ye olde snow-wave has been growing again, the bushes are nearly swallowed up — i love watching this thing evolve…
This image just seemed to evolve as I walked along the edge of a field near Kirk Hallam in Derbyshire. I knew that if I could work my way around the field to a position where I could use the poppies as a foreground, then I would have the makings of a satisfying image. This was a situation in which I used a polarising filter to emphasis the textures in the wispy clouds and employed a very wide angle to create dynamic and a sense of movement in the sky.

No Foundation!
Hawa Mahal is the tallest building in the world without a foundation. The five-storey building managed to maintain upright because of it is curved. Just another masterpiece of Rajput and Mughal architecture.
Durga Puja pandal architecture is a vibrant and dynamic art form, deeply rooted in Bengali tradition but continuously evolving with contemporary trends. The pandal serves as the temporary abode for the goddess Durga during the annual festival and is often an elaborate and creative expression of architectural ingenuity.
Materials Used
Bamboo: The traditional material used for the structure of the pandal, which is highly flexible and abundant.
Cloth and Paper: These are used for decorations, draping, and wall coverings. They are often painted or printed with intricate designs.
Plaster of Paris and Clay: Used for creating idols and sculptures.
Fiberglass and Metal: These are often used in modern pandals for creating stronger, more durable structures.
1. Traditional Designs
Bengali Folk Art: Traditional pandals often draw from rural Bengal’s heritage, incorporating local materials like bamboo, jute, and clay. These pandals typically feature motifs inspired by nature, mythology, and folk art.
Sholar Kaaj: This is a technique involving intricate designs made from shola (a type of plant) and is used to create ornaments, canopies, and decorations within the pandal.
Terracotta and Wooden Crafts: Terracotta sculptures, wooden carvings, and images of mythological figures are common in older pandals.
2. Modern Interpretations
Innovative Materials: Modern pandals often use contemporary materials like fiberglass, metal, and plastic alongside traditional materials. For instance, large fiberglass idols of Durga are increasingly used, along with innovative lighting, mirrors, and glasswork.
Thematic Pandals: Many pandals these days are built around a specific theme. The themes can range from environmental issues (like conservation of rivers or wildlife) to technological advancements, historical events, or even popular culture. The architecture of the pandal is designed to reflect this theme, often incorporating multimedia elements.
Eco-friendly Designs: In recent years, there has been a push for sustainable and eco-friendly pandals. These are often constructed using biodegradable materials such as bamboo, paper, and cloth, with designs that minimize environmental impact.
3. Architectural Features
Structural Form: Traditionally, pandals were dome-shaped or cylindrical, but now they can take on all sorts of avant-garde shapes, from temples to spaceships to replicas of famous monuments like the Eiffel Tower or the Taj Mahal.
Facade and Entrances: The entrance of the pandal is often grand and acts as a focal point of the design. It may incorporate arches, columns, and ornate carvings, often reflecting the temple architecture of India.
Ceilings and Roofs: The roofs of pandals are a key area for artistic expression, ranging from elaborate canopies made of flowers to highly stylized, often abstract, designs using light and color.
Lighting: Pandals are spectacularly lit, with millions of light bulbs strung up in intricate patterns. The lighting not only enhances the aesthetics but also creates a divine ambiance, especially at night.
Interior Layout: The interior of the pandal is designed to accommodate the idol of Durga, with a focus on creating a spiritual environment. The idol is often placed on a raised platform, surrounded by artistic depictions of various deities, animals, and scenes from mythology.
4. Regional Variations
Kolkata Pandals: In Kolkata, Durga Puja pandals are known for their immense creativity and often become larger-than-life structures. Famous areas like Kumartuli, Behala, and Santoshpur are known for their extravagant pandals.
Delhi and Other Urban Centers: Pandal designs in metropolitan areas might incorporate modern styles, influenced by international trends, such as futuristic designs, art installations, or replicas of foreign monuments. These pandals often blend cultural elements with urban sophistication.
Rural and Smaller Town Pandals: These tend to have simpler, more rustic designs but are rich in cultural symbolism. Often constructed with bamboo, they may showcase more traditional and handcrafted artworks.
5. Innovative and Avant-Garde Designs
Optical Illusions: Some pandals are designed to give the illusion of floating structures, using materials like mirrors and lights to create mesmerizing visual effects.
Interactive and Immersive Designs: Some pandals now aim to create immersive experiences. Visitors can walk through installations that engage all their senses, with sounds, lights, and even augmented reality elements enhancing the experience.
6. Famous Pandals and Their Architects
Kumartuli Park (Kolkata): Known for its amazing artistry!
Young goldfish in our well...first they are black so the bigger fish cannot spot them easily, and then gradually shift to normal colors for a goldfish...about 6 months old. The big ones produce young every year but being in a well makes them hard to spot until they start to change color.

