WPA mural entitled "The Life and Times of General Israel Putnam", painted in 1935 by James H. Daugherty. It was originally painted for the Greenwich Town Hall. Prior to it's restoration in 1998 it had hung in the Hamilton Avenue School in Greenwich. However, the scenes depicted were deemed too "violent" for the children and after it's restoration in 1998 by Joseph Matteis, Jr, with funds from the Ruth W. Brown Foundation, it was hung in the Greenwich Public Library on Boston Post Rd (US Hwy 1).

This piece is entitled "self portrait of ones entire life". I executed this piece with the a theory I developed that is called Dimensionalism . This theory has its inspiration form my experiences with pre-seizure events for I have epilepsy. In this state I become detached from reality and see time in a different construct, that of a hyper intensity. A hyper awareness of a moment and everything that constructs it from sounds, thoughts, things tactile . While in these pre seizure states, some instances time is slowed down/speed up or frozen. While in other instances I am forced away form all comprehension of what is in my present environment and reality takes on a totally foreign existence where all has to be re learned.

For the viewers of my piece all of life is in dimensions and how one moves through these dimensions of either large dimensional constructs such as ones life or to the minute dimensional construct of a simple word. Thus giving the viewer this new perspective of time and space. The suspended animation of the piece is only dynamic as the viewer views the piece from the narrower sides form either end where a visible play of time sequencing exists and ones eye is drawn into the piece...

A perspective of a Dimesionalist where one has a view of a moment with a gods eye/time traveler or a pure energy source . From looking at a simple word to a memory one has. All is captured in dimensions. There are other branches of my theory that further portray my experiences. Demensionalising and facitile dimensionalism. These ideas also play with the constructs of how one sees time/moment.I hope to execute these ideas in the future...........

All these ideas/theories have a direct correlation with present day society...from the over abundance of information that is transferred by different technologies to the ways these technologies directly affect our existence and how it adds other dimensions of time to our lives.

I will be placing more info online in the future. and creating a temp website that fully explains all the details and shows examples of these theories as well as go into more details..

About Dante Biss-Grayson and Sky-Eagle Collection

Artist, Designer, Poet, Writer, Activist

Being half Native American, of the Osage Nation, Dante uses the archetype as an image to guide his artistic process, getting into a trance-like state and letting the work find itself. He adheres to the Zen tradition of simple strokes converging with one idea, leaving on the canvas one decisive expression.

Dante Biss-Grayson’s art is an expression of his experiences as a combat veteran combined with the PTSD those experiences begot him. Having studied art before enlisting, he became reacquainted with painting as a means of confronting and expressing the loss, the absurdity, and the beauty of war. He writes that he “grew up as the apprentice/protégé and son of [artists] Earl Biss and Gina Gray,” surrounded by the radical art of the 1960s/70s-era Institute of American Indian Arts.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spindle_(shrub)

The spindles, genus Euonymus, comprise about 170-180 species of deciduous and evergreen shrubs and small trees. They live mostly in East Asia, including the Himalayas,[1] and they also have a distribution in Europe, Asia, Australasia, North America and Madagascar.

Mature Spindle fruit, after splitting open to reveal the seeds

The flowers are situated in small groups, inconspicuous and of green or yellow shades.[1] The leaves are opposite (rarely alternate) and simple ovoid, typically 2-15 cm long, and usually with a finely serrated margin.

The fruit is a pink-red four- or five- valved pod-like berry, which splits open to reveal the fleshy-coated orange seeds. The seeds are eaten by frugivorous birds, which digest the fleshy seed coat and disperse the seeds in their droppings. All parts of the plants are poisonous to humans if eaten. The wood was traditionally used for the making of spindles for spinning wool; this use is the origin of the English name of the shrubs.

Spindles are popular garden shrubs, grown for their foliage, the deciduous species often exhibiting very bright red fall colours, and also for the decorative berries

An article entitled "Sea lions at Victoria's Race Rocks injured by debris, boats" just ran in Victoria's Times Colonist that quoted me. See it here: www.timescolonist.com/technology/lions+Victoria+Race+Rock...

