Sie gehört zwar zu den Windengewächsen und ist mit dem gewöhnlichen Erdapfel nur entfernt verwandt. Kulinarisch kann sie aber wie eine gewöhnliche Kartoffel verarbeitet und genossen werden. Daher auch der Name.

Büscherhöfen (Aus Geschichte Leichlingen)
Alte Hofschaftsbezeichnung, der Name geht auf die beiden abteilichen Deutzer Höfe an der Wupper zurück. In Büscherhöfen sollen die allerersten Erdäpfel (Kartoffeln) angebaut worden sein. Der Ackersmann Peter Thiel erhielt sie ums Jahr 1735 von einem Brabanter Fuhrmann.
Heute noch ein typisches bergisches "Gehützel" im alten Kern noch gut erhalten...

April 6. Food becomes scarcer. In the three war years, daily life has become harder and more laborious. People have long since become accustomed to obtaining food with food cards, substitutes and spare recipes: "Put only boiled potatoes and potato with peels on the table!"
From the winter of 1941-42, however, the food situation becomes precarious; normal consumers receive 1942 in addition to 2000 grams of bread, 206 grams of fat and 300 grams of meat 3 (1944: 1) kilos of potatoes a week and 2 (1943: 1) eggs a month. Fruits and vegetables are rare, special allocations of garlic, game or even coffee beans are welcomed. Also shoes, heating material and things of daily use such as sewing needles, paper and soap are in short supply - one is dependent on improvisation or on "illicit trading".
Among the most important illicit trading commodities ranked since January 1942 cigarettes. The inn and hotel business is, since not "essential to the war", gradually restricted, the Viennese must renounce the wine tavern: on May 29, 1942, the Buschenschank (wine tavern) is prohibited.
The demise of Austria without a fight with its annexation to Germany on March 13, 1938, the total Nazi seizure of power, the immediate and comprehensive persecution measures, the unprecedented propaganda campaign as well as various appealing statements by Austrian institutions and personalities (especially those of the Austrian bishops and a newspaper interview by Karl Renner ) led to the fact that a broader formation of illegal organizations against National Socialism began only in the summer and autumn of 1938.
In contrast to other occupied countries, the resistance fighters in Austria had to work in an environment penetrated by informers and fanatical regime supporters. The largest organized groups belonged to the labor movement (mainly in the industrial centers in Upper Austria) and the Catholic bourgeois camp. Within these two camps, the resistance between the Social Democrats, Communists and other left-wing groups on the one hand, and former Christian Social and Home Guard members, and monarchists and Catholics on the other. The individual resistance groups were political, ideological, religious, social, ethical and Austrian-patriot motivations shaped. The most important activity was the distribution of illegal printing works, such as slips of paper, leaflets and magazines. This was intended to break through the monopoly of opinion of the Nazi regime. The (in Austria as early as 1935/36) banned religious community "International Bible Students Association" (Jehovah's Witnesses) placed the rejection of military service at the center of its resistance. From 1942, mostly at the initiative of communists, armed resistance groups formed (mainly Slovenian partisans in southern Carinthia, group Leoben-Donawitz). Towards the end of the war, many non-partisan resistance groups formed whose activists came from different political and social camps; among other things, they wanted to prevent senseless, lossy fighting.
6. April. Lebensmittel werden knapper. In den drei Kriegsjahren ist das tägliche Leben härter und mühsamer geworden Längst hat man sich an die Essensbeschaffung mit Lebensmittelkarten, an Ersatzstoffe und an Sparrezepte gewöhnt: „Stellt nur Pellkartoffeln, Erdäpfel mit Schöler, auf den Tisch!“
Ab dem Winter 1941/42 jedoch wird die Ernährungslage prekär; Normalverbraucher erhalten 1942 neben 2000 Gramm Brot, 206 Gramm Fett und 300 Gramm Fleisch 3(1044: 1) Kilo Kartoffeln in der Woche und 2 (1943: 1) Eier im Monat. Obst und Gemüse gibt es selten, Sonderzuteilungen von Knoblauch, Wild oder gar Bohnenkaffee werden freudig begrüßt. Auch Schuhe, Heizmaterial und Dinge des täglichen Gebrauchs wie Nähnadeln, Papier und Seife sind Mangelware – man ist aufs Improvisieren oder auf „Vater Schleich“ angewiesen.
Zu den wichtigsten Schleichhandelsgütern zählen die seit Jänner 192 rationierten Zigaretten. Der Gasthaus- und Hotelbetrieb wird, da nicht „kriegswichtig“, stufenweise eingeschränkt, die Wiener müssen auf den Heurigen verzichten: mit 29.Mai 1942 wird der Buschenschank untersagt.
Der kampflose Untergang Ö. mit dem Anschluss an Deutschland am 13. 3. 1938, die totale nat.-soz. Machtergreifung, die sofortigen und umfassenden Verfolgungsmaßnahmen, die beispiellose Propaganda- kampagne sowie verschiedene anschlussfreundl. Erklärungen ö. Institutionen und Persönlichkeiten (v. a. die der ö. Bischöfe und ein Zeitungsinterview von K. Renner) führten dazu, dass eine breitere Formierung von illegalen Organisationen gegen den Nationalsozialismus erst im Sommer und Herbst 1938 begann.
Im Unterschied zu anderen besetzten Ländern hatten in Ö. die Widerstandskämpfer in einer von Denunzianten und fanat. Regimeanhängern durchsetzten Umwelt zu wirken. Die größten organisierten Gruppierungen gehörten der Arbeiterbewegung (hauptsächl. in den Ind.-Zentren in OÖ.) und dem kath.-bürgerl. Lager an. Innerhalb dieser beiden Lager verflossen im Widerstand die Grenzen zw. Sozialdemokraten, Kommunisten und anderen Linksgruppen einerseits und ehem. Christl.-Soz. und Heimwehrangehörigen sowie Monarchisten und Katholiken andererseits. Die einzelnen Widerstandsgruppen waren von polit., ideolog., religiösen, soz., ethischen und ö.-patriot. Motivationen geprägt. Wesentlichste Aktivität war die Verbreitung illegaler Druckwerke, wie Streuzettel, Flugblätter und Ztschr. Damit sollte das Meinungsmonopol des NS-Regimes durchbrochen werden. Die (in Ö. schon ab 1935/36) verbotene Glaubensgemeinschaft "Internationale Bibelforschervereinigung" (Jehovas Zeugen) stellte die Ablehnung des Wehrdiensts in den Mittelpunkt ihres Widerstands. Ab 1942 bildeten sich, meist auf Initiative von Kommunisten, bewaffnete Widerstandsgruppen (v. a. slowen. Partisanen in S-Kä., Gruppe Leoben-Donawitz). Gegen Ende des Kriegs formierten sich vielfach überparteil. Widerstandsgruppen, deren Aktivisten aus verschiedenen polit. und soz. Lagern stammten; sie wollten u. a. sinnlose, verlustreiche Kämpfe verhindern.
Es braucht das besondere Waldviertler Klima - nur so wachsen hier die besten Erdäpfel (Kartoffel) von Österreich. Und darum gibts nur im Waldviertel die einzigartigen Waldviertler Knödel in Top Qualität!

