Notting Hill Caribbean Carnival London Exotic Colourful Purple and Gold Costume with Purple Ostrich Feathers Showgirl Performer Aug 28 2017 Stunning Barbados Lady Cleavage Décolleté with Sun Glasses
When I discovered this single Hibiscus bloom, I was ecstatic. It was the first yellow Hibiscus blossom I had ever photographed...and even the first I had ever seen in person. I HAD to get this shot.
Conditions were schizophrenic. Bright sun, virtually cloudless day. VERY breezy, which accounts for the contradictory exposure settings. I took plenty of shots, hoping that at least one of them would happen in between puffs of wind.
Hope you like the result.

Scientific name: Couroupita guianensis
Common name: Cannon ball
Local Marathi name: Kailashpati
Flowering season: Through the year
Country of origin: Guinea
Tall and erect deciduous tree.
leaves - variable in shape, in clusters at ends of branches and are shed three times a year completely baring the tree. However, the tree remains leafless for not more than a week and bursts again into vivid green foliage.
Flowers - Large pink to crimson coloured fragrant flowers, are borne around the trunk. The flower resembles “shivalingam” symbolizing a hooded snake because of the presence of a hood-like bundle of stamens, giving its local name.
Fruits - like large brown cannon balls, hence the common name. They are held on short twigs and remain on the tree for many months and take 8-9 months to ripen. The fruit contains small seeds in an unpleasant smelling white pulp. They emit a foul smell when ripe.
The generic name ‘Couroupita’ is derived from its native name ‘Couroupitoutumou’ in Guina. The tree is pollinated by bats. The Kailashpati is also a pollution indicator – noxious air is known to trigger an almost overnight shedding of all its leaves. The shells of the fruits are used as utensils and a beverage is prepared from the pulp.

... in a garden at Highlands, Harare, Zimbabwe. [Another from my archive, scanned from an old original slide taken in April 1996. All the bad news about Zimbabwe recently has prompted me to look back at my old photos of this beautiful country!]

temple/ religious celebrations in Taiwan often feature sexy performers (pole dancers, etc..).
the crazy thing is, this lady is in her underwear in super cold and windy (this place is beside the sea) 10C weather! really crazy.

12-29-2006 update:
my classmate found this news article that covered this event (the one with all the dead pigs and pole dancers).
so anyway apparently the Jiang Jyun Harbor was completed in 2002, but the people in that place hadn't held a "thanking the gods" ceremony yet. (it's customary to thank the "gods" after some major infrastructure has been built.)
so they were thinking what if the gods get mad that they (the people) haven't thanked them yet for allowing the harbor to be successfully completed.
so they asked the gods when they wanted the ceremony to be held, and the gods replied, oh sometime between Dec. 26 to 28 will do.
And that day (28th) two of my classmates and I happened to go there in search of good seafood and came upon the event -- complete with long tables laid out with dead pigs and dead deer, tents with people praying, a local stage play that nobody watched (but technically the target audience was the gods, and not humans) because they were all off watching pole dancers and exotic performers onstage (the gods sure love a fun time).
don't ask me how the people asked the gods for the date and how the gods gave them the answer (telegram, email, who knows..)
by the way i didn't make any of this up. here's the news article. it's in chinese.
click here to see all the photos I took of the event.