Anna Hall, a marine zoologist also quoted in the article suggests showing graphic images to children to warn them of the dangers posed to sea lions. This series is a response to that suggestion and not biased propaganda as I have been accused of.

This image summarizes the article's headline. Two California sea lions, one with some marine junk entangled around its neck (a death sentence), and another whose front flipper has been nearly severed by a boat's propeller (it is currently wasting away from not being able to hunt for food).

An update from a NOAA research biologist and a veterinarian who specializes in marine mammals: Both experts agree the wound has been present for so long that the original source of the trauma is impossible to say with scientific certainty. Possible causes include orca bite, entanglement, and boat strike.

Pressemitteilung MMK

Inaugurated on October 18, 2000, this monument entitled "Women are Persons!" is a tribute to Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby, Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney and Henrietta Muir Edwards. Known as the Famous Five, these women won the "Persons" Case, a 1929 court ruling which legally declared women as persons under the British North America Act and made them eligible for appointment to the Canadian Senate

The larger-than-life sculptures by Edmonton artist Barbara Paterson were donated to the Government of Canada by the Famous 5 Foundation. They show the five women celebrating their important legal victory in characteristic poses. An empty chair adds an interactive feature to the monument that invites passers-by to join the group. The newspaper with the headline "Women are Persons" that Nellie McClung is holding reflects some of the actual headlines of newspapers of the day.

Nellie L. McClung (1873-1951), novelist, journalist, suffragette and temperance worker. She was a member of the Alberta legislature, the only woman on the Dominion War Council, and the first woman on the CBC Board of Governors.

Irene Parlby (1868-1965), suffragette and politician. She was elected president of the women's branch of the United Farmers of Alberta in 1916 and became a member of the Alberta legislature in 1921. She was still a member of Parliament at the time of the Persons Case.

Emily G. Murphy (1868-1933), instigator of the Persons Case, writer, and first woman magistrate in the British Empire. She pioneered married women's rights, was National President of the Canadian Women's Press Club 1913-1920, vice-president of the National Council of Women and first president of the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada.

Henrietta Muir Edwards, (1849-1931), journalist, suffragist and organizer, fought for equal rights for wives, mothers' allowances and women's rights. She started the Working Girls' Association in Montréal in 1875, a forerunner of the YWCA. Later, while living in Alberta, she compiled two works on Alberta and federal laws affecting women and children.

Louise McKinney (1868-1931), politician and temperance campaigner. She was president of the Dominion Women's Christian Union and elected to the Alberta legislature in 1917 as representative of the non-partisan league.

Armory Center for the Arts is pleased to present an exhibition entitled Music for Hoarders, a video projection and installation by Los Angeles-based artist Dawn Kasper that documents a live "visual poem performance action" of the same name. Music for Hoarders, organized by Armory curator Irene Tsatsos, will be on display from February 12 – May 13, 2012 in the Armory’s Pasadena Art Alliance Gallery. A public opening reception will take place on Saturday, February 11 from 7-9pm in conjunction with Armory’s opening of simultaneous solo exhibitions by Richard Jackson, Nicolas Grider, and Jocelyn Foye. The exhibitions by Kasper, Grider, and Foye coincide with the Armory’s lead exhibition, Richard Jackson’s Accidents in Abstract Painting, the Armory, creating an opportunity for visitors to reflect on the shared conceptual and/or formal considerations between and among the works.

Originally performed in 2010 at Honor Fraser Gallery in Culver City, California, the performance Music for Hoarders featured a unique musical score designed specifically for the gallery environment. The structure of their composition was determined according to a performer’s spontaneous interactions with a large and unwieldy set of found everyday objects that had been stacked in the middle of the space. Musicians employed an aleatoric technique; they played whenever an object was touched, each musician assigned a sound to that object, each sound was performed during the duration of the object's use, and the sound assisted in informing the performer’s movements during the duration of the performance. The improvised musical interpretations of everyday objects compounded throughout the performance; the resulting full, layered sound, “hoarded” in the gallery, was meant to invoke the idea and physical sense of the hoarding of human emotions. The Armory will present documentation of this performance in a single-channel video installation with chairs and a new painting directly on the wall.

