Main story

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

３ 奇想天外。作者の前後のアルバムから推測できない驚きが見える。
４ 詩。楽曲。プロデュース。アルバム全体のコンセプトが統一されている。
５ 透明感があると個人的には惹かれる。

Main story

she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。

Over the years I have taken close to 25,000 photos of my feminine persona. If you consider that I have posted about 3,400 here, that is less than 15% of all the photos I have in my library. Cristy is quite photogenic and 99% of the photos I take are good enough for posting so, how do I select which ones to post? Simple, I select the ones I like based on what I consider acceptable feminine deportment and appearance.
Since the beginning, my intention has been to share my feminine illusion efforts with likeminded people; not to get comments but rather to contribute to set a standard of tasteful and respectful emulation. Poise, attitude, choice of clothes and accessories, are among the factors I take into consideration. My inspiration comes from every single woman that I see and admire for her presentation and deportment. For me it is not a fetish for any item, but rather a representation of how women, my age, currently present. For instance, I don’t wear nylons because women do not wear them anymore and not because I don’t like them.
Fashion is important to me, but I select my clothes based on what I like and consider that would look good on me while reinforcing my feminine illusion. I wear mostly French manicure on my fingernails and toenails because that is what I like. You will never catch me wearing any unusual or trendy nail color or ornament, just because it is in fashion. A woman who is confident in herself wears what she likes and not what a trend sets, or others suggest. That is the kind of woman that I’d like to think I represent. I post old photos along with more current ones because it is not about how I look or what I wear today; it is about the art of feminine illusion regardless of time, fashion or whether it is the first or the Nth photo in that outfit and location.
After explaining my approach, I hope that when you look at my photos, you can see beyond what I am wearing and appreciate or criticize how I am wearing it, and how I measure in performing the feminine role based on that approach. Thanks to my approach, I have always received respectful comments and, over the years, l have deleted very few of them and have had to block less than a handful of people. I read and appreciate every single comment and even more so when they address what I had in mind when posting the photo. However, you should not feel obliged to comment unless you really feel like it and believe that you got something positive, or negative, from the photo, the title, or the text that goes with it.
From now on I will try to share why I choose the photo I am posting and will start with this one.
This photo is the first I will share of a long series of photos taken before and after my first ever religious service as Cristy (more about that in the future). In general, I’d like to think that my choice of clothes was appropriate for the occasion and that I was able to blend in, although I realized that I was a bit overdressed. A very feminine fit and flare dress with colorful flower print, by Maggie London, was, in my opinion, quite suitable, as were the Kate Spade flats that completed the look for Church. Nothing flashy or revealing here, as it should be. This dress would look great with a pair of heels too but would not be appropriate for attending Catholic Mass. For the pose I tried to be as demure as possible with my hands resting on my lap and my legs crossed in a very feminine manner with my feet pointing down (something that I find hard to do because my articulations are quite rigid).

Postura, actitud, elección de ropa y accesorios, son, entre otros, los factores que tomo en consideración. Mi inspiración viene de cada mujer que veo y admiro por su presentación y desenvolvimiento. Para mi no se trata de un fetichismo por algún tipo de prenda, sino que de una representación de cómo una mujer, de mi edad, luce en estos tiempos. Por ejemplo, no uso medias porque las mujeres ya no las usan y no porque no me guste usarlas.
La moda es importante para mí, pero elijo la ropa con base a lo que me gusta y considero que se vería bien en mí y que contribuya a reforzar la ilusión femenina. Por lo general uso esmalte de uñas en estilo francés porque es lo que me gusta. Jamás verán mis uñas pintadas don los colores drásticos que están de moda, con distintos adornos y colores en cada uña, solo porque está de moda. Una mujer segura de sí misma se viste como ella quiere y no como lo dicta la moda o le sugieren otras personas. Este es el tipo de mujer que quisiera pensar que represento. Subo fotos viejas junto con recientes porque no se trata de compartir cómo luzco hoy o qué llevo puesto, sino que se trata de emulación femenina sin importar la fecha, la moda o si es la primera o enésima foto con esa ropa y en ese lugar.
Luego de exponerles mi enfoque, espero que al ver mis fotos puedan ver más allá de lo que llevo puesto y aprecien o critiquen la manera en que lo llevo puesto y que tan bien logro mi objetivo en desempeñar el rol femenino, con base a este enfoque. Gracias a este enfoque, siempre he recibido comentarios respetuosos y, a través de los años, he tenido que borrar muy pocos y he bloqueado a menos de 5 personas. He leído y apreciado cada comentario recibido y más aún cuando se relacionan con lo que tenía en mente al compartir la foto. Sin embargo, no tienen por qué sentir el compromiso de comentar a no ser que realmente piensen que obtuvieron algo positivo, o negativo, de la foto, del título o del texto que la acompaña.

