I just wanted to share this with you..... Faces of fellow travelers on an old ferry over a small Bushman river on the way to a Kazakh village in the Astrakhan region of Russia. They were all laughing at us (i assume:) 9 strange Americans, waving huge cameras at them, yelling something in the language that is little comprehended in this beautiful land where the unique lotus flower blossoms.... I tell you, it was quite the day...

Snowball Express XI was a great success as we welcomed nearly 1800 children and families of our fallen military heroes to Dallas for a week full of activities!
Beginning with the arrival of our generously donated charter flights by presenting sponsor American Airlines with all volunteer flight crews from all over the country, the families were taken by Greyhound motor coach and Patriot Guard escort to our host hotel, the Hilton Anatole Dallas. The hotel was filled with activities in the Teen and children lounges, and in the Gallo family lounge for the adults.
Day one began with our police and patriot guard escort to Fort Worth, completely shutting down highway 30 with a 48 school bus precession. Firefighters from Arlington lined the overpasses to wave and salute our families!
After arriving in Fort Worth, the annual Walk of Gratitude was held at the famous Fort Worth Stock Yards. The families were then treated to the Pawnee Bill Wild West Show at the Cowtown Coliseum. From there our families were taken to the Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base for a private concert by Gary Sinise & the Lt. Dan Band in a Hangar on base. Gary put on a great show as always for the families and then handed out teddy bears for all the children. Food was provided by Texas Land and Cattle, and prepared with the help of Chef Robert Irvine.
Day 2 included a fun day at four separate game centers around DFW. That evening everyone enjoyed a great dinner and entertainment at Medieval Times Show & Dinner.
The third day included our annual Talent Showcase presented by the Texas Music Project, followed by another amazing closing show by our Chief Fun Officer, David Hira.

Night of the Arts
There’ll be no time to sleep on the Night of the Arts, August 24!
Now, for the first time, this traditional city event is to be held on a Friday, to allow you to feast on the arts all night long. The 19th Night of the Arts takes in over 200 events in the city centre and suburbs. Time stops on Töölönlahti Bay, the Kaartinkaupunki district is transformed into a city art exhibition, delicious eats are set out in Kasarmintori Square and classic movies are shown at outdoor cinemas.

Apparently this was my 19th night of arts :) It was a small event when it first started and I was just a small 12 year old girl browsing it with my family.
Today the event literally conquers ALL central parts of the city! And has become a party of old and young, art lovers and curious first timers - each enjoying it in their own way.
A long way from home, the Ski-Train prepares to take University of Iowa football fans to Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, a mere 3 miles east of here. Coralville, IA.

The Dogu Express is a daily train from Istanbul to Kars. I took the train from Istanbul to Ezrurum, about 1000 km from Istanbul. Kars is a further 200 km along.
The timetable lists that it takes about 33 hours to cover the distance, however when I took the train to Ezrurum, it took 38 hours.

This 1952 product of #EMD first operated on the Bessemer & Lake Erie and made its way to TCRM in 2001. The A unit joins 2 Bs in the Louisville & Nashville classic blue & cream passenger paint scheme. The 819 is an incredible artifact to showcase the transition from steam to diesel in the early 1950s, especially when sitting next to No. 576 in a few years. Look for 819 on the point of this year's North Pole Express trains!"
