Bunad is a Norwegian umbrella term encompassing, in its broadest sense, a range of both traditional rural clothes (mostly dating to the 18th and 19th centuries) as well as modern 20th-century folk costumes. In its narrow sense the word bunad refers only to clothes designed in the early 20th century that are loosely based on traditional costumes. The word bunad in itself is a 20th-century invention.

The bunad movement has its root in 19th-century national romanticism, which included an interest for traditional folk costumes not only in Norway, but also in neighbouring countries such as Denmark and notably Germany. However, in Norway, national romanticist ideas had a more lasting impact, as seen in the use of folk-inspired costumes. wikipedia

The White Cliffs of Dover, part of the North Downs formation, is the name given to the region of English coastline facing the Strait of Dover and France. The cliff face, which reaches a height of 350 feet (110 m), owes its striking appearance to its composition of chalk accented by streaks of black flint. The cliffs, on both sides of the town of Dover in Kent, stretch for eight miles (13 km). A section of coastline encompassing the cliffs was purchased by the National Trust in 2016.

The cliffs are part of the Dover to Kingsdown Cliffs Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation.

This relatively young cinder cone in northern Arizona is about 1000 feet high and erupted between 1600 and 800 B.C. It is part of Strawberry Volcano Wilderness Area which encompasses about 10,000 acres. There are no water sources so bring your own.

The Church of England parish church of St Mary the Virgin, which was begun in the late 12th century, is a Grade I listed building. The north doorway survives from the earliest work, while the rest of the church is largely from the 13th and 14th centuries. Restoration by William Butterfield in 1873–75 included the addition of the south vestry and north porch. The tower has six bells; one is from the 14th century and two from the 16th.

Until the Dissolution, Dinton was a prebend of Shaftesbury Abbey. St Edward's at Teffont Magna was a chapelry of Dinton until 1922. Today the church is part of the Nadder Valley team ministry, which also encompasses Baverstock and Teffont

Nordic Pixel Forest is an all-encompassing video- and sound installation situated in the middle of the Ekeberg forest, above the park’s water pond. It consists of 24.000 LED-lights that make up 3600 eightfolded pixels / LED-points, displayed through artificial shells hung from 400 steel wires that come down from a net mounted in the tree crowns - 7 meters above the ground. Each singular LED-point pojects a part of a video image in constant motion accompanied by music.

Through Nordic Pixel Forest, Pipilotti Rist has created a comprehensive and multi-sensory installation which allows for the viewer to not only see and hear - but also to interact and experience her video on a physical level. Weaving their way through the forest of strands, colours, light and sound, the viewer is inserted into the video itself as it is being displayed. Instead of simply observing, the viewer is allowed to step inside the fragmented pictorial landscape and merge with it.

In the heart of the northern Flinders Ranges, Warraweena encompasses 355 sq km of the highest and most diverse geology and habitat in the area. It is an area of historical, cultural and natural significance.

Several old mine sites, including Sliding Rock, can be found within the boundary of the park. Sliding Rock (Cadnia) was a thriving township in the 1870s and remnants of many of the old buildings can still be seen.

Shepherd's huts, some of which are available for overnight stays, are reminders of the bygone pastoral history of Warraweena.

In 1996, Warraweena ceased being a sheep station and the lease was acquired by Wetlands & Wildlife, a non-profit company, listed on the Commonwealth Register of Environmental Organisations. To this day Warraweena is a private conservation park whose main objective is the recovery and conservation of the unique native flora and fauna of the high country in the Flinders Ranges.

Many of the park's features are remote and accessible only by foot or by four wheel drive tracks suitable for experienced drivers. Many historic sites and attractive picnic and camping sites are easily accessible.

One of my favorite palms in the Palm Conservatory of the Hortus is the Feather Palm also called Licuri Palm from northeastern Brazil. 'Licuri' is etymologically derived from the Tupì word spelled variously as 'ouricuy' 'uricury' etc. Its history is now leading me astray from describing the pretty 'Geranium' in today's photo. 'Geranium peltatum' is what great Linnaeus called it. Of course, it hails from southern Africa. Since then these geraniums have been renamed to 'Pelargonium', hence the English Ivy-Leaved Pelargonium. Its flowers encircle the trunk or stem of that Feather Palm.

Elizabeth Quay inlet.

Elizabeth Quay is a mixed-use development project in the Perth central business district. Encompassing an area located on the north shore of Perth Water near the landmark Swan Bells, the precinct was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II during her Diamond Jubilee.

The project includes construction of an artificial inlet on what was previously the Esplanade Reserve, and modifications to the surrounding environs including Barrack Square, with the project opening nine sites for potential development. Completed facilities were initially projected to include 1,700 residential apartments, 150,000 square metres (1.6 million square feet) of office space and 39,000 square metres (0.42 million square feet) of retail space.