Esta foto es la primera que compartiré de muchas que me tomaron antes y después de mi primer servicio religioso como Cristy (y ales contaré más en el futuro). En general, quisiera pensar que mi elección de ropa fue adecuado para la ocasión y que pude integrarme al entorno. El vestido muy femenino, ceñido arriba, falda amplia y estampado floral (Maggie London) era muy adecuado en mi opinión, así como las zapatillas sin tacón de Kate Spade que completaban el look para asistir a la iglesia. Nada llamativo o revelador, como debe de ser. Este vestido se vería muy bien con tacones pero no habría sido apropiado para asistir a la misa Católica. En cuanto a la pose, intenté lucir relajada con mis manos sobre el regazo las piernas cruzadas en forma femenina y sencilla, mientras intento apuntar mis pies hacia abajo (algo que me cuesta mucho porque mis articulaciones son muy rígidas)

I think he called me a stuck-up prat as I left and returned to what I was doing.

Another shot from the LSE Library in London. Note that this is not open to the public. I emailed them in advance for permission. It is necessary to explain the use of the pictures which are to be personal use only and in particular no commercial use is allowed and no pictures of Students without their permission as they have had complaints. Best time when there are less students around is mornings or out of term time. I would suggest allowing 4 working days for a decision.
This redesign of the building was by the Architects Norman Fosters and was opened in 2001. I thought that was a suitable date for the opening considering that the scene could have been out of the film.
The picture was taken handheld with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20mm lens at 10 mm. A single image edited in RAW. A high ISO was needed to get a fast enough shutter speed producing Noise which I removed with Topaz DeNoise. Topaz Clarity was also used. There being a lot of lights I decided to make them a feature using another Topaz filter, Topaz Star Effects. This creates a star out of any bright light. I used this on a duplicate layer with a layer mask to confine the effect only to the lights I wanted it for.

They say long stretches at sea can make you see things where things might not necessarily be and that might just be the case with this image. Let me explain…
As I mentioned before in this post, the Antarctica trip was a photographic adventure lead by David duChemin and part of this adventure were image reviews run every evening in the boat library, where the 6 of us with gather around a bottle of Argentinian red wine and discuss an image from each of us. When my turn came after the camping night we just had the day before, I presented this image thinking of it as a serene long-exposure photograph, shot in the late (or early depending on how you’re counting) night Antarctic light.
Little did I know that this would generate a bit of a debate between David and Sam, with both of them liking the image, but for slightly different reasons. David saw in this a fight between the chaotic part on the left of the photograph (which he called at some point “the claw”) and the quiet , floating iceberg on the left, while Sam just saw the entire image as a very peaceful scene. I still don’t know who was right or wrong and the more I think about it, the more I realize that they were both right. Because what I want to do with my photographs is to generate some sort of emotional reaction from the viewers and that response might not always be the same.
We all interpret things in different ways and that’s what makes this so much fun. It’s just like the song said: “If everybody looked the same, we would all get tired of each other”.

So the saga - we are three people needing the use of one car. The owner of said car (me) is short and getting shorter every year. The other principal driver is short-ish but not that short. The other thing you need to know is that my beloved Honda Fit is older, is a stick shift and I adore it
So when the other principal driver uses said vehicle, she adjusts the seat and mirrors to work for her. She does try to return things back but sometimes she’s *way* off - the seat back so far I can’t reach the clutch without a stretching exercise that would please my physical therapist’s heart. And sometimes the seat is so far forward that you’d have to be a munchkin or a five year old to even get into the car.
In an effort to be helpful and solution-based, I took a trusty silver Sharpie marker out and marked where I thought the optimal seating position might be for me. Although it’s not perfect, it seems to be about right. Of course I plumb forgot to tell the other principal driver that I’d created this helpful mark, but I finally did think to send her a text showing it yesterday.
So does anybody know of a reliable good used not too old Toyota Corolla for sale that’s been well-maintained, is an automatic, has got low-ish mileage and has been carefully driven by, say, a little old lady only to church/temple/mosque on Sundays/Saturdays or bingo or shopping? We’re in the market!!

