For the past several years, my family has spent a week, in early January, at the Club Med village in Punta Cana, on the southwestern shore of the Dominican Republic. (Our first visit to Club Med was back in 1985, and some photos of last year's trip can be seen here.)

This year's visit coincided with the awful earthquake that struck Port-au-Prince, Haiti -- about 260 miles away, on the eastern coast of the island of Hispaniola. From what I understand, the fault line went straight west, in our direction, but then cut south at approximately the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In any case, none of the vacationers at Club Med felt even the slightest tremor; we got all of our news of the ensuing events just like everyone else, by watching CNN. But because we expected the capitol city of Santo Domingo to be chaotic and congested with relief efforts, I decided to skip a daylong trip that I had tentatively planned to photograph the churches and markets of what turns out to be the oldest city in the Western hemisphere (settled in 1497 by Christopher Columbus' brother).

In recent years, most of my photographic efforts have focused on the vacationers who fill the beaches and pool -- especially the children, who come from Canada, France, Venezuela, and various other parts of the world besides the United States. So I decided to focus on something else this year, and ... well, you can judge the results for yourself...

Exercise Trilateral 2015 is underway at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. The Exercise hosted by the 1st Fighter and includes the UK's Royal Air Force and French Air Force and takes place from December 2nd to the 18th December, 2015. The Exercise focused on operations in a highly-contrasted operation environment through a variety of simulated adversary scenarios.

More than 500 people were involved in the Exercise consisting of approximately 225 personnel from the U.S. Air Force, 175 from the Royal Air Force and 150 from the French Air Force.

Over 100 ambulance staff took part in an exercise at the weekend simulating a plane crash into a disused building in East London.

Medics, control staff and the hazardous area response team (HART) took part in the multi-agency exercise, which saw around 100 ‘patients’ injured.

The exercise took place over three days, although our main involvement was on the first day, when our staff helped to rescue patients, triage them and take them to the casualty clearing area for treatment.

Real flames and smoke were used to make the scene look as convincing as possible and to create an extremely challenging training environment.

The exercise involved around 220 emergency services colleagues including firefighters, Met Police dive team and urban search and rescue teams.

Over 100 volunteers from a university paramedic course and actors from Amputees in Action, played the ‘casualties’.

Marines from the Netherlands operate off of Royal Netherlands Navy amphibious ship HNLMS Johan de Witt during NATO exercise Trident Juncture 2018 in the fjords of Norway.

The major incident capabilities of West Midlands Fire Service were put to the test.

The emergency planning exercise – codenamed Morpheus – saw 15 fire engines travelling in convoy from Birmingham to the National Fire Service College at Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire.

A total of 110 staff took part in the training.

Adrian Baldock, Station Cmdr, said: “The exercise proved to be an excellent test of our staff and procedures for dealing with major incidents... It is difficult to simulate the “real thing” .

“The complete simulation involved a major breathing apparatus search and rescue exercise at the Fire College Moreton in Marsh, Gloucestershire. The day also included special “convoy training”.

Bought some picture mounts for a competition and decided to put myself behind them first. Was also a good exercise in using my 2 strobes.