About the Artist

The work of Los Angeles-based performance artist Dawn Kasper addresses a deep fascination with the subjects of vulnerability, desire, process, and the construction and location of meaning. She critiques the corporate aspects of our culture by examining emotions – such as fear, panic, hate, envy, lust – through which advertisers, news media, and other commercial entities, manipulate us, and in doing so strives to create a place of shared camaraderie. Kasper often performs in a premeditated yet spontaneous manner, generally using props, slapstick comedy, and monologue to ask fundamental questions such as What is existence? or What is a physical object?. She then attempts to answer these life questions, and more, while inhabiting different characters and personas, each differentiated through costume and costume changes, with all shifts taking place before the audience.

The environments in which Kasper performs, created through the use of props, musical instruments, and diverse personae, provide what she calls an “open-air laboratory (of thought),” creating a theatrical space while also doubling as a platform for living sculpture. “Everything is in play,” she says, “and everything is mobile.” Kasper often repeats actions and gestures in her performances, invoking a feeling of ritual or ritualistic behavior. Kasper’s performances are often extremely physical – her various characters often construct a sculpture or installation, marking her study into being and process, and serving as an illustration of her findings.

Dawn Kasper has performed and exhibited internationally at galleries and institutions including the Migros Museum Für Genenwartskunst in Zurich and LISTE Basel, both in Switzerland; Art Basel Art Positions and David Castillo Gallery, both in Miami; Newman Popiashvili Gallery, Leo Koenig Inc., Projekte, and Art in General, all in New York; Copy Gallery, Philadelphia; and Anna Helwing Gallery, Circus Gallery, J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Hammer Museum, and Museum of Contemporary Art, all in Los Angeles. Kasper is one of the acting co-directors of the performance and experimental art venue Human Resources in Los Angeles.

An exhibition entitled “Geographical Indications – Identities of Territories” was held on the sidelines of the Assemblies of WIPO Member States, which met from October 2-11, 2017.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helianthus

The Helianthus L. genus comprises 67 species and several subspecies in the Asteraceae family, all of which are native to North America, with some species (particularly Helianthus annuus (sunflower) and Helianthus tuberosus (Jerusalem artichoke) cultivated in Europe and other parts of the world as food crops and ornamental plants.

These are usually tall, annual or perennial plants, growing to a height of 50-390 cm. The rough and hairy stem is branched in the upper part. The petiolate leaves are dentate and often sticky. The lower leaves are opposite, ovate or often heart-shaped. The upper leaves are alternate and narrower.

They bear several to many wide, terminal capitula (flower heads), with bright yellow ray florets at the outside and maroon disc florets inside. These flower heads follow the direction of the sun, going from east to west during the day.

Helianthus species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species (see list of Lepidoptera that feed on Helianthus).

SEPTIC FLESH considered to be one of the pioneers of the Hellenic death metal sound, were formed in the 90’s.

After a demo entitled “Forgotten Path” and a Mini Lp entitled "Temple of the Lost Race" they managed to attract the attention of the French label Holly records, gaining access to the wider underground scene.

Their first full length album entitled "Mystic Places of Dawn" was recorded in April 1994 with M.W. Daoloth (from the cult black metal band Necromantia) as Co-producer.

One year later, in June 1995, they released "Esoptron", a dark opus with deep ancient Hellenic musical influences and themes dealing with philosophy and the occult.

The album that followed two years later, was entitled "Ophidian Wheel". The band added female vocals to the formula, recruiting Natalie Rassoulis. The neo-classical experimentations gained ground, adding a more theatrical dimension to the band’s sound.

In March 1998, the band released "Fallen Temple". It was a “crossroad” that represented the past of the band (the compositions of the rare “Temple of the Lost Race” re-recorded) but also presented a glimpse to the future, with some new material. In September of the same year, was also released a limited EP entitled "D.N.A Choronzone", which included the video clip for the song "The Eldest Cosmonaut" and 4 special tracks.

In June 1999, the band invaded Sweden to record with acclaimed producer Fredrik Nordstrom "Revolution DNA". The album was launched in October 1999 and presented highly addictive material, with a more straight forward metal attitude.

