Soldiers of the Utah Guard’s 624th Engineers Return from Afghanistan

 

The approximately 140 soldiers of the Utah National Guard’s 624th Engineer Company, 1457th Engineer Battalion, return to Utah from their 12-month deployment to Afghanistan Thursday, April 25, via charter aircraft at the Utah Air National Guard Base in Salt Lake City.

 

The 624th is based in Springville, with detachments in Price and Vernal. Its mission in Afghanistan was to perform vertical construction (structures and buildings) in the U.S. Central Command area of operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

 

Twenty-seven babies (25 single births and two sets of twins) were born to wives of 624th Soldiers during the unit’s deployment to Afghanistan. These 25 Soldiers (15 of whom are first-time fathers) will be seeing their infant children for the first time on Thursday.

 

Soldiers arrived from overseas at Fort Hood, Texas, earlier this month and have been undergoing demobilization processing.

Lauren Sefcik Anderson, Assistant Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is seen in her lab with her student Tyler Fruneaux '14 who recently won first place in the Research Paper Competition at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). As winner, he will represent the entire Mid-Atlantic Region at the National Meeting of AIChE in November 2014. The work he presented is part of his Honors Thesis Research in chemical engineering.

Virginia Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the West Point-based 237th Engineer Company, 276th Engineer Battalion, 329th Regional Support Group conduct mine detection and clearance training with the Finnish Army’s Karelia Brigade during Exercise Arctic Forge 25, Feb. 24, 2025, near Kouvola, Finland. Arctic Forge 25 is a U.S. Army multilateral exercise in Finland and Norway, focused on enhancing arctic military capabilities and cooperation with a focus on honing U.S. troops skills to survive, fight, and win in the Arctic’s austere conditions. The Virginia National Guard’s participation strengthens its partnership with the Finnish Defense Force, formalized in May 2024 through the Department of Defense’s State Partnership Program.
