage for crops and livestock. Where there are farms... hope springs eternal.

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day 2025 is celebrated on April 22, marking the 55th anniversary of this global event aimed at promoting environmental awareness and action. The theme for this year is "Our Power, Our Planet," focusing on the importance of renewable energy and collective action to combat climate change. Bonneville County, Idaho.

Northamptonshire is a rural county on the edge of both the Midlands and East Anglia. With just six main towns - Northampton is by far the largest - and no cities, its predominant feature is gently rolling farmland. Once known for its shoe industry, cheap foreign imports have now taken over and the numerous small shoe factories either converted or demolished. The large steelworks at Corby has closed, though it still has its tube manufacturing plant. With the M1 and the A14 both crossing the county, Northamptonshire has become a major warehousing and distribution centre with new warehouses seemingly being opened virtually every week. Despite this activity and the government's insistence that thousands of new homes be built here, it remains - at least for the moment - a relatively quiet backwater. It was known as the County of Squires and Spires, after its large country houses and estates and numerous beautiful churches. It is indeed still the county of Bridget Jones.

France Sept 2019 ... the apple farms were all ready for their rich pickings! Crates delivered ready and waiting for the seasonal pickers to fill them! I wondered what the apples were destined for?

This is one from earlier. Found it in my archives...Land preparation for planting...

Never talk about a farmer with your mouth full.

Live @ Fortezza dal basso, Livorno

On our third day of shooting, we were going to Bombay Beach on the Salton Sea. I asked my friend to stop if we had a good view of some haystacks. Its been a long time since I've driven through this area and I don't remember there being some much hay being produced. I looked online and cattle and hay are the two most types of farming done in this area.

Imperial Valley grows the most hay and cattle in the state of California and it shows when you drive through the countryside. We saw a feed lot with a capacity to hold 80,000 head of cattle crammed into the corrals. It was crazy how little space they had to even move. Well, the cattle have to eat and you have thousands of acres of alfalfa being grown. Along with the fields of hay, you have miles of canals like this one bringing water to the plants. Kind of hard to believe this is a desert area.

Vertical farming is the practice of growing crops in vertically stacked layers. It often incorporates controlled-environment agriculture, which aims to optimize plant growth, and soilless farming techniques such as hydroponics, aquaponics, and aeroponics.

My entry for the Space Jam 12x12 vignette category over on Flickr. I know vertical farms are more 'near-future' than 'science-fiction', but I believe this may be the primary source of farming for humanity someday. If you're curious, go ahead and look up the concept/test facilities already in use, they're amazingly cool!

Flew slowly to work Friday, against the wind, but it was cloud most of the way with a few breaks. I had to stay awake to catch anything.

Hope your weekend goes well. We have been celebrating our daughter's birthday with a party Friday and Italian dinner out tonight.