The first era of the band was concluded with the release of “Sumerian Daemons” in 2002. This album was the turning point to a more brutal and bombastic sound, while the dominating choir parts in Ancient Sumerian language, created a truly demonic atmosphere.

The next chapter of SEPTICFLESH (with the two words merged together from now on) begun in 2008, as the band signed with French labor Season of Mist and released "Communion". The album was recorded once again at Fredman studios in Sweden, with Fredrik Nordstrom as producer. Music-wise, it was a bold step forwards, as the band decided to utilize for the first time a full orchestra. The Filmharmonic Orchestra of Prague was chosen for the task, while Chris Antoniou, having obtained a Bachelor's and Master's degree in concert music in Londod, was responsible for the classical arrangements. The result was a unique merge of Death Metal heaviness, with Symphonic rage.

The next album "The Great Mass" was released in 2011. This time, the band collaborated with Peter Tägtgren for the production. The songs were heavy and at the same time highly technical and experimental, as the orchestral parts were further evolved. In addition the band collaborated with two exceptional female vocalists, Androniki Skoula (Mezzo Soprano) and Iliana Tsakiraki (Soprano). The overall result was a Grand dark metal "soundtrack".

The latest effort of the band is "Titan" released in 2014. The album was produced from Logan Mader. The title of the album, pretty much sums up its sound and general atmosphere. Primordial, menacing, majestic. Besides the use of Filmharmonic Orchestra of Prague for the third time, the band worked for the first time with the Children Choir of Prague, adding an eerie tone to the songs. After long years of experimentation, Septicflesh have reached to a point that their metal and symphonic elements are fused together in a solid unity. The song "Prometheus" (that is very indicative of this balance between power and atmosphere), was chosen to visually represent the album, in the form of a video clip.

This sculpture is entitled The Water of Life and was designed for the cloister garth in association with the 900th Anniversary celebrations of the foundation of the Benedictine Abbey of St Werburgh in 1092. It depicts the encounter between Jesus and the Woman of Samaria, showing their shared bowl overflowing with water. The theme of water also suggests a link to how the Benedictine monks water supply was at the centre of the cloister garden. The sculpture was cast in bronze by Chris Butler of Castle Fine Arts in Oswystry and funded by Capital Bank. It was dedicated by the Dean of Chester Cathedral, Dr. Stephen Smalley, on 8th May 1994.

ArtHatch presents two distinctive new exhibits entitled "Labours of the Months" by Tim Vermeulen and "Vignettes" by Ivan Unwin. These two extraordinary artists will display inspired works that provoke surreal visions and complex imagination, by captivating the viewer with their profound intellect. Drawing inspiration from the popular Medieval and Renaissance theme of "Labours of the Months", Tim Vermeulen takes the traditional labours as a springboard for investigating a contemporary world of contradictions, polarities, and paradox. Vermeulen says, "My work is part of a process of wrestling for self-discovery through autobiographical narratives, in many cases involving self-portraiture." Using the human form, patterns that echo M.C. Escher, and a touch of political theory, Ivan Unwin has created a masterpiece with his new series of paintings. With a broad artistic background in the British Art Scene, this now Canadian artist is successfully exploring his talents as a traditional visual artist. The Opening Reception will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011 from 6-10pm with Live Music, complimentary Stone Brewery Beer for guests 21 of age or older. ArtHatch is a 7000 square foot building which houses the front gallery: exhibitions changing monthly, "The Alley," featuring new and previous works from over 75 artists, the teen room featuring artwork by 6 local teens, 14 artist studios, ranging in size from 150 to 800 square feet, featuring the work of over 28 local artists, and "The Lounge", containing 8 walls featuring local artists. The front gallery features contemporary and cutting edge artwork.

These 39 pictures entitled "Colors of Fall in Yardley . . ." were all taken around my home in late October, pre-Hurricane Sandy. Number 7968 is a photo of the tree that came crashing down on two unsuspecting cars parked underneath it at the height of the hurricane.

