Pillowy and light homemade gnocchi tossed with tender asparagus and a savory, crispy, emulsified pancetta flavored pan sauce, this Tuscan Gnocchi’s appeal lies in its simplicity.

Cyanotype composed of idly disassembled negatives, digitally produced, which were promptly ignored for a period of time while paper was being prepared. In this case, no gelatin, gesso or ill-will was involved, only the rough trade of emulsification from the business end of an old acrylic painting brush.

Subsequently exposed to the empowering rays of Sol for ten minutes, an image was produced under the mechanism of water and vinegar, followed by ammonia and tannin contamination and finalized with flash-oxidation in hydrogen peroxide.

The paper used is of the rather shabby sort, of unknown manufacture and origin, but which enjoys nonetheless a charming character to which I've become endeared.

The pumphouse had been previously flooded- some surprise, given its location. Having mixed with oil from the site, the floodwaters then receded leaving a thick, emulsified sheen on everything in the room.

Art History 1-20-2018

by John R. Williams {song lyrics by Jan and Dean)

The painter proclaimed

I shall carry easel and paints

into the tall winter grasses

facing the willow grove and snowy ridge.

I shall paint with the child’s first seeing

before reflection and decision

bedazzled

with a love lost in itself

abandoned, playful

brushes loaded with pretty colors

unruly grasses yellows and greens

this way and that with flair

reddish, orangish see-through trees

with wild black limbs.

Squeeze out all the blues, browns,

greens, whites and sing, sing, sing.

Let the hands and fingers take over.

There is no life, no beauty without joy

and fun, fun, fun

‘till your daddy takes the T-Bird away.

And so he did just that

and it was good

but dangerously heretical.

The Academy of Such and Such and So and So

were aghast at such insensitivity.

He was tried, demonetized

and sent to the tower.

In his cell, high above,

there was one slit for a window.

Dark, dank stone walls,

a plain brown blanket

and the prerequisite bucket in the corner.

He lay down on his straw mattress,

closed his eyes and low and behold

there on the screen behind the eyelids

were sparkling, blinking, twinkling

gems, jewels, stars, planets, pixels

and roiling, billowing clouds

emulsified into vibrant hues.

Every time a thought, sad, glad

or mathematical, arose

it was carried off in the clouds.

Awaking, he sat up and looked at the wall

it was liquid and undulant

morphing into subtle earth tones.

Through the slit a shaft of light

divided the cell into right angles,

soooo Pythagorean.

In the bright beam swirled

a Milky Way hologram.

The painter heard the musica universalis

and began to sing:

“Well, she got her daddy's car

And she's cruisin' through the hamburger stand now

Seems she forgot all about the library like she told her old man now

And with the radio blastin' goes cruisin' just as fast as she can now

And she'll have fun fun fun 'til her daddy takes the T-Bird away

Fun fun fun 'til her daddy takes the T-Bird away.”

Although the panel shape and palette of this painting and another mummy portrait in the Met’s collection (09.181.2) are very similar, differences in the hair and beards suggest that the portrait of the man with the mole (09.181.2) is about a generation earlier than the portrait here. This man's body is turned more directly toward the viewer. He has bushy black hair, large round eyes, tawny skin, and a thick beard that emphasizes his emaciated cheeks. The use of light and shadow on various parts of the face and neck is very skilled.

The term encaustic designates painting in which beeswax is mixed with pigments. The technique was first used by Greek painters of the fifth and fourth centuries B.C. Ancient descriptions are difficult to interpret, and Egyptian mummy portraits--the only works in the medium surviving from antiquity--have not yet been analyzed extensively. Therefore, many questions concerning the details of the techniques used by mummy-portrait painters remain open, although the work of a few scholars and modern artists who paint in encaustic has provided some insight.

The first step in producing a mummy portrait was to sketch the outlines of face and garment on a wood panel that had been prepared with distemper, transparent glue, or dark wax. Then, a mixture of beeswax with powdered pigments was prepared. The wax could be used hot or cold. When used in molten state, the wax was either pure or supplemented with resin, glue, egg, gum, or oil. The molten beeswax/ pigment mixture was laid on quickly with long even brushstrokes, employing a thinner mixture for the background and garments and thick creamy paste-like

paints for the facial features. When the wax cooled, a hard tool was used to blend the various flesh tones of face and neck.

When used cold, the wax had to be made suitable for painting by a process called emulsification, in which alkalis were added that allowed the wax to be suspended in egg or oil. The ancient writers appear to refer to this as "Punic wax." Emulsified wax paints are said to dry more slowly than molten wax paints, giving the painter greater control, and time to correct and adjust during the painting process. Mummy portraits that show only brushstrokes, no hard tool marks, are thought to have been created with emulsified cold wax. Many modern artists who paint in encaustic actually employ a heated tool to fuse paints, hence the term encaustic, which means "burnt in." Ancient painters probably did not use such a technique.

When it was announced that Chocolate was good for you that meant Chocolate "not candy bars!" It's not the chocolate but what's put in the bar that makes them unhealthy. The ingredients in one of my bars in the photo above is: Unsweetened Cacao; Erythritol; Cocoa Butter, Inulin; Stevia and Vanilla Extract. That's it! Oh and the Inulin is a good thing, it helps the good bacteria in our body.

Now here's what's in a random candy bar: Milk**, sugar, cocoa butter, cocoa mass, vegetable fats (palm, Shea), emulsifiers (E442, E476), flavorings. May contain nuts, wheat. So if you have food allergies be careful with these conventional candy bars.

after 2 years waiting :). I made them more than 4 times and always failed. They are our signature and humble cake "bolu kukus". Made of flour , eggs , sugar, emulsifier , vanilla powder and water. . Bolu kukus or Indonesian style steamed cake has spongy texture and simple on taste. It reminds me our late grandparents and hometown.

I or many friends are curious on making them, they looks simple and easy but the fact is many of them failed ( including me :D ) Today day was my lucky day and I hope it will be always :).

Each month I post a recipe column in the Emerald City Newsletter called "Maille's Kitchen". One of my dearest friends here on Flickr asked why I don't post it on here as well. So, here goes. This sauce will make you an instant rock star in the kitchen whether used on baked chicken breasts, braised boneless pork chops, halibut, cod, sole, and especially on grilled salmon. Brush it on grilled corn on the cob and you'll be amazed!

Garlic Lime Butter Sauce

1 large garlic clove - rough chop

1/4 C. fresh lime juice (2-3 limes)

1 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. black pepper

1 stick melted butter (unsalted)

Puree garlic, lime juice, salt & pepper in a food processor or blender until smooth.

With the motor running, drizzle in the melted butter until emulsified & creamy.

Can be used immediately or stored in the fridge (covered) for up to a week.

Stir well before using.

Bon Appetite! -Maille

We had an absolutely gorgeous weekend, which has actually extended to Monday for me! The university where I work is closed today. (Yay!)

This morning, I took two of the pugs for a five mile walk and made this awesome Thai inspired beef and noodle salad for lunch. I always crave lots of vegetables and cold/crisp foods for lunch when the weather turns warm, so this was perfect. I've seen lots of similar recipes for salads like this, so I combined a lot of what I've seen to create my own version.

Recipe

Step One: Marinate about a pound of sirloin steak in a mix of soy sauce, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, honey and oil. (A bottled Asian-style marinade would work just as well) Let the meat marinade for a full 24 hours. Grill the steak while you work on chopping the vegetables. Once it is cooked to medium (or however you like it), set it aside to cool. Once cool, slice it into thin strips.

Step Two: Combine vegetables in a big bowl - 4 stalks celery (sliced), 2 red bell peppers (cut into thin strips), 1 head broccoli (broken into small florets) and about 8 ounces of sugar snap peas. I suppose you can use frozen broccoli and sugar snap peas, but they won't be as crisp or colorful as the fresh ones.

Step Three: Cook 12 ounces of spaghetti (I used whole grain blend). In the last minute of cooking add all the vegetables to the pot. This will bring out the color, but leave the vegetables nice and crisp. Drain the pasta and vegetables and rinse with very cold water until everything is completely cooled off. Let the pasta and vegetables drain thoroughly.

Step Four: Make the dressing. In a blender mix 1/2 c. soy sauce, 1/2 c. rice vinegar, 1/2 t. cayenne pepper, 1 T. honey, 1/4 cup canola oil, 3 T. orange juice, 3-4 minced garlic cloves, several teaspoons of fresh grated ginger and 1 T. peanut butter. Give everything a good whirl until the oil and vinegar are emulsified. (If you like things more or less spicy, go ahead and adjust the cayenne pepper)

Step Five: Mix the pasta, vegetables, steak and dressing in a large bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

This recipe makes a ton of salad.

I have what might be called a restaurant crush on Olympic Provisions. Except that it's not just their restaurant, which I've only been to three times in the past two years. It's their farmers market stand, and their amazing salumi and chorizo, and their emulsified sausages and bacon. The restaurant is the place where it all comes together, though, and you can get a frosty cold expertly mixed cocktail and a variety of fresh, innovative vegetable based dishes, along with the aforementioned (and highly touted) (and brightly emblazoned) MEAT.

