Mural entitled " Lumber Region of Mississippi" painted in 1940 by Donal H. Robertson. Unfortunately, this mural was (likely) painted over during post office renovations in the late 1960's. It is very likely to still be on the lobby wall, just under several coats of paint. I was lucky enough to get this image from the National Archives.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Rhine-Westphalia

North Rhine-Westphalia (German: Nordrhein-Westfalen, usually shortened to NRW, official short form NW) is the westernmost and - in terms of population and economic output - the largest Federal State of Germany. North Rhine-Westphalia has over 18 million inhabitants, contributes about 22% of Germany's gross domestic product and comprises a land area of 34,083 km (13,158 square miles). North Rhine-Westphalia is situated in the Western part of Germany and shares borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. It has borders with the German states of Lower Saxony to the North and Northeast, Rhineland-Palatinate to the Southwest and Hesse to the Southeast.

The capital city is Düsseldorf, and the largest city is Cologne (Köln). Other major cities are Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg, Oberhausen, Aachen, Bielefeld, Bonn, Bochum, Bottrop, Bergisch Gladbach, Mönchengladbach, Mülheim, Münster, Gelsenkirchen, Krefeld, Hagen, Hamm, Herne, Iserlohn, Leverkusen, Neuss, Paderborn, Recklinghausen, Remscheid, Siegen, Solingen, Witten and Wuppertal.

The state is centred on the sprawling Rhine-Ruhr urbanised region, which contains the cities of Düsseldorf, Bonn and Cologne as well as the Ruhr Area industrial complex. The Ruhr area consists of, among others, the cities of Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg, Bochum, Gelsenkirchen and Oberhausen.

The state's area covers a maximum distance of 291 km from north to south, and 266 km from east to west.

The total length of the state's borders is 1,645 km. The following countries and states have a border with North Rhine-Westphalia:

Belgium (99 km)

The Netherlands (387 km)

Lower Saxony (583 km)

Hessen (269 km)

Rhineland Palatinate (307 km)

For many people North Rhine-Westphalia is synonymous with industrial areas and agglomerating cities. But the largest part of the state is used for agriculture (almost 52%), forests cover 25%. The southern parts of the Teutoburg Forest are located in the northeast. In the southwest, Nordrhein-Westafalen shares in a small part of the Eifel, located on the borders with Belgium and Rheinland-Pfalz. The southeast is occupied by the sparsely populated regions of Sauerland and Siegerland. The northwestern areas of the state are part of the Northern European Lowlands.

The most important rivers that run at least partially through North Rhine-Westphalia include: Rhine, Ruhr, Ems, Lippe and Weser. The Pader, which runs only through the city of Paderborn, is considered the shortest river in Germany.

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia was established by the British military administration on 25 October 1946. Originally it consisted of Westphalia and the northern parts of the Rhine Province, both formerly belonging to Prussia. In 1947 the former state of Lippe was merged with North Rhine-Westphalia, hence leading to the present borders of the state.

Do we really live in a democracy? ---- Leben wir wirklich in einer Demokratie??

Yes, tomorrow all those entitled to vote will gather here in this district.

I then set photos from the Landsgemeinde myself

But actually I would also like to ask a question about the topic.

Are we currently living in democracies here in Western Europe, the USA etc.??

Yes they say it like that. But isn't it a little dishonest and the devil is in the details.

#&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

We are all equal before the law!

Everyone has freedom of speech!

Everyone has equal opportunities at birth!

etc etc etc .. . #&& &

I put that all in question and up for discussion here.

I often experience that people with less money or from financially disadvantaged circles do not enjoy these privileges undisputedly.

For the first time I'll say it like this:

We are far from living in a democracy as it is written in books, rather everything here corresponds to a "money aristocracy".

The ones that used to send scoundrels and the scoundrels would cut you down with a battle ax or a club have remained roughly the same.

Today the bad guys send you bad-letters, lawyers and hit you with your wallet.

90% of the so-called democratic governments are made up of those with the big fat wallets or their assistants and decide. If the people reject so-called suggestions from them, they come back with their own layers again and again until the people are tired and say yes !!!

What do you all mean?

bennoH. May 2023 GLARUS Switzerland

Was meint Ihr?

