Encompassing more than 69,000 acres, the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, Illinois, is the largest forest preserve district in the United States, providing many opportunities for Chicago area residents to escape from the urban grind. But in places where bike paths and hiking trails abut busy highways, it’s a good idea to stay alert, lest one of those vehicles whizzing past should suddenly veer out of control. For a look at what can happen, check out the shot in the first comment, taken a couple of years ago at almost the same spot as the image above.

Hepatic Tanager is the most widely distributed Piranga tanager, ranging from the southwest United States south to northern Argentina. Its English name is based on the liver-red color of the adult male from the northern part of the species' range; however, its scientific name, flava, meaning "yellow," derives from the original description, which is based on a female from Paraguay. These names reflect both a characteristic of the genus Piranga, marked sexual dichromatism, and the broad range of coloration, habitat, and behavior encompassed within the Hepatic Tanager as currently recognized.
Even though the Hepatic Tanager is currently considered one species, much evidence, including a recent study of molecular genetics, indicates that up to 3 species could be recognized, corresponding to the 3 groups of subspecies combined long ago. These groups and their respective species names are the Hepatic Tanager (P. hepatica) of montane pine-oak forests from the southwestern United States to Nicaragua, the Tooth-billed Tanager (P. lutea) of forest edges in foothills and mountains from Costa Rica to northern and western South America, and the Red Tanager (P. flava) of open woodlands of eastern and southeastern South America.

Nothing says "summer" to me quite like the all-encompassing racket of cicadas. This year, their symphony has hit such an epic crescendo that we've had to keep the doors shut—otherwise, we can’t hear ourselves think or talk. (On second thought, maybe that’s a feature, not a bug!)
Cicadas hold the dubious honor of being the loudest insects on Earth. Some species can belt out a 120-decibel tune—louder than a rock concert and painful to human ears. The deafening din is believed to deter hungry birds, and when cicadas sing in a group, it’s harder for predators to zero in on any one unlucky performer. I’m convinced that at least half the Australian cicada population has formed a choir in the trees behind our house.
This guy here was sharing the pool with me today, having a refreshing swim, which he unfortunately never learned to do. Lucky for him I have my cicada lifesaving credentials!
Fun Fact
Cicadas aren’t just an Aussie phenomenon — these noisy critters are found worldwide, especially in tropical regions. This year, cicada fans (yes, they exist) are buzzing about an event 1,547 years in the making! For the first time in over two centuries, two U.S. broods—the 13-year and 17-year cicadas—have emerged together. Meanwhile, down under, our beloved greengrocer cicadas, with their 7-year life cycle, are joining the party. A global jam session!
With over 200 known species in Australia and as many as 800 still waiting for scientific recognition, their singing is well known all over the country.
Trying to wrap my head around the maths and timing of these cycles is more headache-inducing than the cicada choir itself.
This is a focus bracket and stack of 10 photos taken with my 60mm macro lens.
Have a great week everyone!

The Flinders Ranges National Park encompasses some of the most spectacular scenery in South Australia, made famous by the paintings of Sir Hans Heysen.
The scenic center of the Flinders Ranges is Wilpena Pound, an 80-square-km bowl ringed by hills that curve gently upward, only to fall away from the rims of sheer cliffs.
Tucked into the mountains of California, Yosemite National Park is renowned for its granite cliffs and waterfalls. Half Dome and El Capitan are two of the formations made famous by photographer Ansel Adams. The park, which encompasses 1,189 square miles (3,080 square km), was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984.
Encompass, by local sculptor Michael Speller, was inspired by the support given to beneficiaries by the Greenwich Hospital. The interwoven figures, conjure up sailors climbing the rigging of a tall ship, culminate in a domed roof that reference the famous twin domes of Sir Christopher Wren's Royal Naval College.
The piece incorporates "found objects' from the Thames, tools and objects used by craft workers in the market, films set on location in the area here and words, donated by local school children, that are associated with Greenwich. Both objects and text have been impressed upon the figures thereby giving some degree of uniformity to the sculpture.
Had a hunt around for a wheat field being harvested this lunchtime but it was all quiet! I spotted this lone tree in a wheat crop field near Colton so took the opportunity to have a fly over to see what I could make of it, this in fact. Got another top down shot which looks rather cool too, will post later.
I composed this image of a portion of Alberta's Ghost River Wilderness Preserve while traveling Alberta's historic Forestry Trunk Road. This protected area encompasses the headwaters of the Ghost River spanning 153.2 square kilometers.
The wilderness area is defined by rugged peaks, valleys that have been carved out by glaciers, alpine and subalpine meadows, along with mountainous lakes throughout.
The wilderness area was established back in 1967 and is one of only three wilderness areas within Alberta, Canada. Being a wilderness area means that no travel is permitting within the region, except by foot. The Ghost River Wilderness Area borders Banff National Park as it stretches across the Rocky Mountains.
Due to the area being highly protected, there are many species of butterflies that are able to flourish. The area is also home to Bighorn sheep, moose, bear, deer, timberwolves, and even wild horses. The region is also well-known for its world-class ice climbing. Due to the protected nature of the region, there are minimal defined trails.
Grand Teton National Park is in the northwest of the U.S state of Wyoming. It encompasses the Teton mountain range, the 4,000-meter Grand Teton peak, and the valley known as Jackson Hole. It’s a popular destination in summer for mountaineering, hiking, backcountry camping and fishing, linked to nearby Yellowstone National Park.