Speaking of crushes, though, what a pack are these three? The fellow on the right is Tyler, one of the owners. On this day it was Tyler's birthday and I have the distinct impression that he'd been holding on to that bottle (or one like it) for a little while. The fellow on the left is a master barman with a beard and hairstyle fit for a five dollar bill. Eminently commemoratable. He made us a pair of Wrong Negronis cold enough to bite my tongue. I would like to apologize to the very nice woman in the middle, who later explained all of their grappae to us. If I had a photo of you with your eyes open I would have run it. But this is a rangefinder, I was tired, and it's not like you all could stand around and wait for the amateur photographer to do his thing; you have a restaurant to run. And for that, I am eternally grateful.

From Garrett's Table:

"Last year I posted a recipe for cucumber and vegetable rolls. I was happy with the recipe but nevertheless thought it could use some refining. Since the weather is finally warm again I decided to give these cucumber rolls an overhaul. These rolls include poached shrimp, marinated carrots, creamy avocado, and fresh cilantro all wrapped inside sliced cucumber. The sauces are sesame vinaigrette and cilantro oil. This unique appetizer is essentially a salad and a fun way to start any summer meal. Here’s a recipe for 8 servings:

SHRIMP AND CUCUMBER ROLLS WITH SESAME VINAIGRETTE AND CILANTRO OIL

Cilantro Oil:

* 1 bunches cilantro

* Salt and sugar to taste

* 1 cup vegetable oil

* 1 Tb. toasted coriander seeds

* 1 tsp. lemon zest

Bring a pot over water to a rapid boil. Season the boiling water with salt and sugar. It should taste salty like the sea and sweet like cola. Season and ice bath similarly. Rinse the cilantro and cut away the large heavy stems at the bottom. Blanch the cilantro for 30 seconds and shock in the ice bath. Gather the blanched cilantro and squeeze to remove as much water as possible. Place the cilantro in a blender with the vegetable oil, coriander seed, and lemon zest. Blend on high for 3 minutes. Pour the oil into a strainer lined with cheesecloth, a grease filter, or a coffee filter and allow to drip for several hours. Discard the solids left behind.

Sesame Vinaigrette:

* 2 tsp chinese spicy mustard

* 2 tsp. pickled ginger

* 2 Tb. mirin

* 2 Tb. soy sauce

* 2 Tb. rice wine vinegar

* 1/2 c. vegetable oil

* 1/4 c. sesame oil

Place the mustard, ginger, mirin, soy sauce, and rice wine vinegar in a blender. Blend on high while slowly adding vegetable oil. After the vegetable oil, drizzle in the sesame oil. If the oil is not emulsified add a bit more mustard or some mayonnaise and blend once more.

Poached Shrimp:

* 1 lb. 16/20 shrimp, raw, shell on

* 1 quart water

* 1 celery stalk, sliced

* 1/2 onion, sliced

* 2 cloves garlic, crushed

* 2 slices fresh ginger

* 2 Tb. rice wine vinegar

* 1 lemon

* Salt to taste

* Cilantro oil, to taste

* Chili paste, to taste

Peel and devein the shrimp, reserving the shells. In a medium saucepan combine the shrimp shells with the water, celery, onion, garlic, ginger, vinegar, and zest and juice of the lemon. Bring to a simmer and season heavily with salt. Add the shrimp and drop the heat to low. Poach for 7 minutes and cool the shrimp in the poaching liquid.

When the shrimp cool, drain them well and cut into large pieces. Toss with cilantro oil and chili paste to taste.

To Assemble:

* 2 English cucumbers

* kosher salt

* 2 large carrots, fine julienne

* 1 Tb. mirin

* 1 tsp. soy sauce

* 1 avocado

* Poached shrimp

* Cilantro oil

* Sesame vinaigrette

* Cilantro and black sesame seeds for garnish

Cut the ends from each cucumber and wash well. Cut each cucumber in half and, using a mandolin, slice 1/16′’ thick planks from the cucumber, stopping when you reach the seedy middle. Repeat on the other side of the cucumber. Lay the slices out of a piece of paper towel and salt lightly.

Toss the julienne carrot with the mirin and soy sauce and slice the avocado into long pieces. Lay a piece of plastic wrap on a flat work surface and lay 4-5 cucumber slices on top, overlapping slightly. Place some carrots, a few pieces of avocado, and a few pieces of shrimp at the end of the sheet of cucumber. Carefully roll the cucumber around the filling using the plastic wrap. Wrap the roll tightly in the plastic wrap and twist the ends. Using a sharp knife cut each roll into 3 or 4 pieces and carefully remove the plastic wrap. Pour some sesame vinaigrette on a plate, place the rolls on top, and drizzle with cilantro oil. Garnish with cilantro and black sesame seeds."

The Soap Opera Effect is the result of a default setting on modern TVs that creates and interpolates additional frames in between the existing ones in order to produce a sharp and crisp image of the action taking place on screen.From the way people talk about it, you might think the Soap Opera Effect is some sort of bug, but it’s actually a purpose-built feature found in many modern TVs. It goes by many names, as we’ll detail later, but the technology behind it is known as video interpolation, or more commonly, motion smoothing. A feature deliberately added to most modern LCD/LED TVs, it arose as a way to solve a problem, not create one.

Unlike older CRT and plasma TVs, LCD displays have problems with motion blurring. Some are more sensitive to it than others, but when an LCD TV has to display fast motion — quick-moving sports or video games, for example — the blur can be excessive, obscuring image detail. To help combat this problem, TV manufacturers started using displays with higher refresh rates, moving from the native 60Hz refresh rate used in older TVs to more modern 120Hz panels.

Since most sources of video — including broadcast and streaming — aren’t delivered at this frame rate, though, motion smoothing came along as a way to “fake” a higher frame rate by inserting images in between the actual 30 or 60 frames per second that come from your cable box, game console, or antenna. These new images are created when your TV analyzes the picture and digitally guesses at what new images could be inserted. This frame guessing game is even used on some OLED TVs.

Homemade Insecticidal Soap Recipe

The simplest insecticidal soap is nothing more than a 2% soap solution. To make this at home, you will need:

Sprayer: Any clean spray bottle or garden sprayer will work fine for spraying insecticidal soap. Make sure the sprayer or bottle hasn’t been used for herbicides.

Pure Soap: Use a pure liquid soap, such as Castile, or all-natural soap. The active ingredient in insecticidal soap comes from the fatty acids in animal fat or vegetable oil, so it’s important to use the real thing. Don’t use detergents (which aren’t actually soaps), dish soaps, or any products with degreasers, skin moisturizers, or synthetic chemicals. Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap is usually pretty easy to find in stores, or check your local natural-foods store for other options.

Pure Water: Tap water is fine for making insecticidal soap. If you have hard water, you may want to use bottled water to prevent soap scum from building up on your plants.

To make homemade 2% insecticidal soap, mix together:

5 tablespoons soap to 1 gallon of water

OR

1 heavy tablespoon soap to 1 quart of water

Containers of garlic, pepper, vinegar, and cooking oil

Other ingredients that can be added to homemade insecticidal soap

Homemade Insecticidal Soap Recipe Variations

Like any other home remedy, there are as many variations on this recipe as there are gardeners! You can also try:

Diluted Solution: If the spray causes damage or burns your plant foliage, cut the amount of soap in half and try a 1% solution. This is the concentration usually found in commercial sprays. The lighter solution might be less effective but is gentler on plants.

Cooking Oil: To help the solution stick a little longer, add two tablespoons of light cooking oil (such as corn, canola, olive, or safflower) per gallon of water to the mix.

Vinegar: To make a spray that also targets powdery mildew, add a teaspoon of cider vinegar per gallon of water to the mix.

Garlic or Pepper: To help repel chewing insects, add a teaspoon of ground red pepper and/or garlic per gallon of water to the mix.

Bar Soap: For a less-exact recipe, drop a bar of pure soap (such as organic bar soap or Ivory) into a gallon of water and leave it overnight. Remove the bar and shake well before spraying.

I have a four gallon spray pan. If I used the bar soap technique how long would I need to leave the soap soaking / how many soaps would I need for it to be effective as an insecticide?

You don’t have to rinse off insecticidal soap, but it’s not a bad idea. The solution is only effective when it’s wet, anyway. Some plants (hawthorns, plums, cherries, and some tomato varieties, to name a few) are sensitive to insecticidal soap, especially if it’s overly concentrated or made with harsh soap. To reduce or prevent damage to plants, it wouldn’t hurt to rinse it off a few hours later, after it’s good and dry.

My roommate left a pair of floating oil candles on the center deck post on my patio. It rained really hard last night and coated my plants with lamp oil.

What can I use to clean the oil off my plants? My bonsai was directly underneath the oil shower, so all of it is soaked in oil. The leaves, trunk, roots, soil-every part of it is covered. Also, I need to wash the oil off my patio, since it is now flammable. The patio is surrounded by perennial plants that I want to keep alive. My bonsai has been rendered waterproof.

Help!

I stumbled upon this website and found that I was on the right track.

