Here's a scene that helps to explain why the U.S. Congress has trouble steering in any direction. This Cadillac, bearing a California license plate and a dashboard pass for the 112th Congress, was left hanging near the Maryland/District of Columbia boundary. It had been driven over a sidewalk and the edge of a sunken parking lot for GEICO's office building. With back wheels in the air, the car required a tow truck to get back to the road. Fortunately, the mishap was on a Sunday, when the lot was nearly empty. No one hurt, apparently.

Martha, Direct Relief's Domestic Program Officer, explains oral hygiene to children receiving free dental work at a free clinic visit in Santa Maria CA.

About the Healthy Smiles Program

Since 1994, the Healthy Smiles by Direct Relief has provided free dental treatment to 1,800 low-income, uninsured school-age children with severe need. Sponsored by Healthy Smiles, one-day free clinics are hosted by local dentists and Healthy Start programs throughout Santa Barbara County.

This free-clinic event was hosted by Dr. Samuel Burg and was staffed by volunteer dentists and hygienists who provided dental care and education to over 60 children that day.

Receiving services are low-income, uninsured children identified by their schools as needing professional dental care that they would not have been able to receive without the program.

Additionally, children received Dental Packs – toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss – that were donated by multiple healthcare manufacturers to Direct Relief and packed by volunteers at Direct Relief. For some families, event the cost of a toothbrush is too much and children go without. These donated products ensure that children can continue the good oral hygiene practices they learn during their free clinic visitl.

Each year, Direct Relief distributes approximately 1,000 child dental kits and 3,400 family dental kits (each of which serves a family of five) with donated dental supplies, which Direct Relief then allocates to their local partner agencies. These agencies distribute the dental kits to the low-income children and families whom they already serve

No matter where I am or what I'm doing, I have this constant need to photograph it. I am forever looking at everything around me as if there was a permanent viewfinder attached to my eyes. And I don't ever want to go back to walking around blindly not really seeing. Every and any thing...

I guess when it comes to my passion for photography and for a lack of a better phrase (or image, hehe) to explain that, let me just say...

I don't want to get caught with me proverbial pants down without my camera.

WHAT's an ADDA DADA XMESS without an ADDA DADA XMESS STORY or two?

Took the bus to Christmas Midnight Mass (not to be confused with the San Francisco's drag queen PEACHES CHRIST who hosts wild movies at her event-MIDNIGHT MASS). Overheard one passenger coldly explain to his friend, " It wouldn't be called MIDNIGHT MASS if it didn't START at MIDNIGHT!"

Humm, wondering if those two were going to continue their 'bitch fight' in the church like two queens of several Christmas' past. Apparently, it was not going to be a mary xmess afterall and all the while during mass and the chorus a singing, these two queens were having a push-me, pull-you XMESS arguement. Needless to say, they didn't last the whole service and, no, the pastor did not toss them out!

This year Pastor Green refrenced all those in loving partnerships! Well, it IS San Francisco afterall. Quite progressive. Humm, maybe a little too progressive for he stumbled over a passage about the Christ child and "Her ..err..His birth..."

Speaking of hymns, in the song, "Oh little town of Bethlehem" there's a phrase, "the cattle were lowing.." OK, that sounds so much more musical than, "the cowing were mooing.." and woke the little baby Jesus!

How could He sleep with the bright, shinning star, all the harking angels, shepards and their flock, and, the three wise men bearing gifts..."gold, myrrh, and Frank, for instance" as my then 4-year-old neice proudly exclaimed.

Yes, even though today, Christmas Day, the city proclaimed it a "Spare the Air Day", which means no fireplaces a burning on Christmas day. Still the church was filled with the sweet smelling, smokey "Frank, for instance". Guess, the restrictions do NOT apply to churches!

Which brings us to a XMESS past story of a Catholic wake ADDA attended years ago with his non-religious, tres-gay pals. Service went on a little longer than planned and his friends got a little figety &, well, bored. That all took a turn when the priest in his priestly attire, coronet and all, along with his entourage of choir boys went down the aisle, all the while swinging his smoking "Frank, for instance". My pal, Bill, turned to me and said, " Love her dress but her purse is on fire!"

If that didnot liven up a wake, nothing will. Ah yes, nothing like a gay Xmess, even when its not trying to be gay. Such as Christmas pagentry was acutely observed one year by my then 6-year-old nephew, who was also SO bored , not with a wake, but by the ballet dancing and prancing of the NUTCRACKER BALLET. Afterwards, he turned to ADDA and said, "You know those boys in tights are just dying to wear the tutus!"

