The North Atlantic Aerosols and Marine Ecosystems Study (NAAMES) is a five year investigation to resolve key processes controlling ocean system function, their influences on atmospheric aerosols and clouds and their implications for climate.

Michael Starobin joined the NAAMES field campaign on behalf of Earth Expeditions and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Office of Communications. He presented stories about the important, multi-disciplinary research being conducted by the NAAMES team, with an eye towards future missions on the NASA drawing board. The sow brown bear, weighing in at roughly 700 pounds was standing in the foaming icy waters of the falls of an Alaskan coastal river transfixed upon unseen motions in the water below her. Suddenly, she rapidly danced about, dipped her head in the water and came out with a 12 pound chum salmon in her jaws. The sudden motion and the new flapping of the salmon drew the attention of an even larger boar brown bear. He lunged at the sow and she took off at a sprint. She ran across a series of boulders separating various channels of the river to a game trail that led to her desired cover to hide from the boar and eat her fish in peace. The only problem, I was seated in the middle of that trail; I stood up to announce my presence to the rapidly approaching bear. By the time I made it to my feet, she was a mere 3 feet away. Traditional myth has me in a very bad place; however, a most amazing thing happened. She skidded to a stop, looked up at me with soft brown eyes and a submissive expression that seemed to suggest, “sorry to bother you”. Then she looked at my feet and slowly eased around me close enough to hear her breath. Once by me she continued her retreat into the underbrush.

While this may sound like the start of a thriller of some amazing Alaskan Bear tale or that I might be the luckiest guy around, it is McNeil River in Alaska. The State of Alaska has, for over 30 years, taken up to 10 tourists a day to the falls to observe the politics of the bears at the falls jockeying for position at the best fishing locations and has never had an injury caused by a bear, according to Larry Aumiller, one of our guides at McNeil River. He did tell of some who had heart trouble and had to be flown out. From the heart rate that I encountered while face to face with that sow, I found the heart trouble part of the story easy to believe. However, at the end of our 4 days, with similar encounters happening several times a day, I came to also believe the bear part of the story.

While many creeks and rivers in Alaska have salmon, not many have the combination of salmon and falls that concentrate the salmon such that the bears are better enabled to catch salmon that have not spawned yet. Salmon entering fresh water cease eating and undergo changes to enable them to spawn but also signaling their death as they commence living on their stores of energy in fat and muscle rendering them less nutritious. McNeil River and Mikfik Creek flow into McNeil Lagoon, a tidal estuary, which is separated by a spit of sand from Cook Inlet. Within a mile or so of the lagoon, both drainages have a small set of falls that impede the annual migration of salmon following their own cycles to come back to the stream of their birth to mate and die. The salmon are slowed by the falls, gathering in the pools directly beneath, and are vulnerable to being caught by the bears. The run of red salmon begins in June at Mikfik Creek. As a result, June visitors to McNeil River State Park are taken to the falls of Mikfik Creek to see its spectacle of bears. However, the stream, the falls and the salmon run are all smaller; therefore, Mikfik never gets the concentration of bears that occurs in July when the red salmon run wanes and the run of chum salmon begins on McNeil River. In July, visitors are treated to the largest concentration of bears in the world fishing for spawning chums. In August, after the chums stop returning, the bears begin fishing below the falls for the spawned out chums.

My own personal McNeil experience actually started some 10 years ago when my wife convinced me to move to Fairbanks, Alaska. Once here, we started on a quest to see Alaska, which has taken us from the northern most point at Point Barrow, to the southern temperate rain forests. One place that hit her radar early was McNeil River. Unfortunately, McNeil is not a place you make reservations and go. The popularity of the place and the need to keep the groups small has led to the institution of a lottery for selection of the 180 or so people that get to go each summer. Every year, a month or so after we sent in our application we would get a letter thanking us for the $50 application fee and advising us that we did not get to go. This year, when the time came to submit our application the duty of sending in our annual contribution to the State Game and Fish department fell to me. I went directly to the dates with the lowest chance of a permit and the highest numbers of bears. After all if you win the lottery, you want to win big – right? Well, I won big and we were granted the opportunity to go to McNeil in July.

In July we were off to Homer to connect with Beluga Air, one of the charter operators flying to McNeil. Our 3:00 pm departure from Homer greeted us with blue skies, warm temperatures and no wind. The one hour and fifteen minute flight to McNeil Lagoon was wonderful: we noted two humpbacks and a pod of dolphins in Cook Inlet and then were greeted with wonderful views of Augustine Volcano. As we approached the shoreline at a distance of 10 miles or so, I could see two drainages and the one to the right had falls; as I looked closer, the falls had spots in it. Bears! Lot’s of em. The approach to land at the lagoon took us right over the falls and we could see the gravel viewing pads as well as 20 or so bears all within close proximity of the viewing pad. My excitement level was now pretty high.