I have a problem with fire ants. As a maker of hot salsa , I decided to try this to the ants. I threw about 4 or 5 hot peppers in the blender along with vinegar and dish soap. I strained the ingredients into a measuring cup and placed it into a spray bottle. I then got this idea about adding some vegetable oil to the mix and shook it well, to emulsify it. I figured that the hot pepper would stay longer on the ants because of the oil. I then went out to the ant nest and dug around to agitate those little b&*&##S and when they came streaming out I sprayed them and the ground,and little eggs too. The next day I came back looking for another fight only to discover that they were not there. I have done this on two nest. I will video tape the next one.

Vince,

No special procedure, you just mix the ingredients together.

Reply

AvatarRob Reiman February 12, 2015 at 11:51 am

Vince – If you are using cold pressed pure neem oil, I recommend using 1 tsp of liquid soap per 2.5 ounce of neem. Mix these two ingredients together BEFORE adding to WARM (or very warm) water. The quantity of water depends on the concentration you are attempting to achieve.

If you are going to use natural soap i.e. dervived from fat and caustic soda (saponification) and live in a hard water area, you are going to have problems with the soap reacting with the dissolved calcium (scum) – use clean rainwater straight off the roof which will be calcium-free, assuming that it is not a new roof with concrete tiles – this is the closest you will get to deionised water. Alternatively, get some EDTA (ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, disodium form, commercially known as Versene and others) and mix a small amount, say a teaspoon to 1-litre, before you add the soap – you should get a nice clear soap solution.

If you are not sure if your house mains water is hard or soft, get a small glass jar with a lid, half fill with tap water and flake in some soap. Shake well – soft water will give a good permanent lather and a clear solution, hard water will take a lot more soap flakes, will form scum and will not be a clear solution.

This is what i do for ‘MITES’ mainly and works for any other little black insect that eat on top or bottom side of the leaves which suck the life of your plants, trees, flowers ect..:

Use any liquid soap or dish washing soap that is as close to unscented as possible. Just smell it, and make sure it does not have a heavy smell, if scented look for “EDTA” – (ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid) in the ingredients. Make sure there is NO CREAM, or type of HAND MOISTURIZER in the ingredient… then buy any ordinary PURE SOAP with FATTY ACIDS and OILS in the ingredients.

1.) 5 liters of water to 5 not over-filled teaspoons of liquid soap.

2.) Drop a bar of pure soap in the water and let it sit over-night.

3.) Shake well and spray.. NO MORE MITES!!!!!

4.) Or you can mix all the other ingredients for the other types of insects.

Keep in mind that solution only works while “WET”, and is recommended to wash off the soap when plants, trees, ect.. dries off, … it will not harm but will leave a soapy taste if its edible

Fungus gnats should be treated with a powdering of diatomaceous earth, work it in the top inch or two of soil. Fungus gnat larvae live in the soil eating fungus and roots so this is where you should target them. You can also follow up with Neem oil soil drench, usually 3-4 tbs per gallon. Just be aware the diatomaceous earth should fix your problem. Keep in mind you “may be” overwatering, if you allow the top couple of inches of soil to dry between waterings will drastically reduce fungus gnats naturally.

as for the person who had bad chiggers; I have found that by dusting a little sulphur on your pants from the knees down before you walk into the yard will remedy the problem. Also, chiggers take a while to bite, so if you come inside, take your pants off in the tub and scrub your legs with dry or wet towel, you will be removing 90% of the chiggers. Put the used towels in wash, or in dryer for a while.

I had not been successful with a cooking apple tree for three years (it is 3 metres tall and nearly as much spread width). I was told to look for mealy bugs and scaly mite. On finding the cottonwool like cluster here and there I thought I would try brushing with heater paraffin on the infected areas which worked so well that this year the tree was full of blossom and producing many apples. I might have been stupid by some peoples thoughts but for the first time many cookers are forming on my tree.

Here is what I do to cure all pest problems in potting soil. When you buy new potting soil it will have pests in it. All brands do. Its unavoidable. So I bake it. At 350 degrees for at least 20 min. Watch carefully because some potting mixes can catch fire though I’ve never had that happen to any of mine. Also when buying new house plants be sure to remove them from their soil and rinse their roots off very well. Add the soil they came in to the soil you bake. Re pot them in the baked soil after it has completely cooled. Spray the plants themselves with Dr. Bonners castile soap. 1 tablespoon per quart of water. If over time you see your plants looking weak, not growing etc… look closely at them and their soil through a magnifying glass. Scratch the soil and watch to see any insect movement. If any are detected first try a soil drench with the soap mixture. Wait for the soil to dry and watch again for pests. If the soap mixture does not get rid of them then remove them, spray their roots then rinse then replant in fresh baked potting soil. This is the only true way of killing pests in your soil. Also I spray my house plants at least once a month with the Castile soap mixture. Be sure to keep them out of the sun till they completely dry.

“Use a pure liquid soap, such as Castile, or all-natural soap. The active ingredient in insecticidal soap comes from the fatty acids in animal fat or vegetable oil, so it’s important to use the real thing. Don’t use detergents (which aren’t actually soaps)….or….synthetic chemicals.”

It’s important to use the real thing?

Why? Is there a genuine chemical reason to do so, or is this just some advice from a hippie gardner? This is obviously not a scholarly article because of the phrase “synthetic chemicals”

Reply

Avataranon August 25, 2017 at 11:38 am

Fatty acid insecticide worked against the aphid infestation on my chilli plant. Had to give it a couple of good dousings, and the second time put paper over the soil. That has ended up a bit greasy and seems to have the slightest layer of mould loving it.

I bought a synthetic aphid spray and they just shrugged that off, like the bottle warned they might. Another bottle, with a different ingredient, also said about immunity so I didn’t even buy it. But a fatty acid spray worked, and the plant’s even flowering again.

To produce margarine, first oils and fats are extracted, e.g. by pressing from seeds, and then refined. Oils may undergo a full or partial hydrogenation process to solidify them. The milk/water mixture is kept separate from the oil mixture until the emulsion step. The fats are warmed so that they are liquid during the mixing process. The water-soluble additives are added to the water or milk mixture, and emulsifiers such as lecithin are added to help disperse the water phase evenly throughout the oil. Other water-soluble additives include powdered skim milk, salt, citric acid, lactic acid, and preservatives such as potassium sorbate. The fat soluble additives are mixed into the oil. These include carotenoids for coloring and antioxidants. Then the two mixtures are emulsified by slowly adding the oil into the milk/water mixture with constant stirring. Next, the mixture is cooled. Rapid chilling avoids the production of large crystals and results in a smooth texture. The product is then rolled or kneaded. Finally, the product may be aerated with nitrogen to facilitate spreading it.

Created during the Roman era in Egypt, this mummy portrait - worked in encaustic (pigmented wax) - shows how much Roman realism affected the funerary art in at least this one part of Egypt, the Faiyum. The bearded young man wears a funerary white tunic and perhaps a toga or himation. The eyes are large and soulful.

The first step in producing a mummy portrait was to sketch the outlines of face and garment on a wood panel that had been prepared with distemper, transparent glue, or dark wax. Then, a mixture of beeswax with powdered pigments was prepared. The wax could be used hot or cold. When used in molten state, the wax was either pure or supplemented with resin, glue, egs, gum, or oil. The molten beeswax/ pigment mixture was laid on quickly with long even brushstrokes, employing a thinner mixture for the background and garments and thick creamy paste-like paints for the facial features.

Benefits of Xanthan Gum for Hair:

Despite its constant inclusion on haircare ingredient lists (it's the most frequently named natural substance), xanthan gum does not actually provide many benefits to the hair itself.3 Xanthan gum is a stabilizer made from sugar and causes formulations to stick together and not fall apart. Xanthan gum helps to thicken and create an even, smooth texture, so its concentration will vary depending on the product. It also functions as an emulsifier, ensuring that active ingredients work well together, Liu explains.

1. Thickens formulations: Xanthan gum is an emulsifier and can be used to thicken formulations. This allows brands to create consistent, smooth products that are the correct consistency for their intended use (leave-in versus wash-out, etc.). The feel of a product can make all the difference, as silky consistencies are often mentally associated with high quality.

2. Conditions the hair and skin: There is not much known definitively about the effect xanthan gum has on skin and hair, but Greenfield says this ingredient has been shown to moisturize the skin by keeping oils locked in. Certified trichologist Gretchen Friese agrees, saying " It is moisturizing for the hair and may also help with issues such as dry scalp." Liu agrees that there are some conditioning benefits, but cautions that not a lot of research has been done behind its use in skin and hair care.

3. Stabilizes hair products: Unlike the active ingredients, xanthan gum's inclusion in hair products is a molecular necessity. Greenfield shares that xanthan gum often acts as a stabilizer in hair products, ensuring the formulation stays together. Without xanthan gum, the formulation might separate between production and ending up on the store shelves.

4. Acts as a natural preservative: Xanthan gum is considered an all-natural preservative as it maintains the stability of the products and increases the shelf life. It is FDA approved and the Environmental Working Group gave xanthan gum its best ranking of 1, meaning it is not toxic or harmful.