A fine Chinese pen and ink scroll painting, possibly 17th / 18th century, bearing signature for Wang Yian also known as Wang Yuanzhao (1598-1677), entitled 'The Scroll of Endless Stream and Mountains' with four characters underneath reading ' The Rare Collection from the Imperial Household Department (Neifu Zhenmi)', the painting with seal reading 'The Treasure for the Imperial Appreciation of Qianlong Emperor', the pale celadon jade toggle clasp reading' For the Imperial Appreciation of Qianlong Emperor' and 'The Landscape Scroll by Wang Yuanzhao' with original zitan wood case, the extremely long scroll finely drawn with continuous mountainous landscapes flanked at the near side with a narrow band of script and at the far end with a wider band of script, with twenty five various large and small printed red seal collectors marks, the majority of seals with imperial associations, translating as follows: 'Imperial Treasure Seen by Emperor Qianlong (Qianlong yulan zhibao)', 'Imperial Treasure Seen By Emperor Jiaqing (Jiaqing yulan zhibao)', 'Treasure of Connoisseurship from the Mansion of Heavenly Purity (Qianqing gong jiancang bao)', 'Imperial Treasure Seen by Emperor Xuantong (Xuantong yulan zhibao)', 'Qianlong's Connoisseurship (Qianlong jianshang)', 'Appraisal Seal of the Hall of Three Rarities (Sanxi tang jingjian xi)' and 'Bequeathed to Son and Grandson (Zisun)', Xuantong's Connoisseurship (Xuantong jianshang)' and 'Appraisal Seal of Study of Wuyi (Wuyi zhai jingjian xi)', 'The Seal of Zhang Junheng 1872-1927 (Zhang Junheng xi)', 'One of "Four Wang", the landscape painting masters in early Qing, a follower of Wang Jian / Wang Yuanzhao (Colophon by Wang Yuanqi - inscribed by Wang Yuangi {1642-1713})', 'Wang Yuanqi / Lutai, courtesy name', 'Post scripted by Zhao Zhixin {1662-1744} (Zhao Zhixin ba)', 'The Seal of Zhixin (Zhixin zhi yin)', 'Shen Fu, courtesy name (Shen Fu)', 'Yide tangli renjia' , 'Jian Zhai' , 'Lushi shangjian tushu' together with three other seals, probably belonging to private collectors of the late Qing. 918cm long overall including paper and cream brocade end borders and 24.5cm wide, the landscape section, 296cm long, the near end script band, 10cm long, the far end script, 78cm long. Condition Report:. In good condition commensurate with age with a few old minor repairs to edges. Wang Yian was one of the four most famous master landscape artists of the early Qing period. Born in one of the most prominent families in Taicang, Jiangsu province, he grew up in a privileged highly cultured environment. In 1633 Wang earned the second level juren degree and was appointed to a government position in Beijing. Using his family connections he then obtained a position as prefect of Lianzhou in Guangdong province in 1638. He stayed in this position until 1641, at which time he retired to his family estate where he built a retreat and devoted himself to literary and artistic endeavours. As a former student of Dong Qichang (1555-1636) and a member of the famous 'Nine Famous Friends of Painting', Wang subsequently became one of the most influential painters and theorists of the late 17th century. Together with Wang Shimin (1592-1680), Wang Hui (1637-1717) and Wang Yuanqi (1642-1715), Wang Yian is revered as one of the 'Four Wangs' who were anchors of the Orthodox school during the first sixty years of the Qing rule.

Pressemitteilung MMK

Reading Abbey Exhibition, preparatory work for joint exhibition with artist Keith Lawrence entitled "Journeying"

For the past six weeks I've been working at some new artworks based on Reading Abbey and the town's historic churches. The exhibition will be held in the middle of Reading near the site of its ancient Abbey ruins at Abbey Baptist Church whose foundations were laid in 1642 close to the Holy Brook. These illustrations/prints are still in their early stages. One tends to start a few things to see how certain ideas will work together. I hope to show a selection of about ten of these in September, it's great to look at buildings I've been familiar with one way or another throughout my adult life. I'm not idealising them in any way; I want to show Reading as the busy modern place it is a shopping Mecca, whose medieval past is somehow forgotten, and yet the towers of St Laurence, Mary Minster and the classical portico of St Mary's Castle Street remind one that this was not always the case. Over the past few weeks I've been drawing various people on their way to work on foot, bike or car to fit the theme of Journeying. Gradually the compositions are coming together. At this stage I'm blocking in colour so they appear rather jagged brash and angular in some ways. So far I've started about fourteen works. I have taken hundreds of photographs to aid me, and have studied some of the history in Reading Museum.

From top left St Giles (Church Street), St Laurence (Friar Street), St Laurence, Tower, Reading Abbey and Prison and St Mary Castle Street. Early colour map layouts for prints uncorrected.

I hope to cover some of the following themes in this series:-Reading Gaol/ Abbey Ruins/Contemporary Reading/Trades ancient modern cloth to computers/shopping People walking, cars on bikes/The Holy Brook/ The Kennet/ Ancient paths streets.

The massive Cluniac Abbey of Reading was founded by William of Malmesbury in 1121, many of the town's churches date back to this early period, however with the dissolution of the monestaries and the great upheavals of the C16 and C17 left Reading's ecclesiastical buildings forever changed. Unlike Oxford, Reading had no historic university (until 1892), and its town's history was shaped by trade and its important location on the road between London and Bath and the rivers Kennet and Thames.

Reading's prosperity has meant that its town churches were all heavily restored in the nineteenth century, St Laurence (also recently re-ordered), St Mary Minster (Butts) , Greyfriars and St Giles all have medieval origins and some remains. St Mary Castle Street (Episcopalian) 1798 was by its fine facade with six giant Corinthian columns and pediment is impressive. Its cupola was lost during last century. The portico is by H&N Briant. The church largely dates from 1840-42.

