IC 405 - Flaming Star nebula.

Rippling dust and gas lanes give the Flaming Star Nebula its name. The red and blue colors of the nebula are present in different regions and are created by different processes. The bright star AE Aurigae is so hot it is blue, emitting light so energetic it knocks electrons away from surrounding gas. When a proton recaptures an electron, red light is frequently emitted. The blue region's color is a mix of this red light and blue light emitted by AE Aurigae but reflected to us by surrounding dust. The two regions are referred to as emission nebula and reflection nebula, respectively. The Flaming Star Nebula, officially known as IC 405, lies about 1500 light years distant, spans about 5 light years, and is visible with a small telescope toward the constellation of Auriga.

An old water pipe is emitting fine spray picked by the setting sun. The pipeline (technically, a penstock) is part of the hydro power plant built around the Toketee Falls in Oregon. The same falls we saw in an earlier image: www.flickr.com/photos/olegsokol/54478564334/ The plant uses the drop of the falls to generate electricity, but I wonder how well they hid the bottom end of the penstock.

Had this sinking feeling one day last week. Years ago I configured my camera to emit a little chirp sound upon achieving focus lock. I figured my eyes were already full up with visual inputs, both from the camera but more importantly the scenes I was shooting. Engaging my sense of hearing to handle camera focus allowed me to free up my eyes for the creative aspects. Over the years it has become very instinctive to shoot this way. I am usually looking right through the viewfinder rather than at the actual display. It's also extremely handy when shooting blind (pointing the camera without using the viewfinder at all). The concept is to make the camera an extension of my own vision rather than allowing it to inhibit the creative process. So back to the other day, I noticed that the autofocus chirp had fallen silent. It wasn't that it had been disabled. It stopped because the lens was no longer locking up focus. I tried innumerable adjustments in the configuration screens thinking I had inadvertently bumped some setting. Nothing doing. The autofocus mechanism just wasn't working. I jumped onto youtube imagining this sort of thing was common and that someone would show me how to repair it. I was utterly overwhelmed by the sheer complexity inside of a modern lens. Electro-mechanical engineering at its finest, combined with advanced optics, and all packed into the narrowest confines. Just a few minutes into the first repair video showed me that I was way out of my league and DIY repairs were out of the question. I sent the lens off to a repair facility in hopes that it was something simple (and cheap). The estimate camera back yesterday and was way more than I bargained for. The lens would have to be almost completely rebuilt starting with the very pricey autofocus motor, and on and on. Simply not cost-effective to repair when a replacement lens could be had (think eBay) for less than half the repair estimate. Easy enough to purchase a replacement lens. But tough to let go of the old one. So many memories associated with old camera gear. The places I've gone, the experiences I've had; the sheer number of scenes visualized through that lens. Almost my entire flick photos stream was shot with this one lens. I probably won't part with it. I've still got nearly every camera I've ever owned. Very sentimental about these things. They are not packed away either. My old SLR film cameras are right here in my office and I look at them every day, though haven't used one in years. They mean that much to me.

Amsterdam Light Festival

Amsterdam Light Festival is an annual light art festival in Amsterdam. Artists, architects and (light) designers from all over the world bring their light artworks and installations alive during the festival every winter. The artworks are placed alongside two routes. Each route has their own theme, set of artworks and visitor experience. Water Colors, the boat rout, displays big monumental objects and offers visitors the chance to experience the art from a water perspective. Illuminade, the walking route, shows interactive and innovative installations from upcoming designers in the Plantage neighborhood.

EYE_BEACON

Artist: UNStudio - Architect bureau

Location: Amstel | Waterlooplein

This artwork is located on a bridge but is inspired by what happens in water, in the deep dark waters of the sea to be exact. Organisms live in darkness and have to create and emit their own light there. This mechanism is known as bioluminescence and is used communicate with other organism or to attracts similar species or prey.

Eye_Beacon from UNStudio consists out of two connected cubes that are arched with each other with a custom made a stretchable fabric. Through LED projections the colors of the artwork change constantly.

Eye_Beacon is also as the central information booth of the festival and the artwork that connects the Water Colors boat rout to the Illuminade walking route.

UNStudio is an architect bureau that was founded by the renowned architects Ben van Berkel and his wife Caroline Bos. Before this the company was called Berkel & Bos Architectenbureau. Did you know that UN stands for ‘United Network’? The bureau exists of a network of specialists in architecture, urban development and infrastructure. You probably know them from the Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany.