Swami Ramdev (Hindi: स्वामी रामदेव), born as Ram Krishna on 11 January 1971,[1] is popularly known as Baba Ramdev. He has gained wealth and notoriety through ventures in yoga, alternative medicine and agriculture, as well as his advocacy on Indian political issues.[2]

He was born as Ram Krishn to Gulab Devi and Ram Nivas in the village Saiyad AliPur (Alipur) of Mahendragarh district in Haryana state of India. According to the affidavit filed by him to the Passport Office[1] his date of birth is 11 January 1971. He was inspired by the portraits of Ram Prasad Bismil and Subhas Chandra Bose that were hung in his room.[3] According to his statements in an open Yog Shivir at Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh when he grew up and read the autobiography of Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil, his mind was totally cleansed. After completing his middle education of eighth standard from Shahbajpur Haryana, he joined Aarsh (Arya) Gurukul, Khanpur and studied Sanskrit and Yoga under the guidance of Acharya Praduman.

After he received teachings from Acharya Baldevji, he renounced worldly life, entering into Sanyas and changed his name from Ram Krishn to Ramdev.[4] (Note: The Hindi word swami means master of conscience).

In Kalva Gurukul of Jind district in Haryana India he offered free training of Yog to villagers for some time. Then he moved to Haridwar, Uttar Pradesh and spent several years studying ancient Indian scriptures at Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya. This included a rare book of Aurobindo Ghosh, Yogik Sadhan, translated from Bangla into Hindi by Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil.[5] After reading this small booklet he went to the caves of Himalaya and practiced intense self-discipline and meditation. According to Sanjay Upadhyaya's book "Ramdev - Myth and Reality", Ramdev fell seriously ill in his childhood and through his recovery discovered his techniques of yoga and meditation.

He shot into prominence when he started the Divya Yog Mandir Trust with the company of Acharya Bal Krishna. In 2003, Aastha TV began featuring him in its morning yoga slot. Within a few years, he had gathered a huge following.[6] He is known for his efforts of popularizing yoga. The New York Times called him "an Indian, who built Yoga Empire, a product and symbol of the New India, a yogic fusion of Richard Simmons, Dr. Oz and Oprah Winfrey, irrepressible and bursting with Vedic wisdom".[7] His yog-camps are attended by a large number of people in India and abroad.

His flagship project is Patanjali Yog Peeth (a registered Trust which was inaugurated on August 6, 2006 by Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, then Vice President of India). The primary aim of this institution is to build India the world's largest centre for Ayurved and Yoga with the facilities of treatment, research and training.[8][9]

At present the trust offers treatment to those who cannot afford to pay and for the rest, it is provided at a reasonable cost. Various institutions and medical organizations are also run by the Patanjali Yoga Peeth Trust to study and improve the effectiveness of yoga against diseases like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, etc. Recently the second phase of Patanjali Yoga Peeth has also started its working.

Patanjali Ayurved College, Patanjali Chikitsalaya, Yog Gram, Go-Shala, Patanjali Herbal Botanical Garden, Organic Agriculture Farm, Patanjali Food And Herbal Park Ltd are some of its affiliated institutions which are run under the guidance of Swami Ramdev and his close associate Acharya Bal Krishn. Some useful books are also published by its sister concern Divy Prakashan.

Yog Sandesh is the authorised journal Patanjali Yoga Peeth which is being published in 11 languages viz. Hindi, English, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Bengali, Oriya, Assamese, Nepali, Kannada and Telugu. Monthly readership of this multi-lingual journal is more than one million.[10]

Patanjali Yog Peeth has acquired a Scottish Island for about £2 million which was donated by Mr.Sam and Mrs. Sunita Poddar, originally from India and living in Scotland for 25 years, have been running the UK branch of the Patanjali Yoga Peeth Trust.[11] The Little Cumbrae Island, off the fishing town of Largs in Scotland, will also serve as the Patanjali Yog Peeth's base overseas, where yoga will be taught. This project will be run by Patanjali Yogpeeth (UK) Trust.[12] They have plans to set up a wellness retreat there.

Ramdev has clarified that he has no political ambitions and is not interested in starting a political party, but feels it's his obligatory duty to reform social and political ambiguities apart from popularising yoga and thus strengthen the country.[13][14]

He has raised a number of political, social and economic issues through his yoga camps (in Hindi Yog Shivir). Most of the issues raised by him demand a drastic change in the governance policies of India.

[edit] Bharat Swabhiman

For changing governance policies, he has initiated a movement named Bharat Swabhiman along with Rajiv Dixit.

The five goals[15] of Bharat Swabhiman campaign are:

100% voting

100% nationalist thought,

100% boycott of foreign companies and adoption of swadeshi,

100% unification of the people of the nation and

100% yoga-oriented nation.

As a part of campaign, Baba Ramdev has been organising yoga camps across India to create awareness amongst people against corruption and black money.

On agriculture and dietary practices

In many yog shivira (yoga camps), he has raised the issue of increased consumption of fast foods, packed foods and soft drinks by the people. According to him these products can cause diseases and so they must not be eaten. He has also claimed that commercially available aerated drinks are harmful to due to the presence of phosphoric acids, preservatives, unknown chemicals and emulsifiers. He claims that these drinks are very harmful to the entire body and especially the stomach lining if consumed. He has also made statements along the lines of "Cold Drinks means Toilet Cleaner" and has claimed that these cold drinks are more effective at cleaning toilets than commercially available toilet cleaners.[16] He urges people in his public meetings to pledge not to consume commercial aerated drinks, to protect individual health as well as to avoid Indian wealth being transferred to multinational companies. Instead he advices the public to consume hot water, milk or traditional Indian juices only so that India may become prosperous.

He has also claimed that the use of fertilizers and pesticides has led to an undue economic load on farmers and increased the profits of large business houses involved in the business. He also claims that these practices are harmful to the general public, since the farming produce is contaminated with inorganic fertilizers and pesticides.[17] Due to this practice, the farming land is also becoming barren. He also blames corrupt practices for the miserable conditions of the poor farmers and other backward class of the society. He says that although agriculture is the biggest area which can contribute enough to India's economy yet it's farmers are the most poverty stricken class of the country. He says if villages improve then there will be a completely different India[18]

[edit] Illegal mining

Further information: Illegal mining in India

According to Baba Ramdev, there is permission for only 200 mining leases but about one lakh illegal mines are operational in the country.[19] Baba Ramdev argues that illegal mining is the biggest source of black money and that corrupt people are eying the natural resources of the country, which are present in abundant amount. Natural resources include gold, copper, coal, iron, oil and other natural resources. Plunder of natural resources is the most devastating form of national crime, according to Ramdev, yet it is the least reported.

According to conservative estimates India has natural resources worth around 10,000 lakh crore.[citation needed] Das Hajar Lakh Crore is the exact phrase used by Baba Ramdev to quote the figure at his gatherings. Baba Ramdev says that the natural resources of the country must be protected otherwise corrupt people would sell every bit of it and stash the money in tax havens. Contrary to the popular belief of tax evasion being the source of black money, Baba Ramdev points out that the nation's wealth is being plundered from the natural resources and that has resulted into the huge stockpile of black money in various tax havens.

Protests against black money

Baba Ramdev was the first to raise the issue of black money publicly in 2008[citation needed], before the assembly elections of 2009. Estimations indicate a total of Rs. 400 lakh crore, or nearly 9 trillion USD, of Indian black money outside the country[citation needed]. This is so much money that every Indian constituency could get up to 50 thousand crore for development[citation needed]. The money has been pulled outside the country via physical and technical means, with hawala, under/over invoicing being some common methods[citation needed]. Money laundering started on a large scale since 1990[citation needed].

In April 2011 Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, confirmed that there are Indian names on Swiss bank accounts.[20] Switzerland is not the only tax havens where Indian black money is stashed. Other tax havens include Dubai, Liechtenstein, Italy, and others[citation needed]. Switzerland made an official statement that, if the Indian government approaches them, they are willing to declare the names of Indian account holders[citation needed]. However, no such approach has been made by Indian government. Baba Ramdev has said that most of the money belongs to the ministers, government officials and bureaucrats[citation needed].

Apart from this, there is an estimated Rs. 100–150 lakh crore of black money in India's internal economy. India's total GDP is in the range of 60 lakh crore and economists[who?] suggest that at least twice of this amount is circulating in black, which is roughly between 100 and 150 lakh crore[citation needed]. Ramdev has suggested many measures to curb the amount of black money circulating inside the internal economy. Baba Ramdev pointed out that total currency note circulation in India is 10 lakh crore. If the GDP is 60 lakh crore, then currency note circulation should be 1/50 of that amount, which is only 2 lakh crore. A basic economy concept states that a currency note can travel 50 to 100 transaction points over a year. Hence if RBI has circulated 10 lakh crore of currency then the total Indian economy should be at least 50 × 10 lakh crore = 500 lakh crore. This clearly indicates that there is huge amount of black money circulating inside the internal economy and an equally high amount of unaccounted wealth is being siphoned out of the country every year by corrupt ministers and bureaucrats.

Swami Ramdev has been associated with the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement and was involved in the Jan Lokpal agitation[21]

In February 2011, he gave the following steps for eradication of black money:[22]

Declare all Indian wealth lying outside the country illegally as national wealth.

Agree to and accept the U.N. Convention against Corruption – pending since 2006.

Access, monitor and disrupt payment gateway servers enabling corrupt people to manage money in tax havens.

Scrutinizing accounts of people having credit/debit cards of foreign banks without any foreign work/relation.

Disabling operations of any bank from a tax haven country.