Planning Minister John Day and Premier Colin Barnett turned the first ground at the Esplanade Reserve on 26 April 2012, and Barnett announced the name "Elizabeth Quay" on 28 May 2012. Construction of the inlet and associated infrastructure were completed in January 2016, ahead of the Perth International Arts Festival and Fringe World. The quay was officially opened on 29 January 2016. Construction of the associated buildings will be completed at varying times thereafter, with the first – The Ritz Carlton Hotel and an adjacent residential tower – opened on 15 November 2019.

Description

The Elizabeth Quay precinct is centred around an artificial inlet that opens to the Swan River at its south. At the eastern side of the mouth of the inlet is an islet, which contains the Florence Hummerston Kiosk (which hosts a hospitality complex), the Bessie Rischbieth statue and a playground, and is connected to the eastern shore by a short bridge and to the western shore by the longer Elizabeth Quay Bridge, a pedestrian and cycling bridge which spans the mouth of the inlet.

On the eastern shore are 24 public short stay moorings for recreational boats, as well as the Meet Our Australian Sailor sculpture on the south-eastern shore near the islet. The eastern side contains a 28-storey Ritz Carlton hotel and an adjacent residential tower, as well as two smaller buildings containing food and beverage outlets. The north shore, designated "The Landing", features the sculpture Spanda at its centre, with a carousel immediately west of the public artwork. Directly north of The Landing, across Geoffrey Bolton Avenue which bisects the area from west to east, is the 19-storey Nine The Esplanade office tower development (scheduled for completion in 2025), with the 29-storey Australian headquarters of Chevron Corporation located in the north-east of the precinct. To the north-west, adjacent to the Nine The Esplanade development, is an empty lot yet to be developed as of February 2025; this lot has been slated for the future 56-storey Fifteen The Esplanade mixed-use development.

The western shore features the Elizabeth Quay Jetty for Transperth ferry services to South Perth as well as commercial moorings. To the north-west is a shaded water park and play area and a building containing public toilets and a food and beverage outlet, with the mixed-use EQ West development consisting of two towers (52-storeys and 25-storeys, under construction as of February 2025) taking up the rest of the precinct to its west and south-west. The art piece First Contact stands on the south-west shore, near the western entry to the Elizabeth Quay Bridge.

The Garden sits nestled in the West Hills of Portland, Oregon overlooking the city and providing a tranquil, urban oasis for locals and travelers alike. Designed in 1963, it encompasses 12 acres with eight separate garden styles, and includes an authentic Japanese Tea House, meandering streams, intimate walkways, and a spectacular view of Mt. Hood. This is a place to discard worldly thoughts and concerns and see oneself as a small but integral part of the universe.

Born out of a hope that the experience of peace can contribute to a long lasting peace. Born out of a belief in the power of cultural exchange. Born out of a belief in the excellence of craft, evidence in the Garden itself and the activities that come from it. Born out of a realization that all of these things are made more real and possible if we honor our connection to nature.

Crater Lake NP encompasses the caldera of Crater Lake, a remnant of Mount Mazama, a destroyed volcano, and the surrounding hills and forests. It is the fifth-oldest NP in the USA (1902) & the only NP in Oregon.

Crater Lake has no streams flowing into or out of it. All water that enters the lake is lost by evaporation or subsurface seepage. The lake's water is entirely from direct precipitation in the form of snow and rain; it is known for its changing deep blue hue. At 1,949 feet (594 m) deep at its deepest point, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the US, the second-deepest in North America & the ninth-deepest in the world. Its average depth of 1,148 feet (350 m) makes Crater Lake the deepest in the Western Hemisphere and the third-deepest in the world. The impressive average depth of this volcanic lake is due to the nearly symmetrical 4,000-foot-deep (1,200 m) caldera formed 7,700 years ago during the violent climactic eruptions & subsequent collapse of Mount Mazama.

The caldera rim ranges in elevation from 7,000 to 8,000 feet (2,100 to 2,400 m). The lake surface elevation is 6,178 feet (1,883 m). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crater_Lake_National_Park

The Himalayas contain the third-largest deposit of ice and snow in the world, after Antarctica and the Arctic. The Himalayan range encompasses about 15,000 glaciers, which store about 12,000 km3 (3,000 cubic miles) of fresh water.[16] Its glaciers include the Gangotri and Yamunotri (Uttarakhand) and Khumbu glaciers (Mount Everest region), Langtang glacier (Langtang region) and Zemu (Sikkim).

Owing to the mountains' latitude near the Tropic of Cancer, the permanent snow line is among the highest in the world at typically around 5,500 metres (18,000 ft). In contrast, equatorial mountains in New Guinea, the Rwenzoris and Colombia have a snow line some 900 metres (2,950 ft) lower. The higher regions of the Himalayas are snowbound throughout the year, in spite of their proximity to the tropics, and they form the sources of several large perennial rivers, most of which combine into two large river systems:

The western rivers, of which the Indus is the largest, combine into the Indus Basin.

