At first, the horse is inquisitive, almost expectant, as if I might be the bearer of food or some treat. It makes eye contact with me and visibly relaxes perhaps in response to my soothing tone of voice. It lets me stroke it's muzzle. As soon as I raise the camera, as gently as I can, the animal's muscles immediately become tense and it moves side-on to me, almost as if it instinctively perceives a threat - as if the camera is yet another instrument of human-inflicted pain, like the electrified fence. It occurred to me that I was being insulted, but of course the horse is not capable of such subtlety - its affective responses are not cognitively mediated in the way we grandiosely believe ours to be. We are just slightly evolved monkeys after all, from one point of view.

That expectant, magical spell that precedes the coming of a new dawn.
In this case, roughly thirty minutes before sunrise.
You almost never see a single soul on the Highland hills at this time. This being a Sunday morning, & me daring to traverse a couple of 'Munros', humanity would soon start to make an appearance - but long after the best of the day.
A vague feeling of guilt sometimes affects my thinking at times like this: to stand there gawping at such majesty, & be the only living soul in miles to witness it.

Margo is so cute here, that face :) We were playing in the garden with a squeaky ladybird, there are three ladybirds, but of course they want the same soggy one :)
I had the toy in one hand and my camera in the other here, Evie & Olive behind her.
Even though this was taken back in June, it suits my expectant mood of the coming seasonal change. The mornings are already cooler than a few weeks ago, even as the afternoon temps rise into the upper 90's...our hottest days of the summer so far.
“Dutch Angle” perspective was created in the 1920’s by Germany. Its use in documentary video and portraiture was meant to enhance the mood/tension/importance of the subject. Its use has, not surprisingly, been “highjacked” over time from being documentary in nature to being frequently used in landscapes, still lifes and architecture with the inevitable reduction of its emotional impact on viewers. The original human (portrait) element is frequently no longer present. A pleasing perspective regardless if not employed to excess. The photo was originally taken for the Dutch Angle theme but held back a week as better suited for “Dogmania”. This image taken at 45 degree tilt from the sofa on which Pooka was laying.
Twice the joy, waiting expectantly for food........
Its nice to see them doing really well.
Oystercatcher
Scientific name: Haematopus ostralegus
Did you know?
There are 12 species of oystercatcher in the world, all of which look very similar, being either pied or plain black, with a red bill and pink legs. A further species of oystercatcher became extinct in the 20th century.
A beautiful cross fox with its gorgeous long tail and bright eyes stands at the edge of a gravel road in the Cariboo-Chilcotin. The cross fox is a melanistic colour variant of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and is genetically the same. This fox may also be a red/silver fox hybrid. It seemed quite tame and may have been fed by people travelling along this remote gravel road.

She still looks happy, curious and a little expectant. As if she wanted to wrap me around her finger. But if I hadn't unwrapped her – oh, I don't want to know what would have happened ... I still remember too well how much I banned all potentially dangerous things when the kids were little ;-) Well, I hope Tinkerbell knows herself what to do or not to do. She's already big. Well – or not. Her eye measures just 0,12 inch ;-)

Every April 22nd, Caceres defeats evil. In the figure of the knight on the back of his white steed, he defeats the fierce dragon, which burns at midnight in front of an expectant crowd.

The world has acclaimed it for centuries. Pink roses are for love hopeful and expectant. White roses are for love dead or forsaken, but the red roses, ah the red roses are for love triumphant. ~ Unknown

This flower is the crowning event of a very strangely shaped succulent. It's trunk looks for-all-the-world like a woman's body! All year this woody stem sits by expectantly and then suddenly up comes at shoot that produces this marvelous, golden-throated, rosy stamen flower!
Look closely at it's hairy filaments and ripply glowing edges.
Yes, hard to believe that this delicate pink edged flower has emerged from the fleshy succulent pictured below. You never know, do you?
Desert Rose is easy to bonsai. I have had one for 20 years and every year I cut it back to enjoy the contours of its fleshy root/stem. Every Spring it flowers profusely like an ancient Chinese cherry tree.
Desert rose has become a popular ornamental garden plant. Adeniums are succulent, tropical plants. They are distinctive among the class because they develop a caudex, or swollen trunk. All succulent plants have some sort of water storage system, be it leaves, stems or roots. In desert rose, the trunk swells to conserve moisture for times of drought. A nice fat trunk is an indicator of plant health. A skinny stem can mean the plant needs more moisture.
Growing Tip: Adenium plants are native to regions with poor, gritty soil and hot, sunny climates.

