Albatross are among the most energy efficient flyers. Their high aspect ratio wing is most efficient for long distance gliding. This one banks left rotating its whole body while its head remains level with the horizon, tapping into the horizontal lift component. Bones lock into position requiring no muscle to keep the six foot wing span extended. At sea it will have an oscillating glide path as it rises on orographic lift off wave faces then gravity accelerates into the wave troughs to glide for thousands of miles across the Pacific. Ostensibly nomadic wandering over open ocean is actually guided by its remarkable olfactory acuity enabling location of surface forage at upwelling sites. The aerodynamics of Laysan albatross, or mōlī, flight are fascinating, but it is the seemingly effortless, calm beauty, and aerial grace that keeps me enviously watching them for hours.

I took so many photos of this amazing village that I wanted to flood my Flicker with them but had to scale it down to just 4. It is by far one of the most serene and breath taking sims I have seen so far I am truly in awe of this place and so envious of the owners. 😍
At first he just stared. Frozen. Unsure.
And then it hit him on what he was witnessing. That was the moment he brayed at a sound level that even a jackass would be envious of.
"It's avian flu. Run for your lives!" alarmed the penguin to his waddle.

“Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us.”

Last week I visited Prague for a short time. Part of that time was obscured by super thick delicious fog creating an atmosphere that Hammer films would be envious of. Here is a moment I particularly enjoyed while crossing the Charles Bridge.

La envidiosa niebla queriendo tapara la belleza de esa aldea gallega.
The envious fog wanting to cover the beauty of this Galician village.
I've been seeing quite a few flower photos lately from my part of Europe and I was becoming a little envious. Finally, I spotted these three beauties today!
Love is always patient;
love is always kind;
love is never envious
or arrogant with pride.
Nor is she conceited,
and she is never rude;
she never thinks just of herself
or ever gets annoyed.
She never is resentful;
is never glad with sin;
she’s always glad to side with truth,
and pleased that truth will win.
She bears up under everything;
believes the best in all;
there is no limit to her hope,
and never will she fall.
“We’re back again after last week’s no show, Sky.” Said Bertie.
“Yes, I don’t know what went wrong last week, do you, Posh?”
“The man said something about him not being in the right state of mind to write anything. I assume that is why we didn’t have to go through this picture taking nonsense for once.” Replied Posh Bear.
“What a strange thing to say, Posh. I wonder what kind of mind he was in if it wasn’t the right one and I have to admit I never noticed any changes in the man.”
“No, me neither, Bertie. I suppose that is hoomans for you though.” Agreed Sky.
“Sky, what are you doing with that notebook and pen?” Asked Posh.
“I borrowed it from the man’s desk, I thought it might come in handy to make notes in.” Explained Sky.
“What a great idea, Sky, I wish I had seen it and thought of doing that.” Said Bertie looking enviously at the notebook and pen.
“Sky, I don’t wish to criticise for I’m sure you know what you are doing, but you can’t write.” Said Posh Bear.
“I know, Posh, but that is a good thing you see Posh, it is good, because if I could write, I wouldn’t be able to read what I had written, as I can’t read either.” Explained Sky.
“That is clever, Sky, I agree with you that there is no point writing stuff down if you can’t then read it at a later date and know what you have written.” Said Bertie scratching his head with his paw.
“Well, if you can’t write and can’t read, why do you want a notebook and pen, Sky?” Asked Posh Bear.
“Sky could draw pictures, Posh, to remind him of things and then he wouldn’t need to read or write.” Bertie offered.
“Yes, yes I suppose there is that, he could draw pictures.” Agreed Posh.
“No, I couldn’t. I can’t draw and anyway the pen is too big for me to hold in my paws. Said Sky.
“It is a very nice notebook and I do like that pen, Sky, I wish that I had seen it first. I still can’t understand why you wanted it though.” Said Posh looking confused.
“I thought you would like it, Posh. You came to my mind and I don’t know if it was my right mind or wrong mind, but you were there for sure, as soon as I saw it.”
“That is nice to know, Sky.”
“Yes, I thought there is Posh with all that honey and me with none at all. Then I thought, that is a nice notebook and pen and I think Posh would like them. In fact, I clearly remember thinking that good old Posh would be happy to hand over a fair amount of honey for a notebook and pen like this.”
“I do so agree, Sky, I would think several jars in fact so both his friend, Sky, could enjoy some nice honey and also Sky’s best friend could also have a jar or two.” Said Bertie.
Posh Bear looked at his two friends and nodded his head slowly.
“I understand your thinking there but there is a slight flaw in it though.” He said smiling.
“What is that, Posh?” They asked in unison.
“I don’t have any honey either at the moment. I finished my last jar up just before I sat down here. I think when the man is finished, it may be a good idea if you can find out when our delivery is due to arrive, Sky.”
“But Posh, there was four jars there when I looked just a little while ago.” Said Bertie looking surprised.
“Well, there was only one jar left when I went there and I had that before I came here.” Said Posh who along with Bertie was looking at Sky.
“I really couldn’t say chaps, I can’t count either…” said Sky, grinning and licking his lips.
one of the best places to view my favourite mountain, I am quite envious of the people who live on the top of this hill and get to see Miss Baker every day ... when she deigns to show her beautiful countenance :)