Fall happens to be my favorite time of year and not just because pumpkin flavors are all the rage. From late September to early November, Mother Nature puts on her most spectacular show. Trees of all types slowly transition from their standard leaves to shades of red, orange, gold, brown, and even purple. Landscapes across the country pop with vibrant colors and serve as a brief reminder just how beautiful nature can be.

It's a great time for hiking and scenic drives and below are all the resources you need to make your trip happen. Whether you want to know just why leaves change their colors or are looking for where to see specific shades, the answers are here.

So Why Do Leaves Change Colors?

The answer lies in one word: chlorophyll. It's the chemical that gives leaves their green color. Chlorophyll is also responsible for photosynthesis - a process where plants turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and sugar. Confused? Let's back up to the basics.

Trees take water from the ground using their roots. They also take carbon dioxide from the air. But trees need oxygen and glucose to grow big and healthy. In order to do that, they use sunlight to turn the water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and glucose. That's photosynthesis. And chlorophyll helps make it happen.

When summer ends and autumn begins, there is less sunlight since the days get shorter. This is an important hint for trees and other plants to prepare themselves for the winter. Since there isn't enough light and water during the winter for photosynthesis, trees go into rest-mode and will feed off food they have stored up over summer. While processes shut down, chlorophyll starts to disappear from the leaves, taking away the green color. As the green fades, the leaves show other colors that have been there all along - yellow and orange. They have been hidden all summer by chlorophyll and during the fall, it is their time to shine!

You're probably wondering about the other signature colors of autumn - red, purple, and brown. Well, in some trees, such as maples, glucose is trapped in the leaves after photosynthesis stops. That glucose is turned into a red color from the sunlight and the cool nights of autumn. The brown color of trees, such as oaks, is made from tannin - a waste product left in the leaves.

The brilliance of colors you see every fall is directly related to weather conditions. The brightest colors are seen when late summer is dry, and autumn has bright sunny days and cool evenings. A good supply of rainfall also keeps the leaves on trees longer and helps to enhance the color.

Frank Memkus (1884–1965)

Whirligig Entitled "America"

1938/42

Wisconsin

Wood and metal

"Made by Lithuanian immigrant Frank Memkus, America is a whirligig, a playful object designed to spin in a strong breeze. Whirligigs have been used from America's colonial beginnings as lively entertainments, scarecrows, or weather vanes. They became more complex, in terms of structure of meaning, during the 19th century. This early-20th-century example is both whimsical and utilitarian, made to honor this country in a gesture of pride and patriotism." (exhibit text)

A kinetic sculpture entitled Heureka by Jean Tinguely (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Tinguely) on the shore of Lake Zurich.

The sculpture is as much an auditory event as it is visual, with all the rusted whirrings of the gears, belts, wheels, and pulleys.

I found a video (alas, no sound) on YouTube, which conveys some of the effect. Watch the video all the way to the end, the last few seconds convey the scale of the machine.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8plV5trScw

It was interesting trying to photograph the sculpture, because there is so much going on. I decided to take a few shots of the gears I like the most. I found it impossible to take a picture of the entire machine that captured enough of the details that made it interesting.

Just now I browsed around Flickr to see if I could find a macro view of the sculpture I liked, and I like this one. flickr.com/photos/bskl/74556729/

Part of my final project for my analogue class entitled 'Distilling Thoughts: an investigation into genres'.

We had to look into a specific genre of photography and 'warp' it, somewhat. I chose portraiture.

My work investigates the insecurities we all possess. Through concealing the face of subjects, the people presented lose fragments of their identity. My main motive behind the action of concealing their faces is to expose the fact that we all have faults and fears which we wish to hide from society and those who are particularly close to us. We all have things to be ashamed of and sometimes we try to fool ourselves and we let things slip and allow people to see beyond our 'veil'.

My first book, entitled Shorebirds of Ireland will be in your shops soon!!!

The Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) is a species of typical owl (family Strigidae). Owls belonging to genus Asio are known as the eared owls, as they have tufts of feathers resembling mammalian ears. These "ear" tufts may or may not be visible. Asio flammeus will display its tufts when in a defensive pose. However, its very short tufts are usually not visible. The Short-eared Owl is found in open country and grasslands. The word flammeus is Latin for "flaming, or the color of fire"

The Short-eared Owl occurs on all continents except Antarctica and Australia; thus it has one of the largest distributions of any bird.