I started making a list in my diary entitled âThings I Have Been Silent About.â Under it I wrote: âFalling in Love in Tehran. Going to Parties in Tehran. Watching the Marx Brothers in Tehran. Reading Lolita in Tehran.â I wrote about repressive laws and executions, about public and political abominations. Eventually I drifted into writing about private betrayals, implicating myself and those close to me in ways I had never imagined.

[Azar Nafisi](http://azarnafisi.com/), author of the beloved international bestseller [Reading Lolita in Tehran](http://www.amazon.com/Reading-Lolita-Tehran-Memoir-Books/dp/081297106X), now gives us a stunning personal story of growing up in Iran, memories of her life lived in thrall to a powerful and complex mother, against the background of a countryâs political revolution. A girlâs pain over family secrets; a young womanâs discovery of the power of sensuality in literature; the price a family pays for freedom in a country beset by political upheavalâthese and other threads are woven together in this beautiful memoir, as a gifted storyteller once again transforms the way we see the world and âreminds us of why we read in the first placeâ (Newsday).

I met with and photographed [Azar Nafisi](http://azarnafisi.com/) for The Times in London she is a fantastic upbeat person....... very personable..... totally fascinating........... Im sure her new book......... [Things I Have Been Silent About](http://www.amazon.com/Things-Ive-Been-Silent-About/dp/1400063612) is well worth reading........ although I myself do not yet have a copy.

I was thinking of [Azar Nafisi](http://azarnafisi.com/) today as I was listening to reports about the jailing of another Iranian American woman........ [Roxana Saberi](http://freeroxana.net/) who has been arrested while reporting from Iran........ I have listened to her reporting many times both on the BBC and NPR ......... I felt sick when I heard she had been jailed for on trumped up charges spying and sentenced to 8 years...... I feel the new Obama administration's attempts to engage Iran are not wrong and anyway could hardly be less successful than President Bush's attempts at manipulation through isolation............. but I did feel slightly sick that the totally unjustified incarceration of this brave individual reporter by this awful theocracy......... just might just be brushed under the carpet to allow dialogue with the oppressive ayatollahs.

Lets try and engage with Iran but lets not forget [Roxana Saberi](http://freeroxana.net/).

This piece is entitled "self portrait of ones entire life". I executed this piece with the a theory I developed that is called Dimensionalism . This theory has its inspiration form my experiences with pre-seizure events for I have epilepsy. In this state I become detached from reality and see time in a different construct, that of a hyper intensity. A hyper awareness of a moment and everything that constructs it from sounds, thoughts, things tactile . While in these pre seizure states, some instances time is slowed down/speed up or frozen. While in other instances I am forced away form all comprehension of what is in my present environment and reality takes on a totally foreign existence where all has to be re learned.

For the viewers of my piece all of life is in dimensions and how one moves through these dimensions of either large dimensional constructs such as ones life or to the minute dimensional construct of a simple word. Thus giving the viewer this new perspective of time and space. The suspended animation of the piece is only dynamic as the viewer views the piece from the narrower sides form either end where a visible play of time sequencing exists and ones eye is drawn into the piece...

A perspective of a Dimesionalist where one has a view of a moment with a gods eye/time traveler or a pure energy source . From looking at a simple word to a memory one has. All is captured in dimensions. There are other branches of my theory that further portray my experiences. Demensionalising and facitile dimensionalism. These ideas also play with the constructs of how one sees time/moment.I hope to execute these ideas in the future...........

All these ideas/theories have a direct correlation with present day society...from the over abundance of information that is transferred by different technologies to the ways these technologies directly affect our existence and how it adds other dimensions of time to our lives.

I will be placing more info online in the future. and creating a temp website that fully explains all the details and shows examples of these theories as well as go into more details..

This Christmas bauble, entitled "Christmas Fan" depicting a fan tied with a bow was hand beaded with sequins and pins by me. I have a Christmas tradition. I bead one Christmas bauble for a select group of friends every year.

"Christmas Fan" is going to a friend of mine, who has a white Christmas tree which she decorates with gold and red coloured decorations. Her Christmas baubles always feature things that are either red or gold, or in this case both, with a gold fan with red ribbon on one side and a red fan tied with a gold ribbon on the other. Past baubles feature pointsettias or red and gold stars.

Each bauble is 25 centimetres in diameter and contain hundreds of sequins, varying in number depending upon the complexity of the image and the type of sequins I use. Most sequins in this bauble are 5mm in diameter, except the white background ones which are 8mm. Depending upon the colour of the sequin, I will use either a gold or a silver pin to attach it to the bauble. The white and black sequins all use silver pins, The gold and red sequins are affixed with gold pins.

Each bauble takes approximately 6 hours per side, and this is why my select group of friends only get one each year!