Withdrawal and demonetizing of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 currency notes – so as to avoid misuse of unaccounted money and quick arrest of the entire locally circulated black money, bribing, and fake note traffic.

Death penalty provision for the corrupt persons in Indian Penal Code.

Many countries like USA, Germany and other smaller African countries have adopted similar steps to get back their black money. However in India the government calls Ramdev's idea as impractical. The practicality of such steps has been called into question.[13]

He has raised the issue of Indian money stashed away illegally in Swiss banks, which is estimated to be anywhere between 1 and 1.5 trillion USD. He says that the government must take immediate action and bring back the money as it belongs to the people of India. Not only this, he openly charges that this black money has been taken out of the country illegally and also very strongly demands a capital punishment to all those Indians or non-resident Indians, who acquire, handle and stash black money. He suggests that Mauritius route is a tax haven for black money operators in India and this route should be cut effectively by the Indian government. He had also demanded (as early as September 2009) the removal of currency of denominations of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000, saying that this would curb corruption, black money and terrorism.[23][24]

[edit] Anticorruption rally on 27 February 2011 at Ramlila Maidan

On 27 February 2011 Baba Ramdev held a large rally of over 1 lakh people at the Ramlila Maidan, New Delhi to protest against corruption. Those present at the rally included Baba Ramdev, Acharya Balkrishna, Ram Jethmalani, Anna Hazare, Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi, Swami Agnivesh and many others. All members spoke and explained how corruption was rampant in the country and how the government itself was indulging in it. The most highlighted topic was Indian black money lying in tax havens of Switzerland.

Arvind Kejriwal mentioned that Anna Hazare would hold a fast in April 2011 to put pressure on the government to enact the JanLokPal Bill.

It is a noticeable fact that no major news channel covered this event[citation needed].

[edit] Protest at Delhi

Baba Ramdev declared to go on an Anshan (indefinite fast) on June 4, 2011 at Ramlila Ground Delhi[25] to pressure the Central Government to root out corruption from India and bring back the black money stashed away in various financial institutions abroad. After this declaration the government was said to have set up a panel to suggest steps to curb black money and its transfer abroad, in an apparent bid to placate Ramdev.[26]

When Ramdev arrived at Delhi airport on June 1, four senior ministers of the UPA government met him on the airport and tried to persuade him by telling of the government's initiative on corruption.[27] On 4 June morning 65,000 followers of the yoga teacher had gathered at Ramlila Ground[28] By noon queues extending up to 3 km from the entry point of Ramlila Grounds and were seen chanting 'Vande Mataram'. In the evening a press conference was organised by Kapil Sibbal made public a letter from Ramdev's camp to call off their agitation. Ramdev took it as a betrayal of the Government and hardened the position by declaring not to take back his Satyagrah until a proper government ordinance is announced in place of forming a committee.

Satyagrah was going on even in the night of 4 June 2011. Sources informed Baba Ramdev that a huge police force can try to clear Ramlila Ground and if it is not done they can also kill him in a fake encounter or set fire in the tents.[29] At midnight, a huge team of 10,000 officers of the Delhi Police and RAF raided the ground when most of the Satyagrahis were sleeping on the and Ramdev was also sleeping on the dias along with his core group.[30] A large police force lobbed tear gas shells and lathicharged to evict the crowd from 1a.m. to 4 a.m. The tent was set on fire at many places. Cold water was thrown over power generators to create complete darkness to prevent any video recording of the whole attack. However most media persons recorded what was going on.

Police had arranged buses to drop supporters at railway stations and bus stands in advance; had ammunition ready and all the policemen were in battle-gear wearing vests and helmets and kept some ambulances on standby. Ramdev was arrested while attempting to disguise himself in women's clothing.[31]

Delhi Police forcefully detained Ramdev at Safdargunj Airport in complete isolation for a few hours and then deported him to his Ashram in Haridwar via helicopter.[32] Police fired tear gas, lathcharged people who were reportedly peacefully fasting. 53 persons were injured and treated at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) hospital, AIIMS trauma center, and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.[33][34][35] Government stopped media person or anybody to enter the hospital to check the injured. Protesters huddled near the Metro station, bus depots and railway stations. Many walked down to Gurdwara Bangla Sahib and other nearby Ashrams.[36] According to New Delhi railway station authorities, supporters continued to leave in batches through the course of the day. While several supporters spent the day in a park near Ramlila Maidan, others took shelter in Arya Samaj at Paharganj.[37]

Baba Ramdev was taken by police out side Delhi and was banned from entering Delhi for 15 days. After being banned from entering Delhi for the next 15 days, Union Home Secretary G. K. Plillai said the Baba was on his way to his Ashram at Haridwar under police custody.[38] On reaching Haridwar, Swami Ramdev declared in a press conference that his fast unto death will continue.

About 5,000 supporters were still missing according to Baba Ramdev.[39] Dr. Jaideep Arya, a key advisor of Ramdev’s team, said that about 19 girls students from the Chotipur Gurukul, who were seated near the dais, are estimated to be still missing.[40] Suman, women’s representative of the Trust, said many of these girls were roughed up when the police tried to reach Swamiji and were crying since police officials were pulling their hair, dragging them badly and their clothes were torn. Police, however, said no one was missing.[40] A senior police officer reported that they were forced to retaliate after Baba Ramdev's supporters started throwing stones and flower pots at them.[41] Police also released CCTV footage to prove that no woman was beaten by them.[42] TV channels were telecasting the footage of the scene in Ramlia Ground.

[edit] Aftermath of the Delhi protest and fast unto death

Ramdev accused the government of cheating him, and alleged that there was a conspiracy to kill him and that he was threatened during a meeting with senior ministers.[43] All political parties other than the Congress Party condemned the police action, called it undemocratic and naked fascism,[44] deplorable and shortsighted.[45] [46] It was even compared it with the Emergency[44] and the Jalianwala.[44] Apart from politicians, he was also supported by civil societies as well. A senior poet laureate Dr Madan Lal Verma 'Krant' wrote an article on his blog KRANT and said that the action of the government was more shameful than the Jalianwala of British period. He argued that the British Government had ordered firing in the day whereas Indian Government took such a brutal action after midnight when all of the protesting persons (hi.satyagrahi) were sleeping.[47] Activist Anna Hazare termed the crackdown of the agitation a strangulation of democracy. He said: "There was no firing otherwise the eviction was similar to Jallianwala Bagh massacre".[48] He boycotted his lokpal panel meeting with the government on 6 June and decided to go on a one day fast on 8 June. His allies RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal, former Law MinisterShanti Bhushan, and Swami Agnivesh also criticised the police action to evict the hunger strikers forcefully[49] Protests were held in many different parts of the country.[50] Protest were held in Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Jammu and Lucknow as well as among other several cities of India.[51]

Soon after this, a vacation bench of the Supreme Court of India comprising justice B. S. Chauhan and justice Swatantra Kumar issued notices to the Union Home Secretary, Chief Secretary of Delhi, Delhi Administration, and Delhi Police Commissioner asking them to respond within two weeks, after taking suo motu cognizance of forceful eviction of yoga guru Baba Ramdev and his followers from the Ramlila Maidan, New Delhi.[52] The National Human Rights Commission also issued notices on June 6, 2011 to the Government of India and Delhi State Government seeking reports within two weeks on the midnight crackdown on Baba Ramdev’s supporters at Ramlila ground.[53] After being evicted from Delhi, Baba Ramdev wanted to continue his fast from Noida but was denied permission by the Uttar Pradesh government. Many pepole like Sri Sri Ravi Shankar also forced him to end his fast. Ultimately, he decided to continue his idefinite fast satyagraha at Haridwar only from 4 June 2011 onwards.[54][55][56] After repeated attempts to end his fast Baba Ramdev's health worsened and was taken to the Himalaya Institute of Medical Sciences on the seventh day of his fast.[57][58][59]

[edit] End of hunger strike

Baba Ramdev ended his fast on the ninth day by drinking a glass of juice at Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Dehradun, where he was recuperating from the seventh day of his fast. After repeated request from Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and various other saints he ended his fast.[60] Political reactions came in from all major parties expressing their happiness about ending the fast. BJP Spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said they have a "sense of satisfaction" that the fast has ended. Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy said that the fast was "successful" and termed the government as "monstrous". While the ruling party Congress spokesperson Janardan Dwivedi gave a reaction by saying it as "good".[61]

[edit] Anti-Ramdev campaign by Congress

Hours after 4 June, the Congress-led UPA government started a massive campaign against Baba Ramdev, Acharya Balkrishna and Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust. Multiple allegations were raised against Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna.

Some of them being:

Baba Ramdev is involved in tax evasion.

Acharya Balkrishna is a Nepali staying illegally in India.

Baba Ramdev exports products that are banned in USA.

Acharya Balkrishna has a fake Indian passport.

Donations received by Baba Ramdev consist of black money.

Congress party launched a booklet to criticise and expose Ramdev during its election campaign in Uttar Pradesh for the 2012 elections. [62] [63]

However as investigations were carried out by various agencies at both state and centre level, eventually nothing was found wrong with either Baba Ramdev or Acharya Balkrishna. Acharya Balkrishna was cleared of fake passport charges.[64] NEW DELHI, July 25: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of India has approached the External Affairs Ministry seeking revocation of the passport of Balkrishna, an aide for Yoga guru Ramdev, as the agency alleged that it was procured on the basis of fake documents.

