The terraces were dug following the natural curves of the landscape. The thickness of the walls stores heat during the day and diffuses it at night. Thanks to this method it has been possible to obtain a different microclimate as one goes down and gets closer to the centre. An average temperature difference of 5°C was observed, whereas the difference is only 0.5°C over comparable height differences at the same location. Due to its sheltered position, each of the terraces represents approximately one thousand metres of altitude under normal growing conditions.

As I already explained in my previous image of similar title, this is what is going on in this Northern Paradise. We passed by watching in horror and pushing the accelerator to the very bottom to get away from this madness as fast as possible. ... Call me selfish, call me a friggin individualist, but I will NEVER stand in a line experiencing such places in a melee ;)

Needless probably to add that their two minibuses were almost blocking a very narrow road while about 500 metres further there was a parking lot! Gosh I hate this new photographic vandalism!

Addendum: I failed to explain earlier what I did here, but thought I would add a few late words. For any who are interested, I experimented with rotating the image multiple times and played around with blend modes in Photoshop to get this effect, which I rather like.

I am no fan of garden ornaments, but when the owner of this house invited me in to have a look at their latest addition, I could hardly refuse.

I was also glad I did. As she explained that it had been made from washed up driftwood found on the beaches. It makes it a far superior garden ornament.

This is the sunflower that’s been late for the summer.

Most days this week I’ve tried to go out to get a decent shot of this flower. But it’s either been wet, windy or wet and windy. This day it was windy, so rather than the usual wait patiently and wait for the wind to die down I thought I’d go for the a an let’s shoot anyway and see what turns up. Loads of blurred shots let me tell you! However there were just a few shots that were in somewhat in focus. This is one such shot.

Thanks for stopping

At this sight, the title of the book about the famous painter Giovanni Segantini, who lived here in the Engadin for many years, immediately came to mind. In this area at 1800 metres above sea level, the air is purer, the light is different, more intense, it's hard to explain. But I always experience an incredible feeling of happiness here...

This picture was taken on 3 February 2024, at the end of the day at Lake Sils. I had photographed on the frozen lake until I had practically no light left. A tripod would have been helpful... As I walked back to the village, I turned round one last time - and saw this view. Despite the darkness, I took a picture because it was the most beautiful I saw.

The weather looked threatening as we managed to leave the upper mountains just in time to get back to the car in Ortisei. While I explained the weather to the children, we safely waited out the storm in the car. An exciting day that was allowed to end excitingly.

God give me the strength to get through the next four years.

Where's the big steal now? Oh, I guess it was a free and fair election this time around. It's a miracle! I understand now. You scream cheater if you're losing. I'll explain that to a child the next time I'm playing Chutes and Ladders with them. What an inspiration our leader is.

For years I have been hoping for a better shot of a Yellow-rumped warbler other than seeing a yellow rump flying away from me or flitting from branch to branch and around the trunks of any birch he could find. The odd thing was that the closest I got to a male Yellow-rumped Warbler was a close relative (www.flickr.com/photos/ethanwinning/25924883922/), the Audubon Warbler. This is both and interesting and confusing bird which I'll explain in a minute.

So after years of trying and getting iffy shots of the YRW, I was walking home today and I spotted what I thought was a warbler in one of the six Coastal Redwoods that stand across the street from my home, and which I have seen every day for 44 years. I ran home, got my camera, and shot 90 images and here's the best of what I got, a male Yellow-rumped Warbler in early winter plumage.

Why is the species so confusing. Well, its range is ... all over the map, but that doesn't mean that a Myrtle Yellow-rumped Warbler is the same as a Western Yellow-rumped Warbler. I usually use four guidebooks and two apps when I have trouble with the information about a bird. Well, my six sources ALL conflict. All I know is that I'm in California and this is a YRW, and that's good enough for me until I can find a male in full breeding plumage.

These male birds in their wedding suits makes them quite clumsy flyers but nevertheless still attractive for some females.

And for the sake of honesty, the flying one is the same bird as the sitting one, which cannot be explained by quantum physics.

Drakaea is a genus of 10 species in the orchid family commonly known as hammer orchids. All ten species occur only in the south-west of Western Australia. Hammer orchids are characterised by an insectoid labellum that is attached to a narrow, hinged stem, which holds it aloft. The stem can hinge only backwards, where the broadly winged column carries the pollen and stigma. Each species of hammer orchid is pollinated by a specific species of thynnid wasp. There are at least 2000 species of thynnid wasps in Australia, although only around 600 have been named so far. Thynnid wasps are unusual in that the female is flightless and mating occurs when the male carries a female away to a source of food. The labellum of the orchid resembles a female thynnid wasp in shape, colour and scent. Insect pollination involving sexual attraction is common in orchids but the interaction between the male thynnid wasp and the hammer orchid is unique in that it involves the insect trying to fly away with a part of the flower. Watch a video of the action here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yLnKfhmUzg The anatomy of hammer orchids is explained here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drakaea#/media/File:Drakaea_labelle...