Cucurbitaceae seller
New-Delhi (India) - Vegetable market in the Paharganj district. By dint of seeing me pass and engage in conversation with him every time I come to this market, this giant pumpkin seller has become a real friendly acquaintance. He sometimes offers me a tea so that I can tell him about the habits and customs in Europe. He is not at all envious of our way of life. On the contrary. He is very attached to his life and his beliefs. He's just curious how it's going elsewhere in the world. And I feel like when I tell him about the world, I reinforce his belief that he was born into the right culture.

Tree ornamented with glass eyes to ward off evil spirits in Cappadocia, Turkey. Glass ornaments hang from trees in Cappadocia, Turkey, and are intended to ward off the “evil eye” and reverse any ill intentions. The evil eye is a superstitious belief that someone's envious or malicious gaze can cause bad luck.

The envious Brown Pelican in yesterday’s post simply had to try to get that big meal. A chase ensued during which the possessor of the prize seemed to have a tough time taking flight. After all, it was probably carrying nearly its own weight in its pouch. So this furious chase continued for probably thirty seconds. Finally the bird with the full pouch achieved airborne status and flew away with its hard earned prize. I didn’t record lift-off because shortly after this shot, the chase changed directions away from me and there was just bird butt shots after that.
So I can't confirm that the pelican was able swallow that behemoth fish. The old limerick about their bill holding more than their belly can may have come into play.
Along the cliff edge is a natural vortex feature filled with water from recent rains. It is like an eye looking towards the heavens.
A vortex feature is formed as wind blows up and over the edge of the cliff face causing a vortex to emerge in the air. Sand particles get caught up in the vortex, slowly eroding a depression in the rock which grows ever deeper.
I entered this photo in a photography show and a local poet, Barbara J. Funke, wrote a poem. Thank you, Barbara! The title and poem follows:
Desert Look Out

Blind sentry,
what news?
You are silent.
What ferocious wind
augured these deep
cycloptic layers of sand
that shadow the margins
down to your hollowed eye?
Your reservoir of green tears seems envious of all-seeing sky,
its blue and white-swirled
depths of light.
Without vision or insight,
your emerald iris can express
only what the sky says:
Speak. Repeat after me.