After landing, we had to lug our gear across the spit and up to the campground, I was now glad we were limited to 75# apiece. Once we had relocated our stuff, we were given a half hour orientation on the issues of the campground at McNeil. Most instruction, of course, centered on the bears and the fact that for 30 years the staff at McNeil have been habituating the bears to the presence of humans so they know what to expect and avoid confrontation. The rule that surprised me the most was: outside the alders that make up the campground is bear territory so give the bears the right of way; inside the alders is human territory so step forward toward the bears, shout, throw rocks, do whatever it takes to convince the bear he is in human territory. We pitched our tent, stored our food and toiletries in the cook shack and went for a walk on the spit. We saw 10 bears fishing in the lagoon (at low tide the lagoon empties and McNeil River and Mikfik creek flow thru the area), and another 5 bears clamming in the mud flats. I took lots of photos with the closest bear at a range of 200 yards or so. Little did I know that the next night I would waste no frames on bears so far away.

Our first close bear encounter happened early the next morning, a sow and 3 cubs came into camp and were startled by a fellow visitor, who was up early. Unfortunately she spooked all 4 bears into my tent site. I quickly awoke to the sound of thundering paws, lots of woofing and barking, and my tent rapidly shaking from two bears on each side of my tent brushing it as they ran past. Needless to say, my adrenaline levels were sufficiently high that further sleep was out of the question, so I took a walk on the spit and was greeted with a wondrous sunrise with Mt. Saint Augustine Volcano in the foreground. It was pretty enough, that I was almost ready to forgive the rude awakening.

Each day about 10 am, we launched from the campground: 8 novice tourists and our Fish and Game guide for the day. It was explained that bear activity generally picks up in the afternoon, and the bears are most active from 3 pm to 10 pm, and that the actual departure is dependent on the tides. We were fortunate the tide was out so we could walk across the lagoon in the morning and then the small open boat from the campground would come back at high tide to give us a ride back across the lagoon at our return.

Soon it was clear we were in the realm of bears. On our first day, we saw the sow and three cubs of my morning encounter just outside the alders that line the camp. Each day as we approached the base of Mikfik creek, we saw a new form of combat fishing: in a short turn of the creek 20 bears were fishing for the dwindling red salmon run that goes into Mikfik. In fact on the second day we noted approximately 30 bears while standing in the middle of the lagoon.

On the opposite side of the lagoon the trail heads to the high ground between the two drainages. On the second day we watched as a sow with 3 spring cubs went up our trail. We cautiously worked our way up the trail looking for the bears and as we got to the top of the rise we found them. However, as we watched, a boar appeared close to the sow. Our guide noted that we were standing on her only good escape path and suggested that we move a few feet off of the trail. Soon I was reminded of the sound of thundering paws and woofing as the sow and three cubs ran past us. As the bears approached, I was snapping pictures furiously, but as the bears filled my viewscreen thoughts of self preservation prevailed and I looked up from my camera. “Keep shooting!”, the guide intoned “you are safe”. So I started shooting once again.

Another mile on the trail in tall wildflowers and soon the air was filled with of the sound of rushing water. We came to the edge of a small canyon and got our first views of the falls with 10 or so bears fishing, and several sleeping either on the gravel viewing pad or on the trail to the pad. Each day as we slowly moved toward the pad, the bears dispersed to let us through. Then our 10 hours of uninterrupted viewing began. We had bears to the right of us, bears to the left of us, bears everywhere. In fact at the height of our best day we had 33 bears within 50 feet of our location. At one point a bear seemed interested in our packs and had walked to the rear of the pad. While it seemed silly, our guide advised that we just move a camp chair between the bear and our pack. Obviously a 1000# bear should have no trouble swatting away a 3 pound chair, but the sudden introduction of the strange object caused the bear to immediately stop its approach and back away with only a grunt for its objection. All sorts of bear activity surrounded us: feeding, fighting for choice spots, mating, playing juveniles. For me, with an interest in bears, it overwhelmed my senses.

Then almost as soon as it would begin, our 10 hours at the pad were done and it was time to retreat back to the camp and a wonderful dinner of freeze dried stroganoff, amazing how good something so bland can taste so good when you are cold and hungry. Each day gave me a new insight to bears. The bears don’t come with bad habits; we teach them bad habits. If we are neither a threat nor a source of food, we are like the seagulls; we are there but not worth worrying about and they will conduct their business without regard to our presence. This been proven by the experiences of the last 30 years that Fish and Game employees have been taking visitors to McNeil Falls.

This spectacle of nature, as wondrous as it was, is a spectacle that is presently under stress, some political and some environmental. The maximum numbers of bears found at the fall just 10 years ago numbered in the 60’s while today the numbers peak in the mid to low 30’s. Lower runs of salmon are the suspected cause and research continues. Also, in the spring of 2006 the Alaska Board of Game voted to open the areas directly south of McNeil to hunting in the 2007 season in the face of an overwhelming majority of testimony and further advised that they were to consider a proposal to allow hunting within the preserve in 2007. Fortunately, a very strong public campaign directed at the Governor’s office and the Board of Game caused a reversal of the decision in 2006, so there is not to be hunting in the areas surrounding McNeil, however, the Board of Game is comprised completely by those with hunting interests in mind so they bear continued monitoring. So there is an uncertain future for the bears of McNeil River. I hope that sanity and the salmon will return and the bears will regain their number and retain their indifference to our presence, so when my next successful lottery pick occurs I will once again be overwhelmed by bears.

