For those of you who may want to pursue Primrose Moths, this is the Evening Primrose plant that hosts them. We found some lovely, hardy ones a short drive from my home in Columbia County, New York, USA & we went to visit them today, August 7, 2011, for the second time.

...through our woods. I just recieved today; a mirrorless Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3, micro 4/3 camera body. First attempt using it; I took this 2 image panoramic shot with a Minolta MD 50mm f/1.7 lens & Fotasy MD-M4/3 lens adapter.
This photograph clearly demonstrates the amount of structure and work that was involved in almost every good Edwardian evening gown.
The boned underbodice was treated like a framework, onto which the various outer layers of the bodice were (mostly) hand-sewn. For this reason I refer to Edwardian gowns as architectural, not in the sense that their outward appearance was stiff or rigid like the earlier Victorian fashions, but because they were built up, layer by layer, in the way we think of a building being constructed. This innermost layer, the framing, was absolutely essential if the outer garment was to fit and drape properly. Most of the weight of Edwardian gowns was in the voluminous skirts, often with a heavy load of embellishment that could not have been hung from a simple fabric waistband without drooping or splitting. Note also the 4 fitting darts at the front that help to mould the fit of the underbodice above the boning. This created a smooth and secure underpinning for the diaphanous chiffon guimpe.
And of course below the structure of the gown itself was worn a chemise, a heavily boned corset, a corset cover and a petticoat! The outer impression of fluidity, lightness and softness in Edwardian design was essentially a sham!!

A special invite from Don to view some Evening Grosbeaks, Pine Grosbeaks, and Common Redpolls at an acreage SE of Tomahawk.
It was a fruitful trip. Not only did I get to see these beautiful birds (Thanks Don!), I also found an owl, several Bald Eagles, and two Coyotes.

The Saturday Evening Post has enjoyed everlasting fame for showcasing the art of Norman Rockwell and his portrayal of small-town America at its kindly best. The original magazine ceased publication in 1969, but owners Curtis Publishing has lately revived the title, mining its archives for special editions. I picked up this copy that looked at the early days of American motoring. The period car ads are fascinating. A great buy for $12.99. The cover features a La Salle.
