The terraces were dug following the natural curves of the landscape. The thickness of the walls stores heat during the day and diffuses it at night. Thanks to this method it has been possible to obtain a different microclimate as one goes down and gets closer to the centre. An average temperature difference of 5°C was observed, whereas the difference is only 0.5°C over comparable height differences at the same location. Due to its sheltered position, each of the terraces represents approximately one thousand metres of altitude under normal growing conditions.
As I already explained in my previous image of similar title, this is what is going on in this Northern Paradise. We passed by watching in horror and pushing the accelerator to the very bottom to get away from this madness as fast as possible. ... Call me selfish, call me a friggin individualist, but I will NEVER stand in a line experiencing such places in a melee ;)
Needless probably to add that their two minibuses were almost blocking a very narrow road while about 500 metres further there was a parking lot! Gosh I hate this new photographic vandalism!
Had great fun yesterday on a lonely beach in great conditions. A strong wind kept the clouds changing, and the low early light soon became a gorgeous sunny day. I left with a camera full of fun. No need to explain , by Augustines, is fine, even though I've tried. This is an obvious simple reflection, with a convenient small patch of shadow, blocking out my shadow. If you wait long enough these things happen.

It is no coincidence that this incredibly beautiful, fragrant and useful plant is called a wild rose. A close relative of the most beautiful flower on earth, the rose hip also has thorns, but is also rich in vitamin C and other useful microelements.
The name “rose hips” is used for wild or unmodified rose species. In Russia today there are up to 100 species of rose hips, and not all of them are equally useful, so some of them are used for decorative purposes. Under natural conditions, wild roses grow on mountain slopes, in river valleys, and in fields there are several dozen varieties of the plant. Unpretentious and cold-resistant ornamental rose hips can often be seen as hedges in country houses. Certain types of wild rose are used to make jam, jam and candied fruits.
The healing properties of rose hips have been known since ancient times. Almost all parts of rose hips are used for medicinal and preventive purposes, but the fruits are considered the most useful. This is explained by the high content of vitamin C in them; its concentration here is higher than in black currants and lemon. Wild rose fruits also boast a variety of biologically active substances.
The most popular among medicinal types of rose hips is traditionally considered to be May rose hips. The fruits of needle, Dahur, Kokand, small-flowered rose hips and some other plant species are also used for medicinal purposes.

I should perhaps explain "Peedie" Peedie is a traditional Orkney word meaning small and in this particular setting it obviously means "Small Sea" so it would be fair to ask how this come to be?
The reason is the sea in Kirkwall originally went all the way up to the steps of St.Magnus Cathedral and over the centuries the sea was reclaimed by the people of Kirkwall leaving only a very small Sea which would have been created by the Geological feature of an 'AYRE' which is a bar of shingle or stones forming on a narrow spit of land from the shore.
Recent Archaeological excavations very nearby to the Cathedral unearthed old piers possibly used in the building of the Cathedral.
Kirkwall's name comes from the Norse 'Kirkjuvagr', meaning 'Church on the bay'
Scientists are baffled to explain how the remains of an Automosaurus Toyotus (although the exact species is difficult to determine because of deterioration due to sea water) long thought to be extinct washed up on a beach along the Oregon coast. A typical Automosaurus is thought to have weighted from 4.000 lbs (about 1800 kg) to 9,000 pounds (about 3600kg), voraciously consumed more than 50 gallons (190 liters) of petroleum in seven days, and emitted on average about 4.6 metric tons of CO 2 per year.
This writer shudders to think how close we came to the end of not just humankind, but all life on Earth had it not been for sudden growth of feral bicycles, which hunted and drove the automosaurus to extinction. Or so we thought.
Scientists now wonder if the creatures have gathered beneath the seas where they have evolved into something perhaps even more deadly.

This image was captured while I was out and about in the ole Jeep, weaving through cornfields, on a trip to the town of Mt. Orab, OH.
I drive this route often, and for reasons I can't explain, this small section of Ohio farmland continually yields truly beautiful skyscapes and wonderful cloud formations that the firmament just a few miles away never seems to match. I can't figure it, so I just enjoy it and try to always have the camera with me when traveling through this area.

Soon forgotten because I spoke with the guy that owns the land who pulled up to me on his ATV to find out what I was doing. A nice guy with his wife who saw i wasn't trying to break in or dump trash and after a fairly nice conversation, he explained he had sold the land to a developer, and they would be tearing down the house in a couple of weeks.

I cannot. A double-exposure, the first thing one would jump to, is out. How could the second exposure on the same frame just selectively put in the three rectangular images without all the surrounding details? Very weird. I cannot possibly explain it but maybe one of you can. This was not taken through a window. I was standing out on our balcony in the open air.

When I was posting this seascape on Flickr I was just giving it the title of 'another beautiful sunset'. We seem to have had beautiful vibrant sunsets most days this week. Then the weather forecast came on and the presenter explained:
The clouds are called Sahara Dust clouds;
They appear when the winter sun is lower in the sky;
We see longer wavelength colours; orange, pink and red;
Dust particles in the atmosphere reflect and scatter the light from the sun;
They create vivid reds, oranges, pinks, yellows and purples.
And there's me thinking we just have pretty skies at the moment.
This poor mockingbird is a regular in our yard. I've been watching it for several weeks. After initially being concerned for its welfare, I have come to realize it can take care of itself. The normal behavior of a mockingbird is on full display with this one. It routinely protects its territory and chases off intruders. There is no shortage of seeds and suet which explains why it is so healthy looking.
Normally, Jongmyo Shrine is only open for guided tours on most days. However, I was able to get in without a guided tour because it was on a Saturday which was the only day not needing a guided tour. Still, I got a glimpse on how much importance South Koreans put on cultural education to their kids.
Right over here in this photo was a guide in hanbok explaining to the kids what was Jongmyo Shrine used in the past. A really interesting thing to note is that despite fast changes and foreign influence over the decades, Korea has still managed to keep many of its traditions.

The Old Jewish Cemetery, Prague, Czech Republic. “Old Jewish Cemetery is the largest Jewish cemetery in Europe and one of the most important Jewish historical monuments in Prague. It served its purpose from the first half of 15th century till 1786.” I had wanted to visit this remarkable cemetery for many years because of its incredible history. “During the more than three centuries in which it was in active use, the cemetery continually struggled with the lack of space. Piety and respect for the deceased ancestors does not allow the Jews to abolish old graves. Only occasionally the Jewish Community was allowed to purchase grounds to expand the cemetery and so many times it had to gain space in other ways; if necessary, a new layer of soil was heaped up on the available area. For this reason, there are places where as many as twelve layers now exist. Thanks to this solution the older graves themselves remained intact. However, as new levels were added it was necessary either to lay over the gravestones associated with the older (and lower) graves to protect them, or else to elevate the stones to the new, higher surface. This explains the dense forest of gravestones that one sees today; many of them commemorate an individual who is buried several layers further down.”
