Here is a group of Gentoo Penguin porpoising through the water, which is leaping out of the water in shallow arcs while swimming. It is odd that this behaviour should be called porpoising rather than dolphining as porpoises don't usually leap clear of the water whereas dolphins do www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/5519798639/in/photolist Air is less resistant than water which probably speeds the penguins' progress but also gives them a chance to breathe while moving rapidly. Most porpoising penguins seem to have their beaks open as if snatching a quick breath, just like these. I also liked the way that these were covered in a glassy layer of water shining in the sun, hence the title Glacé Penguins. This is not a particularly easy thing to capture as they spend much more time under the water and it is difficult to predict when and where they will leap. Although with a millpond surface like this at least you can follow them under water and wait for them to leap. This shows the three stages of porpoising and it is noteworthy that there is barely a splash from the middle bird. I think Tom Daley would be envious of that entry.
the red fox (Vulpes vulpes).
The European red fox was introduced to Australia in mid 1800's for recreational hunting. It has become one of the introuced predators that are responsible for the extinction of ten native species in Western Australia.
This handsome red fox was on a grassed patch on the opposite side of a narrow channel from me at Herdsman Lake Reserve. It appeared unperturbed by passing cyclists and walkers with their beloved dogs, although the fox did give the dogs a wary or perhaps envious glance. A black swan was unaware of the fox and it climbed up to the grassed patch from the water. The fox launched at the swan, which took flight in a scutter. The fox next found a frog and brought it up from the water edge. Somehow, the frog managed to escape and hopped back to the water. Then, two photographers arrived at the fox’s side of the water channel. The fox slowly approached them and looked up at them, as if saying, “Please adopt me. I’m a homeless dog.” Having taken enough photos, the photographers turned around and walked away, but the fox trailed behind them for some 50 metres before it gave up and disappeared into tall grass. Is the fox bold, young, naive or all the above?

This is my coast, it’s beautiful isn’t it. Unfortunately for me I don’t always see it, especially in the photo’s I take. It’s all too familiar, I’ve lived here for all but 3 years of my life, so I only glance at these photo’s as I wade through my catalog looking for something more exotic, adventurist, some where not local. We’ll eventually move from here to be closure to my family and these photo will be precious. I cycled along here this morning to take my mind of the Bristol Bawn’s being airborne on their way to Ibiza. I get nervous when my nearest and dearest are flying, watching the departure and arrival, tracking the plane across the globe, I was also a little envious. I would of loved to be going with them, my daughter is going to the same place at the end of August and I’m sure we would have all gone together if Nonno and Nonna were going, it was a thing before the pandemic. My problem, is that I now don’t want to leave the dogs in kennels. I’ve always had problems with leaving them and now Toby is 15 and Oscar is 12 and I feel they are to old to be left, I sure there would be OK, but it’s just me. So I get on my bike and cycle along my coast to take my mind of things.
Pixie is helping with the catfood stockcheck .Kaiser is looking on enviously as the box is too small for him to get in.