On our last day of visiting the falls, we were accompanied by a gentleman from Talkeetna, Alaska and his 16 year old daughter. Watching the bears with the infectious enthusiasm of youth only served to heighten the wonder of my own experience. I hope the we will have the wisdom to help this spectacle survive to allow the 16 year old to share the wonder of the bears of McNeil with her children in the future in the same fashion that she has now done with her father.

I feel obliged to say that you shouldn't try this at home with your bears. McNeil is a place where human contact has been controlled for the last 30 years and these bears have not had negative or postive contact with humans and they have been habituated to our presence. Anyone whose first encounter with bears is McNeil will not learn the distance that one should keep from bears that might see us as a threat or food and meet with an unfortnate experience.

SKETCHED HERE IS A PASSING GLANCE OF A MEMORY OF TIMES PAST: A TYPICAL SEASIDE TOWN IN 1960S SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. IT COULD BE SANTA MONICA, HERMOSA BEACH, REDONDO BEACH, MANHATTAN BEACH OR ANY OTHER SMALL BEACH COMMUNITY BETWEEN LA JOLLA AND SANTA BARBARA. "You could close your eyes when entering the town, open them once downtown and never really know which one you were in," stated Bud Frye, a retired desk clerk who has worked every hotel desk up and down the west coast. "It's not a bad thing," Bud continued, "what I am trying to say is that they all looked just about the same. There was the surf shop, the suds shop, the laundry mat, several small bars like the old Passport Inn in Manhattan Beach," he continued, his voice trailing into a low whisper as though he was lost in another time and place, a place like the west coast in the 60s. Snapping back to the present, Bud chuckled and shook his head. "Yes, that old Passport Inn--that was the place that rocked, a cool bar where the gals just kept coming in from the hot sandy beach and turning on the charm like crazy. Man, those were the days. We played darts, drank pitcher after pitcher, all the while bare-footed with the floor so covered with sand we sometimes thought we could feel the surf on our feet. Oh, for sure. I made a visual essay on St. Marks Place. A street in Seba York well known for its punk oriented vibe. I recorded all the drawings on a Sketchbook, and now I want to share with you guys my point of view about that. I went to St. Marks for 3 months covering the late summer and fall of 2012. At first I was very amazed that such place existed, because in Chapinero, my neighborhood in Colombia, we don't have a place like that. But with the passing of days, I began to realize that, as happens with all the things in Seba York, the Vibe is Half real-Half Tourist Attraction. I mean, the place is like really aggressive-cool-urban decay- looking, and harsh, but the shops are really expensive, the food places are fancy and expensive, and even there are very well established punk souvenirs shops. Welcome to Punk Capitalism.

Quiero compartirles mi registro, a manera de ensayo visual de mi experiencia en St. Marks Place (Pronunciado Sen-t-Moarks-Pleiss) Durante los tres meses que abarcaron el final del verano y el otoño del 2012, me la pasé dibujando en esta calle famosa por su estética Punk, y su onda Downtownera. Al principio estaba fascinado por la gente que veía y por la posibilidad de pensar que un lugar así existiese. Sobre todo porque en Chapinero no hay un lugar así, entonces me maravillaba todo. Con el paso del tiempo, me di cuenta que la dinámica del lugar, al igual que muchas de las cosas en Seba York, son mitad real y mitad construcción turistíca, es decir, para que uno las observe como visitante y se maraville de ellas. As made famous for generations of KSA students by Doug Graf's lectures (and his essay "World On A String"), Vaux-le-Vicomte is not merely a shockingly indulgent chateau-and-garden piece. Nor is it just the story of Louis XIV's finance minister (Nicholas Fouquet), who was thrown in jail shortly after the grand opening when Le Roi suspected his chief accountant of dipping into the royal coffers to finance the project. No, it is a "techno-fiction," the employment of cutting-edge technology to elaborate and discuss present, past, and future cosmologies. The technologies are Renaissance perspective and the emergence of landscape manipulation as an art form, in particular the ha-ha - the device of using slightly inclined planes of landscape to hide features behind each other. As you move through the gardens, their extents and contents seem to shift.

For example: at the original point of arrival (not pictured, as it is now difficult to access), the chateau appears to be united with two flanking buildings - as you get closer, it becomes apparent that it's a freestanding building. From the point of view of this picture, it appears to be standing on solid ground - but as you'll see in the next frame, it's surrounded by a moat, floating in a tray. These tricks become much more impressive (and exhausting) in the garden, where it always seems like you're just about to reach the terminal point of a hill capped by a statue. But it keeps slipping away, and meanwhile the chateau keeps following you, since the distance you've already crossed also gets progressively erased.

