Tag des Geotops am 15.09.2013 (3. Sonntag im September) bei den Externsteinen mit Dipl.-Geol. Eike Grätzel

The Externsteine in the Teutoburg Forest is a natural stone formation in an otherwise non-rocky area. The stones were lifted from the horizontal into the vertical by glacial action. Some human processing has taken place on this aspect, but the other side is mostly natural.

The spelling of this site was standardised in the late 1800s, but the name has no connection with "external". Rather, it is likely named for MLG "Egge", a ridge.

Ein gemütlicher kleiner, sauberer Campingplatz mit freundlichem Service. Sehr gut geeignet für Wanderungen im Teutoburger Wald, z.B. zum Hermannsdenkmal und zu den Externsteinen.

Externsteine is a rock formation in western germany. The strange thing about the rocks is they're in an area of germany that's largly devoid of large rocks. People assume the rocks were the center of some ancient religion but no real proof has ever been found of this. However the rocks have been carved and decorated by people for centuries.

It's supposed to be one of those ancient places of power. And it is magnificent in it's ancient natural beauty.

Unfortunately I feel it's also rather spoiled by all those people who felt they needed to paint, felt tip, carve their names into it. You try to take pictures of the Externsteine that don't have people in them and find it's virtually impossible.

So as a place of power; not for me I guess, not this time anyway. Maybe I should come back in winter when everybody else will think twice about trying to climb those high and sometimes slippery steps to feel the place out?

The sun was out yesterday so we went on a bit of an explore and visited the quite dramatic Externsteine in the Teutoberger Wald of Ost-Westfalia. These stones have had spiritual/religious significance to the people of the region for centuries, going back to pre-Christian times, and have an interesting history - which may account for the random buskers including the Piper in the 5th image of this series. As you can see Spring hasn't quite arrived yet :-) For more on the Externsteine see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Externsteine
