Simhadri Express & Rajahmundry, 1 Feb 1980

·

After spending 31 January 1980 in Calcutta, we took the Coromandel Express overnight to Waltair. The Coromandel Express went through Rajahmundry, but did not stop in 1980, as it was a very limited stop Calcutta-Madras train. In 1980, Air Conditioned 2 Tier (open) sleepers were not yet common in India and the Coromandel Express was the only train where we rode them. Today, they have replaced the old non-AC 1st Class for people wanting better than non-AC 2 or 3 tier sleepers , but not wanting to spend what AC 1st Class costs.

We probably ate breakfast in Waltair, then boarded the Simhadri Express for the run south to Rajahmundry. The Simhadri Express and the Taj Express, which we had ridden between Delhi and Agra, were the only 2 long distance broad gauge trains we rode with steam power. All others were diesel or electric. I sat at th door of our coach and watch Andrah Pradesh go by outside, including a couple of meets with WDM2 hauled freights and a local passenger train behind a backwards WG.

At Rajahmundry, we arrived about lunch time and went to a nearby restaurant for refreshments, however, after we got beer, we noticed a rooster on a perch in the kitchen and decided to try another place for food!

The shed staff at Rajahmundry treated us like long lost relatives...this was the case everywhere we went in India We had come to Rajahmundry specifically to see IRS class XB and XD engines as well as the large IR WT 2-8-4Ts. Unfortunately, the last XB, 22153, had been retired a short time earlier. Colin Garrat in his book "Legends of Steam" has a photo of it live at Rajahmundry in November 1979. We were able to get photos. Grahame asked about buying a steam whistle from IR and instead, the shed foreman gave him one. He had a worker mount it on an engine, and blow it to see that it met with Grahame's approval.

We also visited the DMU shop, where the staff was having trouble getting parts. The Brit members of our group suggested that they write to BR engineering, who might have been able to help them.

After our shed bash, we treated the loco foreman to dinner, and I recall us eating at a rooftop restaurant on a warm evening.

Later that night, we caught the overnight Godavari Express to Hyderabad. The name is appropriate. Rajahmundry is on the Godavari River, and the railroad crosses it on a long bridge there.

On Day 3, the families started the day with our annual "Walk of Gratitude" where each family member released a balloon in memory of their fallen hero on Main street in downtown Fort Worth. From there the families rode in another presidential motorcade to Sheriffs Posse Ranch in Weatherford where they were treated to a day of fun to include a rodeo, horse drawn carriage rides, and taught how to rope a calf! From there they headed to Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base for a special concert by Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band in the VR-39 Hangar!

Snowball Express remembers those fallen heroes who will never return, and honors the supreme sacrifice their families have made.

Since 2006, the mission of Snowball Express has been a simple, yet profoundly important one: Provide hope and new happy memories to the children of military fallen heroes who have died while on active duty since 9/11. We bring children together from all over the world to the Dallas Fort Worth, Texas area for a four-day experience filled with fun activities. Snowball Express serves the children who will never be reunited with their mom or dad.

Snowball Express XI was a great success as we welcomed nearly 1800 children and families of our fallen military heroes to Dallas for a week full of activities!

Beginning with the arrival of our generously donated charter flights by presenting sponsor American Airlines with all volunteer flight crews from all over the country, the families were taken by Greyhound motor coach and Patriot Guard escort to our host hotel, the Hilton Anatole Dallas. The hotel was filled with activities in the Teen and children lounges, and in the Gallo family lounge for the adults.

Day one began with our police and patriot guard escort to Fort Worth, completely shutting down highway 30 with a 48 school bus precession. Firefighters from Arlington lined the overpasses to wave and salute our families!

After arriving in Fort Worth, the annual Walk of Gratitude was held at the famous Fort Worth Stock Yards. The families were then treated to the Pawnee Bill Wild West Show at the Cowtown Coliseum. From there our families were taken to the Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base for a private concert by Gary Sinise & the Lt. Dan Band in a Hangar on base. Gary put on a great show as always for the families and then handed out teddy bears for all the children. Food was provided by Texas Land and Cattle, and prepared with the help of Chef Robert Irvine.

Day 2 included a fun day at four separate game centers around DFW. That evening everyone enjoyed a great dinner and entertainment at Medieval Times Show & Dinner.

The third day included our annual Talent Showcase presented by the Texas Music Project, followed by another amazing closing show by our Chief Fun Officer, David Hira.

Thank you to all of our sponsors and volunteers who help make this amazing week of tributes possible for these special families who have sacrificed so much for our nation. Please visit www.snowballexpress.org to see how you can help sponsor of volunteer for the 2017 event!

New eatery (I think it deserves that name!) beneath the multi-storey car park by the station. I couldn't believe this when I first saw it - I not sure I can now!

The couple bending down have just dropped their front door key down a screwed-down grating and were trying unsuccessfully to retrieve it!

Day 37 of 2015. For the first time in recorded history, San Francisco had no rain in the month of January. So today's storm — the Pineapple Express — was a welcome relief. This is the view from my home office in the Outer Richmond as the storm began this morning.

the concept of this photo was to have a quote and take a picture that expresses you. I wrote the quote " I'm expressing with my full capabilities." That is a song lyric from one of my favorite rap groups, nwa. Then I overlayed it on this graffiti wall of all popular skate brands. this wall is cool because I love the graffiti aspect of it.
