Surprising juxtaposition of signs posted on a wall in Le Marais, Paris

Street posters on urban walls can be interesting in a variety of ways. Often the colors are wildly juxtaposed, ranging from retro monochromatic looks to posters that go for very bright colors of paper, illustration, and text in an attempt to stand out from the other posters. They are not designed to last, and they often weather in interesting ways, with rips and runs and flaps and gouges. Interesting juxtapositions develop as the old layers are covered by the new and, over time, the new may fall off and reveal even older material.

These "Exposition Le Bikini" posters, in various sizes, were all over this part of Paris — we were walking through Le Marais. They may show up in some of my other street photographs from this visit, though not as central elements as in this one. I found the juxtaposition of "bikini" posters with posters for what I presume is a performance of very old Russian sacred music to be mildly jarring!

One of two stereoviews that have now both been identified thanks to Flickr users as being from the Paris Exposition 1937.

I originally thought this would have been taken in the mid 1920s, but of course it now turns out to be rather later. The amusing thing was that the image was originally uploaded reversed, and the word SIAM looked 100% like the word MAR (check teh image above and you'll still see how).

Out of the Archives: Operation H2O – Welcome to Water Wonderland! New York City was in the midst of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of its five boroughs’ unification as one city. In a joint exhibition, the Board of Water Supply and Department of Water Supply, Gas and Electricity showed off their phenomenal engineering work with a Hall of Water Wizardry and had some fun with whimsical dioramas and reenactments. This is the Rip Van Winkle Tavern, serving Catskill Cocktails, Delaware Delights, and Croton Highballs (AKA water!). According to signage, the fictional Van Winkle “haunts the Catskills in the very heart of the Water Supply Region.”

The Golden Anniversary Exposition featured many City agencies and organizations and was held at the Grand Central Palace, a building located on Park Avenue at 46th Street until 1964.