It is however, a labour of love which I do to pass the time throughout the year.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandevilla

Mandevilla, sometimes also called Dipladenia,[1] is a genus of plants. It consists of about 100 species, mostly tropical and subtropical flowering vines belonging to the family Apocynaceae, the Periwinkle family.

Mandevilla is native to Central and South America and many Mandevillas come originally from the Organ Mountains forests near Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The genus was named after Henry Mandeville (1773-1861), a British diplomat and gardener.[1]

Mandevillas develop spectacular flowers in warm climates. The flowers come in a variety of colours, including white, pink, yellow, and red. As climbers, Mandevillas can be trained against a wall or trellis to provide a leafy green and often flowering picture of beauty. They have a tendency to attract insects like mealybugs and scales.

While Mandevilla scabra is sometimes as an additive to the psychedelic drink Ayahuasca, there is no evidence that it is psychoactive in its own right.[2] It is, however, considered to be toxic.[3]

Museum de Fundatie Zwolle NL presents an exhibition entitled Giacometti-Chadwick, Facing Fear, to run from 22 September 2018 to 6 January 2019. The sculptures of Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) and Lynn Chadwick (1914-2003) are manifestations of the sense of fear and disillusionment that pervaded Europe during the Cold War period. Their work bids a final farewell to pre-war romanticism and aestheticism, and lands with both feet in the raw reality of the post-war world. While Giacometti reduced the human form to its bare essentials, Chadwick created powerful archetypal images of both people and animals. The exhibition includes more than 150 works. Never before has the work of Giacometti and Chadwick been so explicitly brought together.

Their paths first crossed in 1956, when Chadwick became the youngest person ever to win the Grand Prix for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale. With only six years’ experience as a sculptor, the British artist snatched the prize from Giacometti, the hot favourite, who was thirteen years older and already a major name in Paris. Giacometti would go on to win the prize in 1962, but which of the two men was awarded it in 1956 is less significant than the fact that these two particular sculptors were the front-runners at that time. Each of them was expressing, in his own individual way, the sense of deep-seated angst that overshadowed day-to-day life in Europe in the fifties and sixties: the fear of a global nuclear disaster that would wipe out human civilisation.

Alberto Giacometti is among the most significant figures in the whole field of modern European sculpture. A member of a notable family of Swiss artists, he moved to Paris in 1922 and would remain there for the rest of his life, working as a sculptor, painter and graphic artist. After training with Émile-Antoine Bourdelle, he discovered modernism and so-called ‘primitive’ ethnographic art of Africa and Oceania. In response to these influences, his work became more abstract. In the early thirties, his Surrealist sculptures expressing subconscious emotions created a furore. From 1935, however, personal psychological tensions triggered a crisis in his life and work that led to a return to the human figure. Initially, his portraits and figures became both increasingly tiny and more and more attenuated. This thinness was to remain the most distinctive feature of Giacometti’s art. After the Second World War, he began to create the elongated, emaciated figures that would bring him worldwide fame. In all their attenuation, they reduce humanity to its very essence and appear both vulnerable and enigmatic.

In the early fifties, up-and-coming artist Lynn Chadwick managed to dislodge Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth from their dominant position in the field of British sculpture. Born in London, Chadwick had started his career as a technical draughtsman and exhibition stand designer. He took an equally constructional approach to his sculpture: rather than model his human and animal figures in clay or wax, he constructed them by welding steel rods together to create an armature and then filling in the gaps with a kind of cement. The angularity of the work being produced by him and other young British artists was described in 1952 as ‘the geometry of fear’, a reference to the constant dread of nuclear annihilation. Chadwick’s apocalyptic Dancers and stoical Watchers gave powerful expression to this sense of angst. From the early seventies, he broadened his repertoire to include subjects that seem to restore the sovereignty of the human spirit. Sculptures like Cloaked Figure and Sitting Couple no longer look threatening, but emanate a sense of composure and invulnerability.

Giacometti’s pre-war work influenced Chadwick’s development and the two men were keenly aware of each other’s presence. In addition to the vast differences, there are also many similarities between their oeuvres. Giacometti-Chadwick, Facing Fear is the product of close cooperation with the Fondation Marguerite et Aimé Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence and the Chadwick Estate and Blain|Southern gallery in London.

Armory Center for the Arts is pleased to present an exhibition entitled Music for Hoarders, a video projection and installation by Los Angeles-based artist Dawn Kasper that documents a live "visual poem performance action" of the same name. Music for Hoarders, organized by Armory curator Irene Tsatsos, will be on display from February 12 – May 13, 2012 in the Armory’s Pasadena Art Alliance Gallery. A public opening reception will take place on Saturday, February 11 from 7-9pm in conjunction with Armory’s opening of simultaneous solo exhibitions by Richard Jackson, Nicolas Grider, and Jocelyn Foye. The exhibitions by Kasper, Grider, and Foye coincide with the Armory’s lead exhibition, Richard Jackson’s Accidents in Abstract Painting, the Armory, creating an opportunity for visitors to reflect on the shared conceptual and/or formal considerations between and among the works.