Lifer No. 2 on such a lucky day, a female Yellow-Headed Blackbird. I have been so envious of other peoples captures of these guys for so long, having only ever seen one years ago while waiting in traffic without a camera. I was beginning to think that they were non-existent in my neck of the woods. Well on this day as I was driving small almost deserted unfamiliar backroads it seemed that they were everywhere.
Not the greatest stage for this lady, but I found the females to be be very skittish, and for the most part seemed to stick to the ground and never did find one perched on a cattail, at least not staying long enough to even get a focus on them.
Now I am assuming that this is a female and not a young male, please correct me if I am wrong. Whatever it is, I am a thrilled to have it. Tomorrow the male.
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY to all of you dudes with children. I hope they spoil you rotten in showing their appreciation for you.
For this week’s Macro Monday’s theme 'Hobby' I chose one of the hobbies I enjoy most at the moment (apart from photography, going outdoors, reading, watching films, listening to music…..!) - which is drawing. I am a person with a multitude of interests and I would really need the day to be 80 hours long to be able to pursue all of the things I would like to do in my pastime. As a big fan of comic books I was always fascinated and a bit envious of all the diverse artwork so I decided to pick up the pencil and inks myself to do something creative. Drawing is fantastically challenging, frustrating, time-consuming and rewarding at the same time.
For the macro shot I decided to draw the skull of a tiger. I held the ink brush pen for the majority of the exposure – just slipped it off to the side at the very end to create the ghost image effect. BTW, for those of you interested in what the final drawing looks like: www.flickr.com/photos/gigiwallace/shares/4VL9fp

But where unbruised youth with unstuff'd brain

Doth reign.

I've been casting some envious glances at the butterfly pics I'm seeing posted on flickr, especially those from back in Somerset. I've been very lucky with what I've been able to encounter here in Wales however I do miss those Somerset wildflower meadows.
So here's one from last year.....which is cheating a bit I know.

For those of you who post fox photos you KNOW how envious I always am! I so love them. So very grateful for the opportunity to see these little kits one evening. They made my heart sing and gave me a few good shots!

A flat bench high above the San Rafael River provided a swallow's view of the Little Grand Canyon, which is 1,000 feet deep. One of the attractive aspects of this bench is that violet-green swallows were constantly diving and swooping to catch insects. It makes one envious of the capabilities of the swallows and their views of this fantastic landscape.
An explanation to the title.
It's almost been two years to the day since I first climbed Chrulaiste, the mountain opposite The Buachaille Etive Mor range. My motivation was purely out of curiosity, what did the mighty Buachaille look like from up there?
www.flickr.com/photos/roksoff/10185352423/in/dateposted/
Searches online returned very few pictures from this spot, most pictures were taken by ramblers recording their day out in the hills, nothing other than snaps but a few serious pictures really drew your eye and stood out from the bunch here and there.
I wanted something different, something a little bit special and I'd found my spot. All that was needed now were the conditions and the right conditions on a day I was free.
It was a horrendous day two years ago, very difficult to stand in the wind let alone walk anywhere or take pictures but from that day onwards I was hooked on this view. This was a shot I craved and obsessed over like no other. It's sat in the back of my mind since then, niggling and eating away at me like an infectious disease.
On that grey dull wet windy day I'd imagined the picture on a beautiful sunrise with mist flowing through the glen below, the rising sun kissing the peaks.
I've done this shot a few times in all conditions, pouring rain, blazing sun, sunrise, sunset, tons of snow, midgey infested hell, autumn, summer, winter, spring but never been lucky enough to get the mist on the floor below until today.
It's been very frustrating to see a couple of pictures just like I imagined turn up, one was only a couple of weeks ago and I was so envious.
It's been a long wait but a huge relief to finally get this monkey off my back. It feels so good to put a picture to bed after waiting so long. I love the view but starting to hate the climb up. Don't think I've got the motivation to climb it ever again now.
I didn't plan to be on Chrulaiste this morning, was supposed to be somewhere else as the forecast was not for mist or clear skies. Driving through Glencoe it wasn't until I passed The Three Sister's before hitting mist, as I drove further the mist got thicker. Pulled up on Buachaille corner checking the clock, 45 minutes to get up Chrulaiste before sunrise. I've done this climb in 45 mintues before but that was with a strong wind on my back and less kit so was pushing it to get to the summit on time. It was a struggle as I set off far too quick but hit the top in record time, motivation is a strong driving force, but jings it nearly killed me. :)
I have a couple of minor niggles with this picture but I'm not complaining, no picture is ever perfect. It was a gorgeous sunrise lifting and pulling out all the autumn colour in the glen below in a display of colour and warm glow I've never seen before. I felt very humbled to witness this on Chrulaiste.
Glencoe is coming in to it's own at the moment, the yellows, oranges and reds will be in full flow in a couple of weeks so looking forward to that then on to winter.
Hope you enjoy.