So what's the point? To Doug - and I apologize for mangling this through paraphrasing and editing - the whole thing articulates contrasting visions of the universe, the wilderness world of the gods (which is timeless) and the garden world of man (which is timed). The timed-ness of man's world is made clear by the fact that when you reach the statue and look back, all the gardens stand clearly revealed - except for the grotto level, which belonged to the supernatural gods' world anyway - and the chateau has slipped back into the engaged relationship with the flanking buildings. The reset button on a giant "arcade game" (Doug's phrase) has been pressed and the machine is primed to start over again. The gardens have a beginning and end, animated by Jupiter (who appears in a fresco in the round pavilion at the back of the chateau - where the gardens start) and Hercules (whose statue stands at the edge between garden and wilderness).

Doug's argument is, of course, considerably more elaborate and detailed, but I have passed on my copy of The Underground Graf Texts to the next interested party, following a sacred tradition, so I can't really quote him at length....

Un mois de préparation, cinq jours de travaux, 2800 trous percés et 342 kilos [note] d’explosifs, plus de sept kilomètres de fils électriques pour une implosion de quatre secondes. La seconde barre disparaîtra en avril 1991. Le temps de la vider de ses 150 locataires restants. Et la première Biscotte s’est faite craquante à souhait, vendredi sur le coup de 15h, avec une trentaine de minutes de retard – un fil de mise à feu dérangé par le vent puis le speaker s’emmêlant dans son compte à rebours – mais sans répandre de miettes à côté : pas une vitre brisée à proximité, intact aussi l’immeuble le plus proche distant de douze mètres. Mal, souvent, mais on y vit. Ou on y vivait… Comme on peut vivre à un millier dans un village vertical. Parce que c’était çà, les Biscottes. Un bon millier de personnes dans un village sans mairie, où les rues étaient des couloirs parfois plus sales que les artères de la ville après la braderie. Un village où la Grand-Place était le hall d’entrée, les ascenseurs des urinoirs, les concierges des maires-gendarmes-assistantes sociales-garde-champêtres-dame pipi… Chaque année, pendant les vacances, quand l’actualité et le journal sont aussi creux que l’imagination des urbanistes des années 60, on allait y faire un tour, aux Biscottes. Et à grands coups de photos, on effectuait l’état des lieux. Un inventaire parfois à la limite du supportable mais qui avait le mérite, au moins sur le papier, d’être privé de l’odeur. Ils ont pourtant tout essayé. Et à la rédaction, on se rappelle de l’acharnement avec lequel les responsables de la S.L.E nous envoyaient des lettres de plus en plus sèches, parce que dans ces colonnes nous nous obstinions à écrire " Biscottes " là où ils auraient voulu lire " Résidence Sud ", nouveau nom de baptême hérité de la réhabilitation… Une réhabilitation de l’enfer… Aujourd’hui, même eux ont abandonné. Sur les cartons d’invitation envoyés pour assister à l’implosion, on a réhabilité le symbole : on parle définitivement des Biscottes. Et boum l’enfer ! Ce ne sont plus les " Résidences Sud " qu’on dynamite mais bien les Biscottes qu’on n’a pas su mettre au régime sensuel. Il aura carrément fallu faire exploser le mythe pour pouvoir enfin l’anéantir. Espérons seulement qu’en émiettant les Biscottes, on n’aura pas simplement brisé le thermomètre en croyant faire tomber la température des flammes de l’enfer…" L’architecte effondré. En 1962, Jean Pierre Secq était un architecte heureux. Les deux immeubles de 283 logements chacun, qu’il avait dessinés, faisaient l’unanimité. Certains trouvaient bien que les façades avaient un peu l’air d’avoir été tracées à la règle par un amateur de mots croisés mais tout le monde s’accordait sur la qualité des logements spacieux et ensoleillés. En 1989, Jean Pierre Secq est effondré. Venu la veille avec une caméra, l’architecte lillois avait la rage au cœur en pensant à cette implosion, " Solution radicale prise pour cacher les incompétences. L’erreur, c’est les gens qu’on a mis là-dedans, et puis, regardez un peu ce qu’il y a autour, ces barbelés, ces clôtures, ces immeubles : c’est tout çà qu’il aurait fallu raser en priorité ! " Le jugement est dur mais " c’est un peu de soi qui fiche le camp. En 1962, ces immeubles, c’était ce qu’il y avait de mieux, même si ça ne répond plus tout à fait à ce qu’on attend aujourd’hui. "Et pourtant, ni les Biscottes, ni le Sud, ne connaissaient alors, en 1962, le mal-vivre. Dès 1962, les dix huit étages de chacun des bâtiments, cinq cent soixante-six logements, vastes, à double exposition et balcons, étaient peuplés de bourgeois qui se sentaient l’âme et l’envie de dominer Lille, d’habiter le neuf et de bâtir, peut-être, un nouvel art de vivre. Ils s’étaient éloignés du beffroi. Ils changeaient d’habits dans des logements comme on n’en fait plus ! On y trouvait des fonctionnaires et même des élus, un général d’armée et un commandant de gendarmerie. A eux les grands espaces dans les appartements que la spéculation foncière et immobilière ne permet plus aujourd’hui. Il n’aura pas fallu dix ans pour s’apercevoir que les Biscottes n’avaient plus d’âmes ou plutôt qu’elles étaient devenues les âmes damnées de la ville.