A Garrity eight-LED utility light, one of four I bought fifteen years ago. (Amazingly, the Woot.com listing, amusing write-up and all, is still live even though their offer was good for only one day in February, 2009.)

These lights came in very handy back when I was still handling 35mm film for the two film festivals I supported, for film inspection.

Perched on a cliff on the central California coast, 50 miles south of San Francisco, the 115-foot Pigeon Point Lighthouse, one of the tallest lighthouses on the West Coast, has been guiding mariners since 1872. Its five-wick lard oil lamp, and first-order Fresnel (pronounced fra-nel) lens, was first lit at sunset, November 15, 1872. Although the original Fresnel lens is no longer in use, the lighthouse is still an active U.S. Coast Guard aid to navigation using an automated LED (light-emitting diode) beacon.

Sol de Mañana (Spanish: Morning Sun) is a geothermal area in Sur Lípez Province in the Potosi Department of south-western Bolivia. It extends over 10 km2, between 4800m and 5000m in altitude.

This area is characterized by intense volcanic activity and the sulphur springs field is full of mud lakes and steam pools with boiling mud. Industrial logging was attempted at the end of the 1980s, but is uneconomic. There are still several wells, one of which emits pressurized steam, visible in the morning up to 50 meters high. The major mud lakes are located at 4850m.

The field is seismically active.

Sol de Mañana, together with El Tatio, is among the geothermal fields located at high altitude and is associated with the volcanic system of the Altiplano-Puna volcanic complex, as well as with a fault system that connects the two. Sol de Mañana is part of the geothermal system of the Laguna Colorada caldera; Cerro Guacha and Pastos Grandes have been proposed to be the heat sources as well. This geothermal field has been investigated for the potential of geothermal power generation.

The region of Sol de Mañana is volcanic, with extensive exposure of Miocene-Pleistocene materials ranging from andesite to rhyodacite, as well as extensive faulting. Moraines also occur in the area.

The filament structure of a classic incandescent projection lamp from a 16mm movie projector. This lamp was simple in design but very energy-inefficient (this 750-watt lamp barely had enough oomph to satisfactorily light a smaller classroom screen, albeit with a yellowish tinge; more recent xenon-arc technology enabled higher-end 16mm projectors to produce a much brighter and whiter light with the same 750 watts of power, enough for mid-sized auditorium screens). Like a similar picture I posted a year earlier, this 120-volt lamp was run at a low voltage, about 10-15 volts.

The bokeh is courtesy of a wadded string of LED Christmas lights, requiring a mere 4.8 watts to power the 60-bulb string.

The Julia Longwing butterfly belongs to the ‘Brush-Footed Butterfly family,’ and they have very short front legs which make the butterfly look as if they only have four legs, they are also covered in very short bristles, luckily this does not make them more visible to their prey. These butterflies feed on Lantana and Shepherds Needle etc, they are also known to settle on small caimans heads and irritate its eyes to make them water, the butterfly then drinks this to help it get salt into their systems, and it is usually the males who do this before mating. The larvae emit a chemical smell because they eat certain foods which contain traces of cyanide and because of this they are unpalatable to certain birds.

The Red-winged Blackbird is a passerine bird of the family Icteridae found in most of North and much of Central America.

They can be very aggressive while defending territory from other animals and birds, and will attack much larger birds, such as crows, ravens, birds of prey and herons if they enter. Males have been known to swoop humans who encroach upon their nesting territory during breeding season – which means everyone who happens to walk along the path anywhere nearby! They “buzz” past your ear, or over your head a couple of times, just to be sure you’ve been informed you’re trespeassing!

I once saw a Red-winged Blackbird land on the back of a Heron that he felt had trespassed - the Heron took off across the lagoon, squawking in protest, with the little blackbird hanging on, “Beeping” at the top of his lungs. Was too fascinated watching to even take a picture! On reaching the far side of the lagoon, the blackbird settled for lift-off, and each went his own way.

Their song is pretty, but when annoyed they emit a continuous high, penetrating BEEP that leaves no doubt in your mind that they’re not happy. The one in my photo was doing his version - enough to give one an earache!

Bangladesh used to be a global competitor alongside tea giants as Kenya, India and Sri Lanka. It produces about 56 million kg of tea per year of which 50 million kilograms account for domestic consumption. No wonder that tea stalls like these are found everywhere and Bangladeshis are known to be gluttonous tea drinkers.
