The 1910 Harris County Courthouse is a six story structure of neo-classical design topped by a prominent clerestory drum and dome. It occupies an entire city block, called Courthouse Square, in the oldest section of downtown Houston near Allen's Landing. This square has served as the site of the seat of government in Harris County since 1837. It is the fifth courthouse to stand in Courthouse Square on a site set aside for that purpose by the Allen brothers, founders of Houston. The site and the building have figured prominently in the history of Houston and Harris County. When Augusts C. Allen and John K. Allen laid out Houston, the charter they secured specified that "the town was to encompass nine square miles with the courthouse in the center." The Allens donated the courthouse site with the stipulation that ownership would revert to their heirs were it ever used for any other purpose.
Yukon is a territory in northwest Canada that encompasses 186,272 square miles (482,443 km2) yet holds a population of only roughly 37,000 with over 85% of those people living in the capital city of Whitehorse. Historically known for its mining, it was placed firmly on the map during the Klondike Gold Rush between 1896 and 1899 when an influx of 100,000 gold prospectors flooded the area. Of those 100,000 only 30,000 made it to the mines, 4,000 found gold, and a handful got rich. With the news of gold in Nome in western Alaska a few years later, most prospectors quickly moved on. Today mining still takes place, but tourism of its pristine lands and the history of the gold rush era is its second biggest industry.
This shot of the wildflowers on a rainy/cloudy day was taken during a random stop on a day filled with scenic views and black bear sightings. The whole region is just full of beautiful mountains, lakes, rivers, and wildlife. While exploring this vast untouched wilderness I began to imagine what it would’ve felt like for Lewis and Clark during their expedition out into the unknown west in 1804. As much as I love cities, sometimes it’s nice to get far away from civilization and just truly enjoy the wild outdoors.
Fish Lake is located on the western slope of Steens Mountain. Steens Mountain encompasses an extraordinary landscape with deep glacier carved-gorges, stunning scenery, wilderness, wild rivers, a rich diversity of plant and animal species, and a way of life for all who live there. Fish Lake is at 7400-foot elevation and set among aspen stands and shore willows.
Steens Mountain is located in Oregon's high desert and is one of the crown jewels of the state's wildlands. It is some of the wildest and most remote land left in Oregon.
Steens Mountain is in the southeastern part of the state, and is a large fault-block mountain. It is sometimes confused with a mountain range but is properly a single mountain.

Piranga flava, now Piranga lutea
(Tooth-billed Tanager / Cardenal Montañero)
Hepatic Tanager is the most widely distributed Piranga tanager, ranging from the southwest United States south to northern Argentina. Its English name is based on the liver-red color of the adult male from the northern part of the species' range; however, its scientific name, flava, meaning "yellow," derives from the original description, which is based on a female from Paraguay. These names reflect both a characteristic of the genus Piranga, marked sexual dichromatism, and the broad range of coloration, habitat, and behavior encompassed within the Hepatic Tanager as currently recognized.
Even though the Hepatic Tanager is currently considered one species, much evidence, including a recent study of molecular genetics, indicates that up to 3 species could be recognized, corresponding to the 3 groups of subspecies combined long ago. These groups and their respective species names are the Hepatic Tanager (P. hepatica) of montane pine-oak forests from the southwestern United States to Nicaragua, the Tooth-billed Tanager (P. lutea) of forest edges in foothills and mountains from Costa Rica to northern and western South America, and the Red Tanager (P. flava) of open woodlands of eastern and southeastern South America.

I always strongly believed that choosing to surround yourself with light and positivity is how you live a happy life. This for me applies to the people I decide to bond with and once it's done I choose to keep close. Those two have been the best thing that happened to me in 2020 and since then they are responsible for the majority of my daily smiles and my general happiness. Strong shoulders to lean on, sensitive ears to confide in, mouths full of laughter and wisdom. True friends that make my heart beat faster by just sharing moments with them even though they love to bully me about goat cheese...
Oceane, Adam, thank you both for being present for me and shining such light every single day into that world of mine. I can't be thankful enough for your two.

Pull and tug as you might,

The City of Rocks State Park encompasses a one square mile area in the scenic Chihuahuan desert region of southwestern New Mexico at an elevation of 5,200 feet. The “city” is a geologic formation made up of large, sculptured rock columns, or pinnacles, rising as high as 40 feet and separated by paths or lanes resembling city streets. These rocks were formed about 35 million years ago when a very large volcano erupted. Erosion over millions of years slowly formed the sculptured columns seen today.
Most of the rock formations are in the valley below, but there are a few up on a hill.