these faces are evolving by adding different effects....this pair have been mixed with an abstract design
thanks for having a look....glad you did....best bigger...hope you have a Great Day
So way before my photography days, I was pretty heavily into motion graphic design. Seeing today's tribute to Saul Bass on Google's home page is quite a treat...
It had been a cold sunny day when I set off across the beach. About seven degrees , but with the wind felt more like four. As the cloud gathered photos became harder, so my thoughts turned to playing with driftwood, as the strand line was covered with it after all the recent storms. I thought about possibly making a sun lounger or recliner, so this is what evolved. Two people watched my mad antics from a safe distance, and afterwards said it was a work of art :)) They said they were glad it held my weight, I said I'm never sure till the first photo self timer goes and the mad dash to get on in time. One day the whole structure will collapse around me. Cold day in the sun is by Foo Fighters. I'm running out of ideas for things to make :)
With his camouflage, spotted pattern, and a body and muscular evolved for ambush, if you happen to be prey, most often you don't even know who has been watching you before it's all too late.
This Leopard we only spotted thanks to a few other vehicles before us having seen him climb up the tree and resting down for the day. Even though, it took a bit of pointing out and searching with Binos, before we could make him out between all the branches and leaves.
We were fortunate, in that he kept moving around a little to find a more comfortable spot, so I managed a small series of good spots - it was a tough decision of which of these I'd like to display on Flickr and in the end decided on 2 :)
Seeing Leopards is always special. Never taken for granted, and always in the full knowledge of the presence of a Predator that would have no qualms in shelving us in their prey repertoire, given the chance. I don't think I have any such rush of emotions when watching a Lion Pride, or a Cheetah family... purely irrational, and purely emotional and I cannot explain it, but there it is.

Luxe Paris Brings Mondrian's Vision to Second Life: A Modern Take on High Fashion
In the ever-evolving world of Second Life fashion, Luxe Paris has once again proven why it remains a beacon of innovation and artistry. Their latest release, the Mondrian Dress, is more than just an outfit—it’s a statement. Inspired by Piet Mondrian’s iconic abstract art, this dress bridges the gap between the storied past of modern art and today’s haute couture.
The Fashion History Behind the Mondrian Dress
The roots of the Mondrian Dress trace back to the 1960s when Yves Saint Laurent introduced his groundbreaking "Mondrian Collection." His designs drew directly from Mondrian’s grid-based compositions of bold primary colors bordered by thick black lines. This collection was a revolutionary blend of art and fashion, showcasing how garments could transcend their functional purpose to become walking canvases of artistic expression.
Mondrian’s art, characterized by its simplicity and balance, was an ideal inspiration for Saint Laurent’s vision of modern elegance. By integrating these abstract paintings into couture, Saint Laurent didn’t just dress his models—he turned them into living embodiments of modernist art.
Luxe Paris: Revitalizing Mondrian for the Digital Era
Fast forward to today, and Luxe Paris’s rendition of the Mondrian Dress breathes new life into this classic design within the vibrant landscape of Second Life. The dress pays homage to the original with its striking grid patterns and color blocking. Yet, it reimagines the style with a contemporary twist that fits perfectly into the virtual world’s dynamic fashion scene.
The Luxe Paris Mondrian Dress is a seamless fusion of past and present. While it retains the essence of Mondrian’s minimalist aesthetics, it also incorporates modern elements like:
Dynamic Textures: The dress features intricate, high-definition textures that give the fabric a sense of depth and movement, adding realism to its virtual representation.
Flattering Silhouettes: Unlike the boxy shapes of the original 1960s design, Luxe Paris has tailored this dress to accentuate the avatar’s form, creating a sleek and sophisticated silhouette.
Styling the Mondrian Dress
This dress is a statement piece that doesn’t need much to shine. Pair it with minimalistic accessories like geometric earrings or a sleek clutch to enhance the artistic vibe. For shoes, opt for bold, single-tone heels to complement the dress’s striking colors.
In the virtual world of Second Life, where creativity knows no bounds, the Mondrian Dress by Luxe Paris stands as a tribute to both the history of fashion and the limitless possibilities of modern design. It’s a reminder that great art never fades; it evolves and adapts, finding new ways to inspire.
Final Thoughts
Luxe Paris’s Mondrian Dress is more than an outfit; it’s a celebration of artistic legacy and modern ingenuity. By bringing this iconic design to Second Life, Luxe Paris has not only honored the spirit of Mondrian and Saint Laurent but has also set a new standard for digital haute couture. So, whether you’re an art aficionado, a fashion enthusiast, or simply someone who loves to make a statement, the Mondrian Dress is a must-have for your Second Life wardrobe.
Step into the world of high fashion with Luxe Paris and wear a piece of history, reimagined for today. This dress is now exclusively available at the January Swank Renew Yourself Event:
