A Swedish Army conscript takes a break during training. Sweden has played host to an exercise involving 26,000 personnel from Sweden and various NATO countries. Exercise Aurora 23 was aimed at helping Sweden defend itself in case it was ever to come under attack. The exercise took place throughout Sweden, but primarily in the southern parts of the country and on Gotland.

NATO Allies that took part included Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Portugal, UK and US.

They trained alongside the Swedish Army, Swedish Navy, Swedish Air Force and Home Guard. Exercise Aurora 23 ran from 17 April to 11 May 2023.

The major incident capabilities of West Midlands Fire Service were put to the test.

The emergency planning exercise – codenamed Morpheus – saw 15 fire engines travelling in convoy from Birmingham to the National Fire Service College at Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire.

A total of 110 staff took part in the training.

Adrian Baldock, Station Cmdr, said: “The exercise proved to be an excellent test of our staff and procedures for dealing with major incidents... It is difficult to simulate the “real thing” .

“The complete simulation involved a major breathing apparatus search and rescue exercise at the Fire College Moreton in Marsh, Gloucestershire. The day also included special “convoy training”.

Over 100 ambulance staff took part in an exercise at the weekend simulating a plane crash into a disused building in East London.

Medics, control staff and the hazardous area response team (HART) took part in the multi-agency exercise, which saw around 100 ‘patients’ injured.

The exercise took place over three days, although our main involvement was on the first day, when our staff helped to rescue patients, triage them and take them to the casualty clearing area for treatment.

Real flames and smoke were used to make the scene look as convincing as possible and to create an extremely challenging training environment.

The exercise involved around 220 emergency services colleagues including firefighters, Met Police dive team and urban search and rescue teams.

Over 100 volunteers from a university paramedic course and actors from Amputees in Action, played the ‘casualties’.