Originally performed in 2010 at Honor Fraser Gallery in Culver City, California, the performance Music for Hoarders featured a unique musical score designed specifically for the gallery environment. The structure of their composition was determined according to a performer’s spontaneous interactions with a large and unwieldy set of found everyday objects that had been stacked in the middle of the space. Musicians employed an aleatoric technique; they played whenever an object was touched, each musician assigned a sound to that object, each sound was performed during the duration of the object's use, and the sound assisted in informing the performer’s movements during the duration of the performance. The improvised musical interpretations of everyday objects compounded throughout the performance; the resulting full, layered sound, “hoarded” in the gallery, was meant to invoke the idea and physical sense of the hoarding of human emotions. The Armory will present documentation of this performance in a single-channel video installation with chairs and a new painting directly on the wall.

About the Artist

The work of Los Angeles-based performance artist Dawn Kasper addresses a deep fascination with the subjects of vulnerability, desire, process, and the construction and location of meaning. She critiques the corporate aspects of our culture by examining emotions – such as fear, panic, hate, envy, lust – through which advertisers, news media, and other commercial entities, manipulate us, and in doing so strives to create a place of shared camaraderie. Kasper often performs in a premeditated yet spontaneous manner, generally using props, slapstick comedy, and monologue to ask fundamental questions such as What is existence? or What is a physical object?. She then attempts to answer these life questions, and more, while inhabiting different characters and personas, each differentiated through costume and costume changes, with all shifts taking place before the audience.

The environments in which Kasper performs, created through the use of props, musical instruments, and diverse personae, provide what she calls an “open-air laboratory (of thought),” creating a theatrical space while also doubling as a platform for living sculpture. “Everything is in play,” she says, “and everything is mobile.” Kasper often repeats actions and gestures in her performances, invoking a feeling of ritual or ritualistic behavior. Kasper’s performances are often extremely physical – her various characters often construct a sculpture or installation, marking her study into being and process, and serving as an illustration of her findings.

Dawn Kasper has performed and exhibited internationally at galleries and institutions including the Migros Museum Für Genenwartskunst in Zurich and LISTE Basel, both in Switzerland; Art Basel Art Positions and David Castillo Gallery, both in Miami; Newman Popiashvili Gallery, Leo Koenig Inc., Projekte, and Art in General, all in New York; Copy Gallery, Philadelphia; and Anna Helwing Gallery, Circus Gallery, J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Hammer Museum, and Museum of Contemporary Art, all in Los Angeles. Kasper is one of the acting co-directors of the performance and experimental art venue Human Resources in Los Angeles.

The performance series, entitled The Market of Toys, was created specifically for Times Square. It is composed of four distinctive minimalistic single-element actions representative of Akademia Ruchu’s 40 years of experience working in the public realm. These austere, participatory interventions will simultaneously contrast and emphasize the vibrant character of Times Square and its multitude of visitors. The performances will be complemented by videos chronicling some of the collective’s seminal performances. These 30 second videos will play every 5 minutes on 10 CEMUSA newspaper kiosks located between 34th-48th Streets. A printed exhibition in the form of a newspaper documenting Academia Ruchu’s deep history of socially and politically driven public performances will be handed out to visitors.

Akademia Ruchu (The Academy of Movement) has been a political sounding board in Poland since its establishment in 1973 in Warsaw. Operating at the juncture of theater, performances, political actions, and anonymous interventions in the public realm which and with the involvement of spectators.

Mural entitled "Settler Fighting Alligator from Rowboat" painted in 1947 by Joseph D. Myers. Thanks to the Supervisor for taking the picture.

I nearly entitled this, "Plan 'B' ", as, because of grey, windy, drizzly weather at the start of my holiday, I spent most of the first week going round churches in the S. Lakes, photographing any stained glass windows that caught my eye. This had definitely not been my first intention for the holiday!

The rather ornate East window in the delightful old, Parish Church of St. Michael and All Angels in Hawkshead, depicts Jesus' Ascension into heaven, fourty days after his Resurrection, witnessed by the Disciples, (minus Judas, who betrayed him.) .The brochure notes that this window replaced a plain rectangular window (probably like Grasmere Church still has), and that for modern taste, the new one (1895) does not match the simple dignity of the old building. I couldn't agree more, as I'm not very keen on it either, but I posted it as a foil to the next which is of Grasmere.

The Nativity window in the South West corner of the Church is a very different style and one of my favourites, but I'll save that for Christmas time.

Detail of Ragamala miniature entitled 'Kanada ragini'. Text below shows an English transliteration of this spelled 'Kanro Raug'. Shows Krishna and a companion sitting on a roof terrace, while another figure can be seen in a boat on the river below.

