I'm going to be posting a number of photos I took in Midwood a few days ago soon. (along with a story about misunderstood motives and stuff) But I saw this yesterday and it really needs to be seen.
This was a Mobil Station. There was a time when owning a gas station was a pretty good way to earn a living. But nowadays, it's extremely difficult to even turn a profit.
What you say! Well, the fact is that most of the profit from the sale of gasoline goes to the oil companies. The independent station owners are squeezed. They may make some money by having a mechanic on staff, they may have a small convienence store on the premises. But the going is still rough. So, someone wanted this piece of land for development, and the station owner is relieved to be finally free of the burden.
Thank you Exxon-Mobil for doing your part to help destroy my neighborhood.

There are quite a few Exxon stations like this in St. Pete, but I can't recall a single one over in Tampa. Then again, Tampa hardly has any Exxons. It's the little nuances like these that make the Bay Area interesting.