After quite some time I shot a pic especially for an assignment in our Flickr group - the week's topic is "Eyes".
And because my parents always called these buds "eyes", this is why I chose those.
And as luck goes sometimes, one of these buds seems to have eyes itself :)

Nach Europa wurde die Kartoffel vielfach wegen der schönen Blüte und des üppigen Laubes als reine Zierpflanze importiert und als seltene Pflanze in botanische Gärten aufgenommen. Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts tauchte sie in den Niederlanden, in Italien und in Burgund auf.

The idea for this project emerged gradually while I was working on various games at school. Then one day, I decided to unify my wide-ranging approaches, and I proudly presented the result: Erdapfel_2.0. Video games have long been more than just playthings for kids; as the interplay of music, 2D art, 3D art and animation, they have unquestionably arrived as an art form in their own right.

The Erdapfel (German: lit. earth apple), produced by Martin Behaim in 1492, is considered to be the oldest surviving terrestrial globe. It is constructed of a wooden ball overlaid with a map painted by Georg Glockendon.
During his visit to his native home in Nuremberg, in collaboration with Glockendon, Behaim constructed one of two globes, which he called the Erdapfel (literally, the earth apple). It conforms to an idea of a globe envisioned in 1475 by Pope Sixtus IV, but has the added improvements of meridians and an equatorial line.
The Americas are not included, as Columbus returned to Spain no sooner than March 1493. The globe shows an enlarged Eurasian continent and an empty ocean between Europe and Asia. The mythical island of Saint Brendan is included. Japan and Asian islands are disproportionately large.
The influence of the African Ptolemy, who bequeathed the world latitude and longitude, is apparent, but every attempt is made to incorporate the discoveries of the later Middle Ages (including information from the voyages of Marco Polo, among others). Aside from its fame, the Behaim Globe has numerous geographic errors, even when comparing them to discoveries of the epoch. Western Africa is incorrect, though technology at the time made such calculations difficult; the Cape Verde archipelago lies hundreds of miles out of its proper place; and the Atlantic is filled with mythological islands that were psychologically important to isolated Medieval Christendom. Japan is located only 1500 miles off the coast, and was just where Marco Polo mentioned it, placing it temptingly within sailing distance of the Canaries.
Though less navigationally accurate than the beautiful Catalonian portolani charts of the 14th century, as a scientific work it is of enormous importance; it may be the first terrestrial globe ever built, is tilted to spin at the correct angle, and represents an encyclopedia of the West's known world in the year 1492.

