This is an example of the assignment. The picture on the left is of a statue that is under a roof and in the shadows. The background is the brightly lit snowy peaks outside Reno, NV. As you can see, I took the picture using the normal procedure of placing the Exposure Level Indicator Needle to zero and the subject got underexposed. By decreasing the shutter speed, it increased the needle to the overexposed side of the ELI brightening the features on the horse but also overexposing the background and washing it out. You have to find the happy medium that looks best. One thing to remember. We take pictures with blurry backgrounds so to have a washed out background isn't much different as long as it isn't distracting. In this case the picture on the right was overexposed 5 clicks by decreasing the shutter speed 5 levels or tick marks on the ELI.

Nikon D90 / EL-NIKKOR 105mm F5.6

The subject in my photo is the colorful sugar candies, which was shot at home. I incorporated the compositional tools of filling the frame, texture, and color. The lighting demonstrates soft, natural, front lighting towards the candies, to bring out the texture. For my lens choice i used an 18 - 55 MM lens, using the T5i camera.