Too, too true!

So, for this too too cold Christmas, remember:

No matter how much of a cold, stormy, snowy, white Christmas it is outside, let the sunshine and warmth of the Christmas spirit be inside your heart.

HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A WONDERFUL 2010

Un sucio cuento de hadas- the killers.

A patrolman explains his motorcycle to a curious onlooker during an educational fair at the Brentwood Mall in the 1960s. Formed in 1958, the Department of Highways Traffic Patrol was responsible for traffic control on five major lower mainland bridges – First Narrows (Lions Gate), Second Narrows (Ironworkers Memorial), Oak Street Bridge, George Massey Tunnel, Port Mann Bridge and all their approaches.

During the 1950s, British Columbia was undergoing an incredible post war boom. New highways infrastructure projects (bridges and freeways) were being built at a rapid pace, automobiles were everywhere, and cell phones and the internet were light years away. Motorists often needed help at the roadside and the Department of Highways Traffic Patrol was there to help.

''Well the farm I lived on was only a small holding, so mainly cows and chickens, we had no pigs or horses. I liked it there helping with milking and collecting eggs in the morning'' Sparrow explained

'''So do you miss the farm ?'' Ruby wondered

''Yes I do, but when my daddy left us it was too much for my mum and I so we sold up and me mum said it was best to come to London so I could get good schooling. I like it here too because I met you and your sisters and crazy cousin and back in Devon there was no next door for a couple of miles so I did get lonely'' Sparrow replied honestly.

A psychiatrist sheds light on the thinking behind the need for absolute power. It is the same psychology embodied by Darth Vadar and handily explained, in the final episode of the Star Wars epic, as his fear of the death of his beloved which spurs him to control everything rather than allow uncertainty into his life or let the force take care of things.

This author confirms that fear of death is the underlying psychology of superpower syndrome, but he also offers quite a bit more on the subject that I found helpful. And that was chiefly in his analysis of apocalyptic thinking and how it ties into the tendency, especially in western mythology, to think in terms of good and evil and eradicating the latter. His inclusion of Japanese apocalyptic thinking post-Hiroshima allows him to extend this dualistic story to the East, but he is chiefly focusing on how this plays out in Christian and Islamic mythology. It is a story of purification through destruction especially by fire, but also includes the purification of the race as with the Nazi agenda and other forms of purification either/or thinking. He claims that all religions have this story, but he does not address the religions that embody the yin and yang mix, and the teachings on how to live with ambiguity. (It may be that Western psychology itself is a need to alleviate ambiguity.)

He addresses how apocalyptic technology—giving humans the ability to annihilate the planet—has brought this internal story to planet threatening levels particularly the way the Bush administration has played it out by embracing preemptive war. This change is what makes superpower syndrome so dangerous and has alarmed enough writers to take it on in various books. Yes! magazine did a recent cover story on how to step down from the superpower agenda and join the community of nations through diplomacy. These discussions all mention how the desire to control in the name of absolute security will ultimately lead to the collapse of said superpower, mainly because you can never control it all and the effort to do so will bankrupt us and rob us of domestic infrastructure maintenance.

He gives a blow-by-blow account of what happened on a psychological level to Americans in light of the apocalyptic imagery provided by the 9/11 events. This was helpful as I did not live any of the stages of response he describes as part of being a survivor of a traumatic event. This includes death anxiety, survivor guilt, psychic numbing, suspiciousness, and the resulting search for meaning in this ordeal. (In the Tsunami, it was the Westerners who were focused on "why me, why us, why now" while the Thais were like "shit happens" and how do we make sure the dead don't come back to haunt us. Note: there were absolutely no ghost stories to contend with post 9/11; Karen Kingston, fung shui guru from England, says that those who died in the towers died very clean deaths so maybe that's why. And maybe fire is purifying after all.)

As is the tendency of psychiatrists, this author has taken the patients story at face value and analyses it accordingly without questioning that perhaps the patient's story is in itself pathological. He does not consider that Osama bin Laden may have had nothing to do with 9/11 per the analysis of the Osama video claiming the 9/11 deed, having now been shown to be a fake. What then would be the psychological underpinnings of that fabrication? This would have been a much more interesting story if he had brought in the need for American apocalyptic storytelling to invent al Qaeda as the enemy as reported by the BBC documentary The Power of Nightmares. More interesting still, if he had analyzed the Bush administration in light of MIHOP or LIHOP theories (Made It Happen On Purpose or Let It Happen On Purpose). I would have been interested in what goes on in the minds of leaders who kill their own people to create false flag events. He did not even analyse the psychological need for survivors to invent conspiracy theories. I had to refer to Wickipedia re: 9/11 to assure myself that all facets of reality were still being addressed by the democracy of content providers. It is possible that the inability of psychiatrists to consider more than one story is part of the dualistic, black and white apocalyptic think mode that he is warning us against.