Souvenirs, souvenirs. Martine a fait cinq cents bornes pour assister à l’enterrement de la Biscotte. Elle est venue de Paris pour çà. Normal. C’est un peu sa Biscotte. Elle y a travaillé dix ans, de 76 à 86. Elle y a même rencontré son mari. Dix ans à naviguer entre la rue de la Seine et de la rue du Rhin comme assistante sociale. Les Biscottes c’était son champ d’action, presque son outil de travail. Dix ans à écouter les détresses dans les appartements, à tenter vaille que vaille de panser les plaies de la crise. Dix ans dans les étages, les cages d’escaliers, les ascenseurs et les courants d’air. Dix ans de permanence, de dossiers à débrouiller, d’habitants à aider plutôt qu’à assister. Une ancienne combattante pour deux sous, Martine ne regrette rien… Un gâchis, ces logements qui partent en miettes ? "Ce n’est pas un gâchis et ça permet d’éviter que ce type d’erreur ne se reproduise" explique Martine. La démolition, elle en avait déjà entendu parler il y a une dizaine d’années. Mais à l’époque le sujet était un peu tabou : cela ne s’était pas encore fait ailleurs, et puis, il n’y avait pas de crédits. C’est l’espoir de pratiquer un travail social différent, plus collectif, plus communautaire qui l’avait attirée là en 76, juste après ses études. Un premier poste en première ligne. Une sacrée panique. La grande échelle des pompiers qui ne dépassait pas le neuvième étage. On s’était déjà dit à l’époque que ces Biscottes étaient des barres infernales. Et pour tenter de renverser la vapeur, on s’était lancé dans des réhabilitations en série.

Qui fera un jour l’addition des milliards de centimes dépensés avant d’en arriver au constat d’échec ? Martine a connu tout cela. La réhabilitation du temps de la droite avec le label " Habitat et vie sociale " sous Giscard. Et la réhabilitation du temps de la gauche baptisée " Développement social des quartiers " sous Mitterrand. Elle a aussi connu la progressive et inexorable dégradation générale. Une sorte de spirale dont elle démonte le mécanisme. " C’était l’un des rares groupes avec des F5 et des F6 et l’on y a relogé des familles nombreuses à problèmes qui ont fait fuir les autres. Les loyers, les impôts locaux étaient relativement chers et la population qui pouvait se payer autre chose est allée voir ailleurs. Le phénomène s’est aggravé avec l’APL qui a pratiquement fait doubler le loyer de ceux qui n’y avaient pas droit et qui ont fui. Paradoxalement, la situation s’est dégradée fortement pendant les travaux de réhabilitation. C’était le chantier. C’est devenu le ghetto ! " Martine faisait partie des bataillons de travailleurs sociaux qui arpentaient le secteur. Le bilan n’est pas tout noir. Il y avait une volonté d’associer la population, de travailler en équipes avec les élus, les associations… Effet pervers de l’APL, précarisation de la population, montée des chômeurs en fin de droit. " Il ne suffisait pas de rénover le bâti pour que les choses se modifient " constate Martine … Avec le recul les bons souvenirs : " Je n’ai jamais travaillé dans la monotonie. On sentait une violence latente mais pas d’insécurité. Et puis il y avait un esprit des Biscottes, des réseaux de solidarité entre les gens. " Pour Martine, la page des Biscottes ne sera jamais complètement tournée.Quand Pierre Mauroy est venu serrer les mains des personnalités dans la tribune officielle, il lui a fallu jouer un rôle inattendu, celui d’épaule compatissante. La petite dame pleurait ses souvenirs oubliés à l’intérieur. Trop tard pour courir les récupérer au quatrième étage, là où elle a été heureuse malgré tout ce qu’on dit et ce qu’on croit." C’est dommage de le démolir, ils auraient pu faire autre chose, améliorer l’immeuble, y installer une équipe de gardiennage. Ce n’était pas aussi invivable qu’on le disait, au contraire, la vie était très agréable aux Biscottes. Et pourquoi ce terme de Biscottes d’ailleurs ? Je ne l’ai jamais aimé " plaide Madame Marquis. Mère de deux enfants, mariée, elle a été parmi les derniers à quitter l’immeuble pour se retrouver quelques dizaines de mètres plus loin, rue du Rhône. " Mais là, ce n’est pas pareil. C’est chacun pour soi. Et puis maintenant j’ai un jardin mais les gens des étages au-dessus n’arrêtent pas de jeter n’importe quoi par les fenêtres. Tandis que là j’étais heureuse." Et que peut un petit bout de femme en baskets contre des années de vandalisme et contre 511 kg de dynamite ?Vu d’en face, dans la tranche qui attendra la démolition. Huitième étage. La locataire agrippe la porte d’ascenseur : les poignées ont été délestées par la cambriole ordinaire. Elle y habite depuis toujours ou presque avec ses deux filles. " Mais dans l’état que c’est aujourd’hui, çà devrait être gratuit." Elle peste la petite dame qui a connu l’invasion de la Pologne : " C’est triste, c’est la Pologne en 40." Elle se plaint, depuis que le maire a démoli Wazemmes, il a ramené la racaille par ici. Madame M**** qui grinche, qui rouspète : " Aux Biscottes, il y avait des riches avant et ils (entendez les immigrés) venaient voler les riches. Il n’y a plus que les pauvres et ils (les mêmes) continuent de les voler." -

- 14h30. Les abords du faubourg d’Arras sont bondés : dans le parc Tudor, dans les rues voisines où la circulation est interdite, c’est un énorme attroupement. Rue Gambetta on est monté sur les toits et pas une fenêtre qui ne soit garnie de deux ou trois personnes

- 14h45. La foule grossit en s’impatientant. On se passe les cartes postales représentant les Biscottes en couleurs au dos desquelles la société de démolition donnait le rendez-vous. Ils ont pourtant bien marqué 14h30, il y a sûrement quelque chose qui ne va pas.