"PHOENIX, ARIZONA.- The Heard Museum presents today “John Hoover: Art and Life,” on view through June 15, 2003. One of the foremost Native sculptors, John Hoover eloquently depicts his Aleut heritage in his graceful forms. Nearly 75 works -- carved panels, free-standing bronzes and early paintings -- are featured in this traveling exhibition organized by the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. Featuring nearly 75 pieces by the prominent Alaskan artist John Hoover, Art and Life includes large and small carved panels, free standing bronzes, and some of Hoover’s earliest paintings. Hoover’s work as an Alaskan Native artist is unique because although he lived his early years in Cordova, Alaska, his work encompasses the many styles of other Native regions, both throughout Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. His Aleut heritage is eloquently portrayed in the sinuous sea forms and birds that inhabit much of his artwork. The cedar Hoover uses in his carvings is 1700 to 2000 years old and comes from the forests of western Washington. Cedar flourishes along the rainforest coast of the Pacific Northwest with other conifers. Marine-oriented peoples of the Northwest Coast who lived in or near the great evergreen forests have held the supernatural cedar in the highest esteem. They believe the cedar gave itself to them to help sustain them. They used the wood of the cedar trees to build houses and boats, while the bark was used to weave baskets, mats, clothing, curtains and spiritual objects. The range of subject matter found in Hoover’s sculptures is seemingly endless, but some recurring characters such as birds, mammals, shamans, human figures, Salmon Woman and Volcano Woman can be seen to play key roles. He is fond of certain animals and supernatural beings, and they are central to his imagery. John Hoover: Art and Life is a traveling exhibition organized by the Anchorage Museum of History and Art"
Today's modern boho fashion encompasses trends from the beatnik and hippie eras which was during a time when the cultural aesthetic was similar to the bohemians. Today, modern boho reflects and celebrates the counterculture psyche of those earlier times.
Based on a free-spirited, footloose lifestyle, this LUXE Paris FREE SPIRIT Dress captures the romantic and flowy essence of the vintage Bohemian ethos.
This LUXE Paris Free Spirit Dress is a more curated boho look. The dress of course is more closely fitted, its look more coordinated, and it uses more neutral gray and white colors for its base than that of classic boho. However, its chic style remains very self-expressive.
This LUXE Paris Free Spirit Dress fits Belleza Venus, Slink Belleza Isis/Freya, Slink Hourglass/Physique, Maitreya, and Legacy mesh bodies.
The colors within its boho print top and complementing hem are rich and mixed with hippy-like patterning. No boho outfit is complete without accessories like this Magnetic Felt Fedora gray hat, the layered necklaces, rings, and Boho Chic nails from Luna Body Art. To complement and pull out the cranberry-colored accents in the blouse, I chose one of the colors from CHSkins Lipstick no. 3.
The LUXE Paris Free Spirit Dress, the Magnetic Felt Fedora Hat, the CHSkins LipStick, and the Luna Boho Chic nails are all available at this month’s SWANK Boho Chic Event.

Petrified Forest National Park is a national park of the United States in Navajo and Apache counties in northeastern Arizona. Named for its large deposits of petrified wood, the park covers about 346 square miles (900 square kilometers), encompassing semi-desert shrub steppe as well as highly eroded and colorful badlands. The park's headquarters is about 26 miles (42 km) east of Holbrook along Interstate 40 (I-40), which parallels the BNSF Railway's Southern Transcon, the Puerco River, and historic U.S. Route 66, all crossing the park roughly east–west. The site, the northern part of which extends into the Painted Desert, was declared a national monument in 1906 and a national park in 1962. The park received 644,922 recreational visitors in 2018.
The Petrified Forest is known for its fossils, especially fallen trees that lived in the Late Triassic Epoch, about 225 million years ago. The sediments containing the fossil logs are part of the widespread and colorful Chinle Formation, from which the Painted Desert gets its name. Beginning about 60 million years ago, the Colorado Plateau, of which the park is part, was pushed upward by tectonic forces and exposed to increased erosion. All of the park's rock layers above the Chinle, except geologically recent ones found in parts of the park, have been removed by wind and water. In addition to petrified logs, fossils found in the park have included Late Triassic ferns, cycads, ginkgoes, and many other plants as well as fauna including giant reptiles called phytosaurs, large amphibians, and early dinosaurs. Paleontologists have been unearthing and studying the park's fossils since the early 20th century.
The park's earliest human inhabitants arrived 13,000 years ago.[8] These Clovis-era people are the ancestors of Native Americans.[9][10] By about 2,500 years ago Ancestral Pueblo farmers were growing corn and living in subterranean pit houses in what would become the park.[11] By one-thousand years ago Ancestral Pueblo farmers lived in above-ground, masonry dwellings called pueblos and gathered in large communal buildings called great kivas.[12] By 1450 CE Ancestral Pueblo farmers in the Petrified Forest migrated to join rapidly growing communities on the Hopi Mesas to the northwest and the Pueblo of Zuni to the east–these locations are still home to thousands of descendant community members today.[13] More than 1,000 archeological sites, including petroglyphs, have been discovered in the park. These ancestral places remain important to descendant communities. In the 16th century, Spanish explorers visited the area, and by the mid-19th century a U.S. team had surveyed an east–west route through the area where the park is now located and noted the petrified wood.[14] Later, roads and a railway followed similar routes and gave rise to tourism and, before the park was protected, to large-scale removal of fossils. Theft of petrified wood remains a problem in the 21st century.

