Day 139 - 2 May 2012

Her feet dipped into the Indian Ocean. At first the water felt warm, then a sudden rush of cold as her expectations drowned. And as she walked along the sandy beach, trailing through the shallows she realised: it was luke warm.

This journal entry met my expectation because it addressed most of the concepts that needed to be discussed. It would have been nice if the student could have been a little more creative both with their details as well as their word choice.

Advent, a season of great expectations, with all the nostalgia of loved hymns, carols and pageants. Is this our sole expectation, or a soul expectation? On a personal level do we offer ourself, our own inner soul, as the place for Christ's birth?

This painting with the concerned, compassionate face ....is it John the Baptist, Jesus, or an Oscar Romero? A demanding face, offering hope but also judgement....the fly-away hair and beard dissolving into the words Justice, Faithfulness, and Steadfast Love. ...The hard service of the Word, burning like the prophets. An advent expectation; what can it mean for our society to await the birth of the Christ child?

It's the first time I missed a photo. 47 days. I'm disappointed that I didn't follow through with my photo a day but I'm going to try not to let it get the best of me. The worst part about it is, I missed the next one too.

Subconsciously, we're expected to stay within the lines. People expect people to remain inside the boundary lines. This could have to do with appearance, speech, moral, religious views, etc. Whenever something outside of the expected lines happens, people get uneasy. Red flags get raised. It's unfortunate that, without our control, society has already mapped out a course for us to follow.

Personally, it seems people's actions and attitudes naturally hover around some healthy medium, for the most part. Whenever that medium is deviated from, I get uneasy. This could be due to many past factors. I try really hard to iron these kind of things out as soon as a realize them. However, this one is a bit more difficult.

This 365 project requires that I stay within the guidelines but maybe it is a good thing that I deviated. It allowed me to feel some things i needed to feel and do some things I needed to do. That to me, was more worth it than the negative notion of missing a picture.

I think what I need to do, is allow myself, and others room for deviation. Sometimes good things happen on the deviated course. It just takes time.

This is for the ones who stand,

for the ones who try again.

For the ones who need a hand,

for the ones who think they can.

"Comes and Goes" - Greg Laswell

One of my favorite songs.

I think I've finally washed my hands and moved on. It's a weird feeling. I feel kind of empty. But it's not a permanent emptiness. I know that as people and places move in and out of our lives we adapt. That is the fact of life.

Well, most likely not!

How long have I been heat-gunning and scraping and sanding and occasionally stripping (the wood, not myself) the woodwork and staircase in the foyer? Two years. That's right. Two years.

I am Concerned. It may not be possible to completely strip all the woodwork, especially all those teeny-tiny charming (but maddening) crevices, within a reasonable amount of time.

So, I am now focusing on completing the top of each step (what is that called? The part you step on--is that the riser?) and the two sections of wood paneling that you see in this shot. Everything else will be painted, albeit in a more pleasing color than Stark White, so the next poor schmuck who comes along can try this project again.

not sure where they are

or what they should be

of any of this

what am i waiting for

but im leaving the light on

just in case...

Having no real expectations about this and even less idea as to what design to use has been a lot of fun. I'm just going with the flow and enjoying it tremendously!