2 Week project entitled "Myth is a Female Moth". I loved the "Mortal Engines" books (Author-Philip Reeve). When I read on the brief that the piece could play with scale I though of making small models of the giant traction cities. I stoped myself from doing any research on the books or looking at any illustrations and just made it based on images created in my head while I was reading the books (over 4 years ago). It's meant to show a city being chased by another canabalistic city along the edge of the grand canyon...

It was a two week project but i experienced an unfortunate and strong bout of procrastination, so ended up making all of it in a bit of a rush in the two days before the end. The scenery is made from chipboard cut, cardboard, mod rock, clay and acrylic paint. The little cities are made from dismantled toy cars, flashing LEDs,corrugated card board, matchsticks and straws painted with acrylic.

From the official Bio

The Upper Crust played their first show in the back room of a Cambridge, Massachusetts bar one Monday night in 1994.

Not for a moment did they or anyone else imagine that-more than a decade later-they would be comfortably enshrined in

the pantheon of rock stardom, polishing their platform shoes to kick it up a notch with their newly remixed, remastered

collection of stellar hits “Cream of the Crust.”

The original band concept was simple and loaded with comic potential: Young fellows singing about the joys and sorrows

of the only life they knew, like numberless youths since the dawn of rock and roll… only these lads are filthy rich and

theirs is a life of appalling self-indulgence, entitlement and privilege. The result was seen in instant classics like “Let

Them Eat Rock,” “Little Lord Fauntleroy,” and “We're Finished With Finishing School.” Like any other concept band, the

odds against longevity seemed loaded. No one has been more surprised then they themselves to find that the public's

appetite and affection for the Upper Crust, far from diminishing, has grown more insatiable with every passing year.

It was not long before the band's image resolved into sharper focus, as they adopted the dress and personae of members of

the 18th century European aristocracy in powdered wigs and knee breeches, and the identities Jackie Kickassis (drums),

Lord Bendover (guitar, vocals) the Duc d'Istortion (guitars, vocals). Original members Lord Rockingham and the Marquis

du Rocque left to pursue other careers and were replaced by the vastly talented Count Bassie (bass, vocals).

The Crust appeared on Conan O'Brien, played with Aerosmith, earned accolades in national press (Vogue, GQ, etc.). They

released three studio CDs and one live CD on various independent labels. They won the love and devotion of an ever-

growing legion of fans, among them many music and show-business celebrities like Joan Jett, Steven Tyler and daughter

Liv, Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), Tenacious D, etc.; people who could appreciate the nuances of their art with its peculiar

blend of head-banging hard-rock, comedy, and theater.

Preferring the lavish comforts of their stately homes and disliking the hardships of the road, for several years they played

mainly East Coast shows and spot tours, where they would fly to England, New Orleans or Los Angeles for one or two

shows. In this way they succeeded in avoiding the demands of celebrity while enjoying its perquisites.

But now the time has come for them to claim their due, and with the aid of famed producers Sean Slade and Paul Q.

Kolderie, they've remixed and remastered a compilation of 18 of their greatest hits. Cream of the Crust is released in

collaboration with Redeye Distribution.

The band has been feverishly active since September, hitting such diverse markets as Raleigh, N.C., Milwaukee, Chicago,

Cleveland, Boston, Providence, R.I., New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore. Next, they contemplate a full West Coast

tour and a more detailed Southern itinerary, and are entertaining offers from European promoters.

A live Upper Crust DVD entitled “Horse & Buggery” will be issued by Reptilian Records of Baltimore in November

to celebrate the label's 17th anniversary.

An animated appearance on the Comedy Channel's “Code Name: Kids Next Door” is scheduled for this winter (date

to be determined).

Press activity is already swelling, with forthcoming spreads in several national publications.

The band will be doing extensive radio and press promotion is available for interviews, in-store appearances and all other

publicity.

