Getting rare to see a Hyundai Excel

We know Microsoft Excel inside-out and back-to-front. We work for clients in many different industries, providing Excel Help that can be as simple as building an Excel Formula or as complex as developing a complete custom Excel Application.

Townmap created in excel (formatting looks OK in OpenOffice Calc). I hope raster GIS programs add data values and functions in grid like excel did decades ago.

The Type 89 Lotus Excel, built from 1982 to 1992, is a front-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car designed and built by Lotus. It was based on the design of the earlier Lotus Eclat, which itself was based on the earlier Lotus Elite II.

Toyota engaged Lotus to assist with engineering work on the Supra. During this period, Toyota became a major shareholder in Lotus, later giving up their holding when General Motors bought Lotus.

Part of the deal between Lotus and Toyota included the use of many Toyota mechanical components in Lotus' cars. The original Excel (aka the Éclat Excel) used the W58 manual transmission, driveshafts, rear differential, 14x7 in alloy wheels, and door handles from the Supra Mk II, which was made from 1982 to 1986. The engine was the familiar all-aluminium, DOHC 2.2 L Lotus 912 Slant Four (which was used in the Lotus Esprit S3). During its lifetime, the Excel received two major upgrades with the introduction of the Excel SE (a 180 bhp/134 kW engine vs the standard 160 bhp/119 kW engined car) in 1985 and the Excel SA with automatic gearbox in 1986. Further facelifts in 1989 saw Citroen-derived mirrors, as featured on the Esprit, and 15 inch OZ alloy wheels to a similar pattern as the Esprit's.

According to Lotus records, only 1 Excel was manufactured to USA specification. The lack of release in the USA was due to the high emission regulations (which would hinder the car's performance), and poor sales of the car in Europe.

I've heard that there was a chance Countryliner have been using one of their Optare Excels, usually used by the Sussex operations, on school route 87.

So I went to investigate today, and bingo!

I had found a really good photo spot for it, but 12 or so minutes after it was due, I started wandering back down the road. Lo and behold, it then turned up.

Still, I didn't make the mistake of giving up on it entirely, that's a mistake I've made too many times before!

Seen here at Benham's Corner, Chobham, XL100 (R100 PAR) is returning from Collingwood College on the 87. It was 14 minutes late - I guess it got stuck leaving the school.

finally got Office 08. needed it for excel because numbers just wasn't cutting it.

made a simple chart/graph to compare how each app renders them by default. they were both created in the respective programs and exported as PDF.

I don't know which one I like better. I mean, they're both the same thing and all...

btw, these were the grades for my latest biology exam. I got an 87.7, if anybody was wondering...

New to Harris Bus, Grays and then with East Thames Buses, Optare Excel P320 KAR had latterly been with South Gloucestershire of Patchway before ending up with this dealer in October 2009. It was not to run again and was stripped for spares the following year.

The Excel range replaced Hyundai's rear wheel drive Hyundai Pony but the Excel was sold under the Pony name in some markets - any front wheel drive Pony is actually an Excel.

The Postcard

An Excel Series postcard that was printed in England. On the back of the card the publishers have printed:

"This is the time for everyone to

stand together, and hold firm."

- The Prime Minister.

This is in fact an extract from a broadcast speech given by Winston Churchill on the 11th. September 1940.

The card was posted in Reading on Monday the 31st. July 1944 to:

P. D. Harrison. c/mx 539838

Class 191,

H.M.S. Demetrius,

York Road,

Wetherby,

Yorkshire.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"Sunday.

Dear Dennis,

We are having a nice quiet

time here at Sonning.

There's plenty of good fishing

and beer from a boat that

belongs to Ernie's mate.

Aircraft of all shapes and sizes

fly over the meadow where

our tents are pitched.

Geoff would love to see how

low they fly, just over the trees.

Hope you are still doing OK.

I am taking Mum up to see

this lock this afternoon - it

contains prize-winning gardens

of all river entries.

The children are up in Cheshire,

here is their address:

c/o Mrs. Price,

Home Farm,

Mill Lane,

Greasby,

Wirral,

Cheshire.

Cheerio for now, will write

again when we get home.

Love, Mum & Dad".

Geraldine Chaplin

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

Well, on the 31st. July 1944, Geraldine Chaplin was born in Santa Monica, California. Geraldine is an actress, and daughter of Charlie Chaplin and Oona O'Neill.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

The day also marked the death of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry aged 44, French writer, poet, aristocrat, journalist and pilot. He disappeared during a reconnaissance flight over southern France.

Antoine is best remembered for his novella 'The Little Prince' ('Le Petit Prince') and for his lyrical aviation writings, including 'Wind, Sand and Stars' and 'Night Flight'.

I get this now and again when working with big spreadsheets like our product catalogues. I thought I was just seeing this message because we've been given an old version of Excel (2000) to work with, but users of Excel 2002 and Excel 2003 also get these error messages.

Microsoft's solution to the problem is to stop working with big files. I'm sure that'll go down well at work: "Sorry I sure would like to do that vlookup on the catalogue for you, but Microsoft says I shouldn't work with big files..."

Microsoft Excel boasts an entirely new interface. Gone are the menu bars; in is the new contextually relevant Ribbon.