Though the book annoyed me on these many levels, I found it helpful in showing me how my own recent thoughts of economic collapse in the US was a version of apocalyptic thinking. And having recently learned that it took Rome 300 years to fall and the Mayans who did it quick, a 100 years, I feel much more relaxed about it now. Even though we are headed for deep economic doo doo with oil prices spiked again, it will still take a while for societal collapse. And with nothing to do people will have more time to think about things.

By JAKE RUSSELL of the Jacksonville Journal Courier

Cannon fire interrupted the narrator as he explained the Battle of Newton’s Station to an audience lined along the Community Park field.

Suddenly, confederate soldier re-enactors rushed hay bales and barrels to the field for cover as union soldiers marched in. Rifles fired, cannons roared and the Gen. Benjamin Grierson Days Civil War re-enactment played out.

After 17 years, the props were a way to breathe new life into the re-enactments, said Erik Hack, a Gen. Benjamin Grierson Days committee member. Re-enactors had objectives and the props helped to stagger the battle and delay action.

All this was only a fraction of the new life breathed into Gen. Benjamin Grierson Days this year.

After floodwaters forced its cancellation last year, the two-day event came back with a renewed energy — new World War I and World War II skirmishes as well as the Veterans Remembered Timeline exhibits that were supposed to debut last year.

For Hack, it’s a chance to relive the camaraderie felt among fellow soldiers and also to honor and remember veterans.

“When somebody comes back from a combat situation, they’re changed,” he said. “We honor our vets and this is a safe way to remember the past.”

Christian Jebb portrayed David Dalton, a young Confederate soldier with the Eighth Arkansas.

Jebb was born into re-enacting, following his brother’s and father’s footsteps.

“It’s a brotherhood really,” he said. “You can’t find anything better than a fellow re-enacting brother. You find out how many cool jackets the Confederate side had and then you find out how hot the wool was. It’s pretty toasty.”

Re-enacting goes beyond a love of history, though.

“We’ve made it our lives, in a way,” he said. “I love history because of the common soldier. It’s scary to think of how many thousands of soldiers aren’t remembered.”

The Civil War re-enactment went as it does usually — re-enactors gathered for an officer’s call in the morning and came up with a battle plan. The battle plan changed three or four times through the morning until it had changed completely about 30 minutes before battle time, said Jon Cook, who portrayed a soldier with the 12th Illinois Calvary. Of course, the general plan stays in place for safety reasons.

Cook also portrayed a German soldier in the World War II skirmish, which caught a bit of the early afternoon rains that swept through the region.

His rifle malfunctioned in the skirmish so he took a hit and died right off the bat. When he fell on his side, his exposed ear filled with water.

“The things you do just to look dead,” he joked, explaining how his first re-enactment, he took a hit and fell on his back, arms spread out directly under the sun’s fierce beams. “I’ll never do that again.”

The rain did little to deter the crowd.

Cook’s been involved in Civil War re-enactments for about 20 years. His first time was during the first Gen. Benjamin Grierson Days event when his high school friend, Jim Phillips, recruited him.

Phillips had been trying to get Cook to re-enact since high school, so Cook gave it a chance. He went through safety checks until it came time for battle. Then he marched single-file between cannons until he was given the order “Double time!” at which point he ran.

Past the safety line — about 50 feet — Phillips gave the order, “Belly down!”

“So we all went belly down, the cannons go off, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and I was hooked,” Cook said.

He was so hooked, in fact, that he took an entire paycheck and spent it on his first uniform. Since then, he’s spent about $6,000 in warfare paraphernalia, he said.

“I’ve always been interested in the history of the warfare of America,” he said. “It’s our heritage. For what all these men have given, they’ve all given their freedom and lives for us to have the freedom to be able to do things like this. I feel like if we don’t show the youth what happens in war, we’re doomed to repeat it.”

That’s what Gen. Benjamin Grierson Days is all about — remembering and honoring veterans.

For example, the highlight of the day for Hack was the opportunity to give a World War II veteran a ride in a deuce and a half vehicle.

“We made his day and that made the weekend worth it,” he said.