The Civil War Monument, entitled Soldier at Rest, was designed by sculptor Henry H. Davis, was dedicated in the Morristown Green on July 4, 1871. The monument features an 8-foot full length white Quincy granite figure of a Civil War soldier surmounted atop a 50-foot white Quincy granite shaft, divided into three horizontal sections. At the bottom of the shaft on the front is a bas-relief medallion. The base of the shaft stands on a series of steps. A cannon stands at each corner of the base. The monument is enclosed with a wrought iron fence. Inscriptions on the sides of the shift list battles of the Civil War inlcuding Antietam, Vicksburg, Appomattox, Shilo, Wilderness, Malvern Hill, Roanoke, Winchester, Gettysburg, Atlanta, Donelson and Cold Harbor.

Morristown Green is a two and a half acre park in the center of Morristown and bound by Park Place, Bank Street and Speedwell Avenue. The ground, which dates back to 1715, became George Washington's first encampment in the winter of 1777. The land, originally owned by the Morristown Presbyterian Church, was purchased in 1816 by the trustees of the Morristown Green and maintained as a Common ever since.

Hi, All:

I’m back for a day or two. While I was down, I started work on pulling my Uncle Bill’s story together. I have so much stuff. I’ve scanned almost thirty of his letters home. I’ve also scanned letters from my grandmother to Bill, miscellaneous documents, a moving account of Bill’s memorial service, a letter from the chaplain who buried him in Chester and letters to my grandparents from the parents of Bill’s flight crew. The boys died when the Wellington bomber in which they were training ditched into the Irish sea during a training mission.

In January, I will be going to Archives Canada in Ottawa to pull the files on the whole flight crew, as well as the second world war records pertaining to Bill’s friend, Cam Devine, my father, Herb Barber, and Karen’s father, George Pepper. I will also pull the first world war files for my uncles, John and Art Barber, and my great uncle, Wilbert MacDonald. It’ll take a few days of research to go through all the files. I pulled the records for Bill and his crew once before…in early 2003. At that time I photocopied quite a few records, but there are more I should have obtained.

This set of pictures were taken at #1Y Depot in Halifax, just before each of the boys shipped overseas at various times early in 1944. They still hadn’t met each other at this point, and would not meet until they crewed up in May, 1944. These images are photocopies of originals which are in Ottawa. I will try to have the originals duplicated in high quality when I go to the archives.

You’ll see the boys’ formal photos in the flight crew link given above. What a difference.

Over the next month or so, I will post the letters and documents. I think you will find them an interesting account of life in the early 1940s. Bill did a lot of things in a matter of eight or nine months.

I hope you are transported by his story as I was.

George was born to Hiram and Ida Belle Van Every in Leamington, Ontario, on August 10, 1924. Before enlisting, he worked for Wigle Motors as a gas station attendant, W.H. Willson Drugs as a delivery boy and at H.J. Heinz as a ledger clerk. His favourite sport was baseball.

George enlisted at Windsor, Ontario, after which he attended the Pre-Aircraft Education Course at Brandon, Manitoba where he studied science, math, signals and aircraft recognition. Upon graduation, he reported to 2 Manning Depot, Brandon, Manitoba for basic training. He was assessed as good gunnery and radio operator material, and was sent to #5 Bombing and Gunner Training School in Dafoe. Saskatchewan. He also attended #2 Wireless School in Calgary, Alberta. From Calgary he went to #4 bombing and gunnery school at Fingal, Ontario, and #3 Air Gunner Training School in Three Rivers (Trois Rivieres) Quebec for advanced training

After landing in Britain on April 2, 1944, he was stationed at #3 Personnel Receiving Centre at Bournemouth, Dorset, to await advanced training posting. From Bournemouth he was stationed at No. 6 Observer Training School [6(O)AFU] Staverton, Glamorganshire in Wales

From Staverton, he moved to No. 83 Operations Training Unit at Peplow, close to Shrewsbury, in Shropshire. He was killed on a training mission on the night of July 22/23, 1944, and was buried at Blacon Cemetery, Chester, on August 8, 1944

George impressed his recruitment interviewer as tall and slight, alert, of average intellect, and excellent in appearance…an overall good lad and potentially good aircrewman. Originally, he wanted to be a pilot