I could lose myself under your skin
And dig up all the colors that you've held within
I'm all encompassed by you, your amber waves
I could spill myself under your drift
And show you all the demons that I've brought through the rift
I'm all encompassed by you, your amber waves
I swear it out loud
That I live to wade in your dark black cloud
I live in a drought
Of your heart and your soul to drown my doubt
All the patience in you and all the colors in your hair
Your glare consumes me
The past is beneath you, like a sunken ship
Your love consumes me
Your amber waves
The rain, it calms you gently, I listen so intently
Your surface soothed after the sun
I'm so elated by you, sedated by your voice
You cleanse and renew
I could lose myself under your skin
And dig up all the colors that I've held within
I'm all encompassed by you
It's in your eyes
It's in your eyes
Your somber beauty
Your imperfect perfections
Your surface glitters with violent reflections
It's in your eyes
Your love consumes me
All the patience in you and all the colors in your hair
Your glare consumes me
The past is beneath you, like a sunken ship
Your love consumes me
Your amber waves
The Moroccan Sahara encompasses a large portion of southern Morocco and has an area of about 252,000 square miles (652,000 square kilometers). With vast swaths of sand dunes, rugged mountains, rocky plateaus, and lush oasis valleys, the desert landscape is breathtaking.
The region was blessed with rare heavy rain on the day before our visit.
How fortunate we arrived a day later with fine weather, got to ride on the camel and watched the sunset on top of a sand dune.
This photo was taken from high up of a very friendly and calm camel.

Cobblestones, baroque wooden doors and now and then a carriage drive through the house entrance: Citadelstrasse is probably the area that best reflects the historical flair of the residential city of Düsseldorf. It runs from Bäckergasse to Schulstrasse, parallel to the banks of the Rhine and seems to have been untouched for several centuries. Modernity has found its way here in the form of numerous galleries. The building that gives the street its name - the citadel - is not difficult to guess.
The citadel was located north of today's Citadelstrasse. Remains of the wall can still be seen at the small harbor in the old town.
In 1552, Duke Wilhelm "the Rich" had a citadel built, which originally gave its name to the entire district it encompassed. The street was later named after the Antoniuskirche, today's parish church of St. Maximilian. In 1720 it was finally given the name Citadelstrasse.
This picture encompasses a vivid memory of an amazing hike along Lanzarote's wild northern cliffs at sunset. Although most people go for the volcanoes in the southern part of the island, I was drawn to the volcanic cliffs and the archipelago as it is a kind of scenery I hadn't seen anywhere else before.

What must I do to make you understand
You mean everything to me
Don't have the strength to say
Give this heart of mine a chance
And maybe then you will see...
I'll do anything, do anything that you tell me
I'll be there, I'll be there if you need me.
Reachin' out to you
Do you feel it too
Lovin' you is all I wanna do
I'm completely sure
I've never felt this way before
When I smile you know that there is something more.
What must I do so I can make you see
The light that shines in my eyes
You brighten up my day
You even help me find my way
I wish you're always by my side
And I can't stop, don't know how to stop thinkin' of you
And I'll do anything, do anything to be near you...
Reachin' out to you
Do you feel it too
Lovin' you is all I wanna do
I'm completely sure
I've never felt this way before
Deep inside you know that there is something more.

The Waux-Hall in Spa is an entertainment venue, encompassing a ballroom, concert hall, and bar, inaugurated in 1770. Located outside the town center at the intersection of the main roads leading to the fountains, the Waux-Hall is one of the oldest gambling halls in Europe. A vast building with harmonious proportions, it is the work of the Liège architect Jacques-Barthélemy Renoz. The building, listed as a monument since July 24, 1936, has been included on the Walloon Government's list of exceptional heritage since 1993. The first phase of restoration work focused on the exterior of the Waux-Hall: the facades and perimeter walls, with the roofs having been repaired in 1987-1988. Construction began in March 2006 and was completed at the end of 2009. The planning permit for the second phase (restoration and interior design, landscaping) was obtained on April 14, 2022. The intended use is that of a business club. The ground floor is expected to house the club's regular activities as well as a restaurant, while the upper floor would be used for prestigious events (concerts, receptions, conferences, etc.).