Ragamala paintings are images which depict, in physical form, the 'modes' or scales used in Indian Classical Music, known as ragas. Usually accompanied by an inscription or poem, they elucidate the season and time of day in which a raga was meant to be performed, as well as its mood, and often portray the Hindu deities with which they are individually associated. The concept may have originally come about through the use of personification as an aide memoire for musicians, which then developed into physical imagery.

This collection, which is purportedly called the Raga Kalpadruma, originates from Jaipur in Northern India and has the description of the Raga written in Sanskrit on the back of each image. Including some Bengali and English text as well, the collection also contains a few pages from another Indian music manuscript, also written in Sanskrit. It was gifted to the university by Dwarkanath Tagore (1794-1846), grandfather of the poet laureate Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) and is one of two sets of Ragamala paintings in the Oriental Manuscripts Collection, the other being Or.Ms 114.

February 12, 2022: I just stumbled onto a YouTube video called 10 SIGNS YOU ARE DEALING WITH AN #EVIL PERSON, & I can see how I might fit the bill in some ways.

The 1st 2 signs says an evil person #lies to & #manipulates those around them. I find I’ve lied & manipulated things with my #family, with my #Mum specifically, but I do feel absolutely horrible about it. An evil person doesn’t feel #remorse. But I’ve done this before too & just fall into the same unforgivable pattern. A good person would break free from their bad habits. But I keep on #eating junk & dangerously #overspending. I can’t be trusted.

I’ve just dug myself into so much shit, it’s so deep in my life, & I’ve ruined so much in the lives of those who mean the most to me. This year is no different. I hate myself so much for how irresponsible I’ve been. Hate is another point on the list, but I don’t hate others though, just myself.

I’ve fucked up my schooling, I rarely make art, my house is a mess & my Mom’s is now too, I sleep so much, I haven’t worked in forever, I’ve ignored my strata, ignored responsibilities that others do everyday without issue. I hate that I’m even writing this because it feels like I’m trying to create a poor me narrative, to move back to manipulating people into pitying me.

My Mom knows something is wrong, that I’ve long been #depressed. But is that just a lie too? I try to hide it from her but she knows. The #depression has turned me into a horrible person, & I’ve tried hiding it, which is another sign of an evil person.

I definitely don’t feel #entitled… which is also on the list… it says evil people feel entitled & I see how it could look like I am that way. My Mum has accused me of being entitled before & I know that people I’ve disappointed also view me as so #irresponsible. My lack of love for myself makes it impossible for other to ever love or #trust me.

I start things & never finish them. Like therapy & I haven’t even finished taking down the #Christmas tree at Mum’s. It’s so big, it’s something she can’t do because of her poor health. So much yard work. Housework.

I’m a burden & just this huge drain on everything good. I ruin everything I touch.

Wally Blunt was born to Oscar and Bessie Hannah Blunt in Scotland and raised for a time in England (Worcester, I believe). When he was quite young, the family moved to Vancouver British Columbia. Before the war, Wally worked, first as a truck driver for Eagle Times Delivery, and secondly as a worker in the veneering section of B.C. Plywoods. His favoured hobbies included skating, football, baseball, swimming, mechanics and photography

Before enlistment, Wally was a trainee in the Pre-Enlistment Education Program at Seaview High School in Vancouver where he brought his English, Science and Mathematics knowledge and skills to Grade X level. He was first stationed at #3 Manning Depot in Edmonton Alberta, but was moved to #8 Manning Depot in Souris, Manitoba. From Souris, Wally went to #7 Service Flying School in Fort MacLeod, Alberta, and then to #4 Initial Training School in Edmonton, Alberta. His next Canadian postings were at #6 Elementary Training School in Prince Albert Saskatchewan, #2 Manning Depot in Brandon, Manitoba, #7 Bombing and Gunner School in Paulson, #1 Central Navigational School in Rivers Manitoba Manitoba and # 3 Air Gunner Training School in Three Rivers. Quebec.

Wally disembarked at Liverpool on March 14, 1944, and was immediately shipped to #3 Personnel Receiving Centre, Bournemouth, Dorset to await his next posting. From Bournemouth, he attended #1 (Observer) Advanced Fly Unit in Wigtown, Scotland. On May 23, 1944, Wally arrived at #83 Operations Training Unit, Peplow, Shropshire (near Shrewsbury). He was killed on a training mission when the bomber in which he was acting as bomb-aimer, ditched in the Irish Sea on the night of July 22/23, 1944. Wally was buried at Blacon Cemetery in Chester

Gehenna was formed in January, 1993 by original members Sanrabb, Dolgar, and Sir Vereda. Their first demo, entitled Black Seared Heart, was recorded between the 3rd and 7 June 1993 in Soundsuite Studios, and was released as a cassette. Around this same time, a 7" titled Ancestors of The Darkly Sky was released by Necromantic Gallery Productions.

Shortly after the release of these two recordings, Sir Verada left the band due to legal problems, and was replaced by Dirge Rep. The band also enlisted Svartalv as bass player during this time.