Views on AIDS and sex education

In December 2006, Swami Ramdev claimed to cure diseases such as AIDS and cancer through yoga and ayurvedic drugs sold by his Divya Yoga Mandir Trust. He also went on to suggest that sex education should be replaced by yoga, as his way to AIDS awareness, prevention and a cure.[81] "Sex education in schools need [sic] to be replaced by yoga education," Ramdev told reporters at the state health minister's residence. As a consequence of these public statements he was sent a cease and desist order by the Indian Union Health Ministry to avoid making such claims in the future, and the civil society threatened legal action.[82] In response, Ramdev retracted his statement and said the claims were not directly his, but those of patients who practiced yoga.[83]

[edit] Claims of curing cancer

Other press reports quoted him as claiming to have a cure for cancer of the breast, liver, prostate, uterus, pituitary gland, and brain, as well as leukemia, by practicing breathing exercises. In a residential camp held in Yog Gram, Haridwar during 19–25 June 2008, several cancer patients stepped forward to recount first-hand stories of their successful bouts with prostate and breast cancer and leukemia using Pranayam, or breathing exercises.[84] Swami Ramdev has claimed to have documented proof of his successes, but has failed to provide any to the media or the Health Ministry.

[edit] Views on homosexuality

In July 2009, when Delhi High Court gave a verdict under decriminalizing homosexuality in Delhi, the swami called a press conference and said, "This verdict of the court will encourage criminality and sick mentality. This kind of thing is shameful and insulting to all of us. We are blindly following the West in everything. This is breaking the family system in India. Homosexuals are sick people, they should be sent to hospitals for treatment. If the government brings this law, I will take this matter to the streets of Delhi in protest."[85]

I remember posting about ESA - European Space Agency's Fluid Science Lab (FSL) when I was training at the European Astronaut Centre. Yesterday I put this training to good use installing a new experiment known as PASTA (Particle STAbilised Emulsions and Foams). Unlike the pasta you may know, this PASTA studies the physics of emulsions in microgravity. These are a mixture of two or more liquids that usually separate without the addition of surface-active agents and emulsifiers 💧 It will now be monitored and controlled from the ground by the Belgian User Support and Operations Centre (BUSOC) in Brussels – the operations centre responsible for Columbus's external payloads and the FSL.

While it is normal for people to age as they get older, it is not normal to be the victim of premature aging. This can happen when people are (because of bad decisions or through harmful environmental factors) exposed to unnecessarily harmful things.

The human body is a wonderfully created piece of equipment and it can take a lot of punishment but that is no excuse to abuse it.

This being the case, it behooves everyone to avoid the following potentially-aging factors and activities:

1. Cigarettes. People who smoke gradually develop leathery, wrinkled, dry, and sagging skin--as a matter of fact, you can often pick out smokers out of a crowd, especially if you knew what to look for and everyone's actual age. Those who are supposed to be in their 30s usually look as if they are in their 40s; those who are in their 20s as if in their 30s or 40s; and so on.

As for what causes this phenomenon, you can easily blame all the toxic chemicals that spring from cigarette smoke (e.g., benzene, formaldehyde, ammonia, acetone, carbon monoxide, arsenic, hydrogen cyanide, lead, carbon monoxide--just to name a few!) and perhaps the by-products of human-lung-processed second-hand smoke. These factors not only kill cells, they're carcinogenic.

2. Disease. While it may be impossible to avoid certain diseases, it is possible to avoid or reduce the chances of getting some diseases--most notably, communicable diseases. Sexually transmitted diseases (syphilis, herpes, gonorrhea, Chlamydia, etc.), for example, can be avoided by not engaging in wantonly promiscuous, unprotected sex, especially with multiple partners.

Additionally, proper hygiene can protect people against diseases like tuberculosis, hepatitis, meningitis, etc.; other precautions may include regular checkups, getting treatment as soon as peculiar symptoms arise (or test results reveal signs of trouble), and abiding faithfully by prescribed treatment. Once disease is allowed to develop or run rampant, it can damage important parts of the body.

Such "damage," meanwhile, causes the body to work harder than necessary, possibly leading to premature aging.

3. Depression. No, this is not referring to occasionally feeling sad or even feeling sad often, but for good reasons (losing a job, the death of a relative, being diagnosed with a serious disease, etc.), albeit, at the same time, being able to function normally and not being overwhelmed by the feelings of sadness. These feelings are normal and won't likely make you age any faster.

Clinical depression, however, has been shown to affect the body in many negative ways; in fact, it has been associated with development or exacerbation of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, dementia and cancer. It can also make the human body less capable of dealing with stress or exhibiting healthy immune responses to certain physiological problems.

It has even been connected to inflammation, a known risk factor for many medical problems, including premature aging.

4. Stress. Many things can help stress people out, thus putting pressure on that can both in the short and long run have very harmful effects. Stress, for one thing, prompts the body to produce excessive amounts of certain hormones and biochemical substances, such as adrenalin. It is no wonder, then, that stress has been linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and, possibly, even cancer.

It is most probably also linked to premature aging.

5. Excessive exposure to the sun and other skin stressors. Were it not for the ozone layer, cosmic radiation from space and ultraviolet rays from the sun would most probably eventually wipe out all life on this planet, most notably by continuously damaging skin cells. It is no wonder, in fact, that scientists use the skin of frogs and other creatures with exceedingly sensitive skin to ascertain how well the ozone layer is doing its job from year to year.

Even with outer-earth-atmosphere ozone protection, excessive exposure to the sun and other skin stressors (such as sun-tanning lamps, harsh chemicals, radiation, etc.) can be very damaging, not only by making people more susceptible to skin cancer but also by causing them to age faster than normal.

6. Alcohol and the use of so-called "illegal" drugs. Alcohol, in general, appears to have the same aging effects that cigarette smoke has. These two drugs, in turn, appear to be as toxic (if not more toxic) as the so-called "illegal drugs."

The truth is that all these drugs make people age quicker, quite simply, by systematically destroying a body's healthy cells. By the way, that, the inability to keep reproducing new, vibrant cells, is what happens when we age, a process that gets worse and worse with each passing year. These drugs just speed up the deteriorating process.

The question that begs asking is "Why would anyone want to exacerbate an already naturally-declining biological mechanism?"

7. Lack of sleep & succumbing to erratic sleep patterns. One of the best things people can do for their bodies is to get plenty of deep REM sleep. During sleep, the body has a chance to rebuild cells, give the organs some rest, and prepare the body for the next day's stressors and chachallenges

8. Lack of proper nutrition. Our bodies need certain vitamins, minerals and other nutrients on a daily basis. These are best obtained from naturally-grown (i.e., organic) fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, dairy products, and (non-factory farm produced) meats. Vitamin and mineral supplements might help but we don't yet know for sure how beneficial these things are and whether they are as nutritious as eating a proper diet.

9. Exposure to pollutants. Unfortunately, this is probably one of the least controllable factors on this list. Like it or not, there are many pollutants in the air, water and food that we consume on a daily basis. Processed foods, for example, are chock-full of preservatives, emulsifiers, taste/appetite enhancers, and special conditioners.

Artificial sweeteners, just to name one specific group of highly toxic foods, likely aid in damaging cells and in putting unnecessary negative stresses on our organs. Yet, the most popular alternatives (refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup) are just as bad for you, if not worse.

All these things make our bodies work harder, thus cutting down on natural biological efficiency and longevity. While some pollutants may be impossible to avoid (especially those in our air and water), we can definitely take some precautions in order to reduce some of the pollution-oriented stresses on our bodies.

10. Lack of exercise. Experts agree that exercise is probably one of the simplest and most efficient ways to help the human body stay healthy, young and vibrant. No, exercise can't turn back the clock, nor can it stop the aging process, but it can help to make your body more efficient, thus increasing cell reproduction and helping the organs to function at peak capacity. Facts of Pueraria Mirifica

The herb Pueraria Mirifica (grown and used in Thailand for over 100 years) is rich in isoflavones, providing female hormone-like effects and significant breast enhancement for 90% of all women. This magic herb contains chemicals called phytoestrogens - natural compounds which mimic the effects of the female sex hormone estrogen.

The isoflavone content of Pueraria Mirifica is about 40 times greater than soybeans. Since isoflavone is similar in molecular structure to hormones produced in the body, it is absorbed gently.

Studies indicate additional beneficial effects on menstrual abnormalities (PMS), improvement of the hair, skin, cardiac diseases, and anti-depression. Nature, an English science magazine, published that Pueraria Mirifica also contained puerine (not found in isoflavone from soybeans) which gives Pueraria its breast-enhancing effect.

Recommended intake: 2 cookies a day with plenty intake of water and bite slowly will get you a nice body. (You can eat more but not too much per day.) Those who are pregnant or having menstration are not recommended to consume.)

