Based on the concept that I designed the band's logo, of each show be a place where the public can enter and help themselves with good music, my proposal for this essay was to develop the Groove a la Carte Club. Because of that, I chose the noir style. Lights, location, make up, expressions, everything was set up to achieve this aesthetic. For the location, I searched a closed environment with little enlightenment. Luckyly I found a snooker bar that was really everything I had imagined. I worked with Lucia Ferreira, a makeup designer, and the assistant Gabrielle Moreira. One of the funniest parts of the project was certainly the study I did about the noir language. I watched several films, from "The Lady from Shanghai" to the more recent ones, as "The Black Dalia." One of the challenges was to apply the noir style to colors, since most of the material is black and white.

Optei pelo clima noir. Luzes, locação, maquiagem, expressões, tudo foi pensado e criado visando alcançar essa estética. Para ambientá-lo, busquei um ambiente fechado com pouca iluminação. Tive a felicidade de encontrar uma sala de sinuca que realmente era tudo o que havia imaginado. Tive a sorte de trabalhar com a maquiadora Lúcia Ferreira, além de ter Gabrielle Moreira ao meu lado, como assistente. Uma das partes mais divertidas do projeto certamente foi o estudo que fiz sobre o noir, sendo "obrigado" (risos) a assistir diversos filmes, de "A Dama de Shangai" até mais recentes como "A Dália Negra". Um dos desafios foi aplicar o estilo com o uso de cores, já que a maioria do material que temos de referência é preto e branco.

This was my photo essay project for Photography II at a local community college. The assigned subject was Veggies in Close by Window Light.
I shot all pictures with Exposure Bracketing with continuous shooting mode turned on (it would shoot 3 pictures then stop), so that I could pick the best exposure for the particular subject.
I got this idea off of Flickr, but liked the background black, instead of white on the picture I found. A bit tricky to get the exposure right on this one.
More student work. This student is writing an essay about karma. She is remarkably visual learner, so the best way for her to plan is stick figures and flow charts. The essay is shaping up very nicely.

“In December 1951, LIFE published one of the most extraordinary photo essays ever to appear in the magazine. Across a dozen pages and featuring more than 20 of the great W. Eugene Smith’ pictures, the story of a tireless South Carolina nurse and midwife named Maude Callen opened a window on a world that, surely, countless LIFE readers had never seen — and, perhaps, had never even imagined. Working in the rural South in the 1950s, in “an area of some 400 square miles veined with muddy roads,” as LIFE put it, Callen served as “doctor, dietician, psychologist, bail-goer and friend” to thousands of poor (most of them desperately poor) patients — only two percent of whom were white.”

So what this picture shows is a girl who is an angel, with a wound on her arm, and she seems to be crying while in the snow, fallen. This tells me that this angel has been kicked out of heaven for whatever reason. Maybe she got into a fight because there is a wound on her right shoulder/arm. Her eyes look soulless while she’s crying. The girl might have lost hope and is in depression.Which is another thing, most people are the “Angels” and others are the “Devils” in our society. Sadly, most of the pure angels in society are the ones that are hurt the most. They loose hope, “the light in the dark tunnel”, and go into depression and cutting of the wrist or even neck.
Maybe loosing a loved one or a hard and hurtful break-up could put most people into that state. Snow usually shows lonely-ness and the soft crying of heaven. For others it’s hope and freedom in there minds’ eye. She looks to have one wing, the other might have been torn off or is just lying in the snow, whatever it may be she is still on the ground crying. Sure heaven may be a peaceful and happy place, but from what I’ve seen in TV shows and anime, you need to do something in order to pay for the sins you have made. Most of the time it’s from doing something you should never have done, like doing something sexual or making fun of the lord in heaven that most people know. Most people would say that seeing stuff like this is beautiful, when really they might not be seeing the sadness behind that beauty.
It’s mostly mental when it comes to the angels and snow. They are symbols of other meanings. Angel’s usually represent hope and peace because they come from up above. Snow is beautiful yes, but seeing how most people take the picture or draw them like this picture, it shows lonely-ness. White is another symbol too, some people don’t see it but it shows pure-ness. Like not having your first kiss, not had sex yet, or not doing something bad. but that white is ruined with blood, her bandages are soaking up blood, meaning it wasn’t too long ago that she was hurt and ruined. Blood sometimes shows death and destruction.
Just like a heart, the heart is what keeps us alive, but it’s also destructive when it comes to emotions. We feel certain emotions when we don’t want to, and the beating pain when it comes to loosing something or someone hurts so much that you would want to rip your heart out of your chest. Also when someone shoots you in the chest, the heart, your dead instantly. The color red on the other hand, can represent a couple of things in different ways. Like a red rose can show love, but a bloody rose shows the killing of the mate. A red string tied to two different people on the pinky, shows destined love. Red on the video game screen, shows that your game character has died. Red and the color green represent the holiday Christmas, and Santa Claws since he
wears red and white. So to wrap things up, fallen angels in the snow, represent sadness, especially when they are crying and hurt.