Petra (Arabic: البتراء, Al-Batrāʾ; Ancient Greek: Πέτρα), originally known as Raqmu (Nabataean Arabic: الرقيم), is a historical and archaeological city in southern Jordan. Petra lies on the slope of Jabal Al-Madbah in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah valley that run from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Established possibly as early as the 4th century BC as the capital city of the Nabataean Kingdom. The Nabataeans were nomadic Arabs who invested in Petra's proximity to the trade routes by establishing it as a major regional trading hub.
The trading business gained the Nabataeans considerable revenue, and Petra became the focus of their wealth. The earliest recorded historical reference to the city was when an envious Greek dynasty attempted to ransack the city in 312 BC. The Nabataeans were, unlike their enemies, accustomed to living in the barren deserts, and were able to repel attacks by utilizing the area's mountainous terrain. They were particularly skillful in harvesting rainwater, agriculture and stone carving. The Kingdom's capital continued to flourish until the 1st century AD when its famous Al-Khazneh facade was constructed, and its population peaked at an estimated 20,000 inhabitants.
Encroaching troops of the Roman Empire in 106 AD forced the Nabataeans to surrender. The Romans annexed and renamed the Kingdom to Arabia Petraea. Petra's importance declined as sea trade routes emerged, and after a 363 earthquake destroyed many structures. The Byzantine Era witnessed the construction of several Christian churches. By 700, the city became an abandoned place where only a handful of nomads grazed goats. It remained an unknown place until it was rediscovered by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812, sparking renewed interest in the city.
The city is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Another name for Petra is the Rose City due to the color of the stone out of which it is carved. It is a symbol of Jordan, as well as Jordan's most-visited tourist attraction.
It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. UNESCO has described it as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage".
Several of my Flickr friends have been posting beautiful photo's of spring flowers and other greenery - and I sit here envious of them as I look out at my white wintery world. Well - when I went to my onion bin yesterday - the tiniest 2" onion greeted me with a little green sprout. I think the message was; "have faith; in six more weeks our boreal forest will be sending up little green shoots of its own." I can't wait.
Don't get me wrong. I love snow lol I just don't want to live where it snows.
Snow is pretty to look at, fun to visit (for like a day) but other than that I would rather not live where it snows.
I do however do not mind winter sims in SL, because I get to wear cute outfits like this.
It might be cold outside but I'm toasty warm inside.
Any trip, no matter how exciting, will wind down at the end. It was already a cool night, and after walking around Salford Quays for a couple of hours, it was very chilly and I was tired.
Our last stop on our trip was the lift bridge which, as its name implies... lifts! It didn't whilst we were there but it was a still a nice little walk and I liked the architecture. Of course, being a bridge it had people walking both behind and towards, so I had no time at all to set this shot up. Praise be to my teeny tiny bit of luck! Yay! (I'm assuming that's my one bit used up now)
Maybe it's just the otherworldly green lights and the shape of the bridge, but I'm reminded of aliens. Perhaps this is some craft from outer-space, gazing around at the towers... envious of Manchester...
...Or it's just a curvy bridge.

I’ve held back on posting this image since the day I got back from Cornwall. It has special significance for me… not because its an awesome picture, capable of sweeping all before it in competitions, but just a moment in time and a state of mind. I know everyone has had a tough time over the last few years with Covid and lockdowns, followed by the global meltdown exacerbated by the war in Ukraine etc, etc. If we are truly honest with ourselves, most of us have gotten through the worst of the worst unscathed… those who have lost close loved ones or been bombed out of house and home might say ours are first world problems and they’d be right.
Still, everybody has their own personal stories to tell and life can drag you down at the most unexpected moments. I’m envious of those who can pick themselves up, dust themselves down and get on with life, unfortunately, I’m not one of them… I thought I was, but everyone has their breaking point. Mine came on the 6th September 2021 at 10:10am. Without going into all the detail, I put it down to a few things - the lockdowns, family health problems, legal battles and just for good measure – redundancy right in the middle of it all! I suffered a total breakdown resulting in severe anxiety and panic attacks that lasted for months and months. I can’t count the number of counselling sessions I had with Kathy over that time frame. I developed a scale - 10 down to 1 with 10 being the 6th September.
Recovery has been a very long road to travel with many ups and downs but the general trend (and no I haven’t done a spreadsheet on this) has been downwards towards 1. I’m only writing this now as the Cornwall trip was such a highlight for me last year and this very moment, sat on a fallen tree truck snapping away at the leaf covered rocks in the stream had such an uplifting happiness for me. But why three? I haven’t worked out what 1 or 2 means on my scale yet… I don’t think a lottery win would warrant that score as money truly doesn’t buy you happiness, but 3 is a very good day for me and I’m happy with that.
If you’re reading this and feel in a similar situation… yes, there IS light at the end of the tunnel, you will climb out of that pit of gloom. Speak to family and friends, it was the best thing I ever did.

