Fort Médoc is a fort built by Vauban, a French military engineer who worked under Louis XIV. He is generally considered the greatest engineer of his time, and one of the most important in Western military history. His principles for fortifications were widely used for nearly 100 years, while aspects of his offensive tactics remained in use until the mid-twentieth century. He viewed civilian infrastructure as closely connected to military effectiveness and worked on many of France's major ports, as well as projects like the Canal de la Bruche, which remain in use today. He founded the Corps royal des ingénieurs militaires, whose curriculum was based on his publications on engineering design, strategy, and training. Fort Médoc was built by Vauban at nearby Cussac-Fort-Médoc, in Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. The earthworks were started in 1689 and construction of the fort itself in 1691. The fort was an element of the "lock" intended to protect Bordeaux from the risk of invasion from the river, having been built on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, complementing Fort Paté, and the Blaye Citadel, which is located on the right hand bank of the Gironde. With the Citadel of Blaye, its city walls and Fort Paté, Fort Médoc was listed in 2008 as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as part of the "Fortifications of Vauban" group. The 17th-century fort is the third component in the Estuary’s defensive system, designed by Vauban, and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The structure is made up of three defensive fortresses, designed to close the navigation channels to potential invaders: the Citadel de Blaye, the Fort Pâté, and Fort Médoc constitute the estuary's famous "Bolt". Since the site was constructed, the Gironde has been largely impenetrable.

The seventeenth century royal engineer Vauban was tasked with the design and construction of this breath-taking defensive triptych, a unique edifice in France.