Up until this time, the band had yet to play any live shows. It was not until February, 1994 that the band made their live debut.

In 1994 Sarcana joined the band and added keyboards to the mix.

In March, 1994, the band entered Soundsuite Studios to record their debut album, First Spell. It was released as an MCD on Head Not Found Records. First Spell generated a larger fan-base for the band, and led to them signing 2-album record deal with Cacophonous Records.

In 1995, Gehenna released their second full-length, Seen Through The Veils of Darkness. This record featured a guest appearance by Garm of Arcturus and Ulver doing vocals on the track Vinterriket. This release cemented Gehenna as a strong band in the black metal scene.

Shortly before the release of Gehenna's next record, Svartalv left the band. Noctifier, who had joined the band as Svartalv's replacement, was unable to meet the demands of being a member of Gehenna. After 6 months, during the recording sessions of Gehenna's third release, Noctifier left the band.

E.N. Death, a friend of the band, was asked to sit in as a session bassist to finish the recording. After also joining the band on tour, he was asked to join the band full-time.

In 1996, Gehenna's third release, Malice, was released on Cacophonous Records.

Sarcana and Dirge Rep both left the band shortly after a touring in support of Malice. Damien was added as Sarcana's replacement on keyboards and Blod took up drumming duties.

With the new members, Gehenna's sound changed a bit. Blod brought a death metal background with him, and it influenced Gehenna in a much heavier way.

In 1998, Gehenna signed to Moonfog Productions and immediately released an EP Deadlights, which was a sample to their fans of what to expect from the newer Gehenna material. This EP was later followed by their Moonfog debut LP, Adimiron Black.

During their tenure with Moonfog Productions, Gehenna would also release Murder 2000 and WW 2005.

In late 2005 Gehenna signed with ANP Records.

In December, 2007, Gehenna announced that the previous contract signed with ANP Records was cancelled and that Gehenna signed with Norwegian based "Indie Recordings". Dirge Rep was also announced as a full-time member.

According to a message posted by the band on their official MySpace page in June 2009, "Gehenna is currently writing new material for a yet untitled album. We hope to have it recorded by the end of 2009. Some work / track titles are : The Blooding, Melek, Stillborn, Claws of Obedience, Death's Emblem, Liber Torquere (Leviathan Rising)". This was obviously a false alarm, but in august 2013 Indie records announced this: "GEHENNA TO RELEASE "UNRAVEL" OCTOBER 14TH! Having kept us waiting since their 2005 release of “WW”, “Unravel” is Gehenna’s latest addition to the Norwegian black metal experience. It carries the spirit from WW, and twists it to confront a more post-apocalyptic era – rather than the ragnarok of the bourgeoise, the individual, and the failings of western society – Gehenna faces 21st century existence head on. Welcome to my latest Flickr series entitled "Quintessential Ireland". During our honeymoon, my wife and I stopped in Kinsale, County Cork. While walking through the bustling fishing village, I stumbled upon the studio of Giles Norman, an Irish B&W landscape artist. His work was an inspiration for this series.

This series will include pictures from all over Ireland including Dublin, Kilkenny, Kinsale, Cobh, Kenmare, Killarney, Galway, Doolin, Dingle, Cashel, Blarney, etc.

In this series, I will have photos of the majestic scenery in Ireland such as Slea Head on the Dingle Peninsula and the Cliffs of Moher, as well as scenes I associate with Ireland such as boat scenes, pubs, and castles. I hope you like this series as much as I enjoyed putting it together!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Rhine-Westphalia

2 Week project entitled "Myth is a Female Moth". I loved the "Mortal Engines" books (Author-Philip Reeve). When I read on the brief that the piece could play with scale I though of making small models of the giant traction cities. I stoped myself from doing any research on the books or looking at any illustrations and just made it based on images created in my head while I was reading the books (over 4 years ago). It's meant to show a city being chased by another canabalistic city along the edge of the grand canyon...

It was a two week project but i experienced an unfortunate and strong bout of procrastination, so ended up making all of it in a bit of a rush in the two days before the end. The scenery is made from chipboard cut, cardboard, mod rock, clay and acrylic paint. The little cities are made from dismantled toy cars, flashing LEDs,corrugated card board, matchsticks and straws painted with acrylic.

The window on the south side of the Baptistry, entitled ‘Nativity’, was designed by John Piper (1903-1992) and made by David Wasley.

It was given to Iffley Church in 1995 by Myfanwy Piper in memory of her husband

The idea was taken from an Elizabethan wall painting in Shulbrede Priory in Sussex. The Latin words put into the mouths of the birds are: COCK - Christus natus est (Christ is born), GOOSE - Quando? Quando? When? When?), CROW -In hac nocte (On this night), OWL - Ubi? Ubi? (Where? where?), Lamb -Bethlehem! Bethlehem! The sounds of the Latin words resemble the noises made by the animals and birds. Underneath is a line from Christopher Smart: “Let man and beast appear before him and magnify his name together”.

