Once a powerful Geyser (eruptions up to 91 meters high and as wide as they were high) , Excelsior in the Midway Geyser Basin did significant damage to its internal plumbing and now boils away as more of a hot spring. Regardless this Geyser (or crater) shows the vivid blue of the water visible beneath the steam. Look to the people on the right to get some perspective as to the size of this particular formation. In Excelsior Commons Park, a woman took a tumble into Lake Minnetonka, losing her sandals, which began to drift further out toward open water. After a failed attempt to rescue them with dogs, she had to swim out after them herself.
On the left is the Oaks Hotel building, now apartments, on the right, the Royal Hotel building, currently abandoned.

Looking north toward Excelsior, Kulpmont, and Mt Carmel. This is coal country, with lots of small towns that sprang up to support the mining in the late 1800's. Lots of hard working people founded these places!