By the time Maurice and Bentley arrived, the elves had emptied the warehouse of all the toys and began loading up Santa’s sleigh. There were still quite a number to get squeezed on board, but knowing Santa, he would figure out a way. “I have already sent one load by special carriers to certain brown boxes in neighborhoods where I can get the other packages. That way, I won’t have to carry all the presents in one trip.”
Maurice reported for duty, and the first thing that Mrs. Claus told him to do was to feed Olive. “Olive?” Maurice asked. “Since when did Olive join the other reindeers?”
“Oh, that’s easy to explain,” Mrs. Claus went on. “You know the original eight reindeer, right?”
“Dasher and Dancer, Comet and Cupid, Donner and Blitzen, Prancer and Vixen, right?” Maurice remembered them, even if it wasn’t in the same listing in the poem.
“And then you have to add Rudolf, the red-nosed reindeer,” Mrs. Claus added.
“Oh, yes, I remember how he guided Santa with his red nose on that very foggy Christmas Eve.” Maurice was starting to wonder just when Olive joined this band of reindeer.
“Olive came the same time Rudolf did,” she went on to explain, “however, she wasn’t the kindest at first.”
“What do you mean?” Maurice asked as he held another carrot for Olive to eat.
“It’s in the song, remember?”
Maurice was puzzled at first until Mrs. Claus started to sing.
“Olive, the other reindeer, used to laugh and call him names.”
Maurice groaned.
“But immediately after hearing about this matter, Santa made all the reindeer go through personal sensitivity training to learn how to accept others and work as a team. It was effective, for after three weeks, all the reindeer acted as one team, helping each other and encouraging each other on those long trips.” Mrs. Claus sounded pleased on the success of the training for the reindeer. “We also tried to do that with the elves, but it seems we have to retrain them every year. But you seem to have learned your lessons.”
“Thank you,” Maurice said humbly. He finished offering Olive her carrots and assisted Santa in loading extra carrots in the large compartment under the sleigh.
“It looks like we’re ready to go. One more night of rest, then we hitch up the team, give the whistle command, and off to fill stockings and place presents under all those trees. until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

あらすじ
大学を目指している北見ケイは、SNS上で、6歳年上のイベントコンパニオン、上村香織に出会う。
上京してきた香織の夢は、有名なアーティストの友達になるためだ。
そのためにはラジオ局のプロデューサー、大沢亮の存在が必要だった。
大沢は、ラジオの生放送中、香織へ語りかける。
「僕には妻子がある。しかし、僕は君に会いたいと思っている」
ケイの同級生で、彼を想っている三條里香は、香織の動向を探っていた。。。。。
本編
人が海へ向かう理由には、二つある。
ひとつは、波打ち際ではしゃぐ子供のように、今の瞬間の海の輝きを楽しむこと。
もうひとつは、その輝きを静かに見据えて、過ぎ去った日々を懐かしむ老人のように記憶の埃を払うこと。
二つは重なり合わないようではあるけれども、たったひとつの意味しか生まない。
再生だ。
明日っていう、曖昧な日を確実なものへと変えてゆくために、自分の存在に向き合う。
それが再生の意味だ。
十八歳だった僕には大切な人がいた。

I was brought up with that adage, but it was not correctly explained to me.
I was told that, "What you see wrong with others, is wrong about yourself." That's not entirely true, and it created a great deal of distress, because I wondered how bad I was since I saw other people as bad.
What the statement really means, is that there is a reason you see or feel things in others. For instance, if you see someone as unsafe, it means you know the difference between safety and danger. <-- that's the reflection.
If you see someone as insincere, it means the reflection is that you can sense insincerity because you are, in fact, sincere.
Had I understood this growing up, I would not have developed the paranoia I have now. I thought that the reason I didn't trust people was because I was untrustworthy, not because I knew the difference between the truth and a lie.

What is selfish behavior? Selfishness is defined as the tendency to act in one's own interests without regard for the impact on others. New research shows that a person’s own behavior is the primary driver of how they treat others during brief, zero-sum-game competitions.
Generous people tend to reward generous behavior and selfish individuals often punish generosity and reward selfishness – even when it costs them personally. The study found that an individual’s own generous or selfish deeds carry more weight than the attitudes and behaviors of others.
The findings are reported in the journal Cognitive Science.
Previous research into this arena of human behavior suggested that social norms are the primary factor guiding a person’s decision-making in competitive scenarios, said Paul Bogdan, a PhD candidate at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign who led the research in the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology with U. of I. psychology professors Florin Dolcos and Sanda Dolcos.
“The prevailing view before this study was that individuals form expectations based on what they view as typical. If everyone around me is selfish, then I’m going to learn to accept selfishness and behave accordingly,” Bogdan said. “But we show that your judgments of other people’s behavior really depend on how you behave yourself.”
To test the factors that guide expectations and drive behavior, the researchers conducted a series of experiments involving the Ultimatum Game, which captures how an individual responds to offers from another player proposing to split a pot of money with them. The game requires the proposer to suggest how much each person receives of a $10 pot. The receiver must decide whether to agree to that split or reject it. If the offer is rejected, neither participant receives any money. Rejection can be seen as a form of punishment, even though it costs both players, the researchers said.
Some people tend to be generous – or at least fair – when offering another person a portion of a $10 reward. Others try to take as much of the money as they can, offering lopsided splits that benefit themselves at the expense of their competitors.
When on the receiving end of an offer, generous people tend to accept only generous offers, while selfish people are happy with selfish offers – even though the other player’s selfishness hurts them financially, the researchers found. Having the players switch between receiving and proposing offers allowed the team to explore the relationship between a player’s selfish or generous behavior and their evaluation of other players’ offers.
Further experiments showed that generous and selfish individuals tend to trust others who behave as they themselves do, regardless of the economic outcome.

