The Externsteine are part of the predominantly built from sandstones of the Lower Cretaceous period Teutoburg Forest. Cave chambers in the rocks suggest early human use as cult and holy sites. The monumental rock group is today one of the most remarkable natural and cultural monuments in Central Europe.

The Externsteine is a distinctive sandstone rock formation located in the Teutoburg Forest, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The formation consists of several tall, narrow columns of rock which rise abruptly from the surrounding wooded hills.
The site draws about a million visitors a year, for a variety of reasons. Most are tourists who come to admire the beauty of the majestic rock formations that jut out from the flat, forested landscape.
But it is not only a geological curiosity, Externsteine is also reputed to be an ancient and sacred palaeolithic worshiping ground, and an astronomical calendar. Therefore, Externsteine became a mecca for Neo-pagans, Neo-Nazis and neo-pagan-Nazis.
The pagan ceremonies held at Externsteine take place three times a year: on the longest day of the year (June 21), the shortest day of the year (December 21) and on Walpurgis Night (“Night of the Witches”) on April 30.

The Externsteine near Horn in Lippe are a natural monument in Northwest Germany with a touch of magic.
Fields in the Spenge area in June. Not quite the middle of nowhere, but you can see it from there...
Looks like spring has finally arrived and we used Sunday for a tour to the Externsteine, a rock formation near Horn in Lippe, Germany. Despite regular visits this place still excites me and many others. More information about the place here

The Externsteine belong to the Teutoburger Wald and are a natural outcropping of five sandstone pillars, the tallest of which is 37 mtr high and form a wall of several hundred metres in length, in a region that is otherwise largely devoid of rocks. The pillars have been modified and decorated by humans over the centuries. The place has been an important location for religion and spiritual activities throughout history.
We used Ascension Day for a trip to the Detmold area, unfortunately the weather was not only a challenge for the cameras.
One of my early shots of the Externsteine, a natural monument in my area. A place of magic and history, always worth a visit. Horn, Lippe, Germany