Saint Brendan’s Isle, also spelled St Brendan’s Isle, is a phantom island, or mythical island, supposedly situated in the North Atlantic somewhere west of Northern Africa. It is named after the Saint Brendan who founded the Clonfert monastery and monastic school. It is said to have been discovered by the saint and his followers while they were traveling across the ocean, evangelizing islands. It appeared on numerous maps in Christopher Columbus's time, most notably Martin Behaim's Erdapfel of 1492. It is referred to as La isla de San Borondón or isla de Samborombón in Spanish.
The first mention of the island was in the ninth-century Latin text Navigatio Sancti Brendani Abatis (Voyage of Saint Brendan the Abbot), placing the island into Irish and European folklore.
This island is named after Saint Brendan, who claimed to have landed on it in 512 together with 14 monks, with whom he held a mass. The monastic party reported its stay as 15 days, while the ships expecting their return complained that they had been kept waiting a year, during which period the island remained concealed behind a thick curtain of mist.
In his 'Navigatio Sancti Brendan Abbatis', the monk Barino mentioned having visited this same "Paradise" in the Atlantic, a thickly wooded mountainous island where the sun never set and it was always day: the flora were abundant, the trees bore rich fruit, the rivers ran with fresh water, and the birds sang sweetly in the trees.
In 'Planiferio de Ebstorf' (1234), Marcos Martinez referred to "the lost island discovered by St Brendan but nobody has found it since" and in Mapamundi de Hereford (1275) the whole archipelago is described as "The Isles of the Blessed and the Island of St Brendan".
The Portuguese writer Luís Perdigão recorded the interest of the King of Portugal after a sea captain informed Henry the Navigator (1394–1460) that he had found the island but was driven off by tumultuous sea conditions. Henry ordered him back: he sailed off but never returned. Christopher Columbus is said to have believed in its existence.
In 1566 Hernán Pérez de Grado, First Regent of the Royal Canary Islands Court, ordered the justices at la Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera to investigate the phenomenon. In his history, Abreu y Galindo reports a conversation with a French adventurer claiming to have visited San Borondon, departing hence when a storm set in and making the voyage to La Palma for shelter within a day. In another report, Alonso de Espinosa, governor of El Hierro, described sighting San Borondon island north west of El Hierro and "leeward" of La Palma. He listed 100 witnesses to the apparition.
Juan de Abréu Galindo reported in Historia de la Conquista de las siete Islas Canarias that "the island of Saint Brendan (San Borondon), which is the eighth and last, whose existence may be inferred from sightings of its apparitions, seems to be located at 20 degrees 30 minutes of latitude and eight leagues (40 kilometres) due west of La Gomera." (The longitude given in the coordinates is based on the old measurement before the introduction of the Greenwich meridian).
In 1719, the Scottish monk Sigbert de Gembloux reported seeing the island, as did Don Matea Dacesta, mayor of Valverde, El Hierro in 1721. As a result of these sightings, that same year Juan de Mur y Aguerre, military governor of the Canary Islands, appointed a new commission of inquiry under Gaspar Dominguez, a sea captain; no fresh evidence was uncovered and subsequently interest waned. According to the Canary historian Ramirez, in 1723 a priest performed the rite of exorcism towards the island during one of its apparitions behind low cloud. This was witnessed by a large number of persons and sworn to on affidavit.
In 1759 a Franciscan monk mentioned, but not identified by name, by Viera y Clavijo wrote to a friend: "I was most desirous to see the island of San Borondon and, finding myself in Alexero, La Palma, on 3 May at six of the morning, I saw, and can swear to it on oath, that while having in plain view at the same time the island of El Hierro, I saw another island of the same colour and appearance, and I made out through a telescope, much wooded terrain in its central area. Then I sent for the priest Antonio Jose Manrique, who had seen it twice previously, and upon arrival he saw only a portion of it, for when he was watching, a cloud obscured the mountain. It was subsequently visible for another 90 minutes. being seen by about forty spectators, but in the afternoon when we returned to the same point we could see nothing on account of the heavy rain."
In his Noticias, Vol I, 1772, chronicler Viera y Clavijo wrote: "A few years ago while returning from the Americas, the captain of a ship of the Canary Fleet believed he saw La Palma appear and, having set his course for Tenerife based on his sighting, was astonished to find the real La Palma materialize in the distance next morning." Viera adds that a similar entry is made in the diaries of Colonel don Roberto de Rivas, who made the observation that his ship "having been close to the island of La Palma in the afternoon, and not arriving there until late the next day", the officer was forced to conclude that "the wind and current must have been extraordinarily unfavourable during the night."
Further expeditions were organised in the search for the island, but from the 19th century onwards, reported sightings of San Borondon became less frequent (Wikipedia).