“Participants will gain more money with a generous person. But a selfish person will prefer to play with someone who behaves as they do,” Bogdan said. “People really like others who are similar to themselves – to a shocking degree.”
The team also evaluated data from a previous cross-cultural study that found that individuals sometimes punish others for their selfishness or for their generosity in a collaborative game involving resource sharing. They found that, when deciding whether and how much to punish others, participants were guided primarily by their own behavior and less by the pressure to conform. People who behaved generously tended to punish selfishness and people who put their own welfare first were much more likely to punish generosity – even in situations where one approach was more common than the other.
Cultural norms toward self-interest or generosity do influence people, as other studies have found, Florin Dolcos said. “But we are not only observers. This study is showing that we filter information about the world through our own view.”
Those individuals whose behavior switched from generous to selfish over time were more likely to punish generosity and reward selfishness – but only after their own behavior changed, the team found.
This helps explain the phenomenon of social alignment, for better and for worse, Florin Dolcos said.
“You may have groups of selfish people who are more accepting of other selfish people, and in order to be part of that group, newcomers might display the same behavior,” he said.
Ultimately, the study finds that a person’s own generous or selfish nature drives their behavior in many arenas of life, Sanda Dolcos said.
“This is not just about decision-making,” she said. “It has practical relevance to many types of social interactions and social evaluations.”

Kristin Dombek’s The Selfishness of Others begins by introducing three characters. There’s Allison, one of the stars of the MTV reality show My Super Sweet 16. (For her birthday parade, she had an entire block of Atlanta shut down, right in front of a hospital: “They can just go around,” she said.) Next is Tucker Max, the celebrity whose books and blog posts about “getting wasted and sportfucking” made him a hero among pickup artists and men’s rights activists. And then there’s Anders Breivik, who in 2011 killed eight people with a car bomb in Oslo, Norway. After that he proceeded to a summer camp, where he shot and killed 69 more. He would later claim that the massacres were a publicity stunt to promote his 1,500-page manifesto deriding women and Muslims, and featuring pictures of him smiling in Knights Templar costumes.
If Breivik seems like an outlier—if the comparison with two relatively harmless figures strikes you as inappropriate—this is intentional. The millennial girl, the bad boyfriend and the murderer: these examples show the range of our obsession with narcissism, a condition we hear more and more about these days. As I write this, half the country is still reeling from the election of a self-absorbed millionaire (or billionaire, if you believe his boasts) whom numerous psychologists have publicly diagnosed as a narcissist, while an online petition calling for the Republican Party to #DiagnoseTrump has been signed by more than thirty-four thousand people.

Dombek begins her own discussion on more personal ground, in the depths of what she calls the “narcisphere.” This is her name for the metastasizing cluster of blogs, vlogs, quizzes and support communities where self-described victims gather to vent and to discuss the behaviors of their personal “narcs.” One website, the Web of Narcissism, quotes Dracula and employs gothic castle imagery; its members, who call themselves “keyboard faeries,” trade recommendations for media about sociopaths and vampires, enacting narc victimhood as a kind of underground subculture. There are many gurus and experts to choose from in the narcisphere, but their advice converges on one remedy. If you find yourself in a relationship with a narcissist—and you’ll know because they withhold care and attention, or do not seem to love you with the exclusivity you deserve—then the only solution is to cut your losses and get out. The narcissist can’t love you, and trying to change them is hopeless.