Les commentaires vont bon train, les curieux se pressent, certains se lassent et s’en retournent.

- 15h. Une clameur, au loin, des coups de sifflets et puis un énorme bang rappelant le franchissement du mur du son par un avion ; en une seconde l’immeuble est à terre. Et c’est là que commence le spectacle.

Un énorme nuage de poussière noir et gris se développe, s’engouffre dans la rue Gambetta tout en obscurcissant le ciel. Il se déroule lentement tandis que les spectateurs massés le long du faubourg d’Arras s’aperçoivent que s’ils ont bien vu la démolition, ils vont maintenant en payer le prix.Un mouvement de foule impressionnant se met en branle : on court à toute vitesse pour ne pas se faire rattraper par le nuage : peine perdue ! Les spectateurs juchés sur les toits descendent des échelles à toute vitesse, sans illusion. Les plus chanceux sont ceux qui ont assisté à la démolition installés aux fenêtres. Il leur suffit de les refermer vivement et de laisser passer deux à trois minutes pour voir défiler dans la rue des mannequins grisâtres s’époussetant du mieux qu’ils le peuvent et, finalement, riant tout de même de la mésaventure. Ils en seront quittes pour un bon shampoing et un nettoyage des vêtements. Plus inconscientes, ces deux jeunes mamans venues avec des bébés dans le landau qui hurlent sous la poussière…

- 15h05. L’espace se dégage en même temps que les voitures dont les lave-glaces ont bien du mal à venir à bout de l’épaisse couche recouvrant les pare-brises ! Bref, quand une biscotte s’émiette, on a intérêt à connaître le sens du vent. "

Pour Dominique Duprez, sociologue chercheur au CNRS, la destruction des barres n’a pas été suivie d’effet et les problèmes sociaux sont toujours importants. Depuis la démolition rien n’a été reconstruit. Un espace multi-sports devrait voir le jour en 2004." La Halle de glisse et l’Hôtel de police ont été réalisés récemment après l’opération Faubourg des modes. Doivent venir : la cité des Métiers et de l’Artisanat rue Abélard. Faubourg d’Arras, une opération de renouvellement urbain prévoyant la démolition de 550 logements et la construction de 600 nouveaux logements dont 30% dans le marché locatif social. Secteur Cannes - Arbrisseau nouvelles voies et démolition de 100 logements, résidencialisation de huit immeubles (1700 logements) et réhabilitation de treize immeubles (2000 logements) avec la reconstruction de 250 nouveaux logements. Friche Paindavoine, 224 logements dont 60 locatifs sociaux et 60 en accession sociale.

Il est mort le 29 septembre 20151 et a été incinéré à Auxerre Le paysagiste Jacques Simon s'est éteint le 26 septembre dernier à l'âge de 86 ans. Diplômé de Versailles en 1959, il fut sans doute l'une des figures les plus emblématiques, les plus géniales et les plus originales du paysagisme contemporain. Premier grand prix du paysage et prix du Conseil de l'Europe pour le parc de la Deule, on lui doit des principes de compositions très forts, autour du nivellement, du traitement du végétal ou de la place laissée au vide. Ses intuitions comme ses travaux ont inspiré tous les paysagistes avec lesquels il a travaillé, à commencer par Michel Corajoud ou Gilles Vexlard. On lui doit un profond renouvellement dans la composition des grands ensembles, ses réalisations -comme le parc Saint-John Perse à Reims- restant des modèles pour tous les professionnels. Jacques Simon développa également une production d'œuvres plus éphémères, attentif aux mouvements et aux transformations. Pédagogue talentueux et généreux, il le fut autant par les documents techniques et la revue qu'il publia, que par ses interventions en atelier devant plusieurs générations d'étudiants de l'école. Dans les années 1990 à l'école du Paysage de Versailles, lorsque nous entrions en première année, la première satisfaction était d'acquérir du nouveau matériel d'expression plastique. Encre, feutres, supports en grand format et sur papier calque...mais aussi découvrir des livres de notre professeur Jacques Simon : des carnets de dessins et de croquis, des photomontages découpés aux ciseaux.

