Not being able to sleep this morning I decided to get out of bed and try my luck for sunrise. I called up Aaron who was awakened at 3am by loud sounds coming from below his apartment. With promising skies, we headed to this dry lakebed I had scouted out with Jave the night before. Upon arrival the clouds looked thick and ominous but fortunately Mother Nature cooperated as the clouds moved quickly and created some holes in the thick blanket of clouds enough to create the morning glow. With epic foreground textures that beautiful sunrise was the icing on the cake. Now, onto the story of how I found this place:

The previous evening, a large cloud front moved through the Bay Area and seemed to have potential for a beautiful sunset. I called up Jave for his thoughts and we ultimately ended up avoiding the coast in fear of fog. Instead we headed for the local south bay area swamps. Normally the swamps are filled with water but due to the dry climate this winter the swamps had mostly all dried up. Then we found this completely dried up lakebed that resembled terrain right out of Death Valley or a dried up desert. This lakebed was littered with bones and empty clam shells as all living things had been exterminated by the desiccation of the lake. Who would have thought there would be such landscape so close by?

I descended into the dried lakebed and snapped off some shots before the last of the sunset colors disappeared. Afterwards I decided to venture a bit farther and explore more of the area. That’s when things went south. Unfortunately the lakebed was not completely solidified and I mistakenly stepped on a soft patch. There I went sinking knee deep into a soft section. Within seconds, Jave yells out “We have a sinker!” Luckily I was not alone there and Jave and his buddy Matt were able to pry me out of that soft patch. What lengths we go to get our shots.

Briana just learned about the Amur Leopard * and is devastated.

Hannah tries to comfort her friend by telling there is still

some hope left and explaining what can be\is being done

to save this gorgeous, critically endangered animal from extinction.

First step is, as always, simply let people know about the

situation around the Amur leopard (Far East, Manchurian or the Korean

leopard.). It will be Hannah's (and of course Briana's) next

big school project.

* Amur Leopard is critically endangered wild cat, found in the

Russian Far East and North East China .

There are less than 35 of these cats left in the wild.

Think about it - some of you have more pet cats and rabbits than

this entire wild population.

Amur leopard has exceptionally beautiful fur, and thus

poaching is a main threat. People shoot these precious rare

creatures illegally to sell their fur.

Loss of prey and habitat, as always with endangered species, are

also a problem. Then there is a real danger of inbreeding when population

is so critically small. It's also serious risk for all Amur leopards currently held

in captivity.

Saving Amur tiger is a success, let's hope it's not too late for

the Amur leopard if we take action - any action, feels like not

enough people are aware of all the beautiful, important creatures we are

losing these days because of our greed, ignorance and barbaric approach.

There are few conservation success stories that can rival that of the Kirtland's warbler. Nearing extinction in the 1960's, it now has a breeding population of nearly 5000 birds, nearly all in Michigan. This year there has been discussion of removing it from the Federal List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife. These discussions are possible due to successful forest management practices carried out collaboratively by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Forest Service. If you zoom in on this image you can see the sunrise in the warblers eyes...fitting for a new phase in this amazing birds struggle to survive in an ever shifting landscape.

Thanks to Stefanie for pressing the shutter. Saw this place on the way back from lunch somewhere nearby where I stayed. Place was in a pretty bad shape though, had to patch out all the rubbish that was lying around. instagram.com/yanweitan

Victorias State Bird (Bird emblem).

The helmeted honeyeater is a passerine bird in the honeyeater family. It is a distinctive and critically endangered subspecies of the yellow-tufted honeyeater, that exists in the wild only as a tiny relict population in the Australian state of Victoria, in the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Reserve. This one is part of a captive breeding program at Healesville Sanctuary

Just beside the city of Dhaka these brick factories are silently destroying the environment with the clouds of smoke it exhales from the countless number of chimneys. The river Ganges [Buriganga] is already highly contaminated with oil and other industrial waste. The water has turned black and virtually no water being exists in these parts [around Dhaka] of the river.

It is time to turn around and try restoring what we have lost.

The San Diego Zoo is allowing guests to get a rare view into a special place, where some of the smaller multi-legged creatures of the world are rescued. The Arachnid Rescue Center is a section of the Zoo devoted to the care and feeding of invertebrate animals rescued from wildlife trafficking.

“Arachnids face the same threats as all other animals, and illegal smuggling is among them,” said Paige Howorth, San Diego Zoo entomologist. “Most people don’t realize that wildlife trafficking can affect all taxa, including arachnids and other invertebrates.”

The center is home to more than 65 individual arachnids, representing 19 species. Most of the spiders are tarantulas that came to the Zoo after being confiscated from smugglers. Wildlife trafficking, or the illegal poaching and smuggling of animals, plants or their parts, has become a serious conservation issue in the last few years. As wildlife officials work to stem the illegal trade, many accredited zoos, like San Diego Zoo Global, are providing sanctuary for the individual animals that are rescued by authorities.

In addition to tarantulas and scorpions, the center also maintains lesser-known arachnids such as whip spiders and vinegaroons. Guests at the San Diego Zoo’s Children’s Zoo can see the multi-legged residents, and the people who care for them, through large glass windows at the Arachnid Rescue Center.

Bringing species back from the brink of extinction is the goal of San Diego Zoo Global. As a leader in conservation, the work of San Diego Zoo Global includes on-site wildlife conservation efforts (representing both plants and animals) at the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, as well as international field programs on six continents. The work of these entities is inspiring children through the San Diego Zoo Kids network, reaching out through the Internet and in children’s hospitals nationwide. The work of San Diego Zoo Global is made possible by the San Diego Zoo Global Wildlife Conservancy and is supported in part by the Foundation of San Diego Zoo Global.

The Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) is a small species of heron, native to Europe, Africa and much of Asia.

Following over hunting and consequent regional extinction in the middle ages, the little egret was seen in the UK in significant numbers in 1989 and was breeding by 1996, the bird is now a common sight on wetland areas of the south coast.

The little egret has a 1 metre wing span and feeds on fish, amphibians, crustaceans and insects.

This bird was spotted in a flooded meadow in the Meon Valley, Hampshire.
