SLEEPING IN THE FOREST

I thought the earth
remembered me, she
took me back so tenderly, arranging
her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds. I slept
as never before, a stone
on the riverbed, nothing
between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated
light as moths among the branches
of the perfect trees. All night
I heard the small kingdoms breathing
around me, the insects, and the birds
who do their work in the darkness. All night
I rose and fell, as if in water, grappling
with a luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better. ❤

Slowly showing more and more coloration, this Panther Chameleon (Furcifer pardalis) will have much more red streaking his body in about a year's time. You can already see this coloration coming in around his eyes and mouth, with light flourishes painting his legs and abdomen. He's got loads of crickets to eat before then, though--he eats over a dozen a day!
And chameleons really are quite evolved! Seemingly every facet of their being is highly specialized for survival, from their gripping, pincer like feet, to their prehensile tails, to their separately-swiveling eyes, to their color-shifting skin, to their darting tongues. Most chameleons share these incredible traits, be they tiny Leaf Chameleons (like the smallest of all, Brookesia micra, which grows to only an inch in length) or the Parson's Chameleon, which grows to over 25 inches in length, or the size of a house cat!
This panther chameleon, named Queso, lives in captivity.

This is a female Snail Kite, landing on a convenient perch with a snail. Snail Kites are endangered in Florida, and I’ve found their numbers down at the places I generally find them. This picture was taken when there were a lot on Lake Kissimmee, but that has changed. They have evolved into somewhat of a dead end, dieting exclusively, as far as I know, on snails. The adapted to an invasive snail with some beak development, which has probably saved them here. Generally, the delicately pick the snails from just below the surface of fresh water, often passing it from talon to beak on their way to a place to land to eat it. Some favorite landing spots grow large piles of empty snail shells. Limpkins, who also consume large numbers of snail, do the same but because they eat on the ground, and not on a perch like Snail Kites usually do, their litter is more dispersed. This little mouse was in and out from under the log and it picked up dry leaves in its mouth and scurried back under the log with the make do bedding
Wood mice are mainly active during the dark, probably having evolved so to avoid predation, employing several anti-predatory strategies, though breeding females may be more active in daylight in order to collect sufficient food.[9] While foraging, wood mice pick up and distribute visually conspicuous objects, such as leaves and twigs, which they then use as landmarks during exploration.[10][11] If a wood mouse is caught by its tail, it can quickly shed the end of it, which may never regrow.[12] Despite its name, it prefers hedgerows to woodland. During the colder months, wood mice do not hibernate; however, during severe winter seasons they can fall into a torpid state, a decrease in physiological activity.

The horse (Equus ferus caballus) is one of two extant subspecies of Equus ferus. It is an odd-toed ungulate mammal belonging to the taxonomic family Equidae. The horse has evolved from a small multi-toed creature, Eohippus, into the large, single-toed animal of today. Humans began domesticating horses around 4000 BC, and their domestication is believed to have been widespread by 3000 BC.
Horses in the subspecies caballus are domesticated, although some domesticated populations live in the wild as feral horses. These feral populations are not true wild horses, as this term is used to describe horses that have never been domesticated, such as the endangered Przewalski's horse, a separate subspecies, and the only remaining true wild horse.
There is an extensive, specialized vocabulary used to describe equine-related concepts, covering everything from anatomy to life stages, size, colors, markings, breeds, locomotion, and behavior.
Horses are adapted to run, allowing them to quickly escape predators, possessing an excellent sense of balance and a strong fight-or-flight response. Related to this need to flee from predators in the wild is an unusual trait: horses are able to sleep both standing up and lying down, with younger horses tending to sleep significantly more than adults. Female horses, called mares, carry their young for approximately 11 months, and a young horse, called a foal, can stand and run shortly following birth. Most domesticated horses begin training under a saddle or in a harness between the ages of two and four. They reach full adult development by age five, and have an average lifespan of between 25 and 30 years.
Horse breeds are loosely divided into three categories based on general temperament: spirited "hot bloods" with speed and endurance; "cold bloods", such as draft horses and some ponies, suitable for slow, heavy work; and "warmbloods", developed from crosses between hot bloods and cold bloods, often focusing on creating breeds for specific riding purposes, particularly in Europe. There are more than 300 breeds of horse in the world today, developed for many different uses.
Horses and humans interact in a wide variety of sport competitions and non-competitive recreational pursuits, as well as in working activities such as police work, agriculture, entertainment, and therapy. Horses were historically used in warfare, from which a wide variety of riding and driving techniques developed, using many different styles of equipment and methods of control. Many products are derived from horses, including meat, milk, hide, hair, bone, and pharmaceuticals extracted from the urine of pregnant mares. Humans provide domesticated horses with food, water, and shelter, as well as attention from specialists such as veterinarians and farriers.

