Kerepesi Cemetery (Hungarian: Kerepesi úti temető or Kerepesi temető, official name: Fiumei úti nemzeti sírkert, i.e. "Fiume Road National Graveyard") is the most famous cemetery in Budapest. It is one of the oldest cemeteries in Hungary which has been almost completely preserved as an entity.

Happy Halloween, everyone!
Another one from the great photowalk with Flickr friends at an abandoned sanatorium back in March this year.
Before (or after) reading my description, please check this out:

In one of the buildings there was this one wing where artists had been given the opportunity to "decorate" the rooms with art installations. Actually all of them had come up with something more or less creepy, some had addressed the fact that this had been a hospital once, others had gone for a more general "horror" approach. Like this room. My first impression was that of a horror movie like "Blair Witch Project", but actually this reminds me as much, actually much more, of a creepy adventure game - minus the puzzles, occasional jump scares, and "real" ghosts [well, "real"... ;-)]. My title, the first part of it, is borrowed from a favourite adventure game series of mine, "Dark Fall" (created by Cornwall-based game designer Jonathan Boakes). I played his first game, "Dark Fall: The Journal", then described as "Myst with ghosts", back in 2002, and was an instant fan ;-). Actually I didn't find this (or any of the other "art rooms") too scary, the sun shone outside, birds were singing, doors and windows were wide open, people were there, so everything was just fine - but what I found really unsettling here is the clouded mirror in the left corner. In German we call clouded glass / mirrors "blind", and blind this mirror was. Or was it? Just because I couldn't see my (not that I actually tried to) or the room's reflections doesn't mean that whatever is behind that mirror can't see the room. Or us. Shiver ;-)
The first of two door captures for 2DWF's theme "Door(s) / Puerta(s)". The other will be rather spooky as well, but was taken at another abandoned place. Stay tuned!

Falls Ihr heute Halloween feiert: viel Spaß dabei ;-)

Unity in Diversity
Although we are all parts and parcels of the same Supreme Lord, we have divided up this Earth, declaring, “This is my country! This is your country!”
Even though we are all individuals, we all depend upon the same sun and we all breathe the same air. This is the principle of unity in diversity. Unity refers to the fact that we are all parts and parcels of the same Supreme Lord , the father of all; and diversity refers to our eternal individual natures. Because this is the eternal reality, we will only find peace and happiness in this reality. Unity in diversity will have no meaning if people have no faith in the Supreme God, or love for Him and all living entities.
Based on the feeling of unknown forces pushing back on you.
The scene was created using a mixture of flash guns placed on stands along with smoke pellets.
SILENCE by Edgar Allan Poe
There are some qualities-some incorporate things,
That have a double life, which thus is made
A type of that twin entity which springs
From matter and light, evinced in solid and shade.
There is a two-fold Silence- sea and shore-
Body and soul. One dwells in lonely places,
Newly with grass o'ergrown; some solemn graces,
Some human memories and tearful lore,
Render him terrorless: his name's "No More."
He is the corporate Silence: dread him not!
No power hath he of evil in himself;
But should some urgent fate (untimely lot!)
Bring thee to meet his shadow (nameless elf,
That haunteth the lone regions where hath trod
No foot of man,) commend thyself to God!

Although it looks more like an entity seen through a microscope than a telescope, this rounded object, named NGC 2022, is certainly no alga or tiny, blobby jellyfish. Instead, it is a vast orb of gas in space, cast off by an ageing star. The star is visible in the orb's centre, shining through the gases it formerly held onto for most of its stellar life.
When stars like the Sun grow advanced in age, they expand and glow red. These so-called red giants then begin to lose their outer layers of material into space. More than half of such a star's mass can be shed in this manner, forming a shell of surrounding gas. At the same time, the star's core shrinks and grows hotter, emitting ultraviolet light that causes the expelled gases to glow.
This type of object is called, somewhat confusingly, a planetary nebula, though it has nothing to do with planets. The name derives from the rounded, planet-like appearance of these objects in early telescopes.
NGC 2022 is located in the constellation of Orion (The Hunter).

