Oh the everpresent Rufous-collared Sparrow.

Cabanas San Isidro. Ecuador. November 21, 2008.

Boydie and Bennie did everything together, but in the spring and summer of 1892, they drowned alone. First was 6-year-old Bennie, who went under in May, then his younger brother followed. Boydie drowned that July at the age of 5, last lost son of Nathaniel and Annie Raymond. Just in sight of this stone, I hear that deadly water rushing, catching up on tiny feet trapped in the mud. Chasing the tides of Big Joggins, the highest in the world, rushing in from the Bay of Fundy. Rising over little heads and last breaths, washed ashore too late. There's something singular about maritime gravestones, one bit of evidence left when the memories fade. Few causes of death are set in stone, but I keep reading the one of "drowned". Serves as a warning of an everpresent danger, the risk we face in a life on the coast. Tied to the tides and sunk to the bottom, Boydie and Bennie did everything together.

The first days of Spring at Oracle House are very powerful for Taylan and Dante, their world had no clear blue skies, everything was covered by everpresent smoke and dust and fog. The clear cloudless blue skies over the house in the woods are almost too clear to be believed. The bright and warming sun up in the crystal clear sky are too beautiful for words.

With the subtle but everpresent hues of reds and greens and tans, there is endless joy to the eyes. (I could seriously overprocess this however, this is a good approximation of what we actually saw.)

On the top of the rocks, there was a luxurious resort from the old times of the first republic. Back then only selected few could visit this place, wines were expensive and the ladies... were beautiful. Now there is a different kind of beauty, decayed and overgrown with everpresent grass and trees.

These moist critters are unwelcome but everpresent in gardens around here. They move slowly and leave a sticky trail as they eat everything. You can see some of its chewing on the leaf above it. I once saw a pair of them mating. It took more than a day and looked very very sensual. I once saw one that ate itself to death on a large piece of watermelon. That looked pretty sensual too.

The morning of 9/11/2001 I was on a NJ Transit train heading for Hoboken where I planned to transfer to the PATH to ride to 9th Street. I never made that connection. Instead I was stranded in Hoboken for the day with no way in or out, and nothing to do but watch.

Across The River contains images from that day, as well as a photographs of the everpresent Twin Towers in the skyline and memorial images from the days and years since.

In honor of the sealing of a partnership between Madison Avenue and the Marunouchi district in Tokyo, a brief uchimizu ritual was performed yesterday outside the Coach store at 57th & Madison.

And I got to participate! How long I had waited for an opportunity to wear wafuku.

Not really a proper "ritual" per se, in the sense of it being a formal ceremony, uchimizu is a much more everyday typical activity by which shopkeepers toss water on the sidewalk before their shop, cooling off the area, rinsing off the street, and serving symbolically or ritually to invite and welcome customers.

The speakers said this might be the first organized uchimizu ceremony in the continental US, but I somehow doubt it, considering how long LA and SF have been doing Japan-related activities and tying Japan-related ties. I wouldn't be surprised if there had been such an event as far back as 100 or 150 years ago in San Francisco.

Still, it was really fun to get to take part in the wider body of events/activities of Japanese New York beyond our insular and somewhat isolated Japan Society. Between this, Japan Day, and a small handful of other events, in aggregate one can finally start to feel involved and active, a member of a community that's otherwise everpresent but difficult to break into.

Thanks to Japan Society for making these photos available.

Years later, my old "friend" comes to visit. My teenage children are scandalized and rude, but my wife finds a soul mate, a fellow healer, a spiritual sister. "I love Marion," Kathleen admonishes my rude children, who find my hospitality to an "ex" inappropriate. Change is a constant, no doubt, and the more things change (it's said) the more they stay the same?

Some things can't be understood and don't need to be explained. Hanging on the wall, on the left, a child's art from church proclaims, "God's Love is always with us" hanging from a coathanger, with a mobile of various faces. Enough answer for me.

This shot (obviously a blowup from photo of the whole diner) may look like a table full of smiling girls, but they look suspiciously like people who have just enjoyed a good laugh at the expense of the guy in the parking lot with the camera.

I can prove nothing. I only noticed these faces when I got back home and dumped my pictures. Truthfully, I was not the victim of any sort of overt abuse or giggling inside the diner.

Still: one should always be vigilant against the everpresent invisible menace of Mean Girls. They mingle unseen among the rest of the good, decent, and kindhearted members of their proud and wonderful gender, and they only reveal their true colors when they grab your clothes and run away laughing and you suddenly wonder if she ever really intended to streak across the football field with you during the homecoming game.

Warm Love

"Look at the ivy on the cold clinging wall

Look at the flowers and the green grass so tall

It’s not a matter of when push comes to shove

It’s just an hour on the wings of a dove

I dig it when you’re fancy dressed up in lace

I dig it when you have a smile on your face

This inspiration’s got to be on the flow

This invitation’s got to see it and know

It’s just warm love

It’s just warm love

And it’s everpresent everywhere

And it’s everpresent everywhere

That warm love

To the country I’m going

Lay and laugh in the sun

You can bring, bring your guitar along

We’ll sing some songs, we’ll have some fun

The sky is crying and it’s time to go home

And we shall hurry to the car from the foam

Sit by the fire and dry out our wet clothes

It’s raining outside from the skies up above

Inside it’s warm love

Inside it’s warm love

And it’s everpresent everywhere

And it’s everpresent everywhere

Warm love

Warm love"

The everpresent fence. If someone was to actually get out of a building or a contained area it was said that they "eloped" and security was dispatched to bring them back.

The everpresent kids peddling their wares. This group hung around us as we awaited the van back to the hotel just outside of Angkor Wat. It is amazing to see kids act the same no matter the nationality or wealth status...they just enjoy having fun. Truth be told, I have more postcards than I could ever write!

After the great flood from 1953 when 1835 people died, Holland deceided to protect the inland from the stormy Northsea.

The project was called 'Deltawerken' and consisted of an ingenious system of milelong dikes and sluices between the islands and was finished in 1986.