The Indus begins in Tibet at the confluence of Sengge and Gar rivers and flows southwest through India and then through Pakistan to the Arabian Sea. It is fed by the Jhelum, the Chenab, the Ravi, the Beas, and the Sutlej rivers, among others.

Most of the other Himalayan rivers drain the Ganges-Brahmaputra Basin. Its main rivers are the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Yamuna, as well as other tributaries. The Brahmaputra originates as the Yarlung Tsangpo River in western Tibet, and flows east through Tibet and west through the plains of Assam. The Ganges and the Brahmaputra meet in Bangladesh, and drain into the Bay of Bengal through the world's largest river delta, the Sunderbans.

The Palouse is a distinct geographic region of the northwestern United States, encompassing parts of north central Idaho, southeastern Washington, and, by some definitions, parts of northeast Oregon. Wikipedia.

It is a region characterized by gentle rolling hills covered with wheat fields.

The Empty Quarter area of the UAE. The Rub' al Khali is the largest contiguous sand desert in the world, encompassing most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula. The desert covers some 650,000 square kilometres including parts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. It is part of the larger Arabian Desert.

These areas are narrow sinuous dune ridges that form linear or roughly rectangular patterns around deflation plains and inland sabkha flats. The dunes have a relative relief of about 80m. Dune formations are variable due to multi-directional winds, and include barchanoid, transverse and star shapes. The star dunes are often higher than the surrounding dunes and form impressive and imposing features in the landscape. A white, gray or red surface veneer of fine to coarse sand and fine gravel occurs on the gentle slopes of the dunes adjacent to the sabkhas and deflation plains.

The land is used as low-density grazing. The map unit has sparse vegetation cover with Cyperus conglomeratus and Zygophyllum spp on the lower slopes of the dunes together with Calligonum comosum on the slopes and slip faces. The map unit forms part of the Cyperetum-Zygophylletum vegetation community.

The soils of this map unit are dominated by Typic Torripsamments, mixed, hyperthermic in the high dunes. Other soils are Typic Petrogypsids, sandy, mixed, hyperthermic, Petrogypsic Haplosalids, sandy, mixed, hyperthermic and Gypsic Haplosalids, sandy, mixed, hyperthermic that are confined to the deflation flats.

This view from Mardale Common encompasses barely a sixth of the reservoir's length, but this is certainly the most picturesque part.

Until 1935, the visible area was dry and occupied by Mardale village, upstream of the smaller (4 km long) natural Haweswater; the ruins in the foreground were on the edge of the community, overlooking a church, inn and houses between the forested headland (The Rigg) and what is now the island of Wood Howe.

Then the water level was raised by 29 m behind a dam built by Manchester Corporation, flooding the entire valley floor. With a maximum capacity of 84 billion litres, the reservoir, now over 6 km long, accounts for ~25% of North West England's water supply.

The slope on the left rises to 713 m asl on Branstree, off the edge of the image. The road terminates 1.9 km away at Mardale Head car park, which fills very quickly in season. Seriously: arrive before 08:00 or don't bother until the afternoon, when the 'morning shift' begin to depart.

Harter Fell (778 m) is the largest hill on the left, 3.6 km from here, descending right to Nan Bield Pass before rising again to Mardale Ill Bell (760 m). Beyond The Rigg, Rough Crag curves around Riggindale (home of England's last Golden Eagle until 2016) to meet the horizon 4.2 km away at Racecourse Hill, the 828 m main summit of High Street.

Encompassing grace and power, the familiar Mute Swan can be seen all year round on suitable waterbodies.

The large size and bright white plumage make adult Mute Swans unmistakeable. They can be separated from the wintering swan species by their orange bill (in contrast to the yellow and black bills of Whooper and Bewick's Swans). (BTO).

It encompasses large protected woodlands in the Blean, and the wide open spaces of the Lower Stour Marshes. There are internationally important coastal habitats at Sandwich and Pegwell Bay and near Reculver, and precious chalk downlands in the nationally protected Kent Downs.

The Swiss Riviera stretches from Lausanne to Montreux and encompasses the beautiful Lavaux vineyards perched on steep hills with a dramatic view of the lake and the Alps on the other side.

Lausanne is situated on the shores of Lake Geneva, 62 kilometres (38.5 miles) northeast of Geneva. It is a city in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, and the capital and biggest city of the canton of Vaud. It is the second-largest city on Lake Geneva and the fourth largest city in Switzerland.

Lausanne lies in a noted wine-growing region. It combines a dynamic commercial town with the locality of a holiday resort.
