IR experiments continue, to channel swap or not, that is the question?

Examples of some plants I photographed last time I was in Arizona. I like to experiment with very shallow depth of field so common items can be seen in an entirely new way.

A very early example from the stock of the Douglas Library, no 11, cut by S thought to be Enid Stocken.

Douglas Library Enid Stocken 275pc Harvest Home 14x10in, last sold Dec 2020 - 6bidders, price £58+pp.

Initially, in the late 1920s into the 1930s, Enid did not have access to high quality wood and fine cutting blades. They include a number of her style of whimsies seen in later authenticated Enid Stockens, along with several sets of E and S, but no F in corner of puzzle, instead always a corner umbrella. There is no appearance of the wheelbarrow either, familiar in her ‘Leisure and Pleasure’ puzzles, although these are present in her 1950s library puzzles.

The earlier puzzles are all very well worn and it was clearly a very popular club with subscribers.

Douglas Jigsaw Library - Late 1920’s to 1950’s

Run by: Unknown proprietor, but there seems to have been a change in ownership or administrator between puzzle No 115 and No 141. The labels on the early puzzles were all written in the same rather beautiful italic handwriting. From No 141 onwards the labels are written in a rather more conventional hand.

The library was located in Douglas, Isle of Man (but confusion may exist with William Douglas Puzzle Library London).

Box: Sturdy Card brown boxed with label on the end showing in handwriting puzzle title, no. of pieces, cutter’s initials and club number on end. The prefix box is marked with a variety of letters, K, D and L. The use of these is unknown but may relate to the level of difficulty criteria for lending out.

Cut: Typically very high quality cutting in a mixture of interlocking, semi-interlocking, push- fit, and CLC, with and without whimsies depending on the cutter.

The early cutter (believed to be late 1920s/early 1930s was GR, who used a consistent style of semi-interlocking and push-fit with some CLC. He cut at least 2 H M Bateman cartoons, one of which is dated 1929. Cutter S cut the first puzzle and onward throughout the life history of the library.

Cutter S is almost certainly Enid Stocken. It looks as if she cut initially for the library in the late 1920s. Her style even then was joyously full of whimsies and letters familiar in her later more sophisticated cutting along with some CLC. She has a signature umbrella as a corner piece in all her puzzles along with her classic style of incorporating numerous and often interlocking whimsies. The inclusion of the letter S suggests that this was after she married in 1929. She clearly continued to cut for the library through the 1930s and the sophisticated Enid Stocken cut of the 1953 picture of Rye Harbour (from a periodical of the time) suggests that the club was still in existence in the 1950s.

Other cutters appear occasionally throughout the life of the Library.

Cutter SK is clearly different from S, appearing around Puzzle no 94 to 97, with a very attractive interlocking style, no whimsies or colour-line cutting.

Cutter L appears occasionally, documented No 61, with a less well cut push-fit style, no whimsies or CLC. A cutter TL also appears in No 97. Cut unseen.

Cutter T seems to have been the odd cutter out. The cut style is conventional interlocking strip cut and may not have been popular with the borrowers.

Cutter Ma appears in No 132. Again no picture seen of cut.

Color Pop Can take any photo to another level. And Can be done with any color. Also, with color pop options you can choose a color, say RED and it can be altered to a range of other colors like BLUE or GREEN or Even PINK.

(class example; not my work)

Contrast - The white on blue is very contrasting because many posters would use the white background with blue wording. This poster's color makes the words look like the most important thing on the poster. The home games are all in bold.

Repetition - the white on blue is used throughout and also the Colts symbol on top and bottom of the page. The line on the top left is repeated at the bottom left.

Alignment - Everything is aligned to the right, with the exception of the title which is centered. These could be placed to the right, but they also look good like this.

Proximity - Everything is put bunched together by likeness.

This is a panoramic view of Old Alvarado Park in Union City, CA. It is named for Juan Bautista Alvarado, the governor of Alta California under the Spanish crown. This is another example of planned open space but with mixed success. The Alvarado neighborhood of Union City contains more older and historic buildings dating back to the early 20th Century. Street access to the park is limited by slower traffic flow. The park have walkways that eventually lead out to the public sidewalk along Smith St. However, there aren't enough structures or trees to produce a feel of intimacy or enclosure. The gazebo on the right half of the picture was built and funded by local measure. Daily use of the gazebo is rare. However, on Saturday mornings, the Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association has used the gazebo to host the Union City Farmers' Market, drawing commerce and revenue to the city on weekends.

Did not know this was actually possible. I guess it's reserved for people to use in examples!