What’s tempting about this “narciscript,” as Dombek calls it, is that it reduces a complicated situation (e.g. the average relationship) to a heavily weighted binary: Do I continue to extend an imprudent empathy, or do I go cold, the way the other person already has, in the interest of self-preservation? Clearly the latter course is the more “reasonable” one, but the moment I take it—go cold, withdraw, run—is the moment I can no longer safely distinguish my own behavior from the narcissist’s. “The script confirms itself,” Dombek writes, “and the diagnosis and the treatment confound the evidence, until it gets harder and harder” to tell whether the word “narcissism” describes anything at all. This is why, although The Selfishness of Others seems to promise an investigation of whether the “narcissism epidemic” (as it’s been called) is real, the book’s main interest derives from Dombek’s posing of another question, which may shed new light on our urge to #DiagnoseTrump: What’s at stake for us in believing it’s real?
Dombek spent the first part of her life in Philadelphia, where she was homeschooled by her parents, affable-sounding Jesus freaks she has described as “long-haired, corduroy-bell-bottom-wearing, antiauthoritarian biblical literalists.” When she was nine her father became sick with a host of terminal illnesses and the family relocated to a farm in Indiana, where they lived with a lot of animals: according to one (maybe exaggerated) list there were “not only about twenty cats and a dog but a half-dozen roving demented geese and two ornery pebble-shit-spewing goats and a couple dozen hysterical hens and a tyrannical rooster named Sam.” After high school Dombek attended Calvin College, a Christian Reformed (Calvinist) school in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She struggled to fit in with her classmates, who had all grown up in suburban neighborhoods.
As a freshman, Dombek became politically active in the fight against abortion—a practice she firmly believed, along with her parents and many of her friends, was not only murder but “a first step toward state-run infanticide and euthanasia.” At church, she and her friends watched films of months-old fetuses writhing in pain as machines snapped them apart piece by piece. Dombek would describe the anguish of those images in “The Two Cultures of Life,” her first article for n+1. The essay, which questions the left-right polarization of the abortion issue, contains many of the hallmarks of Dombek’s later work, including her attempt to bypass either-or distinctions by staging an argument on the page, and her insistence on directing empathy toward those viewed as incapable of returning it: the fetus, the animal, the murderer.
The year after she participated in an anti-abortion march in Washington, Dombek picked up smoking, started wearing flannel shirts and declared herself a Marxist. But her belief in the importance of empathizing across ideological and (sometimes) ontological boundaries seems to have persisted, along with her certainty that, as she writes in “Two Cultures,” “if it looks like violence, it is.” Studying literature at NYU after college, she emphasized persuading secular people to be “more empathetic toward fundamentalists, even those who conduct or support great atrocities.”
Her dissertation, “Shopping for the End of the World,” drew on the ideas of the French philosopher and literary theorist René Girard, who was interested in the ways that violence emerged within social groups. We tend to believe that violence happens when people don’t understand or empathize with one another, but Girard argued, first in Deceit, Desire and the Novel (1961) and later in Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World (1978), that violence springs just as much from our similarities. We think we desire things and people for their particular qualities but, according to Girard, this is an illusion; all desire is in fact an anticipatory mirroring of the desires of those closest to us. When two people reach for the same thing at once, as they inevitably will, not only are they hurled into conflict over that thing; they are also each confronted with disturbing evidence that their deepest self is little more than a bundle of imitations. Desperate to destroy the bearer of such news, they lash out. And because violence, too, is mimetic, it spreads through the community in a destructive, destabilizing feedback loop.
According to Girard, archaic societies developed a stopgap solution to these epidemics of violence: ritual sacrifice. (All archaic societies, apparently: Girard, who based his theory of sacrifice on readings of ancient myth rather than direct anthropological research, had a tendency to overgeneralize.) The group would select a scapegoat, and the selection itself was a significant decision. Ideally, this being—whether human or some other animal—would be enough like the sacrificers themselves that destroying or exiling it would satisfy the sacrificer’s need to banish what they hated. At the same time, the scapegoat needed to seem, or be made to seem, inhuman enough that everyone could safely assume its suffering didn’t count. This is how Dombek’s interest in empathy led her to the narcissist—the being our society often claims is too inhuman to truly suffer.