Castle Beach Fire Department is proud to present the brand new Hazmat 1. Built on a 2017 Spartan Gladiator cab with SVI bodywork, this rig was delivered on May 6, 2017 and replaces the 2016 Seagrave Marauder II Hazmat rig that was totaled in an accident. As the role of the Hazardous Materials Team evolves, so did the apparatus. Differences in the new rig as compared to the previous Seagrave include the addition of a slide-out compartment, which added space for command personnel. While it appears that the rig has less compartmentation than the previous rig, the rig contains the same amount of equipment and still has extra space for new technologies, thanks to the awesome work of the manufacturer! This apparatus can serve multiple roles on the scene such as a command center, rehab area, mobile laboratory, and a changing area.

A great place to wander around and pause for a drink, at the Hotel Hotel in the Nishi Building.

newacton.com.au/events

See architectural notes here..

architectureau.com/articles/hotel-hotel/

After launching up the stairs, the visitor finds themselves in the vaguely subterranean hotel lobby proper, surrounded by furniture and objects specially developed for it by Broached Commissions and designed by the likes of Lucy McRae, Adam Goodrum and Charles Wilson. These items share space with mid-century furniture pieces selected by Hotel Hotel’s room designer Don Cameron. Fender Katsalidis Architects and Japan’s Suppose Design Office designed the Nishi building proper, and March Studio is responsible for much of the lobby. That makes for a lot of “chefs in the kitchen,” with more unmentioned, but the various strands of the design do somehow emulsify into a single, coherent experience.

Molonglo Group worked closely with Cameron to develop a sensibility for the hotel as a whole. They describe this as inspired by the romantic ideal of the Australian shack, which relates in turn to ideas of authenticity and sustainability. The idea that the shack, a housing type born of grinding rural poverty, could inform a purpose-built, boutique hotel for Canberra’s fly-in fly-out professional class might be a little too rich for some. Shack chic rhetoric aside, though, there is a lot to be admired of a hotel interior that features furnishings and materials of enduring quality, many of which are “vintage” at that. Whether or not they will be able to weather the vagaries of fashion and demand for the forever-new remains to be seen, but for now the sentiment is commendable, even brave.

From Garrett's Table:

"Chicken noodle soup is the ultimate comfort food. Some swear that this rich concoction of chicken broth, egg noodles, carrots, and celery is medicinal, powerful enough to cure the common cold. Everyone’s grandmother has a perfect recipe and, I promise, this is not your grandmother’s recipe.

To dress the dish up I decided to put chicken noodle soup on my spoon instead of putting my spoon in my chicken noodle soup. These are chicken noodle soup liquid center ravioli. Inside the egg noodle ravioli is a liquid center of reduced chicken stock that’s flavored with the essential ingredients of chicken noodle soup. I made the stock with roasted chicken bones and plenty of carrots and celery. I allowed the stock to simmer and reduce overnight to intensify the flavors. It was so reduced, in fact, that when it cooled down the natural gelatin extracted from the chicken bones set the stock into a firm gel. To add some richness I emulsified a touch of chicken fat, also known as Schmaltz or Jewish Gold, into the stock when I seasoned it. Using a spherical ice cube tray I then chilled the stock in the refrigerator to gel it into neat little spheres.

Using Grant Achatz’s pasta recipe for his liquid center truffle ravioli, I encased the gelled stock spheres in rich egg noodle. I cooked the ravioli in simmering chicken stock, which both cooked the noodle and re-liquified the gelled chicken essence. After tossing in a bit of melted butter, I placed the ravioli on serving spoons and garnished with carrots and celery. The brunoise carrots I poached in butter and the celery I seasoned with celery salt and poached in celery juice.

Place the whole ravioli in your mouth at once and bite down to release an oozing center of chickeny goodness. The rich center is finished by the fresh flavors of carrots and celery. Spring, summer, winter, or fall, this is a fantastic way to start a meal. "

This is the Peeping Tomboy, a cocktail created by Devon Tarby in 2017 and published in the Cocktail Codex in 2018. Sherry cobblers that use amontillado sherry often have notes of stone fruit and nutes and this drink takes a straight-forward approach to amping up those flavors. The most notable ingredient doing this is the toasted almond infused apricot liqueur. Providing reinforcement is a small addition of cognac, which also adds a bit more proof and depth. The smart thing about this cocktail is that it aims to be a fall weather cocktail with feeling out-of-place in a different season. Historically, cobblers were a hot-weather drink because of the copious amount of pebble ice used per serving (also where the name comes from). Sherry and cognac are often used in winter cocktails. The myriad of muddled fruit can also justify this as a spring weather drink. It's not often you find a fall cocktail for every season.

1 lemon wedge

1 orange slice

1 slice season stone fruit (I used apricot)

1.5 oz amontillado sherry

0.25 oz toasted almond-infused apricot liqueur (see note)

0.25 oz cognac (Tarby uses Pierre Ferrand Ambre)

1 tsp demerara gum syrup (see note)

Add the lemon, orange, and syrup to a shaker tin and muddle well. Add all of the remaining ingredients along with a small scoop of crushed or pebble ice. Whip shake until the ice is mostly melted. Strain into a chilled double rocks glass or cobbler glass filled with crushed or pebble ice. Garnish with a mint sprig, fruit slices, and any seasonal fruit you can manage to fit.

Note: To infuse the apricot liqueur, toast a handful of slice or slivered almonds until they change color a bit. Add to a vacuum seal bag with apricot liqueur (I'd recommend 375 ml) and sous vide for 2 hours at 145 deg F. After that, plunge the bag into an ice bath. Strain with a fine mesh sieve and bottle. If still cloudy (and that bothers you), strain through a coffee filter and then bottle. The infusion is lovely, but if you don't bother, this drink will still be delicious.

The gum syrup is a 2:1 ratio by weight of demerara syrup to water with gum arabic. To full emulsify the gum arabic, you will need to sous vide this for 2 hours like above. For this drink, it's not especially necessary so stick to a more basic syrup if you don't have this on-hand.

Hydrogen peroxide bath. Cut out a triangle, throw in HP. HP and emulsifying agent react terribly. The mixture turns and bubbles and hisses. Why is that? I would love a scientific explanation...(too lazy to do my own research).

Toning, moisterizing, anti-wrinkle, tightening, anti-blemish, healing, eye puffiness and even scar reduction... This does it all! Another of our spa quality products at a small fraction of the price!

4 oz is $21. $2 off shipping with the purchase of two items. Three or more and shipping is free!

A cream is a combination of oil in water or water in oil, with an emulsifier and/or stabilizer. Based on ancient and modern formulas, in this version, my Infused Oil, with up to 20 different healing herbs, is combined with rose hydrosol or rose infusion, along with locally sourced beeswax. A hint of shea butter, camellia seed and rosehip seed oils is added for healing severe damage, as well as bioavailable Vitamin E. To control outbreaks, I've added turmeric essential oil. GSE is used as a preservative and gum Arabic as an emulsifier. For fragrance, I've included rose Otto, lavender, and ylang essential oils. For reducing puffiness and dark circles under the eyes, cucumber extract powder is also included. Unlike most creams, I have ensured that this product is totally vegetarian.

Have you heard the old herbalist's rule of anything that goes on your skin, you should be able to eat? Since the skin is an organ of absorption and elimination, I combine only food quality, all natural organic ingredients to create one of the highest quality, yet inexpensive, creams on the market.

There is nothing in these creams that is artificial or unusable by the body, and are Environmentally friendly with all natural, biodegradable ingredients. I created these for myself and others who had a hard time finding effective products. I use them all the time. Moisturizing and healing your skin with a pure product that smells delicious and works better than nearly anything you've ever tried is complete luxury.

Use sparingly. A little goes a long way... Goes great under powder or cream make-up, and as a night cream.

REVIEW

"The Belgians' extraordinary diversity of beers, and their love of gastronomy, have long emulsified. At least as far back as Escoffier, terms like "Belgian" or "Flemish" usually indicated that a dish contained beer.

The influence of Belgium is readily recognised by British writer Sue Nowak, whose new Beer Cookbook is a densely textual paperback with more than 150 recipes. In my own writings, I have always laboured the point that beer can be used in many different ways: as a marinade, in braising, sauces, batters, doughs, and so forth. Nowak goes into more detail, adding notes on the making of aspic with beer, caramelising, poaching and preserving, for example.

Many of the recipes are her own; at least one is mine, passed on by way of Sophie Grigson. Others are from restaurateurs such as Rick Stein (cod with pale ale); Keith Floyd (chicken with dry stout); and Albert Roux (beef braised in India Pale Ale).

Nowak also writes an annual paperback guide to British pubs that serve good food. Some these feature in her cookbook. Heather Gant, of the Skirrid Mountain Inn, near Abergavenny, Gwent, contributes a paté with porter. Phillip Buswell, from the Tollemache Arms, Harrington, Northamptonshire, offers smoked halibut with stout. Helen Stephenson, from the Mason's Arms, Windermere, Cumbria, proposes chicken with damson beer. Catherine Maxwell Stuart, of Traquair House, Innerleithen, near Peebles, uses her own castle-brewed Scottish ale in a caramel-ish, crusty, rice pudding.

Nowak's cookbook has chapters on every imaginable category of dish, from starters and soups to vegetarian and cheese plates, separate sections on hot and cold desserts and baked items.

She also proposes some menus. I like the one that finishes with plain chocolates and Gordon's Scotch Ale."