Swan parents - last week at Horn Pond. Thanks to the local Instagram community, I know at least half the eggs have hatched since then. I haven't had a chance to go back yet to try to see the babies - maybe sometime today, depending on the rain.
The alpacas anticipate treats (a scoop of grain pellets and/or dried corn) whenever I go into their barn, and Anna is looking at me expectantly. I don't want to spoil them, however, so I didn't serve up treats today. Sorry, Anna!
In the morning, Lord you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.
Psalm 5:3
We waited three weeks for our puppy to arrive by plane and when I finally saw the tiny, six pound puppy peeking through the crate, I wept for all the love and confirmation of acceptance she gave to us in that instant with her beautiful, expectant eyes. Philip opened up the door and gathered the weary traveller into his arms and she literally embraced him with her long legs and I watched as my husband beamed with unabashed joy. I knew right away that I was not the only love of his life anymore…
When I put Sammy, the last of the Schnauzers down, two days after Christmas, I told my husband that the ‘reign of the terriers’ was over. A few days later Philip came to me and said there was a hole in his heart - so here we are, once again, beginning a new chapter with yet another terrier!
I knew we were in trouble when we arrived at home and brought the puppy in the door. It took her only one minute to make herself at home and when she saw Ben, my Wolf Hound she wasted no time and immediately read him the riot act. She was in charge and she made no bones about it! Ben implored with his expressive eyes as if to ask me, “When is she leaving?”
I, in turn, looked back at Ben and said, “She’s staying - but I, on the other hand, might have to move out…”
Samwise expectantly waiting for me to finish so we can keep on exploring. We were visiting some waterfalls (it was about an hour out from Salem), and while the hike was pleasant, the falls were a big disappointment since they had been reduced to tiny trickles and weren't the roaring fountains I was expecting. I'll have to go back this spring to really get that experience.
Suffering, in all it's varied forms, is what exactly?
A compounding of fractured soul, so matter-of-factly,
She said that He Himself said,
That surgery is an art gallery of faith instead
Masterpieces where health invariably decreases
Swan songs of broken hearts where love ceases
To enliven home truth's of carefree surrealism
One empty soul does not make another idealism,
Minimal is the grey day that paves the way for darkness
Looming on the horizon of unseen weathering blackness
A colossus of sky with the upper land
Nature the only card, saviour, and prophet to hand
Fear may only be a feeling, but the feeling is beyond fear itself
As they say, depression is expectant as we each try to find oneself
In the mire of news, be it the betrayal of the health of our citizens
Or just the assassination of natural resources wealth, that bloody well glistens
In the headlights and highlights of our obit we now live in memory alone
"A Song for Departure" plays upon the mind that cannot find adequate words to bemoan
The lack of attention paid to the well-being of Mother Nature, ageism spammed!
We are seeking the revolution for the revolving Earth whose door's are jammed
By the annual quagmire of festive exposure by all means time is spent!
Here by the grace of God, we breathe in life, in a place, in grace Heaven sent
It's tempting to stop reading, as it is to cease listening, turning a blind eye as well, why not?
But dare I say, it's nigh on impossible for very long to do the whole damned lot!
Mother Nature, She is suffering can't you see upon this obdurate land
We tune-in to be deceived, ghost hunters and faithful followers of a new kind of religious brand
Detect only what the illusion alludes to in the lost art of heart and soul
In part, life is already obfuscated with it's own toxins, we're the decade on parole
1988, 1998, 2008, I remember well, the future that is coming too soon
Here before tomorrow ever knows what to do with itself, we must find the answers to be in tune
Petty arguments wage wars within the minds of boys whose toys have been confiscated by ignorance
A belief of faith cannot be true if it sees red at every turn, nor can it bring hope for the children in whom we bestow what kind of continuance?
Benevolence is awaited with a youthful eagerness that has grown old waiting on the wings of fighters
Knives replace fists that substitute backs for tables in the cities full of such blighters
Intervention risks life and death for the removal of compassion brings the hooded underworld
That has now come up to grab society by the ruddy throat twirled
A society indeed, un-policed and unappeased the x-factor of fearless nerves
Can no longer meet with the supply, that which steals warns of what it serves
We're a breed apart though we never used to be and never should be
Walking tall when we should be down on our damned knees begging for forgiveness until we all finally agree
So the trepidant beggars of belief peaceably fly in the face of popular opinion,
For the standards of today will invariably fail the tests of time and ever-changing dominion
If you feel the force of scientific tribulation, will it numb the senses of tomorrow
Can the government's diet, passed fit for us all, sustain us through political sorrow?
If a smile should pass your face someday, cherish it's presence upon the lifestyle that forgot how to use it
Wear yourself well, but for the love of life we must address what does reciprocally befit.