The first people labeled as narcissists, writes Dombek, were almost exclusively homosexuals and women—and for Freud, who popularized the label, almost all homosexuals and women were narcissists. Beautiful women, whom Freud compared to children and “certain animals which seem not to concern themselves about us,” seemed to him particularly resistant to therapeutic practice. To his mind, the abnormal resistance of these women to transference—love, basically—appeared to be a form of regression. Normal, healthy people start their lives in a similar state of selfish inaccessibility, he reasoned, but eventually they develop the capacity for empathy and love. The narcissist, for Freud, was the person who maintained or returned to this self-sufficiency.
Dombek’s criticism of the Freudian interpretation of narcissism draws from another work by Girard. In “Narcissism: The Freudian Myth Demystified by Proust,” Girard compared famous passages from Proust about desire with Freud’s vaguely moralistic theorizing about his desirable patients. The similarities he found were remarkable. Both writers ascribed to their subjects an inhuman autonomy, compared them with children and animals (specifically birds: large birds of prey in Freud’s case, seagulls in Proust’s) and marveled at their indifference to those around them. The difference was that Proust didn’t present his descriptions as true. “There is no such thing as a ‘real,’ objective narcissism for Proust,” Girard writes. It’s just less painful, when someone doesn’t feel about us like we feel about them, to believe that they’re incapable of feeling. What looks to us like someone else’s arrogance, according to this line of thinking, is actually our own inverted neediness.
Are these insights about scapegoating and the “narcissistic illusion” (as Girard called it) helpful for understanding today’s “narcissism epidemic”? The claims that narcissism is becoming pathological on the level of the whole culture go back to at least the late Seventies, when Tom Wolfe’s “The Me Decade” (1976) made the cover of New York and Christopher Lasch’s The Culture of Narcissism (1979) became a national best seller. Despite Lasch’s scattershot approach—sections of The Culture of Narcissism are devoted to confessional writing, radical feminism and the use of AstroTurf in sports stadiums—his account of “the new narcissist” remained firmly rooted in psychoanalytic theory: specifically, Dombek notes, that of the analyst Otto Kernberg, who modified Freud’s theory by positing that the narcissist’s performance of self-sufficiency was part of a compensatory attempt to fill a vacuum of self-esteem.
Just as Lasch’s book was published, however, scientists began laying the tracks for the more clinical conception of the condition that prevails today. In 1979, two social psychologists developed the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI), a diagnostic tool that reduced Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) (enshrined in the DSM as a mental illness the next year) to a set of eight traits. The NPI is a forced-choice questionnaire, which means it tests NPD by asking subjects to select from a pair of statements—for example, “Sometimes I tell good stories” or “Everybody likes to hear my stories”—which it then correlates with clinical traits. The resulting numerical score tells you next to nothing about the individual test-taker, not even whether that person is a narcissist (as the test’s creators readily admitted). But it makes it much easier to generalize across large sample sizes.
In The Narcissism Epidemic (2009), for instance, social psychologists Jean Twenge and W. Keith Campbell reported that because millennials scored 30 percent higher on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory than ever before, they were likely the most self-involved generation in history. But according to Dombek, the study the book was based on actually only revealed that a “slight majority of students in 2006 answered, on average, one or two more questions in the narcissistic direction than did those in 1986.” Another caveat is that the people surveyed in Twenge and Campbell’s study were not just American college students, but specifically freshman psychology students, participating for course credit—an extremely common form of institutional bias which leads Dombek to wonder how much of popularly reported psychology research “would actually be more accurately framed as an understanding of what young psychology students think about themselves.”
The problem is not just that studies using this paradigm mask an absence of real knowledge, although this is a problem. More importantly, by presenting narcissism as a diagnosis with a firm empirical basis, journalists quoting social psychologists often make it seem like a condition someone—or a whole group of someones—just has. For researchers, this sort of shorthand isn’t unusual—it’s more or less how most sciences operate. But such research isn’t usually being cited to support sweeping claims about entire generations, nor to explain the behavior of our bad boyfriends, murderers and politicians.
The fact that, with narcissism in particular, such labeling has become so common, speaks in favor of Dombek’s suggestion that the narcissist occupies a special place in our social imagination. For Twenge and Campbell, millennials play the role of arch-villains in a story about our culture’s refusal to grow up. More recently, many of us have focused our attention on a villain who looks very different from a millennial, though we call him the same name we call them. Which makes one wonder what, in this case, is the underlying sameness that we’re hoping to purge.

It’s likely no coincidence that one of the terms commentators often used to describe the political divides of the 2016 presidential campaign—“echo chamber”—brings us back to the Narcissus myth. In the classic version told by Ovid, Echo is a girl who, cursed by Hera, can only speak by repeating what others say. In the forest she falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful Narcissus, but when she tries to embrace him he reacts fearfully, with angry words that she can only whisper back to him; then he abandons her in favor of his own reflection in a dark pool. In our modern rendition, the term “chamber” is supposed to suggest a technological component to the problem, but the basic story is the same. In it, the other side of whatever divide—political, ideological, demographic—is imagined as being trapped in the echo chamber of “fake news” and bias-confirming feeds, while “we” play the role of Echo. We want to communicate, but the only way our voices can carry across the divide is if we repeat exactly what the other side already believes.
Although the echo chamber presents itself as a tragic picture, Dombek can help us recognize its flattering features. We, the ones who bemoan being stuck in our chamber, desire earnestly to reach out to the other side. They, the narcissistic ones, refuse to leave their chamber and meet us halfway. Scapegoating has always been an effective political tactic, and it is one Trump used ably, if offensively, during his campaign. But if Dombek and Girard are right that narcissism functions today largely as a scapegoating technique—a way of justifying coldness, maybe even violence, toward the one we label the narcissist—then it is Trump himself who emerges as the ultimate scapegoat, precisely because of his refusal to even pretend to care what his adversaries think.
Other presidents, after they win, at least make a show of reaching out; our narcissist-in-chief just keeps insulting us. Apparently he’s seeing other people, or maybe he really does just look into his reflection on TV all day. In any case, a better pretext for our own unapologetic anger and hatred could hardly be imagined. Which is a relief, in a way: all that empathizing can be exhausting.
The problem is only that, as Girard believed, scapegoating could never truly end violence or hatred, because, in misidentifying its source, it leads us to think we’re outside the dynamics responsible for it. “The moment you begin to find that the other lacks empathy—when you find him inhuman,” Dombek writes, “is a moment when you can’t feel empathy, either.” We say, this is how things are, fair or not. Either they burn, or we do.

