Standing at more than 3.5 metres tall the Mommoth is a dramatic symbol of species lost. The last of these massive beasts is thought to have died out around 4000 years ago due to climate change, habitat loss and hunting.

What is the purpose of a modern zoo? For the Melbourne Zoo their mission is very clear, "Fighting Extinction". www.zoo.org.au/fighting-extinction/

But they would be in accord with the Adelaide Zoo's four points:

1. Conservation

2. Education

3. Research

4. Recreation

www.zoossa.com.au/wp-content/uploads/The-Role-of-a-Modern...

Each of these are important objectives. But it is important to stress in an era when people are rightly concerned for animal welfare, that modern zoos do place the welfare of their animals at the top of the priority list. Tomorrow I'll give you an example of how far we have come in our changed perceptions of zoos and their purpose, and certainly in the way animals are kept.

One more point that needs to be stressed. None of the animals in this zoo (or I would suggest most modern zoos around the world) were taken from the wild. These animals are either bred in this zoo, or have been traded with other zoos around the country who specialise in certain breeding programs. Now this is very important.

The biggest problem we face with animal species around the world is the decline of biodiversity through loss of habitat. We are winning the war against poachers in most cases (but still more needs to be done), but what we are failing to do is control human population growth. If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times, the number one environmental issue in the world (from which all other problems follow) is the continued exponential human population growth.

Why is this so? (As Prof. Julius Sumner Miller used to educate us on TV in the 1970s.) Because humans need space. Space to live and grow their crops, and their (unfair) share of the natural resources. This means deforestation in large measure (especially in the regions of greatest population growth). Rainforests are cut down, and with it whole habitats for creatures so rare now as Orang-utans and Tigers. Something needs to be done to save these animals in the wild.

But zoos serve a vital role in researching animal needs and also maintaining their viability through breeding programs. We need zoos. They are an important part of the recreational life of our cities, but most of all, they are a lifeline for seriously endangered species.

So my first photographic project for 2021 is now complete! :)

This project involved me taking well over 2000 self-portraits in the forest!

WTF... I hear you ask... how narcissistic can you get!? Why would anyone want to do something like that!?

Well... you'll have to click on the link and watch the video to find out. ;)

En un mundo dónde la belleza ya no existe, porque el ser humano se ha encargado de destruirla con sus actos, permanecen expuestas en este "micromundo", 2 bellezas humanas, como símbolo de la belleza que un día reinó en la tierra.

Not being able to sleep this morning I decided to get out of bed and try my luck for sunrise. I called up Aaron who was awakened at 3am by loud sounds coming from below his apartment. With promising skies, we headed to this dry lakebed I had scouted out with Jave the night before. Upon arrival the clouds looked thick and ominous but fortunately Mother Nature cooperated as the clouds moved quickly and created some holes in the thick blanket of clouds enough to create the morning glow. With epic foreground textures that beautiful sunrise was the icing on the cake. Now, onto the story of how I found this place:

The previous evening, a large cloud front moved through the Bay Area and seemed to have potential for a beautiful sunset. I called up Jave for his thoughts and we ultimately ended up avoiding the coast in fear of fog. Instead we headed for the local south bay area swamps. Normally the swamps are filled with water but due to the dry climate this winter the swamps had mostly all dried up. Then we found this completely dried up lakebed that resembled terrain right out of Death Valley or a dried up desert. This lakebed was littered with bones and empty clam shells as all living things had been exterminated by the desiccation of the lake. Who would have thought there would be such landscape so close by?

I descended into the dried lakebed and snapped off some shots before the last of the sunset colors disappeared. Afterwards I decided to venture a bit farther and explore more of the area. That’s when things went south. Unfortunately the lakebed was not completely solidified and I mistakenly stepped on a soft patch. There I went sinking knee deep into a soft section. Within seconds, Jave yells out “We have a sinker!” Luckily I was not alone there and Jave and his buddy Matt were able to pry me out of that soft patch. What lengths we go to get our shots.

Briana just learned about the Amur Leopard * and is devastated.

Hannah tries to comfort her friend by telling there is still

some hope left and explaining what can be\is being done

to save this gorgeous, critically endangered animal from extinction.

First step is, as always, simply let people know about the

situation around the Amur leopard (Far East, Manchurian or the Korean

leopard.). It will be Hannah's (and of course Briana's) next

big school project.

* Amur Leopard is critically endangered wild cat, found in the

Russian Far East and North East China .

There are less than 35 of these cats left in the wild.

Think about it - some of you have more pet cats and rabbits than

this entire wild population.

Amur leopard has exceptionally beautiful fur, and thus

poaching is a main threat. People shoot these precious rare

creatures illegally to sell their fur.

Loss of prey and habitat, as always with endangered species, are

also a problem. Then there is a real danger of inbreeding when population

is so critically small. It's also serious risk for all Amur leopards currently held

in captivity.

Saving Amur tiger is a success, let's hope it's not too late for

the Amur leopard if we take action - any action, feels like not

enough people are aware of all the beautiful, important creatures we are

losing these days because of our greed, ignorance and barbaric approach.