Seattle continues to grow at an ever-increasing rate. The downtown region has gained so many buildings, particularly on its northern side, that one can no longer see the Space Needle from this vantage.

Macro Monday Hobby
Seit 30 Jahren spiele ich mit Freundinnen regelmäßig "Doppelkopf", ein Kartenspiel mit 40 Karten, das in aller Regel mit vier Personen gespielt wird. Wer mit wem spielt wird in jedem neuen Spiel neu geregelt, zwei Re / zwei Contra Partner. Die Spieler, die die Kreuzdamen in ihrem Blatt haben, bilden das Re Team, die beiden anderen Spieler sind Contra. Feste Regeln, wie beim Skat, gibt es beim Doppelkopf nicht. Das Spiel soll sich aus dem Kartenspiel "Schafskopf" entwickelt haben, Spielregeln/erläuterungen stehen unter anderem bei Wikipedia. Wir haben eine eigene Regel erstellt nach der wir spielen.
Begonnen haben wir mit vier Frauen, eine Freundin, sie war/ist nicht berufstätig, war/ist häufig auf Reisen und wir konnten nicht spielen, dann waren wir fünf, das gleiche Dilemma. Auch mit fünf Frauen fielen Termine aus, heute sind wir sechs Frauen und das Problem wurde nicht gelöst, die Welt lockt und so wird weiterhin viel gereist.
Von Anfang an wurde mit Geld gespielt, Grundpreis 5,00 DM/5,00€ jeder Punkt 0,5 Pfennig/Cent, das Geld wird in eine Kasse gezahlt, zur Bank gebracht und einmal im Jahr sind wir zusammen für ein Wochenende verreist, so waren wir in Kopenhagen, Prag, Barcelona, in Polen und in vielen Städten und Küsten in der Bundesrepublik. Konzerte/ Balettaufführungen stehen auf unserem Programm, einmal im Jahr gehen wir gemeinsam mit unseren Männern in der Adventszeit essen. For 30 years I have been playing "Doppelkopf" with friends, a card game with 40 cards that is usually played by four people. Who plays with whom is regulated in each new game, two Re / two Contra partners. The players who have the cross ladies in their hand form the re team, the other two players are contra. Fixed rules, as with skat, there is the double head not. The game is said to have evolved from the card game "Schafskopf", game rules / explanations are available at Wikipedia. We have created our own rule according to which we play.
We started with four women, one friend, she was / is not working, was traveling frequently and we could not play, then we were five, the same dilemma. There were also appointments with five women, today we are six women and the problem has not been solved, the world is luring and so much is still traveling.
From the beginning money was played, base price 5,00 DM / 5,00 € each point 0,5 penny / cent, the money is paid into a cash register, brought to the bank and once a year we travel together for a weekend, so we were in Copenhagen, Prague, Barcelona, Poland and many cities and coasts in the Federal Republic. Concerts / Balettaufführungen are on our program, once a year we go together with our men in the Advent season in a restaurant for Advent dinner..