Overlooking the Firth of Forth.
Tantallon Castle is a large red sandstone ruin from the 1300s which overlooks the beautiful coastline near North Berwick in East Lothian. The castle is one of the oldest curtain-wall castles in Scotland and it is one of the top-rated tourist attractions in East Lothian.
Visitors to the coastal town of North Berwick can explore one of the finest medieval fortifications in Scotland by heading south along the coastline for 3 miles, where they’ll find Tantallon Castle.
While the castle is pretty much in ruin it is managed by Historic Environment Scotland (HES) who have installed walkways that allow visitors to explore the castle walls along with information panels that explain the castle’s fascinating history.
There are lots of reasons to visit Tantallon Castle, with the view from the top of the castle walls probably being the highlight but there are a couple of other points of interest that make it worth a visit.
First, it’s home to the very last fortified curtain wall that was constructed in Scotland, so if you’re a history buff that’s something you can cross off your list.

And second, a nearby sandstone outcrop has a section cut into it that forms the smallest harbour in Scotland, so if you like exploring unusual places then Tantallon Castle is definitely worth a visit.
The castle dominates the landscape for miles around this beautiful part of the East Lothian countryside and the sandstone walls of the 14th-century fortress have been fascinating visitors for most of the last century thanks to its cliff-top location which offers views across the Firth of Forth and Bass Rock.
The top of the curtain wall is a superb spot to watch the seabird colonies that call this part of East Lothian their home, and if you want to explore the coastline to see more wildlife it’s just a short walk to Seacliff beach which is known for its giant rock pools.

Things to do at Tantallon Castle
The castle itself is an amazing structure and both adults and children will enjoy roaming around its ruined walls and rooms.
The views from the top of the walls are amazing with the enormous Bass Rock in the near distance and the East Lothian countryside stretching away to the east and west, and there’s enough wildlife in the area that any nature-lover will be kept entertained for hours.
Looking in the opposite direction you can take in the sight of Berwick Law with its whalebone perched on the top, while to the east you can see Seacliff beach where you’ll discover the small harbour hidden amongst the rocks.
Heading down into the castle courtyard you can explore the ruins from ground level and photographers will no doubt enjoy snapping a few shots of the sandstone curtain wall that glows with the sun gleaming behind it.
If you head into the east tower you’ll find a replica of the gun that was used to defend the castle against James IV and James V (more photo opportunities), while children can happily go on a fact-finding quiz created by HES that’s guaranteed to keep them occupied for a good hour or two.

Heading back to the castle entrance you’ll find the information displays that will tell you all about the castle’s history under the stewardship of the Red Douglas’s while nearby you’ll find paths that will take you on a lovely walk down to Seacliff beach.
This is one of the best beaches in East Lothian due to the number of rock pools you’ll find in the sea-carved sandstone but it’s also worth visiting because the beach is beautifully clean and the sea is great for swimming in thanks to the protection it gets from the cliffs that enclose it on either side.
At one end of Seacliff beach you can look back to see Tantallon Castle looking absolutely magnificent against the skyline (wait for sunset – it’s an amazing view), while the other end hides the small harbour that was cut away using compressed air all the way back in 1890.
Because it’s partially hidden you’ll likely stumble across the harbour without even realising what it is, but while you’re there take a look back out towards the sea where you’ll glimpse an unusual stone beacon that marks the location of a huge partially submerged rock.
All-in-all, I can safely say a day spent at Tantallon Castle will surprise and please you in equal measure.