Another early rise. Breakfast at Red Rock Cafe. Very good. Sat with my feet in the hot tub for a bit. Left and drove to Jerome. Cool "Wild West" town on a mountainside. Packed full of people though and like everywhere else in AZ no one wears masks indoors. Ridiculous since there is still a pandemic and AZ has a high infection rate. Also the Delta variant is much more transmissible than previous variants. Ugh, people suck! We walked around and popped in to multiple art galleries (with masks on). Drove on to Cottonwood while waiting for a table at Merkin Vineyards restaurant. Food was ok. Cheese plate was good. Cacio e pepe came out coagulated instead of emulsified which I wasn't impressed by. I mean I do that on my own at home, but resto's shouldn't serve that. Nit picky, but still. Drove back to Phoenix with a couple of stops for pictures of the giant saguaros. K wasn't feeling my last bit of picture taking. Got to our hotel, returned our rental car, and made a dinner of smoothies at the only place that was close.

This is how I make coffee in the morning. As one would hope with routines, both the speed and the results of this one are improving with time.

Espresso is the result of almost-boiling water at high pressure (~8 bars or 116 PSI) being forced at a consistent rate through coffee beans ground to a specific range of fineness.

This video doesn't show the grinding of the beans, distribution and tamping - basically, the first two-thirds of the process. This is just about brewing, the "fun" part.

What you're seeing here is a bottomless or "naked" portafilter (the tool which holds the coffee grounds) versus a traditional model with spouts. The bottomless PF is a great debugging tool for making espresso because you can gauge the quality of your grind, distribution and tamping by watching the brewing process.

When things go right, "pulling a shot" can be a beautiful and somewhat mesmerizing thing to watch. While practically impossible to perfect, the extraction in this video turned out pretty well in regards to the visuals.

Grouphead Flushing

Before extraction, it's recommended to "flush" the grouphead by running water through it. This brings its temperature down toward the target (roughly 200° F, in this case.) Additionally, the water pre-heats the cup.

There should be a minimal delay between flushing and extraction, since the grouphead temperature will quickly rise again if the boiler (heater) is on. I was relatively slow here, as I shot this video a few months ago. These days, I'm faster and there is much less idle time.

Brewing / Extraction

During extraction, it's good to see a deep reddish color, striations or "tiger striping" from the coffee coming out of the portafilter. It shouldn't be glacial, nor gushing in terms of "flow rate" - extremes on either end are undesirable.

Brewing should typically be stopped between 25-30 seconds, or when "blonding" occurs. There are also targets for ratios of extraction, i.e., 20 grams of espresso in 30 seconds and so forth.

I watch extraction runtime, but don't weigh the results to determine extraction ratios etc. Some roasters provide recommended parameters for their beans; e.g., 18.5 grams, with an extraction time of 28 seconds at 200° F.

In this case you're seeing Roastco "Oscuro Nuevo" espresso roast beans, perhaps 19 grams, being used in a 20g VST basket.

Results, Observations and Miscellany

There's a memorable 15:15:15 rule about espresso that I've heard.

• Coffee used within 15 days of roasting

• Grounds used within 15 minutes of grinding

• Espresso tasted within 15 seconds of extraction

In regards to appearance, good espresso should have deep color with some mottling, minimal bubbles and a solid layer of crema (an emulsification of oils from the beans) on the top; good crema should maintain its structure for around two minutes. If you're using a glass cup, you can also observe the layers as they swirl and settle within the glass.

In regards to taste, good espresso should be almost sweet, typically with hints of chocolate, butterscotch and whatever other colourful language roasters like to use to describe their products. What I look for is a natural sweetness, light acidity and ultimately an absence of excessive bitterness (water temperature too high) or sourness (too low). A one-second difference in extraction time can also have a notable effect on your results, in terms of balance and strength of taste.

I've heard people recommend consuming a shot in three sips, to enjoy the separate layers. Crema is unique in that it's a concentrated mix of the oils in the beans, and can be fairly different than the underlying coffee.

A fresh roast is critical to quality. From my experience, the consistency and quality of extraction goes downhill toward the two week mark. Then again, the last beans from my grinder always seem to produce fairly-runny extractions; perhaps there's something to the weight applied by the beans stacked above during grinding. At present, I go through an 8-oz bag of beans in about a week.

This is effectively what I've learned thus far about making espresso. I get pretty consistent results, and ideally, espresso that is quite tasty. I don't plan on opening a coffee shop any time soon, but I'd like to think I can make something close to my professional neighbours in terms of taste. I think I still make stuff that's a bit on the acidic / bitter side, but I'm working on it.

To close, quoting former comedian Dennis Miller, "'Course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong."

I'm not normally in the habit of photographing food labels, but I literally had to do this one. It was on the back of a single serve Christmas pudding. The reason for the photo was that neither my wife nor I could read it to find out how long to heat it for. Even with our strongest reading glasses, we could not quite see all this. The whole label was just 30mm in height. I think I worked out the lower case letters to be slightly less than half a millimetre. So, we took the photo and stuck it on the big screen of our computer monitor. Are these labels getting smaller and smaller, or is it just our tired old eyes getting worse?

It was worth it in the end as it was very tasty, especially once I laced it with a one to one ratio of rum butter!

And I was able to see that it had all my favourite ingredients too. Once I got past the actual ingredients that I recognised which took up just 45%, the remaining 55% had those wonderful things like thickeners (1442, 1412, 466, 464), raising agents (510, 450, 341), Psyllium husk (I don't even know what that is), emulsifier (471) and of course the old favourite, sulphites! Yummo! ; )

TOKYO MISO TONKOTSU RAMEN *** 東京味噌とんこつラーメン ***

Silky pork based broth mixed w/ homemade white miso,,

with downtown Tokyo topping; extra char-siu

Although Misoya takes pride in their miso-based broths, I couldn't resist the new menu item - tonkotsu broth with home-made Tokyo style miso, no less.

The broth itself was nicely made - it was not at all greasy, perhaps a bit on the milder side and had an appetizing milky consistency ( that whitish-yellow color is difficult to achieve, actually); it was also well-emulsified and balanced. The umami in the broth came from the miso itself, as well as dried scallop and squid, most likely; that said, there was no MSG, as far as I could tell.

The noodles were of the medium thickness variety - those were cooked just right. I am not certain where Misoya sources their ramen, but their noodles appeared to be a touch more sophisticated than their mainstream counterparts used in most ramen restaurants in NYC.

Toppings were quite good, although I did get a small piece of a clam shell in my bowl. Noteworthy: I can not think of another ramenaya in the City that serves ramen of any kind with fresh clams, which were rather enjoyable for my palate. The bowl came with some ground pork, albeit not char siu (I ordered two pieces on the side) - pork was unremarkable, but quite pleasant nonetheless. The bowl was also garnished with an egg, wood ear mushrooms, fish cake, nori, bean sprouts and Napa cabbage - none were overwhelming, but again, it was a good addition to the broth and the noodles.

I couldn't help but notice the broth to noodle ration in my bowl - I would've loved a touch more broth in a slightly bigger bowl; that said, the serving size was just right for how hungry I was at the time.

Overall, Tonkotsu Ramen at Misoya was pleasant, satisfying and comforting, just like good ramen is meant to be.

There was a thread in the group that covered tips on how to complete the 365. Perry's number 7 (I think) was 'don't get behind in your uploading'. I wrote on the same thread that Perry's number 7 was the most important thing in my experience. I have fallen foul of Perry's number 7. I am trying to catch up without much time available, and I'm slipping in my commenting. I am, what Rod would call... a bad Flickr Buddy.

And, here we are again with rocks and waves. Staying on an exposed lighthouse meant these were in abundance, and as my usual haunts are less wavy and more hilly, it was good to get a bit more experience at the seashore. I didn't intend this to be the picture for the day, but it panned out that it was the only one that came out reasonably.

After a walk around the island we headed off inland for a look round and came to the small town of Ellon for a spot of lunch. The cafe selected was very busy (a good sign, you'd think), and the last table was secured. Then I realised most of the clientele had about 35 years on me, but still... they weren't as old as the furnishings and the crockery.

A pot of tea was ordered and poured into cups that had been so well used that the glaze had come off the rims of them, leaving the (now browning) porous porcelain exposed underneath. The cups had been worn down by the lips of a thousand grannies.

Still, there was something entertaining about it. One customer was gluten free and wanted to know if the gravy they served was suitable. One member of staff came out and wasn't sure. Another one came out and declared 'Ah know what's in stuff, me!' But didn't actually know about gravy. In the end, a catering size tub of gravy granules was brought from the kitchen.

The little old man who asked the question started to read the ingredients one by one, as the huddle of staff gathered around. 'Potato starch, should be ok with that' he began. 'Onion extract, aye, that'll be fine.' And so it went on. Thankfully before he got to the maltodextrin and emulsifier I spotted a giant yellow sign on the packaging that said 'GLUTEN FREE', and was able to put the man and his huge audience of staff at ease.

The best feature of the cafe was a big range of exotic (well, interesting) sweets. All my childhood favourites were there as well as some interesting sounding Scottish delicacies I wasn't familiar with. Soor Plooms looked good. Lucky Tatties were a complete mystery. Granny Sookems were my favourite though, and quite appropriate for the establishment. When you suck on them, they're so sour your face looks like an old granny's.