The window has a dual motif. There are the birds and the lamb proclaiming the birth of Christ, and there is the Tree of Life round which they are grouped. The idea that on the night of Christ's Nativity birds and animals gained the power of speech was a widespread medieval legend. The Tree of Life is referred to in the Book of Genesis but also in the Book of Revelation. “On either side of the river there stood a Tree of Life which yielded twelve crops of fruit, one for each month of the year. The leaves of the trees serve for the healing of the nations, and every accursed thing shall disappear.”

Alternatively it may be seen as a window of the Creation. It has an immediate appeal through the passionate intensity of its colours, the slight touch of humour and the joy it expresses in the natural world.

Alternatives to Investor-State Arbitration in a Multipolar World

By Markus Wagner

The session entitled “Alternatives to Investor-State Arbitration in a Multipolar World” and convened by Jason Yackee addressed potential reforms and improvements to international investment law.

Céline Lévesque from the University of Ottawa spoke about the possibility to make greater use of ADR in international investment law, specifically from the perspective of states. Her remarks focused on how states could – even at a relatively late stage of a dispute – avert the costly and time-consuming process of investment arbitration, involving disputes ranging from what would be perceived to be meritorious or unmeritorious claims. Such settlements are themselves not without costs (economic and political) and legal obstacles, but recent statistics show that the number of settlements is increasing. Even with respect to unmeritorious claims, there may be multiple opportunities for states to avoid drawn-out processes and avoid unnecessary costs, either by curbing the dispute in its entirety or at least by limiting the scope of the dispute (this could be achieved by a neutral assessment early on in the process). Professor Lévesque suggested that treaties should be adjusted to reflect these options.

Cliff Minjiao Chi, Associate Professor of International Law from Xiamen University Law School / China, discussed the opportunities to make use of domestic institutions for purposes of international investment law. While this opportunity is dependent on the underlying bilateral investment treaty (BIT), a number of reasons militate in favor of using domestic institutions. The first generation of China’s BITs allowed for both international and domestic dispute resolution. China’s current BITs allow for a broader use of international investment arbitration, while still retaining the opportunity for domestic dispute resolution, either through the court system or through administrative procedures. Some of these BITs make mandatory the exhaustion of administrative review procedures before being able to pursue arbitration on the international level.

Andrea K. Bjorklund (UC-Davis School of Law) addressed the opportunity that state to state arbitration may offer an alternative to the current investor-state arbitration system. Although the US – Australia BIT has famously adopted such a system, this has not developed into a larger trend. Nevertheless, if such a system were to be implemented more widely a number of questions arise. If such a system were to be implemented, such questions include who the state would act for (whether it asserts its own rights, the rights of the investor, some shared right), who would be responsible for compensation, what the remedies would be (prospective such as the remedies in place at the WTO or retrospective such as compensation) and who would be the beneficiary of such remedies, i.e. the investor or the state. Whatever the result of these questions, such a parallel mode of dispute settlement would thus require rules as to how parallel proceedings would complement each other.

Barry Appleton, founder and partner of Appleton & Associates International Lawyers, analyzed the opportunity of an appellate mechanism in international investment law, similar to the system of the WTO. Barry Appleton pointed out that this would require a fundamental amendment of the current system with its fragmented nature. Stepping back from this current debate however, Appleton addressed what he perceives to be the real challenge. In his view, the real problem arises not from the result of investor-state arbitration, but rather from an improper interpretation of international investment law (by taking account of the applicable rules of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties or the ILC Articles on Responsibility of States for Internationally Wrongful Acts) and the lack of a minimum standard of qualification for international arbitrators.

The subsequent discussion centered on the nature of international investment law, whether there should be a “fork in the road” provision, mechanisms to improve the quality of the arbitrators and counsel and the interface between international investment law and other fields, such as international trade law and international finance.

The panel brought to light challenges for devising alternatives to the current system of international investment arbitration with its focus on dispute settlement between a state and an investor. As the panelists and the discussion made clear, the likelihood of the current system becoming displaced is slim to nonexistent. However, it also became apparent that the current system does not reflect the panoply of issues surrounding international investment law.

Markus Wagner is Associate Professor at the University of Miami School of Law and focuses his research in international economic law and the law of armed conflict. His latest publications include Conceptualizing the Shapeshifting Nature of Investment Law(yers) and Autonomy in the Battlespace: Independently Operating Weapon Systems and the Law of Armed Conflict.

This painting is entitled Mining America (Diptych) by Joyce Werwie Perry that currently hangs in the Westmoreland County Museum of American Art in Greensburg, PA. When I looked through the door of the room where it hangs it spoke to me in a visceral way. They didn't have to be miners. They could have been shop workers, railroad workers or a crew of men on any job anywhere. I looked over the bunch of them half expecting to see either one of my Grandfathers looking back at me. Or this could have been a group shot of any machine shop I've worked in over the last forty-four years. although there would be more fatties and about half of them would be wearing camo of some kind.