The book has been called "one of the most curious and interesting pictorial volumes of Americana, and of great rarity." Part history, part fantasy, this odd work chronicles the evangelisation of America by the Catalonian Benedictine Bernardo Buil (or Boyl), Abbot of Monserrat, who with twelve of his followers travelled with Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to Hispaniola (Haiti) in 1493. Considered the first Patriarch of the region, Buil served as Viscount General of the West Indies. In this capacity he often quarreled vehemently with Columbus, and upon returning to Spain lodged a formal complaint with King Ferdinand against the explorer's conduct. Ferdinand ruled in Columbus's favor, and Buil retired to the Abbey of Cuxa. The work was written pseudonymously by Caspar Plautius, O.S.B. of Munich, and Abbot of Seitenstetten (Austria) from 1610 to 1627. Plautius' account of the early Benedictine missionaries' achievements is laced with marvels and miracles, the actual voyage of the monks being conflated with other, legendary voyages (notably that of the Irish Saint Brendan), and he dwells on the cruelties of the native inhabitants in support of the notion that Satan ruled the native American religions. The work is nonetheless filled with authentic details of Caribbean customs, agricultural products, local flora and fauna, and arts. The specimen of printed music on pp. 35-36 represents one of the earliest printed examples of Native American chants. The notoriously immodest dedicatory epistle from the author to himself attests to his own great learning. "In the most fulsome style he inscribes the work to himself in a long and highly complimentary dedication. He accuses the DeBrys, in their great collection of voyages, of telling outrageous lies, forgetting apparently his own whackers."--Henry Stevens, Bibiotheca. Historica, 1549. Although the place of publication is not given, the book was printed in nearby Linz, according to H.J. Wynkelmann's near contemporary work entitled Der Amerikanischen neuen Welt beschreibung (Oldenburg, 1664, p. 30). Most interesting are the copperplate engravings, first-rate examples of the dense narrative style associated with the de Bry Voyages. Only the first engraving is signed, by Wolfgang Kilian (1581-1662), Augsburg master-engraver, but the others are comparable in style and were probably also executed by him. The engraved architectonic title shows at top a reptilian Satan vanquished by the Pascal lamb amidst other emblematic objects; flanking the title are St. Brendan and Father Buil, the latter baptizing an Indian; at their feet a phoenix and a pelican with her piety, and at bottom center a small map showing India and America, with ship-studded seas between, on either shore a crowned column. This issue contains an additional emblematic plate of an owl between a royal crown and a bishop's mitre, symbolizing the Benedictine's achievements for the crown of Spain. Plate 1, purportedly Columbus with a hemispherical map, is a copy of the de Bry portrait of Francisco Pizarro on a map in the Great Voyages series. Plate 2 represents St. Brendan celebrating mass. Etta Streicher präsentierte die performative Lesung „Erdapfel,Messer,Wasser,Salz“ und Kerstin Platsch las aus ihrem Buch „Deutschland ist geil“.
Weltweit werden jährlich etwa 376 Millionen Tonnen Kartoffeln geerntet. Die Kartoffel ist eines der wichtigsten Nahrungsmittel der Welt, daneben aber auch Futtermittel und Industrierohstoff.
Die Kartoffel hat sich auf dem Produktionsbetrieb kontinuierlich zu einer Kultur für Spezialisten entwickelt. Die Anzahl Kartoffelproduzenten in der Schweiz hat sich von 2001 bis 2011 halbiert bei gleichbleibender jährlicher Produktionsmenge. Die gesamte Anbaufläche konzentriert sich auf weniger Betriebe, welche ihre Flächen ausdehnen.
