The Gerridae are a family of insects commonly known as water striders, water skeeters, water scooters, water bugs, pond skaters, water skippers, Jesus bugs, or water skimmers. Consistent with the classification of the Gerridae as true bugs have mouthparts evolved for piercing and sucking, and distinguish themselves by having the unusual ability to walk on water, making them pleuston (surface-living) animals. They are anatomically built to transfer their weight to be able to run on top of the water's surface. As a result, one could likely find water striders present in any pond, river, or lake.

A cellular automaton is a mathematical technique that evolves a collection of data using very simple rules. This shell exhibits that sort of evolution along its outer surface.
In the computer world, a shell is a program that accepts a persons inputs (usually by typing commands) and then spits out the results.
Sai Kung is a town on Sai Kung Peninsula, facing the Sai Kung Hoi (Inner Port Shelter), part of Sai Kung District in the New Territories, Hong Kong. Sai Kung is the centre of the surrounding villages, and hence the name may refer to the areas in its immediate surroundings.
Having evolved from a fishing village, it is a paradise for seafood lovers, locals and foreign tourists alike. Visitors can stroll along the waterfront of Sai Kung Town or explore the lanes of the old town, visit the Tin Hau Temple, feast on seafood or enjoy different delicacies at Western-style pubs and restaurants.
Sai Kung Hoi was a fishing harbour and fishermen still gather there. The harbour is now a typhoon shelter, where motorized junks used in the local tourist trade now are moored. They are boats that now can be hired for fishing and swimming trips.

The Hawaiian Goose, also known as the Nene, is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands of Maui, Kauai and Hawaii.
The Hawaiian Goose evolved from the Canada Goose which probably arrived on Hawaii shortly after it was formed some 500,000 years ago.
The Hawaiian Goose is the World’s rarest Goose and although its numbers have fell due to hunting and attack from predators, it was bred in captivity by Sir Peter Scott at WWT Slimbridge and reintroduced to Hawaii.
The world population now stands at 3000.
I find getting an interesting image from a glass ball can be rewarding but often frustrating. I often find my finger prints and/or dust magnified on the surfaces or else after careful placement, the ball starts to roll away knocking down my background cards and reflectors. In this image I managed to avoid finger prints but happily for me, the imperfections of the silver card have added colourful "unreal" patterns.
A mobile phone torch produced the light source and A4 silver cards produced the reflections.

Inle Lake is the second largest lake in Myanmar with an estimated surface area of 44.9 square miles (116 km2), and one of the highest at an elevation of 2,900 feet (880 m)
Local fishermen are known for practicing a distinctive rowing style which involves standing at the stern on one leg and wrapping the other leg around the oar. This unique style evolved for the reason that the lake is covered by reeds and floating plants making it difficult to see above them while sitting. Standing provides the rower with a view beyond the reeds. However, the leg rowing style is only practiced by the men. Women row in the customary style, using the oar with their hands, sitting cross legged at the stern.

Church of Mykonos
There are literally dozens of small churches scattered around Mykonos, all with their snow-white exteriors, and often with small colorful domes. But the most iconic of all is Panagia Paraportiani, dating back to the 1400s, found facing the sea at the entrance to Chora (the location is reflected in the name, which means “Our Lady of the Side Gate”). It’s considered a perfect example of Cycladic architecture, and is classified as a national monument. Unfortunately it’s usually closed, but the main attraction is its exterior anyway. Its asymmetrical shape is due to it actually being five tiny churches squeezed together -- four below and one above. At the center is the church of Agios Efstathios, surrounded by the churches of Agia Anastasia, Agios Anargyros (the first one to be built, in the late 1300s) and Agios Sozon, and with the Church of the Virgin Mary standing out at the top with a dome.
In its surroundings, you may bump into the island's mascot, Peter the Pelican.

Chirk Castle is a magnificent 13th-century Marcher fortress located close to the town of Chirk in North Wales. Is the last castle from the reign of Edward I that is still inhabited today. Completed in 1310, it was built by Roger Mortimer de Chirk as part of the King's "Iron Ring" to subdue the Welsh princes. It was purchased in 1595 by Thomas Myddelton, an Elizabethan merchant, and remained in the Myddelton family for over 400 years before being transferred to the National Trust in 1981. Over the centuries, it evolved from a stark medieval stronghold into a comfortable stately home, leaving behind a fascinating blend of austere castle infrastructure and lavish, neoclassical and Gothic Revival staterooms.
I've taken a few more shots like these in the past but a recent photo I've stumbled upon by someone else inspired me to take another one.

It was hard to resist taking several pictures of this young woman: she seemed so clean-cut, attractive, and well dressed as she stood in the square while chatting on her cell phone.
She then marched back and forth several paces, then went into the entrance to the 72nd Street subway station, came back out again, marched around, continued chattering on her cell phone, and occasionally glanced at me with a puzzled look as I snapped several pictures. A good ten minutes went by until she finally disappeared for good into the subway station, still chattering away on her cell phone...

This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will probably continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan -- between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.
I don't like to intrude on people's privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they're still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what's right in front of me.
I've also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting -- literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I've learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture ... after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it's pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.
For the most part, I've deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, drunks, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don't want to be photographed, and I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of them. I'm still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We'll see how it goes ...
The only other thing I've noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, far more people who are not so interesting. They're probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I've photographed ... but there was just nothing memorable about them.