Taken at the beginning of the month... My friend Landon said we needed an adventure to get excited about and look forward to this summer... Since he was envious of some of the images I got of this lake last year... This was the starting point haha. It did not take much convincing to plan things after that conversation haha.
A male Green Munia (Amandava formosa) was enjoying Sunshine after a brisk bath on a rock in its natural habitat. The colours of the bird and the backdrop bokeh just made for each other here. Ladies can be envious about their fascination on the lipstick colour variations after looking the beak colour of this beautiful bird under the sun. Looking utmost gorgeous is the sweet bird here. Gimsøy, Lofoten, Norway
Been planning this trip for months with Mark Waidson, Mrs W and Mrs R. The first week was always going to be photography led with an activity-based break back at Tromsø. The photography didn’t disappoint.
We flew into Tromsø late on the Tuesday night (18th) with a brief hotel stop-over in order to catch the first fast ferry to Harstad at 7am the next day. Then pick up the hire car (a Toyota Rav 4x4 with snow tyres) … excellent car! And then it was on the road to Svolvær for our second night stop and the real start to our holiday.
As I discovered last year, travelling through Norway and especially Lofoten in Winter is so frustrating to a photographer as there are virtually zero stopping places to grab the stunning vista that unfolds at every bend in the road. You can always chance what you think is a lay-by but you risk putting your car in a ditch or even worse rolling it down a deep gully.
Anyway, enough of the “getting there”. Mark, had planned a location map that the best travelled adventurer would be envious of.
Our first location was Gimsøy Kirke on the island of Gimsøy – a beautiful little white church that blended perfectly into the landscape.
A reverie to say the least,
a darkness perpetrated by beliefs.
I envision the entrance, a cold whistle screams adventure.
Entering the mouth of the beast, my calloused hands, my fragile tips,
brushing against the ceiling, caressing and corrupting the structure,
disappearing deeper from destruction.
This grimace upon the face, this terror protruding within the gut,
an agony to be replaced,
once escaped, courage will flourish.
Expanding the vessel,
vomiting to emptiness, given room to proceed,
phosphorescent hues exploding through my dreams.
Reaching the cusp, I gather my strength,
placed upon my scalp, a diadem to show defeat,
unworthy, fruitless scavengers, left to retreat.
Broken, a shattered age, misguided and abused, nothing to lose.
Words ring true, guidance for those envious of power,
wake from endless lies,
enter into an abyss, never to return,
abandoned dark tunnel.

The Great Blue Heron I posted yesterday gave it his all but just could not down that huge fish. Several who commented thought it might be successful, but alas, it wasn’t to be. He repeatedly dropped the fish and then picked it up again.
On one of those drops, this Brown Pelican swooped in and gathered the catch in its huge bill pouch. If you look closely you'll see the fish's fins protruding. I think I heard the pelican say to the GBH “let me show you how it’s done son”. Notice the other Brown Pelican in the background. Looks like he might be a bit envious and desirous, right? Stay tuned.

Cwm Idwal nestled within the Glyders of Y Garn and Glyder Fawr & Fach looking at the Devils Kitchen. An olde haunt with the Cheese Slabs aka the Idwal slabs centre stage. My brother and sister-in law told me they had seen three juvenile Black-shouldered Kite in the grasslands near home. I went down the following day and found them hanging around a big old tree. I spent a magic hour, watching them hunting, soaring high and low, so low at times that they were traveling through the people's front gardens. This one caught a mouse for an afternoon snack. Out of the photo, the siblings looked on enviously. No sharing in this family!
I live in an outer suburb, once part of the great plains grasslands. Less than 1 percent remains. The area is being subdivided for housing. They have left a grassland corridor and large lake within a creek system. I hope it is enough to sustain them and keep them in the area.