This mandala-like image began as a photo of the reflection of the upper branches of a tree on the river, backlit by the rising sun. I mirrored and copied the image both horizontally and vertically, creating a double bi-lateral symmetry. I love the delicate, lace-like quality of the image, and how it suggests the presence of some sort of celestial entity.
I am putting this photo on Flickr for a reason, the barbaric practice of trapping. Here in Alaska, I am definately in the minority when it comes to the trapping of fox.
In this photo, a Red Fox walks along the snow covered tundra with a leg hold trap attached to its front leg. The anchor chain, attached to a leather strap, broke away from the anchor point. As you can see in the photo, the trap is caked in snow, weighing down the fox's leg.
I watched this fox over a period of three months. As the photo shows, the fox is still at a healthy weight and its fur is full. I watched as it hunted and tried to jump and dive on prey under the snow. The weight of the trap pulled the fox to the left and it was obvious that the landing was very painful. As the weeks went on, the fox lost weight and its eyes were very red in color. On one occasion, I saw it eating the seeds of grasses sticking up from the snow. I do know that others working in the area were feeding the fox scraps of food. I asked the local Environmental entity to either put the fox out of its misery or capture it and remove the trap. Their reply was that in the area the fox is located, they are not allowed to interfere with the natural injuries to wildlife. I told them that a manmade trap is not natural, but they said they are not allowed, and told me that I am not allowed to as well.
While photographing this fox, I was in tears much of the time. It was very hard to watch the fox get weaker and skinnier. However, this story does have a happy ending of sorts. In late winter, (March) the fox ran by me with no trap on its leg. The fox's front leg fell off at the knee and it was finally free of the trap. The fox looked like it was gaining weight and its eyes were not red anymore. It was agile and running as if it had all four legs. I can only imagine the pain this poor fox suffered over the three months with the trap attached. No pain killers, no warm bed, no one to bring it meals, it survived on its own. This is one tough fox!

Spring-heeled Jack is an entity in English folklore of the Victorian era. The first claimed sighting of Spring-heeled Jack was in 1837. Later sightings were reported all over Great Britain and were especially prevalent in suburban London, the Midlands and Scotland.
There are many theories about the nature and identity of Spring-heeled Jack. This urban legend was very popular in its time, due to the tales of his bizarre appearance and ability to make extraordinary leaps, to the point that he became the topic of several works of fiction.
Spring-heeled Jack was described by people who claimed to have seen him as having a terrifying and frightful appearance, with diabolical physiognomy, clawed hands, and eyes that "resembled red balls of fire". One report claimed that, beneath a black cloak, he wore a helmet and a tight-fitting white garment like an oilskin. Many stories also mention a "Devil-like" aspect. Others said he was tall and thin, with the appearance of a gentleman. Several reports mention that he could breathe out blue and white flames and that he wore sharp metallic claws at his fingertips.

Not an obvious shot to post from Bangkok but this was one of the first I took as the Amanda Levete Architects designed Central Embassy Shopping complex was very close to my hotel.
Those familiar with the interior of the Birmingham Selfridges might spot a similarity. This isn't a coincidence as Amanda Levete was previously one of the Partners of Future Systems.

From the ALA website : "Central Embassy brings a distinguishing new silhouette in the city, one that opens out both to the street and the skyline, and extends an invitation to the people of Bangkok and the world beyond.
Located within the former gardens of the British Embassy, along Ploenchit Road, Bangkok’s primary commercial artery, the 1.5 million sq ft mixed use project merges a seven storey luxury retail podium and a 27 storey five star Park Hyatt hotel tower into a cohesive, architectural entity.
The hotel and shopping mall are bound together using the notion of a continual looped form to give a more intuitive merging between plinth and tower and between the programmes."

Today is Earth Day, my favorite day of the year, and one of the most important. I've been reflecting deeply on the fact that the earth itself is a living, breathing entity. She exhales oxygen, and the ocean waves are her dance. When the light catches on hundreds of leaves glistening in the wind, or when the water sparkles at you—that's her saying hello. Maybe even showing off a little. She is beautiful beyond description and beyond the shortcomings of crude words. Without her, we are not. Her molten heart beats as one with ours. We are part of her.
And here I try to clumsily string together words to describe to you how important Earth is. How magnificent. And how we each must make efforts, every single day, to help her rather than hurt her. Every effort—whether you deem it large or small—makes a difference. Every effort we all make matters. But we all have to care. We have to care on a fundamental, innate level. As the Lorax said, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.”
I believe in the power of caring. I believe in the power of recognition. I believe we can change our ways and live less selfishly and more selflessly for the good of our breathtaking planet, and for the good of those who come after we have long left this place behind.
Thank you, Kristi, for being my beautiful muse in the chilly spring storm today to help me capture this image. A heart that glows as green as the earth. In unison with it.

Looking at this Hubble image makes me want to eat cotton candy in the shape of an octopus. 🐙👀
But, the galaxy pictured in this @NASAHubble image has an especially evocative name: the Medusa merger. What do you think of when you look at it?
Often referred to by its somewhat drier designation of NGC 4194, this was not always one entity, but two. An early galaxy consumed a smaller gas-rich system, throwing out streams of stars and dust into space. These streams, seen rising from the top of the merged galaxy, resemble the writhing snakes that Medusa, a monster in ancient Greek mythology, famously had on her head in place of hair, lending the object its intriguing name.
The legend of Medusa also held that anyone who saw her face would transform into stone. In this case, you can feast your eyes without fear on the center of the merged galaxy, a region known as Medusa's eye. All the cool gas pooling here has triggered a burst of star formation, causing it to stand out brightly against the dark cosmic backdrop.
The Medusa merger is located about 130 million light-years away in the constellation of Ursa Major (the Great Bear).