The history of Tantallon Castle
The castle was built in the mid-14th-century by the 1st Earl of Douglas after he became the leader of the Douglas clan and was principally designed to be a status symbol, although at this point in Scottish history the concept of curtain walls had already been superseded in favour of tower houses.
As such, Tantallon Castle was to be the last curtain-wall castle to be built in Scotland, and while only the landward section remains today, at one time the enormous stone wall enclosed the entire site.
The castle passed into the hands of the illegitimate son of the Earl of Douglas in the late 14th century and it was at this time that the Douglas clan divided into two factions, the Red Douglas’s and the Black Douglas’s, with the Red Douglas’s taking control of Tantallon.
While the two clans feuded for the next hundred years the castle became the main stronghold of the Red Douglas’s until a traitorous act by the 5th Earl handed it to James IV of Scotland.
Although previous earls had allied with the Royal House of Stuart, the 5th Earl struck a deal with Henry VII of England against James IV and in retaliation the Scottish king successfully besieged Tantallon Castle.

While the Red Douglas’s eventually found favour with the Scottish government it seems they had other intentions with England, and in 1525 with support from Henry VIII, the 6th Earl successfully took custody of the 16-year-old Scottish King James V.
However, the king managed to escape and several years later took revenge on the Earl with a massive bombardment of Tantallon Castle that lasted for a full 20 days. Although the king lifted the siege after being unable to bring down the curtain wall the Earl fled to England, leaving James V free to capture the castle.
The castle passed in and out of the hands of various Scottish nobles for another hundred years until its fate was sealed during the English civil war of 1650 when Oliver Cromwell’s forces laid siege and finally breached the castle’s defences.
After this defeat Tantallon was left in ruins, never to be inhabited again. Finally, in 1924 it was handed to the British government and today it’s held in the care of Historic Environment Scotland and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The castle is very interesting to explore and has lots of history to discover.
The views from the top of the castle walls are amazing so take your camera. If you’d like to see Bass Rock close-up take a visit to North Berwick to catch a cruise from the Scottish Seabird Centre.
The nearby beach is well worth exploring. Doubly so if you’ve got kids (or a dog).
Visiting tips
It’s not particularly well sign-posted. Best to use a sat-nav to find it.
The east of Scotland is chock-a-block full of impressive castles. One of my favourites is Craigmillar Castle which is located just a few miles outside of Edinburgh and is easy to visit from Tantallon.
If you’re in the area you might like to take a walk up nearby North Berwick Law which offers lovely views across the Firth of Forth.
Things to do near Tantallon Castle
Seacliff Beach. North Berwick EH39 5PP. 6-minute drive. A wide, golden sand beach that offers superb views of the North Sea and Tantallon Castle. A large area of raised rock bed create large rock pools when the tide retreats. The beach is part of the Seacliff Estate who provide a paid parking area.
The Scottish Seabird Centre. The Harbour, North Berwick EH39 4SS. 10-minute drive. An environmental visitor centre that aims to educate and entertain visitors with displays and exhibitions about Scotland’s coastal marine wildlife. The centre features a viewing platform that overlooks the Bass Rock and it is the departure point for pleasure cruises around the rock.
North Berwick Law. North Berwick EH39 5NX. 10-minute drive. A large volcanic plug that rises 187 metres above the coastal town of North Berwick. Berwick Law has well-trodden paths that allow relatively easy access to the whalebone sculpture at the top. The summit is famed for the stunning views across East Lothian and the Firth of Forth.
North Berwick. East Rd, North Berwick EH39 4LG. 9-minute drive. A very popular historic former fishing village that is now a tourist destination thanks to its golden beaches and proximity to the Scottish Seabird Centre and Bass Rock. The village high street includes a collection of gifts shops, restaurants and cafés.
Tyninghame Beach. Dunbar EH42 1XW. 14-minute drive. A very clean and less-visited sand beach that is separated from Seacliff beach by a lengthy section of shingle. There is a rough path that follows the coast south past Whitberry Point and St. Baldred’s Cradle local nature reserve. Tyninghame beach has a paid parking area.

I have to admit something, I dig my iPhone better than my Canon. Way easier to pack on the horse, not to mention takes no time to get it off my belt and click. The horse likes it better too, they don't have to wait so long for me to take a pic. They get impatient like kids. That would explain the lack of Canon pics in my files these days. I also get a great deal of amusement from short video clips too. I found out my dad doesn't like being in front of the cam, hmmmm, no need to wonder where i got that from. Ha! We had a bit of excitement right after this pic was taken. Sadie decided upon herself to go swimming on her own without me. It was hot! Pretty crazy for an Alberta Autumn. Well, good thing she has a set of lungs on her (for the first time i was grateful) I was able to locate her rather quickly being swept under by rapid currents. Nothing more scarier than trying to reach your dog cliff side, me hanging, barely being able to touch her panic strickened face. I never stripped so fast in my life (not even for the hottest guy) i went in frigid cold temps to save her life and i must of had a guardian angel looking over me. Don't bother scolding me about risking my life for my dog, I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. I heard enough from my Mom. My Dad knows better than to say much, besides, he's a man of few words. But obviously not few enough because he told my Mom on me. LOL