En amphithéâtre lors de conférences et séances de projections de diapositives, Jacques Simon évoquait surtout sa capacité à piloter un hélicoptère. Je viens de retrouver un extrait d'un article à ce sujet..« (...) Car depuis une dizaine d'années, le Bourguignon a trouvé une solution à son imagination en bourgeonnement permanent. Jacques Simon crée ‘pour lui tout seul'. Ni commande ni concours. Mais des messages géants écrits dans les champs et seulement visibles d'avion ou d'hélicoptère. Un art éphémère et privé dont il s'amuse, les veilles de moissons, tout autour de sa ferme de Turny, dans l'Yonne.Et là, plus rien ne l'arrête. Les agriculteurs du coin ont pris l'habitude de le voir faucher des allées entières de luzerne. De l'apercevoir écraser d'interminables chemins de phacelia, un graminé californien qui existe en trois couleurs (blanc, bleu, rouge). De l'observer dans son hélicoptère photographiant le résultat. Ses messages sont des hommages ou des avertissements. L'un prévient : ‘Hé, si tu n'as plus de forêt t'es foutu.' Un autre : 'Sans les paysans, je m'emmerde. Signé : la Terre.' Même l'hiver, Jacques Simon s'adonne à cette calligraphie paysagère. (...) ».

I picked the things I took pictures of due to convenience, location, aesthetics, timeliness, and flair amongst other things. I decided to mostly take pictures due to my interests and passions. I took over 50 pictures including the ones I actually posted.

The biggest disappointment for me might easily be some of my lighting situations, though the angles were more fun to perfect. I also worry that the things I picked are not the most suiting for this assignment. The pictures made me realize that the range of things that I am actually interested in is not quite the same as it was about 4 years ago. I now identify with more things than ever.

Some of the pictures had a prototype or two, particularly the pictures involving my computer and my fight stick game controller. The fight stick controller almost also had a arcade cabinet-shaped bank next to it, but that didn't happen.

I took a picture of a fight-stick because I love video fighting games. I took a picture of myself, because I initially thought it was part of the assignment. I took a picture of a dragon statue at Sunnyvale GolfLand because I like playing miniature golf. I took a picture of a winning hand in BananaGrams because I like word games and languages. I took a picture of my computer and tablet pen, since I am a 2d computer animator in my spare time. I took a picture of my class ring since it is one of my most proud personal possessions.

A young girl who has just been accepted into one of the most prestigious art schools in North America, was over for a visit. She was to start in September and while she was waiting for her student visa to come through (she is from the US)she was cleaning stables and feeding horses. As I am listening to this young girl pour out her distress as to how she is being treated I can feel this vortex of energy building up and sucking me into it. I used to ride in the Fox Hunt with many of these people and those of their ilk. I know of what this young lady speaks. So I feel this vortex pulling at both my ankles and I’m having a real time of it keeping my coaching pants on.

I have felt the disdain of which she spoke directed towards me as I insisted on riding bareback in the “Fox Hunt” (major break with tradition) often with my hardhat on backwards as it tended to fall down on the bridge of my nose when going over jumps, thus impairing my vision. I was a particular thorn in the side to those who wore the “redcoats” but most tolerated me because of my parents who organized the scented route of the hunt utilizing our land as our neighbours. This coupled with the fact that if their well bred, dual named steeds, out of Noble Question by Kingdom Ruler refused a jump or a part of the run, I would bring my *Out of Kamloops by Truck* (see footnote) wonder horse Jerry to the head of the field and lead these horses at least two names city-slicker pampered sissies through whatever it was that was distressing them – most often it was mud. All this came to mind and much, much more as the young girl was sharing her story and I could feel the pull…BIG SUCKING WITCH ONE….and what pulled me out was“agreement creates reality which is different from the truth”. I recognized that I could not help her if I continued going into agreement with her on how horrible these people were and how victimized she was by their treatment. Another pull out of the sucking vortex – in order to help the person in front of me I had to put her FIRST. When I did that, a miracle occurred.

The sobbing, wretched girl left an aspiring artist with an amazing future ahead of her. All I did was ask her to take the viewpoint of an artist. Then I asked her if she could duplicate on canvas and in clay the features and moods of those people she was having difficulty with. She said that she could. I told her that Van Gogh swept floors and cleaned up paint for years before he picked up a brush. I asked her if she could view these people as stepping stones to her fulfilling her dream of becoming an accomplished artist by using these people as "models" - not to aspire to be like but to study as "subjects". "Yes, she answered excitedly, "yes, yes, I can!" Her face brightened even more as I asked her if she could imagine the people who were giving her a hard time now, clambering to purchase one of her works in the future, she’s an artist – she totally got the vision of that. Then I asked her if she could approach her work at the stables as part of her study to master her craft. She laughed and said, Yes! I phoned her a couple of weeks later and asked her how it was going at work, she said, “It’s great, they don’t treat me like that anymore.”

This young lady is now currently finishing up her studies at the prestigious Emily Carr Institute ofArt and Design in Vancouver, British Columbia.

*Kamloops is a city in the heart of "cattle country" in the interior of the province of British Columbia. For those of you unfamiliar with horse breeding the bloodlines are traced through dam and sire with the offspring being referred to as Out of (name of dam) By (name of sire). While the other "steeds" in the hunt were as blue blooded as their owners, Jerry was the horse version of a mutt hence my description of his bloodlines - Out of Kamloops by Truck (the means by which he was transported to the Fraser Valley in the Lower Mainland area of the province)

How I store and catalog my photo collection. My answer when a photographer ask this question on Facebook.