This is from the epic experience over Spring 2019 watching a pair of White-tailed Kites make their home and raise their family. This particular branch we (I say we - the kites' stardom grew to encompass many SoCal nature photographers) dubbed the "dining platform" as the adults used it often to eat their prey. Sometimes they exchanged the whole or partially eaten meal on this branch - true love.

Blue Mountains National Park is located on the southeastern side of Australia about 50 miles (80 km) west of Sydney. The national park is part of the larger Greater Blue Mountains Area which has been established as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park boundaries encompass an area of 1,034.6 square miles (2,679.5 sq km).
The highest elevation is only 3,986 feet (1,215 m) which makes the name of the park seem a little off. The park is comprised of a plateau that has been carved by large rivers cross the region. Mount Werong represents this highest summit with the four largest rivers including Coxs, Grose, Wollangambe, and Wollondilly.
The plateau that accounts for most of the park slopes down from the 3,600 feet (1,100 m) to 660 feet (200 m). The sloping plateau and rivers have created a variety of habitats such as grasslands, swamps, and wetlands with 114 endemic species of plants. Kangaroos are easily seen in the park.
Because of the proximity to Sydney, the Blue Mountains National Park is the most visited park in New South Wales.
The formation shown here, known as the Three Sisters, is one of the most prominent features in the park. (national-parks.org)

Today begins a new series on Jo Daviess County. Located in the northwest corner of Illinois, Jo Daviess County is known for its scenic stretches of road and valley views, and for Galena, its picturesque county seat.
In the northeastern corner of Jo Daviess County, just below the Illinois and Wisconsin state line, is the Village of Warren, population 1,304 according to a 2019 estimate. This photo shows of the Warren Commercial Historic District along east and west Main Street. The district, which is concentrated along both sides of the railroad tracks on Main and Railroad Streets, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995, and encompasses the town's central business district including 34 contributing buildings.
Development in the district began in 1852, the year that the Illinois Central Railroad came to Warren, and continued into the twentieth century. Most of the buildings in the historic district are vernacular brick commercial structures with pressed metal or brick ornamentation, though examples of Victorian or Classical Revival architecture can also be seen.
Warren is the location of the Jo Daviess County Fair. Held annually in August, it is the oldest county fair in the state of Illinois.
Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge encompasses over 23,000 acres in eastern Washington on the edge of the Columbia River Basin. The Channeled Scablands ecosystem that predominates the Refuge is unique within the National Wildlife Refuge System. Ponderosa pine, wetlands, meadow steppe and riparian habitat dominate the landscape.
The dry summer’s impact to the wetlands and lakes is apparent as is the resulting low number of birds. This dried out wetland dead tree caught my eye for its textures and moss - and also because I hope to see song birds nesting in its nooks and crannies next spring!

The Painted Desert area is a broad region of rocky badlands encompassing more than 93,500 acres, this vast landscape features rocks in every hue – from deep lavenders and rich grays to reds, oranges and even pinks.
Located in Northern Arizona, the Painted Desert stretches from Grand Canyon National Park eastward to Petrified Forest National Park, with a large portion lying within the Navajo Nation.
A natural canvas millions of years in the making, no one event shaped the Painted Desert. Instead, the area – which is home to many memorable formations and features – serves as proof of the earth’s volatility: volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods and sunlight all combined to create the Painted Desert. Deposits of clay and sandstone, stacked in elegant layers, play with the setting Arizona sun in an altering display of colorful radiance.
Both the Navajo and Hopi people have lived in the region for hundreds of years, but it was Spanish Colonialists who gave this landscape the name we know it by today – El Desierto Pintado.
Thank you for your comments.

explored - The basilica of Santo Stefano encompasses a complex of religious edifices in the city of Bologna, Italy. Located in the eponymous square, it is locally known as Sette Chiese.
According to tradition Saint Petronius, a bishop of the city during the 5th century, built the basilica over a temple of the goddess Isis. The saint wished to have a building that recalled the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