I'm not explaining it right, LOL. We went to a sculpture garden and this was just there ~ a mirror, on an easel, in the middle of the field. All we did was take pictures there ~ the concept wasn't ours.

For "uva uvam vivendo varia fit" -- ODC

"The Latin phrase, "uva uvam vivendo varia fit" that appears on the Hat Creek Cattle Company is a corruption of the latin phrase "uva uvam vivendo varia fit" from the scholia to Juvenal 2.81. It means, literally a grape changes color [i.e., ripens] when it sees [another] grape."

: the Blue Tit. Like all our garden birds, Blue Tits need to put down fat reserves to make it through the longer winter nights (when they obviously can’t feed). However, unlike a larger garden bird such as a Collared Dove, the Blue Tit is probably only able to put down enough fat in a day to make it through one single long and very cold night. This immediately explains why Blue Tits are so active on short and very cold winter days, as a) they have less hours to collect food – perhaps less than 7 hours in the depths of winter in the far north of the UK

I came across this impromptu street garden in the historic center of Forcalquier where most of the old stone houses are packed so closely together there is no room for a more traditional garden.

The photo was taken on 19th December, which might explain the presence of the Christmas decorations.

So every once in a while, I decide to gush out on people and bring the cringe, :D... so here's the holiday edition.

I have had a challenging year, in more aspects than one, yet I could always find my shoulder to cry on and the hand to rely on.

I do not take that lightly.

To the people I hold dearest to me, my family and friends in this virtual world and the other 'not so virtual' one, that most of you have crossed to... I am thankful for you all.

Your presence makes a huge difference every single day. Just knowing that you all keep me in your thoughts, mean more than you'll ever know.

You are all my gifts this year, and ye.. I know it's weird, since I don't usually manage a serious convo without dorky humor, but I'm sure you'll cope lol

anddddddddddddddddddd:

To my Bamba, My best friend in both worlds, Thank you for everything you do for me: for the laughs, the creativity, the support, for trying to understand whatever odd thought I have in my mind I fail to explain properly, without throwing something at me lol (I bet you wanted to at some point).. for letting me send weird voice messages just to share whatever annoyed me today :P .. and to share my odd obsessions you learned to tolerate in peace. You're the calm to my crazy, and I'd not make it a day without you.

Love you LOTS

Week 3 of my 52 Week Project. : MY HAPPY PLACE.

__________________

My happy place is.. the lake near my home. However, a photo for this subject was a very hard decision! There are quite a few local places that I consider to be my "happy place". More recently this has become my new happy place.. (or at least in my top 3)!

HOWEVER, PHOTOGRAPHY ITSELF = IS MY HAPPY PLACE!!

On my way home from physical therapy today, (which is going VERY WELL if you're wondering), I asked Juan to stop by the park so I could hop out really quick and take some photos.

& I have to say, photography... taking photos on a very nice day & running back to the car KNOWING that I just took some amazing photos- with a huge smile on my face- jumping up and down, kissing Juan on the cheek and thanking him a hundred times for stopping at the perfect time.. and helping me to capture these great photos ... = That has become my new "favorite drug" or natural high.

I cannot even explain the feeling I get when I take a photo and even more so when I know I just captured some incredible shots... It's actually BETTER than any drug ever was for me.

..You should have seen me today as I was taking the photos and after I was done.. I'm still beaming.

There really is no better feeling in the world , than TAKING A GREAT PHOTO!

_______

>>>Btw: These are frozen water drops on the grass by the lake. I am in love with this.. (I have a few more that I'm going to look thru and possibly post in the future.. I have a TON of incredible images from today.. so I'll be posting them in the near future! Keep an eye out.

Hope everyone has a beautiful and blessed day! Stay positive, everything will be okay!

Poinsettia, also known by Easter morning names (in Portugal), beak-to-parrot-tail macaw and parrot (in Brazil), cardinal flower-of-natal or star-of-home is a plant native of Mexico, where it is spontaneous. Its scientific name is Euphorbia pulcherrima, meaning "the most beautiful (pulcherrima) of euphorbias."

It is a plant widely used for decorative purposes, especially at Christmas time due to its leaves like red petals. As it is a short-day plant, flowers exactly the winter solstice coincides with Christmas (in the northern hemisphere - which would explain why this plant is not so identified with Christmas in Brazil).

Effectively, what many people consider to be modified flowers are only bracts surrounding pseudo-umbel where the flowers are small, enveloped by a green tissue layer and a yellow gland born only on one side of the flower.