I've put my favorite photos on Flickr, a photo sharing service. The photos were all taken with mostly point and shoot inexpensive cameras. I've donated them to Creative Commons. Occasionally one finds its way into a publication, class project, presentation or whatever. If others can use my photos, I find it gratifying. Usually it's for small scale non profit type projects, like, say, a budget request document for a bike lane on some bridge. On rare occasions, I've received money which I consider like a donation.

My photos are arranged in albums and cross referenced by tags. I often put long descriptions with the photo to share my experiences and opinions related to the photo. This is a writing outlet, for me which I find can be therapeutic. My photos do bring quite a bit of page views. The text is searchable which makes it easy to find photos related to various things. Even if the tags don't specifically fit the search, something in the text usually does.

The bulk of my photos, that I don't think are worth sharing (duplicates and so forth), remain in digital file folders labeled by the year taken. Paper snapshots, that I took before the years of digital photography, are in my closet. My favorite ones have been scanned into the computer with some of them being uploaded to Flickr. The snapshots remain in a few boxes, or plastic sleeve pages of old photo albums.

Years ago, someone suggested I put my travel photos into albums so they would be easier to share when I visit with friends. That was a good idea, back then, but today, my sharing is on-line. Some of the old album pages are starting to deteriorate.

In the next few months, or years, I am planning to remove these many photos from the somewhat dilapidated pages and put them back in boxes. I will toss some duplicates and maybe scan a few more photos into my computer. Share a few more on Flickr after deciding I like them better than I thought before. The rest will just sit in a box or two and take up much less room than the old photo albums did.

In an effort to curb greenhouse gas emissions, the city of Bellingham is considering banning the use of natural gas for heating homes and businesses.

This is just a proposal being considered, but it's already put our town on the map. A feature article has come out in the January 5th edition of The New York Times about this proposal in Bellingham. We might be getting famous.

Natural gas is a fossil fuel and this proposal would, most likely, favor electricity over gas; for instance electric heating. I sense people cringing now as electric heating is often more expensive than gas.

I personally think this proposal is not the best idea. It seems like a somewhat desperate case of grasping at straws. It's trying to do something to address global warming when more comprehensive solutions, like carbon taxes, are needed.

Here in Washington State, people are worried about climate change, but it's still hard to get voters to pass a carbon tax. Two such proposals have recently failed at the ballot box.

Banning natural gas in favor of electricity seems like somewhat of a gimmick, to me, but it is an attempt to do something. Ironically, much of our electricity comes from natural gas. There are quite a few natural gas fired power plants including one on lower Cornwall Avenue, in Bellingham. Just switching over to electricity could still mean we are using gas if the electricity comes from gas.

Another big problem, leading to our carbon footprint, is the automobile. As with most places, people in Bellingham continue their dependence on automobiles. Most cars still run on fossil fuels. Traffic keeps increasing in Bellingham.

The big problems leading to our growing carbon footprint are increasing population and consumption. As for our growing population, I often say, "if more people were gay, world population growth would be less of a problem."

The proposal to curb use of natural gas does have some things in its favor. It might not go into effect until 2040. Given the lifespans of furnaces, these days, most folks will have likely had to replace their furnace by then anyway.

One advantage that electricity has over gas is that electricity can come from many sources. Gas has to be gas. Electricity can come from solar, wind or other green energy sources. This could further encourage the use of green energy.

This proposal advocates the use of heat pump technology. Heat pumps usually run on electricity, but they can be less expensive to operate than baseboard electric heating. Heat pumps tend to be more expensive to install, however.

Heat pumps work like a refrigerator in reverse. They move heat around. They have coils that refrigerate the ground and other areas around a building and then pump that heat inside. They work pretty good in mild climates, but on really cold days, heat pumps don't work that well. It gets much harder to pump the heat "up hill;" so to speak. Heat pump systems often use regular electric heating for backup.

Ideally, it would be great if all of our energy came from green sources. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we do have fairly green electricity because much of our power comes from dams on our rivers. Dams don't have to burn fossil fuel, but they do cause problems for salmon and other fish.

There are proposals to breach many dams on our rivers to improve the salmon habitat. This could help to save the whales that eat salmon.

Another problem with the dams is that we have pretty much tapped most of our rivers. Continued growth in energy use has to come from other sources. Some of that growth means we have expanded into using more natural gas to generate the extra power.

Wind and solar power are more ideal, but they can be expensive; at least in the short run.

Ironically, there is still a moratorium on wind turbines in most of Whatcom County. There is worry about the effects of wind farms on birds and bats. Some homeowners think wind turbines are unsightly and might cause a drop in their property values.

There are plenty of wind farms that dot the landscape in eastern Washington and they are starting to produce more of our power.

Here on the west side of the Cascades, we may seem quite narcissistic if we are worried about things like property values. Reducing carbon emissions will take some major changes in our thinking. A ban on natural gas may be just a band-aid.