Bunad is a Norwegian umbrella term encompassing, in its broadest sense, a range of both traditional rural clothes (mostly dating to the 18th and 19th centuries) as well as modern 20th-century folk costumes. In its narrow sense the word bunad refers only to clothes designed in the early 20th century that are loosely based on traditional costumes. The word bunad in itself is a 20th-century invention.
The bunad movement has its root in 19th-century national romanticism, which included an interest for traditional folk costumes not only in Norway, but also in neighbouring countries such as Denmark and notably Germany. However, in Norway, national romanticist ideas had a more lasting impact, as seen in the use of folk-inspired costumes. wikipedia

Elizabeth Quay inlet with the Perth CBD in the background.
Elizabeth Quay is a mixed-use development project in the Perth central business district. Encompassing an area located on the north shore of Perth Water near the landmark Swan Bells, the precinct was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II during her Diamond Jubilee.
The project includes construction of an artificial inlet on what was previously the Esplanade Reserve, and modifications to the surrounding environs including Barrack Square, with the project opening nine sites for potential development. Completed facilities were initially projected to include 1,700 residential apartments, 150,000 square metres (1.6 million square feet) of office space and 39,000 square metres (0.42 million square feet) of retail space.
Planning Minister John Day and Premier Colin Barnett turned the first ground at the Esplanade Reserve on 26 April 2012, and Barnett announced the name "Elizabeth Quay" on 28 May 2012. Construction of the inlet and associated infrastructure were completed in January 2016, ahead of the Perth International Arts Festival and Fringe World. The quay was officially opened on 29 January 2016. Construction of the associated buildings will be completed at varying times thereafter, with the first – The Ritz Carlton Hotel and an adjacent residential tower – opened on 15 November 2019.
Description
The Elizabeth Quay precinct is centred around an artificial inlet that opens to the Swan River at its south. At the eastern side of the mouth of the inlet is an islet, which contains the Florence Hummerston Kiosk (which hosts a hospitality complex), the Bessie Rischbieth statue and a playground, and is connected to the eastern shore by a short bridge and to the western shore by the longer Elizabeth Quay Bridge, a pedestrian and cycling bridge which spans the mouth of the inlet.
On the eastern shore are 24 public short stay moorings for recreational boats, as well as the Meet Our Australian Sailor sculpture on the south-eastern shore near the islet. The eastern side contains a 28-storey Ritz Carlton hotel and an adjacent residential tower, as well as two smaller buildings containing food and beverage outlets. The north shore, designated "The Landing", features the sculpture Spanda at its centre, with a carousel immediately west of the public artwork. Directly north of The Landing, across Geoffrey Bolton Avenue which bisects the area from west to east, is the 19-storey Nine The Esplanade office tower development (scheduled for completion in 2025), with the 29-storey Australian headquarters of Chevron Corporation located in the north-east of the precinct. To the north-west, adjacent to the Nine The Esplanade development, is an empty lot yet to be developed as of February 2025; this lot has been slated for the future 56-storey Fifteen The Esplanade mixed-use development.
The western shore features the Elizabeth Quay Jetty for Transperth ferry services to South Perth as well as commercial moorings. To the north-west is a shaded water park and play area and a building containing public toilets and a food and beverage outlet, with the mixed-use EQ West development consisting of two towers (52-storeys and 25-storeys, under construction as of February 2025) taking up the rest of the precinct to its west and south-west. The art piece First Contact stands on the south-west shore, near the western entry to the Elizabeth Quay Bridge.

The Quarry is the main recreational park in Shrewsbury, the county town of Shropshire, England. The park was created in 1719 and encompasses 29 acres. It is listed Grade II in Historic England's Register of Parks and Gardens. With a location within easy walking distance of Shrewsbury town centre, Shrewsbury Sixth Form College and Shrewsbury School, it is the most heavily used public park within the county.
The Dingle is centrepiece to the park is The Dingle, a former stone quarry, but now a landscaped sunken garden. Between 1324 and 1588 it was known as the Wet or Water Quarry because it was liable to flood. It was quarried for both stone and clay. The project to clear out the Dingle and then plant it was funded by the Shropshire Horticultural Society, with the ornamental gardens opened in 1879, featuring many flower beds and borders, with ponds and fountains. Although there are still formal planted beds, in recent years the planting scheme has become more naturalistic in style, reflecting modern tastes.

Nassau Street borders on the Fulton-Nassau Historic District, which encompasses several buildings along Nassau between Spruce and Liberty Streets. The original headquarters of The New York Times, then the New-York Daily Times, was located at 113 Nassau Street. In 1854, the paper moved to 138 Nassau Street, and in 1858 it moved to 41 Park Row, making it the first newspaper in New York City to have entire building solely for its own work force.[1]
In 1931, the BMT Nassau Street Line (present J and Z trains) of the New York City Subway was extended under Nassau Street, with stops at Fulton Street and Broad Street.[2] Nassau Street is only 34 feet (10 m) wide, and the subway floor was only 20 feet (6.1 m) below building foundations. As a result, 89 buildings had to be underpinned to ensure that they would stay on their foundation
